Reports: Volkswagen planning a low-cost car brand

Well, it seems not only Nissan has the idea of drawing a line in the sand with regards to market demarcation through separate branding, with the re-emergence of Datsun, replete with reinvented logo, into its fold – Volkswagen is said to be planning a low-cost car brand for emerging markets as well.

According to reports, Wolfsburg is looking at opening up the cards in the lower end of the price scale, aimed primarily at the Chinese and Indian markets, but surely to also include many upcoming economies once it starts chugging along, one senses.

VW’s head of research and development, Ulrich Hackenburg, said that in India, the company already builds the Vento and a local Polo variant, which goes for around 7,000 euros, but plans are afoot to come up with a more attractively priced offering in China, which will be the size of a Seat Toledo. No decision had yet been made whether such a car is to be manufactured with a Chinese partner.

The car will sell for about 5,000 euros, he said. He added that the trick would be to find the right amount of content to omit from the car to price it affordably. “Here you really have to closely look at what can be done away with, but those cars would not be sold under the name Volkswagen, more as their own brand,” he told Auto Motor und Sport.

Before Lotus, Williams and of course, McLaren, there was Toleman. Continuing on our trip down nostalgia lane this week, some news about the car that Ayrton Senna began his F1 race career in.

The Toleman TG184-2 Formula One car driven by Senna in his debut F1 season is going up for auction in the UK. This particular car is perhaps best known for Senna’s remarkable second place drive in the rain-soaked 1984 Monaco GP, arguably the race which first demonstrated his extraordinary talents to the world.

Jaguar Land Rover and Chery seal US$2.8 bil joint venture deal to build and sell vehicles in China

Jaguar Land Rover is looking to make serious inroads in China, with the intent signaled by the finalisation of a joint venture agreement with Chery Automobile to manufacture and sell vehicles in the country.

The deal, worth 17.5 billion yuan (US$2.8 billion), is a boost for JLR’s efforts in expanding its market and reach in the No 1 auto market in the world, but it will still need regulatory approval, reports indicate. The two companies will now follow the official process to form a JV company in the country.

The joint venture concern, which will have its operations base located in eastern China, is set to build both Jaguar and Land Rover vehicles as well as planned JV-branded vehicles and engines, and will also sell the vehicles. The coperation will also see the setting up of an R&D facility.

Volkswagen XL1 – two-seater to go into production in 2013

Volkswagen’s XL1 Super Efficient Vehicle (SEV), which premiered in concept form at the Qatar Motor Show in January last year, is set to go into small-series production in 2013, presumably as a primary field test.

VW’s CEO Martin Winterkorn said that production will start in two years time in Germany, according to a report by Automotive News Europe. The report added that sources said the plug-in hybrid will be built either in Dresden or Wolfsburg.

The lightweight 795 kg vehicle is an evolution of the 1-Litre car from 2002 and the L1 concept of 2009, and is capable of offering a staggering 110.9 km per litre in fuel consumption on a combined cycle.

It’s powered by an 800 cc TDI two-cylinder common-rail diesel engine offering 47 hp and an electric motor producing 27 hp, and the hybrid powertrain works with a seven-speed DSG gearbox with an automatic clutch mounted between each unit.

The electric motor can either work independently of the TDI engine or in tandem when accelerating – in pure electric mode the XL1 can travel up to 35 km before the diesel engine cuts in. Performance figures for the 3.97 metre-long two-seater include a 0-100 km/h time of 11.9 seconds and an electronically-limited 160 km/h top speed.

New Datsun logo revealed, no more red rising sun

This is the new logo of the reborn Datsun brand. If you haven’t already heard, go on and read our earlier post, which details the relaunch of the brand by Nissan. Out goes the red rising sun in the background, and that’s logical, since today’s Datsun is not going to be sold in Japan, or developed markets, but high-growth emerging ones.

“Datsun will provide sustainable motoring experience to optimistic up-and-coming customers in high-growth markets. Datsun represents 80 years of accumulated Japanese carmaking expertise and is a important part of Nissan’s DNA. Datsun vehicles will start sales in India, Indonesia, and Russia from 2014,” Nissan boss Carlos Ghosn said.

Indonesia is a major part of Datsun’s plans. “Nissan is bringing new jobs and new vehicles to Indonesia. We are going to expand our production capability and offer a new and exciting product line here,” Ghosn added in a statement.

Chevrolet Trailblazer makes world debut in Thailand

The Chevrolet Trailblazer made its world debut today at a special launch, breaking cover ahead of next week’s 33rd Bangkok International Motor Show in Thailand.

First previewed in concept form at last year’s Dubai International Motor Show, the D-segment Trailblazer – which is designed by the GM South America Design Center in São Caetano do Sul, Brazil – will go on sale around the world, beginning with Thailand in June.

The SUV version of the Colorado pickup – which is set to be launched in Malaysia soon – will be available in two- and four-wheel-drive configurations, and will feature the Duramax four-cylinder turbodiesel mills as found on the Colorado – the 2.8 litre VGT will offer 180 hp and 470 Nm (440 Nm with the manual transmission), while the 2.5 litre is good for 150 hp and 350 Nm.

Drivetrain choices are a five-speed manual transmission and a six-speed automatic featuring electronic shift-control with clutch-to-clutch capability and an electro-hydraulic control module.

Plenty in the way of active and passive safety features, with front airbags, electronic stability control, ABS, brake assist, traction control, EBD, hill start assist, hill descent control, engine drag control and dynamic rear brake proportioning in the list.

The interior of the seven-seater features light-coloured leather seats, which offer three-row tumble and/or fold-flat seat versatility. As for space, the company says the Trailblazer best-in-class spaciousness in the third row; it’s an authentic third row where people can sit comfortably over long trips, so it goes.

The second row 60/40 split seats offer fold-flat capability, as do the third row 50/50 split seats, making for a cavernous flat floor storage space if the need arises to haul cargo.

The Trailblazer will be available in two specification levels, a mid-level LT and a range-topping LTZ, with seven exterior colour choices, these being Summit White, Black Sapphire, Sizzle Red, Auburn Brown, Blue Mountain, Royal Gray and Switchblade Silver.

BMW Classic to remanufacture Original BMW 328 gearbox

We read about the return of an old name earlier. Now, something new for the old. In this case, it’s a brand new gearbox for the Original BMW 328, which celebrated its 75th anniversary last year.

BMW Classic has commissioned the remanufacture of gear-wheel kits for the original Hurth gearbox installed in the car in the 1930s, which featured first and second gears that were not synchronised, and third and fourth gears that were.

Over the years, the existing gearboxes have pretty much been modified and optimised from the original configuration, and the biggest challenge was establishing the actual status of the original.

Together with Classic’s experts and external specialists, gearbox specialists ZF Friedrichshafen has banded together to work on getting things closer to the original status from the 1930s, and it’s all enough to give the project a status akin to prototype construction for modern gearboxes.

The first prototypes have already been installed in BMW Classic’s works vehicles for endurance testing, and deliveries to customers should begin at the end of this year or early 2013.

The reinvention is borne out of necessity – of the 464 examples of the BMW 328 ever built, around 200 are stiill in existence, some 120 of which are in Germany. You can imagine that there’ll be plenty of owners lining up for the new kits.

Toyota boosting Prius c production to meet strong demand

The Prius c has been a hit for Toyota, and the company can’t make enough of them. Toyota is shipping just 6,000 units of the compact hybrid to North America per month, which is not enough to satisfy demand, but that number is set to grow by mid 2012. The Prius c went on sale domestically in December last year, and hits US showrooms this month.

Supply constraints and soaring domestic market demand is keeping supplies low for the rest of the world. In Japan, the small car known as Aqua has racked up a big backlog of 120,000 orders. The rising yen (against USD) is also affecting profit margins for US sales, so it makes sense for Toyota to focus on fulfilling local orders.

The Prius c is exclusively made in Iwate, northern Japan, at a plant run by Toyota affiliate Kanto Auto Works Ltd. Kanto president Tetsuo Hattori revealed that the company is currently working on rolling out more units of the small Prius.

Besides improving efficiency that will increase overall capacity, the plant will gradually shift production of the JDM Toyota Ractis to a sister plant in Higashifuji from May. The freed up capacity will be used to make more Aquas.

Kanto’s Iwate plant makes about 30,000 units of the Prius c units a month. The annual rate of 360k units is already up from the originally planned 240k units, and it accounts for 80% of total plant output. Besides the Prius c and Ractis, the facility also produces the Toyota ist (called Urban Cruiser in UK and Scion xD in USA), Belta (we’re very familiar with this, the Vios) and the Blade hatchback.

The Prius c was launched in Malaysia last month, click here to read our launch report.

BREAKING: Datsun brand comeback is confirmed

It’s confirmed. Datsun is back. That’s right. The brand that Nissan discontinued in order to unify all of its products under one roof will be back on the road in the very near future. The news isn’t a surprising one. Nissan was earlier reported to be ready to revive the brand.

Reports suggest that Datsun will be an affordable car brand, with vehicles bearing a small displacement engine and fitted with high local content. Carlos Ghosn was quoted as saying that the Datsuns would be green cars, no doubt supporting the Indonesian government’s plans to introduce a Green Car plan in the near future.

So, in the grand scheme of things, Datsun will conveniently take its place under its parent, Nissan, and placed well away from the top-shelf Infiniti marque. The target market for each brand cannot be more obvious.

The rejuvenated sub-brand has a whole new market to tackle, of course. Ghosn, while talking to the media, said that Datsun ‘will provide sustainable motoring experience to optimistic up-and-coming customers in high-growth markets’. And it will all start in Indonesia.

Nostalgia – the B110 from 1970-73. Click to enlarge.

Which is why Nissan will be upping its production base and sales presence in the country. The total production capacity in Nissan’s Cikampek site will increase to 250,000 annually by 2014, with the workforce expanding to 3,300. This makes this factory one of the largest in the ASEAN region for Nissan. There are also plans to add 150 more dealerships by 2015.

Reports states that Datsun vehicles will start sales in India, Indonesia and Russia from 2014, but Indonesia remains the priority market for the brand, Ghosn said. “If there is any room for more capacity it will be located for the domestic (market) rather than for exports,” he told reporters. The reports also indicate an initial target figure of 60,000 units annually, with a growth rate of 7% each year.

To put more meat on the bones: there were 800,000 vehicles sold in Indonesia in 2011 alone. That makes the island-nation ASEAN’s largest car market. The total is estimated to increase almost double by 2017. And it looks like Nissan would love to be in the thick of things.

And this is the B210 from 1973-77.

Demarcation is always a good thing, especially if you’re looking to define your products and their intended target market, without affecting clout and the perception of your consumer base. In this regard, the Renault-Nissan alliance has set up its stall with clear intent and purpose as far as separation goes – Renault has Dacia, and Nissan, Datsun and Infiniti.

Going the Dacia route wouldn’t work, at least not in the region. The brand is an unknown entity in these parts, and besides, it has Renault spelt all over it. Datsun has far better ‘heritage’ (well, it does!) and association as a name, and the reintroduction route is a simpler option to plonk for. In any case, offering a clear sub-brand should work far better than going say, the IMV route chosen by Toyota.

Still, there’s the odd, inevitable question. I wonder how much money is being spent to reintroduce the name. To the average teen on the street, the name Datsun could very well mean a new line of shoes. And it is this same group of teenagers that will possibly own a Datsun as their first car; Datsun is a brand that’s unheard of where the current generation is concerned. It could probably be a new brand of smartphones, for all they know.

Now, who can forget the B310 – known as the 120Y here – from 1977-81?

It might not matter, really, because if it’s all priced right and meets the requirements of the intended market, it’ll be lapped up.

Malaysia isn’t on the Datsun radar, at least not at the moment, and in all likelihood the brand might not come. The cheapest Nissan in the market is now the Sentra 1.6 manual, at around RM85,000. Price the car any lower, which the Datsun must absolutely be, and it will invade into national car territory. Price it higher, which is the likely scenario, and it simply doesn’t make sense.

In spite of these speculative hurdles, I do hope Datsun makes it back here and I do hope it re-establishes itself, more for nostalgic reasons than any other. For the older generation of drivers, it was with Datsun cars that they first cut their motoring teeth. Me, I cut mine in a B11 130Y, the initial batch of which bore Datsun badging.
