Dacia Lodgy – first images of Geneva debutant

Dacia has released the first images of its new MPV called the Lodgy, which will make its debut at the Geneva Motor Show in March. The vehicle’s name is derived from the English word ‘lodge,’ and refers directly to the model’s ability to comfortably accommodate a family and its luggage, so goes Dacia.

The vehicle, which is set to come into the European market later this year, will be available in both five- and seven-seater forms, though the decision on commercialisation of the vehicle in right-hand drive form has yet to be finalised.

The company isn’t saying much about the upcoming vehicle, beyond the point that the 4.5 metre-long Lodgy promises a roomy interior catering to everyone on board, even third-row passengers, as well as an exceptionally large boot. More on it when the Swiss show comes, undoubtedly.

Dacia Lodgy Glace: upcoming MPV gets ice-racer preview

It’s called the Dacia Lodgy Glace, and it’s set to compete in the Trophée Andros 2011/2012 ice-racing series, which kicks off next month with the first round in Val Thorens, France.

Two Lodgy Glace entries are set to be on the grid for every race, with Alain Prost behind the wheel of one, and the other shared by his son, Nicolas Prost and Evens Stievenart. The Trophée Andros cars are custom-prepared by Tork Engineering (design, production, assembly) and Sodemo (engine), with technical expertise provided by Renault Sport Technologies.

Of note is the fact that the ice-racer MPV essentially gives an insight into the new family road car that’s set to make its debut in Geneva next March – one can assume that the road-going compact people mover will bear the same name, minus the Glace suffix, as Lodgy as that one sounds. Then again, the Duster wasn’t exactly conventional, with its name conjuring up images of an agricultural aircraft filled to the gills with DDT or a vacuum-cleaner to the uninformed.

Dacia Duster ‘No Limit’ poised to tackle Pikes Peak

Dacia is set to take on Pikes Peak – the company will enter the tough cookie international hill climb in Colorado on June 26 with a purpose-built 850 hp Duster ‘No Limit’ prototype, driven by three-time Trophée Andros champion Jean-Philippe Dayraut.

The Duster has certainly been in the thick of motorsports action in the short time its has been around, taking part in competitions like France’s Trophée Andros ice-racing series with Alain Prost (two runner-up titles) and the Rallye Aïcha des Gazelles, in which it mustered second and third placing this year.

Now, the brand has Pikes Peak in its sights, and it’s hoping the No Limit Duster will help it achieve glory. The one-off vehicle is built by Tork Engineering – which is in charge of the design, production, assembly, development of the car – and Sodemo, which is responsible for the engine part of the equation, in association with Renault Sport Technologies.

The 850 hp mill built by Sodemo is based on the Nissan VR 38 DETT 3.8 litre V6 block, as found in the GT-R, but has been tuned for the demands brought about by the high altitude event, which starts at 2,860 metres and finishes at 4,300 metres.

The engine is mated to a sequential six-speed Sadev box specially developed to cope with so much power, while at the same time ensuring quick, precise gearshifts, and the glass-fibre outer skin on the Duster also gets an advanced aerodynamics package specifically developed for the job – that’s one wicked, monstrous wing!

The Duster ‘No Limit’ meets specific regulations of the competition’s Unlimited class, which sets no upper limit on the size or power output of the engine – there’s no minimum weight, any tyres may be used and there are no restrictions concerning either the transmission system or aerodynamics.

Dacia Duster – a cheap and economical 4WD

dacia-duster

The new Dacia Duster is an econo-4WD, probably designed on the same platform as the Logan, Sandero, Logan Van, Logan MCV and Logan pick-up. It will be manufactured in Romania for the European, Turkish and Maghreb markets, and will eventually be available in worldwide markets as either a Renault or a Dacia. When we talk about worldwide, it isn’t worldwide in the sense that you’ll see it in ASEAN – countries mention to offer the Duster eventually include South America, Russia, the Middle East and Africa.

Three engines are available – two of them turbodiesels making 85hp and 105hp. The petrol engine is a 1.6 litre unit making 110hp. The 4WD system is optional, so you only buy it if you need it, otherwise you can just opt for a 2 wheel driven version, which combined with a turbodiesel engine will emit less than 140g/km of CO2. The 4X4 versions don’t do so bad either, putting out less than 150g/km of CO2.

The 4X4 system has three modes – AUTO, LOCK and 4X2. I believe the last mode is self-explanatory. AUTO means the front to rear axle torque split is varied on the fly. By default the AUTO mode only drives the front wheels and only transfers power to the rear axle when it is needed. LOCK mode forces a 50:50 split, designed for low speed low grip conditions.

The Duster is quite small, being just slightly wider than a Kia Sportage but shorter. We used to have an economical 4WD like this in our country. It was called the Perodua Kembara, but that has since been replaced by the rather expensive Perodua Nautica. Now that void is pretty much empty save for the CKD Chery Tiggo, but I’ve yet to see one on the road. Perhaps TC Euro Cars could bring this baby in as a Renault.

Look after the jump for more pix of the Duster.

Dacia reveals the Duster concept ahead of its Geneva debut!

Dacia’s first crossover concept; Duster has been revealed ahead of its Geneva debut, after releasing some teaser sketches couple of weeks ago. Measuring 4,250 mm in length, 1,640 mm in width, 1,495 mm in height as well as 2,804 mm in terms of wheelbase length, the Duster concept features a rear-hinged rear right door.

Up front, it is treated to a broad bumper with two horizontal air intake slits, head lights which wrap over the front wings, as well as a front grille featuring a rather evident Dacia logo. On the sides, it features tall doors with large wheel arches. The rear end showcases distinctive tail lights with wide trapezoidal aluminium exhaust tailpipes. The Duster’s roof is finished with a fully glazed glass.

Dacia Duster Concept Interior

On the inside, there is a two-tone chocolate and blue practical yet pleasing to the eye interior. The interior, apart from the futuristic design, also features a front passenger seat that can slide underneath the driver’s seat on rails concealed in the floor to offer an extra 2 cubic meters.

Sitting on the ground with large 5 spoke 21 inch wheels, it receives power from a 1.5 litre dCi engine that is able to deliver 105HP and at the same time, it consumes only 5.3 litres of fuel for every 100 kilometers traveled, as well as producing 139 grams of emissions per kilometer. Torque figure is rated at 240Nm at 2,000 revs while the Duster’s 0 – 100 km/h sprint performance is figured at 9.6 seconds. The dCi 105 power plant is mated to a 6 speed manual transmission.
