BMW Performance Power Kit for the BMW 335i and 135i’s N54B30 3.0L twin turbo engine

BMW Performance E90

When the F01 BMW 7-Series was launched, you may have noticed that the N54B30 engine was upped from its original 306hp and 400Nm power output to new figures – 326hp at 5,800rpm and 450Nm between 1,500 to 4,500rpm. There’s more power and torque but peak torque band is now narrower, compared to the original state of tunes 1,300 to 5,000rpm range. Not that this is a real issue as I expect at least the original 400Nm in those sections of the torque curve, just that it climbs up further to a higher peak of 450Nm later and subsequently drops down earlier.

Anyway, there now is a way for 135i and 335i drivers to upgrade their 305hp engines to the new 326hp model now, via BMW Performance’s N54 Performance Power Kit upgrade. This upgrade is available for models with the 6-speed ZF auto as well as the Coupe and Convertible 3-Series models with the new 7-speed DCT dual clutch transmission. As a result, a BMW 335i with the BMW Performance Power Kit can accelerate to 100km/h by 0.2 seconds faster. It’s not just an ECU reflash as there are quite a few bits of modification needed including a second radiator, a new intake, and an uprated cooling fan. These are all to ensure the new state of tune is as reliable as the original.

No word on price yet though, and there are of course more powerful upgrades for the N54 engines by third party tuners such as Vishnu. Vishnu’s kit ups the peak torque by as much as 135Nm over the 2,000 to 4,000rpm range, resulting in 535Nm of torque together with 340 horsepower. However most of these kits don’t specify things such as additional radiators like the BMW kit does, and perhaps are not as extensively tested so there is always that nagging worry about how much it is all going to cost you when something finally goes under the extra pressure.

Not that the N54 cannot handle it of course, but you know Murphy’s law – Anything that can go wrong, will go wrong!

F10 BMW 5-Series Sedan Artist’s Impression

F10 BMW 5-Series
Click for enlarged image

BMW’s recently unveiled BMW Concept 5-Series Gran Turismo previews an upcoming third variant of the 5-Series family, but also serves as an early glimpse of the design language that the Sedan and Estate models of the same family will share. Resident photoshop artist Theophilus Chin whipped up these artist’s impressions so we can have a preview of how the new F10 5-Series will look like. The new 5 is expected to share the new 7′s engine line-up, which means at least a 530d, a 540i and a 550i for the top end models. Markets with a penchant for smaller and more fuel efficient engines will likely receive the 523i, 525i, and 530i models, just like the current E60. The new M5 will be powered by a stronger version of the 4.4 litre twin turbo engine in the 550i.

BMW Concept 5-Series GT versus Mercedes-Benz ConceptFASCINATION

Crossovers

Is it a coincidence that both arch-rivals BMW and Mercedes-Benz chose to showcase their next generation D-segment luxury cars (5-Series and E-Class) in concept form as a coupe-estate-crossover of sorts? They also both feature plush interiors with only 4 seats, but 4 that are dedicated to offering a very high level of comfort.

The only difference is while the ConceptFASCINATION remains just that for now – a concept car, the BMW Concept 5-Series Gran Turismo will actually get a production version, one that BMW says will hit spot on at a certain target group – the aging deep-pocketed customer who finds the traditional 5-Series seating position too sporty and the BMW X6′s seating position too high and imposing.

Given that sometimes these car manufacturers actually emulate each other, especially if they see their competitor’s new niche product gaining commercial success (look at all the new 4-door coupes out there), if the 5-Series GT hits the jackpot, will we see the ConceptFASCINATION design enter production status sometime in the future?

BMW Concept 5-Series Gran Turismo previews next-generation F10 5-Series styling

BMW Concept 5-Series GT

Apparently there was a hole in the BMW line-up. It found a set of customers that it could not reach because it did not have a product that was suitable for them. These aging customers found the traditional seating position of the 5-series too sporty but the elevated seating position of the BMW X6 too imposing. Mostly the work of BMW designer Christopher Weil, this BMW Concept 5-Series Gran Turismo is likely to remain mostly the same into production. Most of the styling will also likely be implemented on the regular 5-Series Sedan and Touring to maintain a family resemblance.

Plenty will and already have been crying foul of yet another automotive word twisted beyond its traditional meaning. Think of a GT and the likes of an Aston Martin or a Maserati GranTurismo comes to mind. This looks nothing like it. BMW’s GT looks like a slammed-down lowered BMW X6. It also has a dual-operation two-piece tailgate, which you can see working in the images below. It has frameless doors, and a panoramic glass sunroof. Like the X6, it only has 4 seats in this concept version, but the production version will have the option for either a 4-seater or 5-seater version. With the rear seats folded down, maximum loading capacity is a massive 1,650 litres. The rear seats can be adjusted fore and aft individually by up to 100mm, and also has backrest recline angle adjustment. These are all via electronic adjustment.

BMW Concept 5-Series GT

The 5-Series GT has a longer wheelbase than the next generation F10 5-Series is expected to have, which is likely to be just under 3,000mm. In fact, at 3,070mm it has the same wheelbase as the F01 7-Series. The next generation long-wheelbase 5-Series Sedan (sold in China) is also expected to have this wheelbase length. So we’re probably looking at a single platform with 3 different lengths – one for the F10 5-Series, one for the 5-Series GT, the LWB 5-Series and the F01 SWB 7-Series, and the longest for the F02 7-Series and probably a Rolls-Royce.

The GT’s length of 4998mm and height of 1555mm is safetly under the longest of BMW’s – the 7-Series and the tallest – the X models. It’s a sort of in-between car, a true “Crossover”, not the Silver kind of course, though I am sure the new GT will be available in Silver, for those that don’t fancy the “Fluid Cuprite” colour in these product photos, a shade that BMW says was specially developed for this car.

BMW Concept 5-Series GT

The idea of having the smaller opening portion of the two-piece tailgate is so that small items can be loaded into the rear without creating any drafts or unnecessary temperature changes into the passenger compartment. This can be particularly felt in above average hot or cold climates. Bulky objects can be loaded by opening the traditional large tailgate.

The classic BMW corona rings (angel eyes in street speak) in the headlamps are now powered by LED, which is a first in a factory BMW. Many of the features that debuted in the 7-Series makes its way into the 5-Series GT, such as the black panel technology, and large iDrive Control Display. The new headlamps and large front grille are also similiar to the ones on the 7-Series, which I think we can assume firmly cements this as the new look for this generation of BMW’s under von Hooydonk’s watch. In person, they look better in dark colours.

Look after the jump for a full hi-res gallery as well as two videos of the new BMW Concept 5-Series Gran Turismo.

MINI JCW now available with Cabriolet body

MINI JCW Cabriolet

The MINI John Cooper Works is now available with a cabriolet body in addition to the previously revealed hatch and Clubman bodies. The MINI JCW engine’s 211 horsepower and 260Nm of torque (280Nm on temporary overboost) can take the cabriolet up to 100km/h in 6.9 seconds, which is 0.4 seconds slower than the hatch due to the extra weight from the strenghtening required to make up for the lack of a roof on the cabriolet body. The rest of the specifications are quite similiar to the other body variants.

Only the JCW MINI hatchback is currently available in Malaysia and retails for an eye-boggling RM 279,000 which could get you a nice C-segment premium sedan like the Lexus IS 250, Audi A4 with the premium package, Mercedes-Benz C200K or the JCW’s stablemate, the BMW 323i. Expect a JCW Cabriolet to push the price tag over the RM 300k mark, but somehow there will still be those who can afford it!

Look after the jump for some nice high-res photos of the JCW Cabriolet. If you like it but can’t afford it (unlike the smug-looking young bloke in the photos), at least you’ll be able to use a photo of one as a desktop wallpaper!

VIDEO: BMW M Product Development

BMW M Models

BMW is taking video quite seriously now, taking advantage of various online sharing social media sites such as YouTube to push its branding messages out there. With the impending launches of the BMW X5 M and the BMW X6 M, you can say the BMW M brand finally goes “mainstream”, since you could say it is shedding its pure performance car origins and sneaking into products that wouldn’t really fit as an M car 10 years ago.

Purists will say BMW M is becoming more and more like AMG, hence the need for videos like this to explain the rationale of BMW M and how M products are developed. This 6 minute and 47 second video has interviews with various BMW M personnel and plenty of shots of the M cars in action. You can hear the new 4.0 V8 in the M3 in action as well. A high revving V8 that goes way past 8,000rpm (unlike America’s low-revving 5,500rpm pushrod V8s), salivating!

BMW Web TV’s BMW Performance Promo Video

BMW Performance

BMW continues its push for BMW Performance products awareness with this latest video from BMW Web TV. It’s actually quite similiar to one of the previously released videos but with a different background soundtrack. Now other than brands like AC Schnitzer and Hamann, you can also kit up your BMW with products from BMW Performance. The multi-functional steering wheel looks particularly fun since it features shift lights and a multi-info display at the north position. BMW Malaysia says some BMW Performance products are already available at dealers like Auto Bavaria. Watch the video after the jump.

BMW Alpina B6 GT3 for the FIA GT3 class

BMW Alpina B6 GT3

This GT3 racer marks an old to a 20 year long “draught” in Alpina motorsports history, and while it was first announced last year, the new Alpina B6 GT3 will be making a public appearance at the Geneva Motorshow this March. Quite interesting how Eastern companies are counting their pennies and scrambling to get out of motorsports but companies like Alpina and even the recently unveiled USF1 are getting in.

B6 GT3If you’re familiar with Alpina nomenclature you’ll know that the B6 GT3 is based on the BMW 6-Series. This is a race car that complies with FIA GT3 specifications. The 4.4 litre supercharged V8 (the base is the 4.4 litre V8 from the 645Ci) from the Alpina B6 S powers this car and produces 530 PS and a massive 725Nm of torque. It is mated to a 6-speed X-Trac sequential transmission.

As you can see from the interior (photo after the jump) the car has been stripped down to the core and weighs only 1,350kg. This is a race car complete with racing accessories like quick refuelers. Wheels are thick 18 inch alloys – 12×18 at the front and 13×18 at the rear, wrapped with Michelin rubber. 0 to 100km/h takes only 3.9 seconds and the car was rated to hit a top speed of 285km/h on the Nordschleife.

Alpina’s factory team will use this car as an entry in the 2009 FIA GT3 European Championship and hopefully they will be able to relive some of its past glory, having won the Nurburgring 24 hours race a couple of times. The B6 GT3 will also be sold to private teams and collectors.

The company will also be building a new engineering facility at the cost of 10 million British pounds, which will offer consultancy services and also run in-house R&D engineering. The B6 GT3′s appearance at the Geneva Motorshow will be joined by another car aimed at a different target marketed – the new Alpina B7 based on the F01 BMW 7-Series. Let’s see what kind of magic will they extract from the 750i’s turboed 4.4 litre V8.

Chris Bangle left BMW because of Project i (Isetta) disagreements?

Chris Bangle

There is some new information, albeit from unnamed sources, on why Chris Bangle left BMW. Apparently he had disagreements with the BMW board and his successor von Hooydonk on the future direction of Project i, which is expected to spawn the spiritual successor to the BMW Isetta.

It seems that the board wanted one way and Bangle wanted another, so he decided to resign because as Head of BMW Group Design he could not take responsibility for a design strategy he did not agree with, or rather did not choose. BMW still wanted him though, and offered him other jobs such as design director of the US-bsaed DesignworksUSA, a company which von Hooydonk previously headed.

Bangle revealed later that he will be starting his own design house, but maintains he will not just be plastering the Bangle name over any industrial design product. Macbook Pros will flame surfacing or a toaster with a Bangle Butt anyone?

Toyota Camry with E60 5-Series M-Sport bodykit

BMW Camry

I was tempted to title this story “next generation BMW F10 5-Series spotted in Sunway” but I already pulled something like that before with the BMW Myvi Isetta post sometime last year. It looks like the trend of adapting your car with a bodykit to have E60 5-Series M-Sport front end styling is getting more and more popular. It is already a near-daily sight on Perodua Myvis, but this is the first time I’ve seen it on a Toyota Camry, a far more suitable vehicle as at least it’s of a near similiar size to a 5-Series. It looks like the common saying that Camry buyers want to graduate to an E-Class and Accord buyers the 5-Series is not correct all the time.
