Jaguar XJ Supersport becomes Nurburgring speed taxi

Jaguar has decided to go the Nürburgring taxi ride route, and has picked a long wheelbase XJ Supersport for the job as the company’s particular Nordschleife cab.

Finished in non-standard matt grey paint and dressed up with an exterior Sport Pack, the dedicated Ring cat is also specified with the Speed Pack, which raises its electronically-limited top speed from 250 km/h to 280 km/h. Otherwise, the car is mechanically standard, with the 5.0 litre supercharged V8 offering 510 PS for output.

Inside, a few of the XJ’s usual creature comforts have been replaced in order to keep its occupants securely in place during the rapid shuttle service, but the car seats four comfortably.

Gone are the standard leather-trimmed heated and cooled seats, and in their place are four race seats, each equipped with four-point harnesses. A full bespoke roll cage completes the interior changes.

Jag XJ Ultimate – special Coventry cat presented in China

For the select few who consider their XJs a little too, ahem, common, Jaguar provides a solution in the form of the XJ Ultimate, which pounces on to the global stage here in Beijing.

The saloon is a product of Jaguar’s new ETO (Engineered To Order) division, a department which also created the Victoria Beckham Evoque.

Buyers can choose from a new 3.0 litre supercharged petrol V6 producing either 335 or 375 hp, the familiar 5.0 litre petrol V8 or the 3.0 litre turbocharged diesel V6. An eight-speed auto is standard fare.

Meanwhile, 20-spoke alloys, chromed air intakes and stainless steel oval tailpipes ensure the lucky owners won’t lose their XJ in an XJ-only car park.

The audiophiles within that select few will rejoice, for British sound specialists Meridian have designed a 20-speaker, twin-subwoofer, 825-watt surround sound system specifically for this car.

Bedecked also with interior pleasantries such as a champagne cooler (with Goran Hongell champagne glasses, no less), business table that powers into position, heated steering wheel and iPads for the electrically-adjustable rear seats (which massage you too), the XJ Ultimate certainly lives up to its name.

Jaguar F-type confirmed, full details later in the year

Jaguar has confirmed that the car company will put into production an all-new sports car. The name: the F-type. Could this be the successor to the iconic E-type?

It will be based on the C-X16 concept that was shown in Frankfurt last year. The concept car was well received, which encouraged Jaguar to accelerate the development of the F-type. The F-type will be constructed in Jaguar’s Castle Bromwich plant and prototypes are being tested there as well.

It is said that the F-type will use an all-aluminium construction and will be launched as a strict two-seater convertible that will impart driving pleasure. A new powerplant family as well as a range of petrol engines will be powering the F-type. I wonder what the new family of powerplant is, electric or hybrid?

The F-type will have huge shoes to fill considering the cars that came before it: the C-type, D-type and E-type. Jaguar will release full details about the car later in the year and will go on sale in mid 2013.

Jaguar Land Rover and Chery seal US$2.8 bil joint venture deal to build and sell vehicles in China

Jaguar Land Rover is looking to make serious inroads in China, with the intent signaled by the finalisation of a joint venture agreement with Chery Automobile to manufacture and sell vehicles in the country.

The deal, worth 17.5 billion yuan (US$2.8 billion), is a boost for JLR’s efforts in expanding its market and reach in the No 1 auto market in the world, but it will still need regulatory approval, reports indicate. The two companies will now follow the official process to form a JV company in the country.

The joint venture concern, which will have its operations base located in eastern China, is set to build both Jaguar and Land Rover vehicles as well as planned JV-branded vehicles and engines, and will also sell the vehicles. The coperation will also see the setting up of an R&D facility.

More wagon – Jaguar XF Sportbrake fully revealed!

More wagons coming your way, but this one is from a different league. We posted up leaked scans of the Jaguar XF Sportbrake earlier this week, the wagon version of the XF that will be debuting at Geneva. But no need to wait till the cloth drops in Switzerland for full info, because Jaguar has now revealed all.

The XF Sportbrake is entirely new from the B-pillar backwards, and it’s a sleek second half. As previously spotted, the tinted rear screen appears to be linked with the chrome side glass border, thanks to rear pillars covered with gloss black finishers. Apparently inspired by luxury yachts, Jag used the same trick for its XJ limo. The sedan’s 2,909 mm wheelbase is unchanged.

There are two optional exterior design packages. The Aero Pack (standard on the ‘S’ model) adds a deeper front bumper, side sills and rear valance plus a rear spoiler enhancement. The Black Pack replaces the exterior bright finishes with gloss black and pairs them with similarly finished alloys.

It looks good, but space and practicality isn’t forgotten. The extended roofline affords rear-seat passengers an additional 48 mm of headroom and the rear seats have 60:40 split fold function and a ski hatch. Remote-fold levers inside the load-space eases seat folding, creating 1,675 litres of cargo space that’s 1,970 mm in length. The central portion of the cargo floor hides an extra storage compartment, which can also fold and lock into position to divide the bay.

Two diesel engines are offered – a 2.2L four-pot and a 3.0L V6, both mated to an eight-speed auto. The twin-turbo V6 is offered in two states of tune. The range-topping ‘S’ model offers 275 PS and 600 Nm of torque for fast family fun. Standard across the range is self-levelling air suspension at the rear to replace the saloon’s coil springs.

Additionally, all Sportbrakes can be had with Jaguar Adaptive Dynamics. The active damper system continuously monitors the suspension and allows the driver to alter suspension and throttle response via buttons.

LEAKED: Undisguised rear image of Jaguar XF Sportbrake

This is a car Jaguar needs, to compete with German rivals, which is a wagon version of its XF saloon. The long overdue estate will make its debut at the upcoming Geneva show, but an image of its behind, without any disguise, has been leaked online. It’s grainy, and could have been scanned/snapped from publicity materials.

It’s not fashionable to simply call it the “XF Wagon,” so Jaguar has named it XF Sportbrake. The leaked pic shows a good looking estate car with a sloping roofline and sharply raked tailgate. Quite sleek, and it retains the signature rear look of the XF saloon, with a chrome bar linking the two tail lamp clusters.

And unlike some wagons, the rear screen appears linked to the side glass areas. Blacked out pillars are also present on Jaguar’s XJ limo.

This front image was released earlier by Jaguar itself to promote the car. No big difference with the facelifted XF sedan, but the chrome element in the lower bumper curves in the different direction.

Powertrains will be shared with the sedan, which means 2.2L four-cylinder and 3.0L V6 diesels will be offered beside a 5.0L petrol V8. The UK reports say there’s no supercharged XFR Sportbrake for now.

Jaguar XF gets two new variants, Sport and SE Business

Jaguar has introduced two new variants of the XF, called the SE Business and Sport editions, and both feature the 2.2 litre diesel unit in different output tunes.

The SE Business gets the 163 PS version, and adds satellite navigation, complete with a seven-inch touchscreen and HDD mapping on top of the kit already specified in standard specification form, which includes intelligent start stop, a 400 watt sound system with DAB digital radio, leather and suede-cloth seats and bi-Xenon headlights.

Meanwhile, the Sport model is based on the 2.2 Diesel 190 PS engine, and adds the full aerodynamic pack which debuted on the Diesel S. This includes a revised front bumper, a black grille element, side sill extensions, a subtle rear boot lid spoiler and a black rear valance.

Inside, the Sport features half leather suede-cloth seats, bond grain trim and dove contrast stitch as well as electric driver and passenger adjustment. The version also gets piano black trim with ‘Sport’ decals on the centre console and stainless steel foot pedals.

Jaguar XF facelift arrives in Malaysia – 3.0 V6 petrol, Diesel S and XFR 5.0 V8 Supercharged are the available variants

Jaguar’s facelifted XF sedan was officially introduced by Sisma Auto earlier today. Three variant forms of the new arrival are available, the base 3.0 V6 petrol and 3.0 V6 Diesel S as well as the range-topping XFR 5.0 V8 Supercharged, though the introduction made today was with the 3.0 litre petrol and diesel jobs.

The facelift gives the XF a series of cosmetic enhancements that bring the car’s exterior in-line with the design language introduced on the flagship XJ. The front fascia and lower rear valance treatments differ between model levels, but in general the grille and hood have been revised, as have the front fenders, which now sport new triangular side vents. As befits its status, the supercharged XFR features styling cues that differentiate it from the other XFs.

In terms of powertrain outputs, the AJ-V6 Gen III petrol has 238 PS at 6,800 rpm and 293 Nm at 4,100 rpm, and this is good enough to give it a 0-100 km/h time of 8.3 seconds. Meanwhile, the AJ-V6D Gen III S diesel mill offers 275 PS at 4,000 rpm and double the torque of the petrol unit, with 600 Nm at 2,000 rpm. It’s faster than the petrol variant to the century, doing it in 6.4 seconds.

As for the XFR, the familiar 5.0 litre AJ-V8 Gen III R supercharged lump puts out 510 PS at 6,000 to 6,500 rpm and 635 Nm at 2,500 rpm right through to 5,500 rpm, and these numbers are good enough to give the XFR a sub five-second performance from standstill to 100 km/h, specifically 4.9 seconds. All three model versions, which are equipped with six-speed auto gearboxes, have their top speed limited to 250 km/h.

Besides the revisions to the bodywork, new to the car are bi-function HID xenon headlamps, which incorporate LED daytime running lights that are shaped in a Jaguar ‘J-Blade’ fashion, and the LED tail lights are also new, reworked to extend towards the central portion of the trunk lid. The boot gets a power latch across the model range, and also wears a revised trunk lid trim, with a gloss black lower edge separating the tail lamps.

At the car’s official global launch at last year’s New York Auto Show, three new exterior shades were also introduced to the palette, and the alloy wheel selection has also been increased, with new offerings ranging from 18- to 20-inch units available for the car.

The cabin also gets updated, with changes coming in the form of new trim shades, seats, audio systems and instrument panel. Trim-wise, the centre console, dashboard, and steering wheel are dressed in a new colour scheme, with buttons and switchgear now in black. Additionally, the ‘Tungsten’ finish has been replaced by a more contemporary ‘Aurora’ theme.

The front and rear seats have also been revised, and feature a choice of new colour combinations and veneers. Elsewhere, the instrument cluster information display is now a full-colour TFT unit, and the seven-inch touchscreen now comes with a new polarising filter for improved contrast and reworked buttons below the screen, allowing for easier and clearer function selection.

A choice of three new audio systems abound, with the list headed by an optional 1,200 watt, 17-speaker Bowers & Wilkins premium surround sound system, and safety equipment includes front and side curtain airbags, CBC and brake assist.

In terms of pricing, the XF 3.0 V6 goes for RM488,888, the XF 3.0 Diesel S for RM509,888, and the XFR 5.0 V8 Supercharged is a mere snip at RM888,888, all prices excluding road tax and insurance.

Jaguar Land Rover thriving under Indian ownership

English brands Jaguar and Land Rover seem to be thriving under Indian ownership. The Tata owned company sold 130,090 units from January to June 2011, a 13.8% jump over the same period last year, attributed to improved products and strong growth in emerging markets such as China and Russia.

Reports mention that JLR’s new 2.2L diesel engine, as seen in the Jaguar XF saloon, has been good for the brands. Also, Land Rover’s stylish new Range Rover Evoque has found 7,700 new homes up till September, and is seeing high demand. The Evoque was launched in Malaysia earlier this month, priced from RM353,888 for the 2.2L Diesel 5-Door Prestige to RM393,888 for the 2.0L Petrol Coupe Dynamic Plus. Along with the sales figures, JLR’s profits (before tax) for Q3 of the 2011-12 financial year were up by almost 9% to £287million, while revenues were up 30% to £2.9billion, compared to Q3 2010.

Earlier, JLR said that it has successfully created more than 1,000 new jobs at its Solihull manufacturing plant. This 25% growth in workforce is to cater for a new model blitz of “40 significant product actions over the next five years.” And judging by recent form, there should be more than a few winners in there.

Frankfurt preview: Jaguar C-X16 Concept, 911 here I come!

This is the smaller sports car that has been missing in the Jaguar range, one that’s designed to take on the new Porsche 911 as a proper driver’s sports car. To debut in concept form in Frankfurt next week, the Jaguar C-X16 Concept is a sexy looking thing, a strict RWD two seater with 50:50 weight distribution and a hybrid. It’s a sure thing that Porsche engineers will be snooping around Jaguar’s stand at the IAA!

Billed as a “bold statement of Jaguar’s future design and technological intent”, the 4.4-metre long C-X16 is front engined and rear driven. It has lightweight aluminium bodywork sitting on the next-generation aluminium XK platform, and 50:50 weight distribution. With all those ingredients, and Jaguar’s reputation, there’s no way the production C-X16 will emerge as anything less than a great handling car. We’ll have to wait till late next year for that.

Under the hood is a supercharged all-alloy V6 engine producing 380 PS and 450 Nm of torque from 3.0-litres. This all-new quad-cam engine is a modular development of Jaguar’s AJ-V8 powerplant.

Supplementing it is an electric motor producing 70 kW (equivalent to 95 PS) and 235 Nm, available to the driver at the push of a steering-wheel boost button. Available for up to 10 seconds, this is inspired by the KERS system used in Formula 1. Besides “push to pass”, the electric motor also enables the C-X16 to perform as a zero emissions electric car at speeds of up to 80 km/h on low throttle openings.

The motor draws power from a 1.6kWh lithium-ion battery pack mounted behind the seats. It is predominantly charged through a rear axle electro-hydraulic brake energy regeneration system. The battery is cooled by chilled coolant from the climate-control system, the compressor for which is electrical rather than engine-driven for better efficiency.

The engine is paired to an eight-speed transmission with Stop/Start, recently launched in the XF. Utilising a Twin Solenoid Starter, the system shut down the engine in just 300 milliseconds after the car has come to rest, restarting it in the time it takes the driver’s foot to travel from the brake to the accelerator. First time mated to a supercharged engine, says Jaguar.

Figures? 0-100 km/h in 4.4 seconds, a limited top speed of 300 km/h and in-gear acceleration of just 2.1 seconds between 80 and 120 km/h. The hybrid system helps reduce CO2 emissions to 165 g/km and 14.5 km/l economy on the combined cycle. Yummy!

Frankfurt preview: Jaguar C-X16 production concept

Here’s another concept that will debut at Frankfurt show, which is shaping out to be quite big and busy fest. The C-X16 is what Jaguar calls a “production concept”, which means that this is a preview of a car that’s heading for the showrooms, not just a flight of fancy.

Designed by the same team behind the current Jaguar XJ, XF and XK – and headed by Jaguar Director of Design Ian Callum – the C-X16 concept is “a precursor to future Jaguar sports cars that will aim to set new class benchmarks in design, vehicle dynamics and technology,” according to the Tata owned British brand.

“Great Jaguars have always been beautiful, innovative and have looked firmly to the future. The finished C-X16 concept has the potential to do these things while retaining the ability to surprise, to excite and invigorate,” said Ian Callum as the concept neared completion.

“Jaguar has set in place bold, ambitious plans for the future. This production concept demonstrates the depth of design and engineering ability we have within Jaguar to make these plans come to life,” added colleague Adrian Hallmark, Global Brand Director at Jaguar Cars.

Jaguar’s previous sports car concept was the stunning C-X75 of Paris 2010, which shares quite a bit of design similarities with this teaser sketch – a good thing. Click here to see the C-X75.

Jaguar XJL 3.0D and XFS 3.0D diesels officially introduced

We wrote about them earlier, but today is the day they get their official introduction. Sisma Auto officially introduced the XJL 3.0D and XFS 3.0D diesels earlier this afternoon at a media preview.

Both the XF and XJ jobs wear the same AJ-V6D Gen III S 3.0 litre turbodiesel lump, which has 271 hp at 4,000 rpm and 600 Nm at 2,000 rpm for figures, and this is mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. Performance-wise, both cars achieve an identical 0-100 kph time of 6.4 seconds and a 250 kph electronically-limited top speed.

Other notable figures have to do with the percentage gains from going the oil burner route. The XFS 3.0D offers 105% more torque, 16% more power and has 23% quicker acceleration compared to its XF 3.0L V6 petrol sibling. That’s not all, of course – the 3.0D is also more frugal than the latter, consuming 35% less fuel and having 28% less CO2 emissions.

Sisma is confident about walking the diesel path with these two. “Some potential buyers have raised concerns about the quality of diesel in Malaysia and the long-term effect on the engine. But they can put their worries aside as Jaguar’s multi-award winning 3.0 litre V6 diesel engine has been redesigned to accept Malaysia’s Euro 2M diesel specification,” said Sisma Auto MD Syed Hussain Syed Mohamed.

As mentioned previously, the price of the XFS 3.0D is RM499,888, slightly higher than the 3.0 V6 petrol version’s RM488,888, while the XJL 3.0D goes for RM699,888, significantly cheaper than the RM958,888 asked for the 5.0 Premium Luxury V8 petrol.

Jaguar XF 2.2 diesel travels 1,313km on 64 liters!

Jaguar calls its new Jaguar XF 2.2 the most efficient Jaguar yet produced, and looking at its tested fuel economy figures, it’s probably true!

To see just how fuel efficient the XF 2.2 diesel is, Jaguar sent the Jaguar XF off on a trip across four countries driven by independent tester David Magdwick, and the results were 816 miles (1,313km) covered using just 64 litres of fuel, which is a fuel consumption of about 4.9 litres per 100km! My guess at combined real world driving – an average of 7 litres per 100km is possible.

Despite being fuel efficient, I don’t think the 4 cylinder oil burner XF will be a bore to drive either, considering it makes 190 PS and 450Nm of torque, mated to an 8-speed ZF automatic gearbox with an auto start-stop system.

It’s about time that Jaguar put a 2.2 litre diesel into the XF, considering their “premium only” stance awhile back. If you notice, the XF petrol range starts with a 3.0 litre V6 model, and Jaguar says this is intentional because they wanted to keep the marque a notch above its competitors like Mercedes-Benz and BMW, which has lower end models like the 523i and the E200 CGI.

There is a more upmarket diesel XF model – a 3.0 litre V6 diesel, which just so happens to be sold in Malaysia. A 2.2 litre diesel XF is essentially competes with some of the baseline diesel engines of the German badges – the 520d and the E220 CDI. They probably need to do this to keep up with the times though, as more people look towards fuel efficiency.

Will Sisma Auto launch the 2.2 litre diesel XF here to provide an alternative for those looking for a fuel efficient diesel in the 5-Series/E-Class/A6 segment? That would certainly be quite interesting, especially if it ends up being as competitively priced as the 520d, but not very likely (as in the price) as it would be a case of CBU vs SKD.

Jaguar XF and XJ 3.0 litre Diesel S variants in town

They’ve rolled in quietly, without any fanfare, and they’re doing very well indeed. Jaguar’s diesel variants of the XF and XJ have begun selling in Malaysia, and both Diesel S jobs are pretty much being snapped up the moment they arrive.

Both the XF and XJ diesels are similarly equipped with a AJ-V6D Gen III S 3.0 litre turbodiesel mill, offering 271 hp at 4,000 rpm and 600 Nm at 2,000 rpm, mated to a six-speed automatic transmission.

Performance-wise, the lump is listed as giving both models an identical 0-100 kph time of 6.4 seconds and a 250 kph electronically-limited top speed (the cars weigh in at around the same, and in fact the XF is heavier at 1,820 kg to the XJ’s 1,813 kg).

Pricing-wise, the XF Diesel S rolls in at RM499,888, which is just a shade above the 3.0 V6 petrol version’s RM488,888, while the XJ Premium Luxury LWB Diesel S is priced at RM699,888, a very enticing alternative to the 5.0 Premium Luxury V8 petrol variant, considering its asking price is loads lower than the latter’s RM958,888.

Some notes on the XF – the Diesel S isn’t the facelifted version of the car, but the news is that the 2011 model year XF should be arriving on these shores soon. XF fans will of course have to be very patient for the new 187 hp 2.2 litre option of the car to arrive here.

Jaguar Land Rover opens its first Indian plant at Pune

Jaguar Land Rover has officially opened its first assembly plant in India last week. Located in Pune in the Maharashtra region, the facility will first assemble the Land Rover Freelander 2, supplied to it by in Complete Knock Down (CKD) form from JLR’s Halewood plant in the UK. It has the capacity to assemble 3,500 vehicles annually.

Two variants of the SUV will be available, the TD4 SE Automatic and the SD4 HSE Automatic. They’re now cheaper by Rs 2.5-3 lakh compared to previous fully imported CBU units.

According to the Tata owned company, the Pune facility (it’s not newly built, production line at the Tata owned building was earlier used by Mercedes) will be subject to JLR’s mainstream launch quality processes and will be overseen by experienced manufacturing and quality managers who have moved to India from the UK.

“Today marks a significant step in our growth strategy for the Indian market. The opening of this plant demonstrates close co-operation between the parent company Tata Motors and Jaguar Land Rover and we are keen to develop this further,” said Carl-Peter Forster, CEO and MD of parent company Tata Motors.

Jaguar-LR to build four-cylinder engine plant in India

Tata owned Jaguar Land Rover is planning a new £400 million engine plant in India, sources told Autocar India. Apparently, the plant will be a “carbon copy” of a facility JLR has already announced for for the UK, which is believed to be in Wolverhampton. It’s possible that the Indian plant will be in Pune, a city that will also host a previously announced Land Rover assembly plant.

The Indian plant will make four-cylinder engines that are modular in design and up to 2.0 litres in capacity, according to sources. This fits in with JLR’s intention to replace the relatively expensive four-cylinder diesel and petrol engines it buys from previous owner Ford. The V6 and V8 engines they use will continue to be made by Ford in Bridgend and Dagenham for the time being.

It won’t be so soon though, as work on the Indian plant will only start after the UK plant. But when both new factories are up and running, they can churn out up to 500,000 units a year, enough to supply assembly in China, which was announced by CEO Carl Peter-Forster mid last year.

Jaguar Land Rover is doing pretty well under Tata ownership. They have just announced the biggest-ever profit in British automotive history with after-tax earnings of £1.043 billion for the recent financial year. This is few fold more than the £300 million previous record posted in the 2007, JLR’s last full year under Ford custody. Vehicle sales in China and India have made this possible – sales rocketed by 33% and 61% respectively.

Jaguar to make jet-powered C-X75 concept a reality, Williams F1 Team roped in to help build the Veyron rival!

The Jaguar C-X75 concept was one of the more beautiful cars we snapped at Paris 2010. Never thought that it would make production then – the centre of the car had micro gas-turbines that generate power to charge the batteries and extend range or provide supplementary power directly to the motors in Track mode.

But dreams do come true, and the C-X75 is going to production, Jaguar has announced. And they will be collaborating with the Williams F1 Team to create a mega priced Veyron rival that will be rather exclusive – they’re planning for a run of only 250 units, priced between £700,000 to £900,000. The car will feature F1 tech in aerodynamics, carbon composite manufacture and hybrid technologies. The C-X75 will have a carbon fibre tub chassis.

Autocar UK reports strong indications that the C-X75 will use a “highly boosted” 1.6-litre engine that is related to the four-cylinder engine Williams will use from 2013, as with all Formula 1 teams (this was announced by the FIA’s World Motor Sport Council last December). In addition, the hyper Jag will have will plug-in electric drive motors on both front and rear axles, so some form of torque vectoring AWD is likely.

Not much details on the powertrain for now, but Autocar speculates a figure of up to 1,000 hp combined. Project targets are 0-60 mph (0-96 km/h) in less than 3 seconds, 0-100 mph (0-160 km/h) in less than 6 seconds and top speed in excess of 200 mph or 320 km/h.

Going to the shops? The C-X75 will have an all-electric range in excess of 50 km and less than 99g/km CO2 emissions, so you can be as green as a Prius if you’re in the mood.

What about the turbine power as per the original concept? Jaguar will also work on that version, which will come later in the programme. It will feature miniature Bladon gas turbine engines, but Autocar says that over 200 of the 250 units will have the turbo four-pot, and not the jet. Jaguar’s parent company Tata has taken a significant stake in Bladon Jets, and will develop this tech as a medium-term aspiration.

Both the ICE engined and the jet powered car will have a 230 kg lithium-ion battery pack. Live pictures from Paris 2010 and the official snaps are after the jump.

Jaguar XF gets facelift – cosmetic changes, mostly

Jaguar has introduced its facelifted XF sedan at the New York show, and leading the list of changes are cosmetic enhancements which bring the car’s exterior in-line with the design language introduced on the flagship XJ.

Revisions to the grille, hood, and front fenders, which incorporate new triangular side vents, give the car a more muscular appearance. Three front fascia and lower rear valance treatments differentiate between model levels, and the XF Supercharged hood is fitted with louvers featuring the “supercharged” script, while the XFR gets styling upgrades that further differentiate it from the other XF models.

Also new are bi-function HID xenon headlamps, which incorporate LED daytime running lights arranged in a distinctive Jaguar ‘J-Blade’ signature. Over at the back, the tail lamps have also been redesigned and now extend onto the central portion of the trunk lid, and feature LED lighting for stop, tail and turn signal function.

A revised trunk lid trim with a gloss black lower edge separates the tail lamps, and the trunk also features a power latch on all models. Elsewhere, three new colour shades and an expanded selection of alloy wheels, ranging from 18- to 20-inch units round off the revised exterior styling.

The interior has also been updated, with changes coming in the form of new trim shades, seats, audio systems and instrument panel. The revised front and rear seats incorporate a ‘hoop’ design element on the seat and backrest that improves both appearance and support, and feature a choice of new colour combinations and veneers.

Trim-wise, the centre console, dashboard, and steering wheel get a new colour scheme, where buttons and switchgear are now in dressed in black, and the ‘Tungsten’ finish has been replaced by a more contemporary ‘Aurora’ theme.

Elsewhere, the instrument cluster information display is now a full-colour TFT unit, which offers greater resolution and clarity, and the seven-inch touchscreen now comes with a new polarizing filter for improved contrast – it also features a revised graphics palette, as well as additional buttons below the screen to switch instantly between different functions.

As for infotainment changes, three new audio systems are to be found, headed by an optional 1200 watt, 17-speaker Bowers & Wilkins premium surround sound system. Lastly, the hard-drive based satellite navigation system now offers multiple connection options, with two USB ports and Bluetooth connectivity now on for the ride.

Jaguar to debut 2.2 litre diesel XF variant

Jaguar has a new lump on the cards, a new 2.2 litre diesel unit. The new powertrain – which made its debut fitted to a prototype development mule – will feature in a future XF production car, with specifications and an estimated on-sale date to be announced at the New York Auto Show in April.

The new four-cylinder, 16-valve commonrail block develops 187 hp and 450 Nm of torque, and features a water-cooled turbocharger with low-friction pistons, new injectors and a new crankshaft. Performance specs include a 0-100 kph time of of 8.5 seconds and a 225 kph top speed.

It’s installed in a north-south configuration for the first time, and the new configuration allows the addition of a new oil pan and new electronic systems affecting the crankshaft, which allows a new intelligent Stop-Start system to operate more efficiently.

The last aims to reduce the prolonged time spent in the shutdown and start-up phase usually experienced in such systems – the Jag system overcomes this partly through the inclusion of the new crankshaft sensor and fuel rail pressure holding system, meaning the engine needs less time to restore drive through an innovative engine restart capability.

For example, in a busy roundabout, a driver may only briefly bring the vehicle to a stop, only to move off again quickly. In a conventional system, the engine needs to shutdown completely before restarting again; the system here is able to restart the engine while it’s shifting down from as little as 400 rpm, meaning it doesn’t need to come to a stop, translating to a more efficient restoration of drive capability.

Along with the new engine, the development vehicle also debuted an eight-speed ZF automatic gearbox, which will be paired to the block in production.

Jaguar to launch the hardcore 550 hp XKR-S in Geneva

Jaguar’s XK family will have a new range topper soon, as the British luxury brand has announced plans to launch the hardcore XKR-S at the Geneva Motor Show. Although Jag says it doesn’t depart from the XK’s “duality of purpose” which is GT luxury with incredible performance, the XKR-S gets even more power, revised suspension and a more aggressive look.

“The XKR-S is a bold and exciting new model for Jaguar,” said Adrian Hallmark, Jaguar’s new Global Brand Director. “We expect to attract both loyal and new Jaguar driving enthusiasts who still want the comfort, opulence and class only a Jaguar can offer, combined with inspirational performance.”

The XKR-S produces 550 hp with 680 Nm of torque, which allows it a top speed of 300km/h and 0-60 mph (0-96 km/h) in 4.2 seconds. It uses a tuned version of the supercharged AJ-V8 Gen III 5.0-litre, which makes 510 hp and 625 Nm in the XKR (0-60 mph in 4.6 sec).

Under the skin changes include a stiffer front suspension knuckle (improves steering precision), stiffer front/rear springs, fatter rear tyres, revised dampers and a 10mm lower ride height. Steering and differential settings have been modified and there’s a revised exhaust system in place.

Bertone creates ‘X-Type replacement concept’ for Jaguar

Jaguar lacks a volume seller that fights in the 3-Series/C-Class market and plans to launch one in 2013/2014 to take over from where the discontinued X-Type left off. If it looks anything like what Bertone has in mind, they could have a winner.

This sleek and unmistakably Jaguar concept is the work of Italian design house Bertone. It’s created “in agreement with Jaguar as a view to a possible X-Type replacement,” said Mike Robinson, Bertone’s chief designer. Called the B99, it will be paraded at Geneva.

Looks like a modernised old XJ in photos, but the wide, low roofed B 99 is actually about the same length as a Mercedes C-Class at 4.6 metres long, but this show car is almost 2 metres wide. It also has a clamshell door arrangement, which opens to a pillarless entry. It’s nothing like the current Jags, except for the grille.

“Our B 99 is definitely not a fastback. We think the fastback lifts the body volume too high above the rear wheels. Jags have always had the weight concentrated on the wheels,” Robinson was quoted as saying. He must really dislike the current XJ then!

One more time – Jaguar may build new compact sedan

If at first you don’t succeed, try again. That seems to be a definite line of thought for Jaguar at the moment – the company is more than merely toying with the idea of developing a D-segment sedan to compete with BMW’s 3 Series and Mercedes-Benz’s C-Class, by the sound of it.

According to a report, the boys at Whitley are considering a small sports car that can also be offered in sedan guise. Adrian Hallmark, the company’s new global brand director, said that Jaguar needed different – and lower priced – models in order to expand its horizons.

The company, he added, was at the beginning of the process, and it would be another four years or so before anything arrives, reiterating that the sports car would be for image and the sedan, for volume.

The company’s previous outing in the segment didn’t take off as expected – the wishy-washy X-Type of a decade ago never caught buyers’ imagination, to put it mildly.

The company states it isn’t going to make the same mistake with the new one, and that if it did venture into the compact executive segment, the offerings should not only be elegant and have great technology, but must have a sense of occasion and position itself above the competition, which is where Jaguar should be, Hallmark said.

Things looking decidedly rosier for Jaguar Land Rover

Life has certainly improved for Jaguar Land Rover in the past year or so. Production has rebounded since slumping during the global recession, with sales rising by 16% in September and by 40% since April.

With the improvement in business, the company has recently decided against the closure of one of its three plants in the UK, after reaching an agreement with trade unions. In 2009, Jaguar Land Rover had said it had plans to merge two of its plants to address the impact of the downturn.

The company has already begun hiring 1,500 new employees at its Halewood factory as it gears up for production of its new small SUV, the Range Rover Evoque, next year. With parent company Tata set to invest US$8 billion in Jaguar Land Rover’s factories over the next decade, there’s certainly more to smile about now than there was a couple of years ago.

Paris 2010: Live gallery of the stunning Jaguar C-X75

Jaguar pulled out a big surprise at Paris by showing off the stunning C-X75 concept car. While the name is as sexy as a forklift, the car itself is a beautiful piece of sculpture. A celebration of 75 years of Jaguar design and a look into the future of automotive technology, the C-X75 is a range-extended electric two-seat supercar.

The Tata owned British brand promises green motoring with top notch performance. The C-X75 has a zero emissions range of 110 km when running under battery power alone. On the performance front, the 778 bhp/1,600 Nm propulsion system combines electric motors at each wheel.

The centre of the car houses micro gas-turbines that can either generate 188 bhp to charge the batteries and extend the range of the car to 900 km or provide supplementary power directly to the motors in Track mode. The four electric motors provide torque-vectored AWD traction.

Jaguar unveils C-X75 RE-EV concept at Paris Motorshow

Celebrating Jaguar’s 75th birthday, the company has rolled out the C-X75 RE-EV concept vehicle. As the designation indicates, the car will be a range extended electric vehicle, employing micro gas-turbines.

This will then power four electric motors that produce 195hp each, giving you a total power output of 780hp along with an amazing 1600Nm of torque. This does the 0 to 100km/h run in just 3.4 seconds and Jaguar say that the car can potentially reach a top speed of 330km/h.

This isn’t an all-electric vehicle and can only run on pure electric juice for 110km. It employs two small turbine engines that can run on compressed natural gas, diesel, biofuel or LPG. When coupled with the turbine generators, it gives a total traveling distance of 900km.

Turbines aren’t something completely unexpected here – after all Jaguar Land Rover is part of a JV consortium that is working on developing a new ‘micro jet turbine’ for use in range extender hybrid drives. The consortium has been awarded a juicy £1.1 million grant by the UK government’s Technology Strategy Board for the research and development

A lightweight aluminum body houses the powertrain, while 50 percent of the metal content of the car is recyclable. It will also feature swan doors, while on the inside you will be greeted with a leather interior. The seat position is fixed and the steering wheel, pedals and instruments can be changed to suit each individual driver. Along with that, three high res TFT screens provide the driver with information and readouts that can be customized.

Unfortunately for Jaguar fans, the car is just a concept and there are no plans of putting it into production. Though if you liked some of the technology and design you’ve seen here, as with all concepts you could see certain things make an appearance on future models.

Armored Jaguar XJ Sentinel to debut at Moscow 2010

Mercedes-Benz has their MB GUARD program and BMW has their Security division. If you want to be secure in something a little different, Jaguar has a solution for you – the new Jaguar XJ Sentinel which offers ballistic protection of up to the B7 level, blast protection against 15kg TNT equivalent detonated within close proximity of the vehicle, and substantial under floor grenade protection.

The new long wheelbase only Jaguar XJ Sentinel’s protective capabilities is certified by QinetiQ, a globally recognised independent blast and ballistic testing organisation. It comes with a full 3 year or 50,000 mile factory warranty as well as comprehensive after-sales support from specialised technicians.

“The XJ Sentinel was designed and developed in partnership with industry leaders, and incorporates the very latest armoured vehicle systems to deliver extremely impressive levels of protection, while maintaining a very discreet appearance,” said the company’s Managing Director Mike O’Driscoll.

Because of the heavy weight of the Sentinel protection, it’s 385 PS 515Nm 5.0 litre normally aspirated AJ-V8 can only take it from 0 to 100km/h in 9.5 seconds. The car’s top speed is just 195km/h. Wonder why Jaguar didn’t use the 510 PS supercharged model, but the XJ Sentinel does get the better brakes from the supercharged model.

Jaguar XJ75 Platinum shows off customisation potential

Jaguar is 75 this year, and as part of a year long anniversary celebration, Jaguar’s design team has created this XJ75 Platinum Concept, a one-off that was displayed at the Pebble Beach Concours D’Elegance Concept Car Lawn over the weekend. It may look a bit overdone to some, but that’s because the XJ75 serves as a demonstration of the customisation potential of the new XJ limo.

Wearing a striking white and black contrast theme, the XJ75 Platinum is a 470 hp/575 Nm Supercharged XJ with new front, rear and side sills. Painted in Satin Matte Pearlescent White, standard chrome elements have been changed to either dark chrome or gloss black. The unique 22-inch wheels are in black and use a brushed contrast finish.

The contrast theme continues inside with gloss pearlescent white air vents, veneers and diamond stitch suede inserts to the seats and headliner, set against the backdrop of a full “Jet Softgrain” leather interior. Suede and leather accents are sprinkled throughout the interior.

Notice that the centre console houses a bespoke clock by Bremont. An independent British company, Bremont creates mechanical watches that are hand assembled in Switzerland. Entertainment is provided by a 1,200-watt Bowers & Wilkins sound system with 20 speakers via 15 channels.

“From a pure design perspective, the XJ75 is foremost about emphasising the striking proportion and presence of the new XJ, with a distilled black and white theme, which conjures up the sense of precious platinum. At the same time, the pure sporting character of XJ is brought to the fore by keeping the car’s clean graphic approach and further lowering its stance,” said Jaguar XJ Chief Designer Giles Taylor.

Tata reaps rewards from profitable Jaguar-Land Rover, Indian Land Rover assembly starts next year

Shares of Jaguar-Land Rover’s parent company, Tata Motors, rose to their highest level in almost 19 years after the company posted first quarter profits on strong demand for luxury SUVs and sedans. Tata made 19.9 billion rupees ($430 million) in the three months ending June, compared to a 3.3 billion ($71.26 million) lost last year. Tata Motors attributed the good news to the rebound in luxury vehicle sales.

Preparing for rising sales, chairman Ratan Tata, who is set to retire in 2012, wants to open Land Rover factories in India and China to pacify demand. This was confirmed by JLR CEO Carl-Peter Forster who said that Land Rovers will be assembled in India starting next year. Talks on producing Land Rover and Jaguar models on a JV basis with a partner in China is ongoing.

Jaguar-Land Rover is back into the black with a net income of 221 million GBP ($348 million) in the most recent quarter, a stark contrast to the same time last year, when it lost 64 million GBP ($101.6 million). In the period, JLR sold 57,153 vehicles, more than the 35,947 in 2009. Future plans for the leaping cat include the introduction of an XF estate (see Theophilus Chin’s version here) and a new entry level roadster.

Jaguar looking to bring out 3-Series rivalling sedan

Tata owned Jaguar Land Rover will be breaking into new market segments with the introduction of new models within the coming years, according to Tata Motor’s CEO Carl-Peter Forster who told Automobilwoche that to effectively compete with other luxury makes; they would have to bring out smaller sedans for the global market.

In that respect, we could be seeing a sedan model that will sit below the XF in the next few years, which could feature similar technologies seen in the new XF and XJ. This would be the successor to the Jaguar X-Type. Apart from that, there has also been reports that Jaguar has OK’d the production of the XE which is a XK based competitor of entry level sports cars like Porsche’s Boxster.

Apart from a sports car and a 3-Series competitor, Forster confirmed that it will also be releasing a long wheelbase version of the XF for the Chinese market and a wagon version of the XF (see artist’s impression). Tata are clearly trying to compete with certain German luxury brands that have a large chunk of the market share.

There are even rumours that JLR and Tata Motors may work together on the development of engines. One Tata source confirmed that they are looking into all options which include this one, to cut costs by synergising both company’s development processes.

“It is an exercise, a co-operation to be undertaken, we don’t know a date to announce – it is an exercise to explore Jaguar development of engines. [There are] no particular models so far,” said a Tata spokesmen about the matter. Tata bought JLR from Ford two years ago for $2.3 billion and if the deal goes through, it will be the first time the two have joined hands in a development process of any kind.

Limited edition XKR 75 to mark Jaguar’s 75th birthday

Jaguar will be releasing the limited edition XKR 75 in commemoration of the brand’s 75th anniversary at the 2010 Goodwood Festival of Speed next month. The car packs in both aesthetic and underskin changes.

Jaguar has increased power output to 523 hp while torque is now at 655 Nm, an increase of 20 hp and 30 Nm from the standard XKR 5.0-litre supercharged V8. Top speed is electronically limited to 280 km/h, while acceleration to the century mark is now done in 4.4 seconds, 0.2 seconds faster than stock. The extra twist warranted an upgraded torque converter for the six-speed auto gearbox.

To go along with the added speed, the XKR 75 gets an aerodynamic body pack with a front splitter, side sill extensions, a rear diffuser, larger rear spoiler and a new sports exhaust. The XKR’s computerised Active Differential Control reduces steering sensitivity at “very high speeds” for better stability and driver control.

Fittingly, only 75 units of the XKR 75 will be made available in UK, Germany, France, Italy, Belgium and Holland with a price tag of £85,500. This is bound to be a collectors gem.
