GM finally decides to make right hand drive Camaro!

Will this be the first step for a genuine American muscle car to make its way to our South East Asian continent, no matter through official channels or grey importers? This is in relation to the news that Chevrolet will finally be offering a right hand drive variant of their Camaro muscle car in the UK next year.

A Camaro (complete with Transformers Bumblebee decoration) was previewed to UK folk at the Goodwood Festival of Speed and the Camaro model in question uses the 6.2-litre V8, which produces 426hp and 569Nm of torque.

Even if Naza’s Chevrolet distributorship doesn’t bring this right hand drive Camaro in, but there will always be supply for where there is demand, and amusingly enough one of the first likely to bring a right hand drive Camaro in would likely be Naza’s very own Naza World. And I’m pretty sure there are enough deep pocketed people who were smitten by the Camaro’s portrayal of Bumblebee in the new Transformers franchise.

Here’s to 6.2 litre yellow monsters with the steering wheel on the correct side of the car on our roads soon! Previously, the only way to get a right hand drive Camaro was to buy a converted car from companies such as Performax International.

M5 killer? F10 Alpina B5 Biturbo pictures unveiled!

The Alpina B5 Biturbo was recently unveiled at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. Based on the new F10 5-Series, the B5 Biturbo will offer blend of luxurious performance, elegant styling, sporty handling and exclusivity.

Under the hood is a 4.4 litre twin-turbo V8 originally found in the 550i. In Alpina tune, it produces 500hp and 699Nm of torque which is channeled through a modified version of the ZF’s eight-speed automatic gearbox. You can expect a 0 to 100 figure in just 4.7 seconds going on to reach an unrestricted top speed of 307km/h.

Alpina’s power figures are high but not as high as BMW M’s version of the 4.4 litre twin turbo with their very own special exhaust manifold. The M version of the engine makes more power as seen in the BMW X6 M – 555 horses and 680Nm of torque.

Internally called the N63, the exterior will feature elements synonymous with Alpina, such as the oval four tailpipes, larger air vents incorporated into the bumper, along with classic Alpina multi spoke wheels.

At the moment, this is the fastest F10 5-Series money can buy as the M5 (which will like be powered by the X6 M’s engine) is schedule for release in 2011. The M5 is said to be set to produce anything from 555hp (like to X6 M) to 600hp. Unfortunately no official pricing has been announced for the B5, but it is expected to be in the region of £65,000 in the UK.

More pictures are available after the jump.

Dagger GT with 2,000hp chasing supercar top spot!

When VW-owned Bugatti introduced the Veyron, they worked hard on combining what its prospective customers would want from a high end bullet on wheels, which was ultimate luxury garnered with extreme power.

TranStar Racing is trying to do the same with the release of the Dagger GT, which produces a record breaking 2,000hp from a 572 multifuel (petrol/methanol/hydrogen/ethanol) twin turbo racing unit. Produced by Nelson Racing Engines, the monster car puts out an equally spine tingling 2,710Nm of torque which is paired with a TranStar/Mendeola 6-speed transmission.

If figures are to be believed, the car can explode from 0 to 96km/h in just 1.5 seconds whereas that infamous quarter mile (400 meter) drag is accomplished in just 6.7 seconds. Believe it or not, this goes on to reach a claimed top speed of 483km/h, which is higher than the 425km/h official record just set by the Veyron.

The car uses high-strength 4130 Chromoly Steel for the chassis while the outer body is covered in carbon fibre which brings weight down in the supercar. Handmade to prospective customer’s specification, they will have the option of a hard-core racing model, a street-legal comfortable-riding sport model, or a soft-riding, luxurious GT-X model.

The cost of this luxury sets you back a measly US$450,000 which is a bargain when you consider that the company is trying to make a car that looks like it’s worth a million dollars. Contributing to that unique supercar persona is the fact that only 5 units will be constructed for 2011, while a further 10 is being planned for 2012.

It’s a little hard to say what kind of car this is just from specs and pictures. The Veyron may have a huge amount of horsepower but it’s crazily heavy as well thanks to all the insulation to separate the driver from all the rawness. I doubt the Dagger follows the same formula.

Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Super Sport pumped up to 1,200hp to break world speed record – 425km/h!

Bugatti has decided to give something extra to prospective customers of the new Veyron 16.4 Super Sport, the ‘world’s fastest road going car’ title (certified by the Guinness Book of World Records).

As if a four figure horsepower figure wasn’t enough, the company have now pushed power delivery from 1,001hp to 1,200hp, with an amazing 1,500Nm of torque. This is able to produce the record breaking top speed of 425km/h which was done on the proving grounds of the Volkswagen Group at Ehra-Lessien by Bugatti’s official test driver Pierre Henri Raphanel.

Power output of such intensity has been achieved with the help of four enlarged turbochargers and bigger intercoolers on the 16 cylinder engine. The chassis has also been redesigned to handle the extreme speed, which includes slightly raised main-spring travel, stronger stabilisers, and new shock absorbers with a complex architecture originally developed for racing cars. Combined with the intelligent all-wheel drive system, the Super Sport is able to handle the acceleration that 1,500Nm produces when exiting corners.

Helping achieve a planted feel, the aerodynamics of the car has been fine-tuned along with the use of new carbon fibre monocoque structure which stiffens the body of the car. The exterior will also be covered in carbon fibre composites and will be available in 100 per-cent clear- lacquered exposed carbon on request.

Complimenting that extreme look would be exterior revisions that make the Super Sport look, well, sporty! This includes NACA ducts integrated into the roof, front air intakes that have been expanded and reshaped, and revised double diffuser and a centrally arranged exhaust system.

The first five cars will sport a special black exposed carbon and orange finish and will be called the “World Record Edition” in commemoration of their speed record. It will make its official public debut at the Pebble Beach Concours weekend in California this August.

Range Rover Evoque – the LRX makes it to production!

Range Rover Evoque
Click for enlarged image

You’ll occasionally see things like this on the drawing board, never making it into full production guise. Land Rover have proved all of us wrong with the release of the Range Rover Evoque. Described as a ‘coupe’ (haha that’s taking it a bit too far), the design of the SUV has been inspired by the Land Rover LRX concept, which was very good looking.

The Evoque boasts some interesting eco-credentials. This can be seen by the availability of the two-wheel and four-wheel drive models for the discerning driver. The two-wheel drive variant produces an average CO2 figure of just 130g/km. Apart from being the greenest Range Rover ever, it is said to be more fuel efficient than any in the current range. Unfortunately no information of the new SUV’s powertrain or fuel consumption figures are available, so we’ll have to trust the company’s claims for now.

Phil Popham, managing director of Land Rover said, “the all-new Range Rover Evoque is an important step for the future continued success and growth of the brand. Customers can be confident that the new car will be premium, luxurious and just as special as the other Range Rover models. Its sporting looks and unique qualities will open the brand to a new group of customers who may not have considered a Range Rover product before.”

The Tata-owned company also said that the new variant will be sold in around 160 countries while production will be based in Halewood, UK. The world debut of the new variant will be at the Paris Motor Show in September, while European sales will start around mid 2011.

Audi R8 Spyder with the 430hp V8 4.2 FSI engine

Audi has released the V8 version of the R8 Spyder which now completes the model line-up, for now. The drop top R8 was previously only available with the V10 that tops the V8 by about 130 horses. Powering the car will be a tuned up version of the standard 4.2 FSI engine which now produces 430hp and 430Nm of torque, which was previously 414hp in the coupe. This tuned up V8 is mated to the standard six-speed manual gearbox or the optional R-Tronic semi-automatic gearbox.

The car will also feature Audi’s standard Quattro all-wheel drive as per the coupe, along with the option of the Audi magnetic ride adaptive damping. This uses a magnetic field in the hydraulic shocks that adjusts according to the road surface and driving style within milliseconds. A much needed option in pothole ridden roads such as ones seen in Malaysia.

Of course after all said and done, the highlight of this car is the open top fabric roof, the main reason why one would buy a Spyder of the regular coupe. Weighing in at only 42kgs, the setup takes only 19 seconds to fold and unfold out of the storage compartment over the engine, while structural rigidity problems are solved by specially reinforcing the sills, the centre tunnel, the rear bulkhead, the floor and both the A and B pillars.

All of this takes up extra weight, which explains why Audi tuned up the V8 for Spyder. The reinforcements have added 216 kilograms to the total weight of the car which now stands at 1,735 kilograms (including the driver) compared to the coupe which comes in at 1,560kg. Making its appearance in the European market in the third quarter of 2010, the V8 Spyder will come in at a base price of €121,000. Audi has yet to release pictures of the V8 variant but have included these power figures and schematic drawings of the R8, which can be viewed after the jump.

Ford UK to sell cars online – will it work in Malaysia?

Ford UK has announced that they will be selling vehicles directly over the internet from the 29th of June this year. This comes after research conducted by Ford stated that 40 percent of buyers in the UK aren’t even bothered about a test drive.

After purchase online, customers can drop by one of the 12 regional delivery centres to pick up their ordered goods. Before you ask, apparently haggling is still possible, even if the internet route is chosen as it is also supported by a call centre for the not-so tech savvy.

This will have a massively detrimental effect on the 550 dealership networks that would see sales drop by a certain amount. We should keep in mind that 40 percent is a hypothetical (internet-poll-like) figure and there are still a majority of customers who would rather purchase the car at a dealer enveloping the whole feel of the car with their senses along with that all important test-drive.

Like many things, this would be a hard sell in countries like Malaysia where purchases are governed by our hearts and not our minds. We could do all the research we want before we drop down to our local Ford dealer, but when you’re spending 100 times your monthly salary you want the whole car buying experience to be fulfilled.

Again this might be a good way to shift your car, in a country where there isn’t a big gap in salaries and car prices, but not here. Especially in a country where a car has traditionally been part of the family, very much like an extremely expensive pet. The figure of people wanting to buy a car online would be drastically lower in the ASEAN region, but there would still be a market centred around cheap everyday runabouts.

Most car companies in Malaysia barely pay any attention to online marketing and advertising, often choosing a print ad in a magazine with say a 3,000 print run over a hundred thousand impressions of online advertising, both often going at the same price. There only a few which are online savvy, such as Proton Edar for example – they even used to allow you to book your car online and there was even a feature called Proton Live where you could even ask questions and ‘haggle’ with an online sales advisor.

In the end Audi UK, who say they will never adopt this route, puts it nicely: “We would not do it because people like to sit in the cars and touch them. And the dealer is there to help with the decision-making process.”

Tesla Roadster 2.5 – roadster with a revised face

The Lotus Elise-based Tesla roadster has undergone a facelift and is now called the Roadster 2.5. The revisions are minor and are centered on the front and back end of the car.

In front, the roadster gets a new reshaped grille with diffusing vents while the back gets a rear diffuser reflecting the future of Tesla’s design. This sits on forged wheels which are available in silver and black.

Inside, the seats feature greater comfort with larger supportive bolsters and a new lumbar support system while an optional 7-inch touchscreen display with a back-up camera. Not that the car was noisy to start off with, but they have added a new front fender liner material which makes the cabin even quieter.

The Roadster 2.5 is set to be unveiled at the new Copenhagen and Newport Beach, CA dealerships. You can view a picture gallery of the roadster after the jump.

F10 BMW 5-Series M-Sport bodykit finally unveiled!

BMW have finally unveiled the M-Sports equipped version of the F10 5-Series, and I must say it seriously looks the business! The long bonnet matches the aggressive bumper much better compared to the regular version.

Both the front and rear bumpers have changed, and the car has an M Sports suspension as well as 18 inch M light alloys which remind me of a cross between M6 wheels and Z4 M wheels. There are two optional additions – an M rear bootlid spoiler and larger 19 inch M light alloys.

On the interior, the car gets specially Sports seats, an M leather-clad steering wheel, an M gear lever knob, an anthracite roof lining and M aluminium hexagon interior trim instead of the usual wooden stuff

The M-Sports package has been launched together with a new engine variant – the 299 horsepower BMW 535d which uses a 3.0 litre diesel engine with two turbochargers. The peak 299 horsepower is achieved at 4,400rpm while peak torque is a massive 600Nm from just 1,750rpm. 0 to 100km/h takes just 5.7 seconds.

Look after the jump for a high resolution gallery of the above images. Only four have been released for now but we will update you as soon as we can get more images.

Sportec SPR1R – 846 hp, 1,295 kg, 380 km/h top speed!

It may look quite innocent, but this creation of Swiss tuner Sportec is a performance monster. This is the SPR1R, a faster, lighter, improved version of last year’s SPR1. Based on the Porsche 911 Turbo, Sportec has managed to squeeze out 846 hp and 870 Nm from the bi-turbo 3.6-litre flat-six engine. Weighing just 1,295 kg, the SPR1R does the benchmark century sprint in 3.0 seconds flat, on to an outrageous top speed of over 380 km/h.

Managing that excess of power will be the addition of titanium connecting rods, a flat carbon fibre under floor, active suspension and F1 style ceramic brake discs, composite (carbon/kevlar) body panels, forged alloy wheels, an integrated safety cage and four wheel drive.

Also on offer is a driver adjustable traction control system which is managed by a touch screen display unit that also logs data, lap times and allows customers to monitor engine data.

Want something more subtle? How about an Audi RS6?
