Honda Fit Shuttle to make Japanese market debut in March

Honda will only be officially launching its new Fit Shuttle in Japan in March, but the company has already set about featuring information about the vehicle for the domestic market via a dedicated web page.

We ran the news about the leaked brochures of the vehicle last month. As mentioned previously, two JDM versions of the compact MPV will go on sale – a Hybrid version equipped with a 1.3 litre i-VTEC + IMA system as well as a 15X model featuring a 1.5 litre i-VTEC pot.

Updated details are of transmission types – the hybrid only comes with a CVT, while the petrol version is available in both front-wheel drive (with a CVT box) and four-wheel drive form (with a five-speed auto transmission).

Takanobu Ito: Honda to revive NSX replacement plans

The Honda NSX deserves a successor, but plans for one were scrapped along with Honda’s Formula 1 involvement back in 2008. It was the power of the accountant, not dreams, that was stronger during that period, but since then the economy and car sales have rebounded, and many carmakers are even breaking records these days. So is it finally time for the NSX replacement?

According to a report by Asahi, Honda is revisiting plans to make one, and it was revealed by no other than company president Takanobu Ito at a motorsports function. The new model will be based on the HSV-010GT race car that is currently competing in Super GT. That racer was supposed to be the road going NSX before the detour, so it’s essentially a continuation of the project.

Ito said he wanted to commercialise the HSV because other automakers participate in the competition with racing versions based on cars sold on the market. “I think Honda should respect the history of the Super GT competition (as a stock-car race),” he said. Honda found a loophole in the regulations that allowed it to campaign a “production ready” model in the HSV-010.

There could be more good stuff besides the flagship, something more attainable. “There are two types of sports cars-affordable and high-performance. I hope we will be able to market both,” the boss was quoted as saying.

Cutting back on green subsidies topples the Prius

Well, it had to end at some point. Figures of Japanese car sales released late last week saw the Toyota Prius being toppled from the monthly No 1 spot as Japan’s best-selling car, a position it had held for 20 straight months.

Its replacement? Honda’s Fit compact hatch, which climbed back on to the top spot for the first time in close to two years. The Fit – or Jazz as we know it – moved 14,873 units in January, with nearly half of them the hybrid version of the car, ahead of the 13,711 managed by the Prius.

The ending of government-backed subsidies for green cars in September last year undoubtedly played a key role in pushing the Prius off the top spot. Its domestic pricing starts at US$25,000. Comparatively, the Fit was affected less by this incentive removal – it’s the cheapest hybrid in Japan at US$19,000.

Still, the Prius remains the world’s top-selling hybrid, and domestically, Toyota moved 315,669 of it in 2010, a jump of 51% from the year before.

Honda’s facelifted Euro Accord to be unveiled in Geneva

Honda will be debuting its facelifted European Accord sedan and Tourer models at the Geneva Motor Show. Both forms will feature a number of minor changes – besides revised exterior styling and detail changes inside the car, engines have been tweaked to offer better emissions and economy, and ride and handling aspects have been improved.

Exterior revisions include small but noticeable changes to the headlights – with the previously amber indicators now in a clear finish – and bumpers. Bi-xenon units, featuring Active Cornering Lights, come as standard on higher-end variants of the form.

The bi-xenon-equipped cars will also feature a High Beam Support system. A CMOS camera fitted to the windscreen in the area of the rear view mirror helps detects oncoming headlights or taillights of a vehicle in front and automatically dips the headlights onto their normal setting if they are on high-beam.

Meanwhile, the grille has been subtly remodelled, and the cooling duct and fog light recesses on all models have been re-profiled, tapered to offer a more aggressive line.

On the sedan, the rear lamps have been subtly enhanced, and a light chrome garnish gets pasted above the rear licence plate; on what’s called the Type S grade models, this garnish is finished in dark chrome. Three new colours join the lineup, these being Alabaster Silver, Graphite Lustre and Celestial Blue Pearl.

Inside, the changes are again subtle, with new seat materials and door linings leading the way. The Type S models get half leather seats in a dark grey finish and black headlining to further distinguish them. Elsewhere, the metal-look finish interior trim now comes in a darker hue, and the footwells are now illuminated blue when the headlights are on, with Type S’ being red.

Mechanically, low friction wheel bearings and reduced rolling resistance tyres have been introduced, as have underbody aerodynamic aids, including a larger front air dam, underfloor and a rear subframe cover.

Internal revisions to reduce frictional losses are the order of the day for the automatic transmission (which also features re-optimised ratios) and the 150 hp 2.2 litre i-DTEC diesel engine, which of course brings about improved fuel economy and emissions.

Improvements are also to be had with NVH levels, with the adoption of higher density foam in the under bonnet/dashboard areas and revised underfloor noise insulation among the suite of noise reduction techniques.

As for ride and handling, the dual-mode dampers have been refined to offer improvement in both high speed stability for highway driving and a significant improvement in ride quality, even over poor road surfaces.

Plans afoot to turbocharge the ailing Honda CR-Z?

According to a report, it seems Honda is in the midst of doing something bold to help resurrect its ailing CR-Z, which seems to be doing, to put it mildly, not too well in terms of domestic sales – the company, it seems, is planning to go the forced induction route with the coupe.

Autocar says that Japanese sources have intimated that the car is likely to be given a shot in the arm in the form of a 1.6 litre turbocharged pot, in two output forms, 160 hp and 200 hp. Right now, it’s only available as a hybrid, in a 1.5 litre petrol engine and 14 hp electric motor combination, which of course doesn’t sound very sexy, even if it’s doing its bit to save the planet.

Now, the vehicle you see above isn’t the claimed car, but is actually the TS-1X that made its debut at the recent Tokyo Auto Salon over the weekend. It’s a test study model based on the CR-Z, developed by Honda Access Corporation, a subsidiary specialising in genuine Honda aftermarket parts and accessories.

The front’s been reworked, with plenty of extensions elsewhere, and the car’s been slapped with a healthy dollop of matte black paint. Sure, it’s a test bed study, but mayhaps also provides some intimations of what is to be? You never know.

Supposedly, it’s speculated that the souped-up CR-Z might come about as a production-ready model by the time the Tokyo Motor Show arrives towards the end of this year. Oh well, if it saves the day, then it can’t be such a bad move. Strike one on the car’s first attempt, as well as against the go green brigade …

New Honda Civic Concept revealed at Detroit 2011!

Honda unveiled this pair of Civic Concepts at the 2011 Detroit Auto Show, which will preview the Civic Sedan and Civic Coupe for the 2012 model year in the US.

Although these cars have the word Concept tagged onto their names, I feel they’re pretty much close to production. Honda hasn’t given it all away though – no interior photos have been unveiled except for one small sketch they showed for a brief moment during the press conference.

The formula actually looks very much the same with this new Civic as compared to the outgoing 8th generation model. I wouldn’t be surprised if much of the underpinnings of this new 9th generation Civic is similar to the 8th gen.

The sedan’s side profile looks more similar to the outgoing model, but the coupe takes on a more aggressive side profile that takes after its older Accord Coupe sibling.

The Civic Sedan’s front end looks similar to the 8th gen but the rear end gets a lot of work done to it – it’s the part of the car that has changed the most and looks the best. The interior hasn’t been revealed yet but will feature the same dual-stacked displays in the current Civic.

In the US, the Civic will be available in various forms – the sporty high revving Si models, the natural gas powered GX, the regular Civics as well as a Civic Hybrid.

The Hybrid model will continue to use Honda’s IMA system but will feature lithium ion batteries along with the latest revision of the system. Eco Assist will not only be limited to the Hybrid but will also be a feature on the regular gasoline-only model. Eco Assist is basically an on-board fuel efficiency display and feedback system designed to educate the driver on how to drive more efficiently.

It looks like Honda hasn’t messed around with the formula of the current Civic much but I hope the updates to the looks come together with improvements under the skin as well – you can never go wrong with more reliability, fuel efficiency, features and safety.

Unfortunately we can’t really tell from these concepts as they only show the exterior aesthetics of the new car.

Look after the jump for a full hi-res gallery of the new Civic.

New Honda Civic to be unveiled tonight at Detroit!

It’s going to be a long night for us – only a few more hours to go until the next generation Honda Civic is unveiled at the 2011 Detroit Auto Show.

The model that will be unveiled at Detroit will be based on the sketch you see above, which was first teased in December last year.

8th Generation Civic – Malaysia

What we’re not sure of right now is whether the Detroit car will be the car that we’ll get here in Malaysia. After all, the US Civic and the Asian Civic have looked a little difference for the past few generations now, even though they share the same platform and a very similiar interior design. In addition, the US Civic has a Coupe body.

The Euro Civic is a completely different animal altogether – a smaller vehicle sitting on a different platform. Things are different with the larger Accord though – the US and the Asian Accord are the same car, while the Japanese Accord and Euro Accord are the same.

8th Generation Civic – US look

Automakers these days often have to pick between offering a ‘global model’ in the interest of better economies of scale, or offering customised solutions tailored to the tastes of each region. Some manufacturers who have had two different models serving different regions such as the Cobalt and the Optra for GM and the Euro Focus and USDM Focus for Ford have switched to a single model – Cruze and Global Focus, while other cars like the Passat and the Mazda 6 have now ‘split’ into one car for the world and larger version for North America – the US market Mazda 6 has a longer wheelbase.

With the 9th generation Honda Civic, will there be a single Honda Civic for the world or multiple Civics like what is currently offered? If there will be multiple Civics, will the ‘distribution’ of each variant be the same? I’ve heard news in the past that the JDM Civic will switch from the current large model into a smaller car to be more competitive in its homeland, like how Toyota has the smaller Corolla in Japan compared to our larger Corolla Altis. I hope a larger Civic continues to be offered – who can argue with more metal for your money in a country that doesn’t tax you based on your dimensions?

Honda Fit Shuttle leaked – Jazz wagon is the new Airwave!

Some of you might know the Honda Airwave, a wagon version of the Jazz and City brought in by grey importers. That compact station wagon (as it was called by Honda) was launched to the Japanese market in 2005 and was based on the previous generation Jazz, so with the B-segment hatchback being replaced, a “new Airwave” was expected.

Well, here it is, with a new name. These leaked brochures show an elongated version of the Jazz, which is called Fit in its home market. The Fit Shuttle won’t be mistaken as a spin off from any other model, as it retains much of the Jazz’s distinctive looks, both front and rear. The forward leaning “fin” (the C-pillars) from the Airwave have become full length items, and is the most glaring design cue on the flanks.

The brochures show two variants – a 1.5 i-VTEC powered Type 15X and a Hybrid model. The latter’s drivetrain combines a 1.3L engine with Honda’s battery powered IMA system, which should be identical to that in the Jazz Hybrid and Insight. Those flat wheelcaps look as if they’re chosen for aerodynamics, not aesthetics.

The dashboard is similar to the Jazz. No mention on whether the boot space with all five seats in place beats the Airwave’s 473 litres. Images after the jump.

GALLERY: New Li Nian Everus S1 is the old Honda City

Guanggi Honda, Honda’s Chinese JV company, launched own brand Li Nian’s first car at Auto Guangzhou 2010. Li Nian is meant to be a China-only brand and its “English name” is Everus. This debut model is called S1 and it’s based on the previous generation Honda City.

We previously posted up official images of the S1′s front and side, without the rear. With this live gallery from Guangzhou we can confirm that there are no big changes to the City’s original rear design. The light cluster shape and design plus a chrome strip are among the differences. The fresh front end looks a bit like the current “Optimus Prime” City to my eyes, especially from the side.

The S1 will go on sale in the first quarter of 2011 with 1.3 and 1.5-litre engines. Gallery after the jump.

And the fastest Honda of them all? Why, it’s a plane!

hondajet

News of a very different nature, yes, but undoubtedly something Honda aficionados looking for bragging rights can sink their teeth into – this one is much faster than an NSX, and it can even take to the skies; best of all, you can look at that Toyota owner and say quite politely that the TAA isn’t remotely in the same league.

Honda Aircraft’s HondaJet advanced light business jet has succesfully completed its maiden flight, which lasted 51 minutes, a milestone for the company as it moves towards getting the plane ready for its market debut in late 2012.

hondajet2

Well over 100 orders have been taken for the US$4.5 mil jet, which features a unique over-the-wing engine-mount configuration that dramatically improves aircraft performance and fuel efficiency by significantly reducing aerodynamic drag in flight. The HondaJet is powered by two GE Honda HF120 turbofan jet engines, and performance specs include a top speed of 420 knots (778 kph) and a maximum altitude of 43,000 ft in flight testing.

The production HondaJet flight deck will feature a Honda-customised Garmin G3000 next-generation all-glass avionics system incorporating a class-leading layout with three 14-inch landscape-format displays and dual touch-screen controllers, as well as a HondaJet Avionics Suite that provides state-of-the-art integrated avionics functionality featuring split screen MFD capability, satellite weather, graphical synoptics, digital audio and optional Synthetic Vision.

Definitely a neater trick than any car, except of course it’ll cost you very much more to get, and run.
