Nissan recalls 2 million vehicles over ignition relay problem – locally, the K12 March gets a special service campaign

nissan march k12

Right, it’s recall time again, folks. Next up to the base is Nissan, which has issued a global recall of 2.14 million vehicles, its third largest ever such exercise, over an ignition problem that may stall the engine.

The problem lies with a faulty relay in the ignition, and affects vehicles produced from August 2003 through July 2006. Nissan said that in extreme cases, the engine will stall and will not be able to start. On the recall list are a number of models, from compacts such as the March/Micra, Cube and Note right up to the likes of the Tiida sedan and Infiniti QX56 SUV.

The company said that the rectification would require about 30 mins, and that no accidents were reported to have been caused by the defect.

Meanwhile, in relation to this, Edaran Tan Chong Motor has issued a statement saying that Nissan has confirmed that all its Serena, Navara, Sylphy and Latio models sold in Malaysia are not affected by the recall. ETCM however added that some fully imported Nissan March units (of the previous generation K12) sold by it might be affected by the exercise.

As such, the company has started a safety service campaign for all K12s sold by it, and the safety check can be done by appointment at the nearest Tan Chong Express Auto Service centre or during the scheduled maintenance service. All labour costs and replacement parts for the safety check will be free-of-charge.

Nissan introduces the Fuga Hybrid sedan in Japan

fuga hybrid 1

Nissan has launched what is essentially its first mass-market hybrid vehicle in Japan. The Fuga Hybrid sedan will begin selling domestically on November 2, with a target sales figure of 200 units a month, and the car is slated to make its way to the US early next year, where it will be known as the Infiniti M.

The company has marketed a hybrid previously in the US, but the Altima hybrid came equipped with a Toyota hybrid system. This one features Nissan’s one-motor, two-clutch parallel hybrid system called Intelligent Dual Clutch Control. A HM34 high-response electric motor (offering 50kW of power and a maximum torque of 270Nm) and high-output, quick charge/discharge lithium-ion battery works with with an updated version of the 3.5 litre VQ35HR V6 block, with an electronic seven-speed hybrid transmission with manual shift mode in tow.

Nissan says the electric motor driving range for the Fuga Hybrid has been expanded for high-speed driving, operating up to over 100kph on a level highway, and that the car offers a fuel economy of 19km/l (in 10-15 mode).

fuga hybrid 2

Features and specs include the use of double-piston shock absorbers, 18-inch chrome-finish alloys, an electro-hydraulic power steering and an electric-driven Intelligent Brake system, with regenerative braking also to be had. The car is available in seven body colours, including a new shade called Eternal Snow White, which is a special titanium metallic color with Scratch Shield.

A host of three-letter acronyms are peppered in to the mix too – Intelligent Control Assist (Distance Control Assist), Intelligent Cruise Control, FCW (Forward Collision Warning), LDP (Lane Departure Prevention)/LDW (Lane Departure Warning) and VDC (Vehicle Dynamic Control including TCS).

fuga hybrid 3

The Fuga Hybrid also features an opposite direction driving warning system that gives the driver audio and visual warnings when the vehicle detects that it is going in the opposite direction on highways, based on the vehicle driving information (vehicle speed, GPS location, map information in the car navigation system), which is a world’s first, says the company.

Nissan Leaf production gets underway in Japan

leaf 1

Nissan has started production of its Leaf electric vehicle in Japan – the vehicle, which will go on sale domestically as well as the US in December, has begun rolling out from the company’s Oppama Plant, which also assembles models such as the Juke and Cube.

Part of the assembly line has been modified to mount battery modules at the stage of production where fuel tanks are traditionally installed, and motors and inverters are mounted at the point where engines are installed in gasoline-powered vehicles.

leaf 2

The Leaf’s lithium-ion battery modules are manufactured in Zama, Japan at Automotive Energy Supply Corporation, which is Nissan and NEC joint-venture company. The battery module, which contains four battery cells, is made in Zama and then shipped to Oppama, where 48 of them are assembled into the electric car’s battery pack.

Oppama, which will have an annual production capacity of 50,000 Leafs, will serve as the blueprint plant for subsequent production of the Leaf elsewhere. The car will also be built in the US at Smyrna, Tennessee, beginning late 2012 and in Nissan’s Sunderland facility in England in early 2013.

Go the luxury route with Nissan’s GT-R facelift – fancy being an Egoist?

egoist gt-r

It sounds a bit pompous, what with a name like that, but there’s nothing wrong with being self-involved, especially if it’s exclusivity you’re looking for.

Aside from the usual fare editions that have come about with Nissan’s facelifted GT-R, there’s the Egoist version, which the company says is an exclusive luxury edition ‘created by Takumi, or “master with greatest skills.”‘

egoist gt-r 2

The Egoist allows each customer to tailor his ride according to indvidual taste. It starts with a combination of interior colours to choose from – there are 20 selections in all, with four upper area interior colors and 10 lower area interior colors. Once you’ve selected the colour scheme that you want, the parts of the interior are shipped off to leather specialists Seton Company in Germany, where master craftsmen sew and stick carefully selected leather by hand.

The seats in the Egoist feature an exclusive quilted design with single and double stitching combined in a reticular pattern. Enhanced body grip performance, smoothness and fit are all provided for in the design.

Next, there’s a Bose precision sound system that’s tuned to you, quite litreally – the sound quality is adjusted exclusively for each owner, depending on individual driving position. The model also gets specially developed carbon composite-based woofers, which offer high rigidity and damping.

The car also features a Wajima lacquer (Maki-e) steering wheel GT-R emblem, created by Sakae Kubota, an accredited traditional Japanese lacquer craftsman. The emblem’s deep coloring and glaze will deepen and richen as time goes by, which shouldn’t be a bad thing if you view it every day.

Of course, the flashy bits don’t get left out in all this exclusivity, with some common-to-SpecV parts strapped on for the ride. The Egoist adopts the dry carbon rear spoiler from there, as well as the latter’s Rays forged alloy wheels, though here it’s finished in a new five-layer Blue Sword Chrome shade. A titanium exhaust system completes the list.

2011 Nissan GT-R facelift – full details unveiled!

nissan gt-r 1

Nissan has announced the details on its model year 2011 DBA-R35 GT-R, which features a large number of enhancements as part of its mid-life facelift. The list includes a refreshed exterior and revised interior as well as improved engine output and torque, greater fuel efficiency, revised handling and new wheels and tyres.

Six versions of the GT-R will be available in Japan – the Pure, Black and Premium editions as well as a SpecV version. Also in the lineup is a new racing circuit use-only Club Track edition and an ultra-exclusive Egoist version that can be custom-ordered according to each individual customer’s tastes.

nissan gt-r 2

Mechanically, the VR38DETT’s output has now been bumped up to 530 PS (523 hp) at 6,400rpm, with maximum torque of 612 Nm available from 3,200 to 6,000rpm, and it wears a new red colour engine cover to denote that. The output increase is accomplished from upping the turbo’s boost pressure, reworking the valve timing and air mixture ratios as well as from improvements to air inflow and gas outflow – the air intake inlet and sections of the exhaust feature larger diameter piping.

All this, with improved fuel economy – the car gets 8.5km per litre in 10-15 cycle mode, the claim goes – and cleaner emissions to boot. Transmission-related changes include a new SAVE mode to help improve fuel economy by modifying the shift schedules. Elsewhere, the car gets a 2WD mode to help facilitate easier exits from tight parking lots – the system only works at speeds below 10 kph and with the steering wheel turned more than halfway.

nissan gt-r 6

Outside, the car features a new front bumper with double rectifier fins and high intensity white LED lights, which are also to be found at the rear as fog lamps. The bumper helps to increase front downforce by about 10%, while also reducing air resistance inside the engine compartment and improving the radiator’s cooling efficiency.

Cooling in other areas has improved as well – that for the underfloor and exhaust is enhanced by extending the rear diffuser and the inclusion of a new rear bumper outlet to allow improved excavation of air.

nissan gt-r 4

The facelift gets a new aluminium free-piston shock absorber design, offering more precise damping force, faster load shifts and reduced friction, the last to give improved ride comfort. Other suspension changes include revisions to the spring rates and stabiliser bar at the front, along with a reworked caster to offer better straight line stability and improved cornering ability. A new 390mm rotor also gets included in the mix, offering improved braking force and fade resistance as well as extended rotor life.

The car sits on new, lighter forged aluminum-alloy 10-spoke wheels made by Rays, finished in a new deep gloss Hyper Blue Black Chrome colour, which has five-layers of paint coating. The new wheels work with Dunlop SP Sport MAXX GT 600 DSST CTT tires, which features a new compound to offer improved tyre grip.

nissan gt-r engine

To enhance rigidity further, the car gets a lightweight carbon composite/aluminium honeycomb strut bar in the engine compartment and an additional support member in the passenger side of the instrument panel.

Not much in the way of change for the interior, with dress-up items being the main draw. Besides a newly shaped instrument panel pad and new material stitch lines, the centre console cluster gets the carbon treatment, and there are matte black-finish switches and smoked chrome-plated accent rings for the console and air-conditioner vents.

nissan gt-r 3

Meanwhile, the GT-R badge on the steering wheel gets a new velour-like gloss coating and the magnesium paddle shifters now have a finish that highlights the base material. Improved seats are also to be had – revisions have been made to the shape and cushion stroke, while seat surface length has been increased to provide better support and a new seatback design offers improved fit. The Black edition features leather bucket seats using a Recaro design based on the structure of the Pure and Premium edition seats.

Six exterior colours are available, with two being new – Meteo Flake Black Pearl and Aurora Flare Blue Pearl. The GT-R will begin selling in Japan on November 17, and will make its way to other global markets after February next year.

Nissan teases new Tiida/Versa – new Latio for us?

tiida sketch

Nissan has released a sketch of its new global sedan, likely to be the new Tiida/Versa. No other details as yet, but the car is set to be unveiled at the 8th China (Guangzhou) International Automobile Exhibition in December.

Currently, the Tiida is available in both four-door hatch and sedan form in Japan, the latter being called the Tiida Latio, and locally as the Latio in both guises.

The interesting question is of course when the new B-platform vehicle will make its way here to replace the current one.

Paris 2010: Nissan Townpod – Tokyo refugee found in Paris

Looking more like a soft toy than a car, the Nissan Townpod looked like a refugee from the Tokyo Motor Show showing up in Paris. The rationale behind this creation is as amusing as the looks – Nissan says that the Townpod is for a new breed of entrepreneur, one whose business and social lives are blurred. This car is as multifaceted as the young people it’s targeting, with comfort and style of a passenger car and the utility of a commercial vehicle, they say.

Easy access is provided by Rolls-Royce style rear hinged doors with no B-pillars, while access to the load area is via barn style split doors that slide out sideways instead of opening outwards like on the Mini Clubman. Another trick is the ultra slim “disappearing rear seats” that can “merge” with the front units when slid forward. A hatch-like sun roof directly above the cargo area allows the Townpod to carry taller objects.

Underneath the skin, the Townpod is similar to the Nissan Leaf electric car, which will go on sale this December in the US.

Smart to sell a Nissan-derived B-segment car in the US

Smart USA has announced that it has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Nissan on the collaboration of a new vehicle for sale in the US market. The car, a five-door, B-segment gasoline engine model derived from Nissan, is expected to go on sale in late 2011.

The sketches provide an inkling as to what the future model, which will be built on a new global platform in one of Nissan’s factories in the US, might look like. “The new vehicle will expand smart USA’s product lineup, offering five-seat capacity while maintaining the core principles of efficiency and conservation,” said smart USA president Jill Lajdziak.

This looks to be the first step in the broad cooperation plan Smart’s parent company Daimler and the Renault-Nissan alliance have planned, as an interim before new products fully jointly developed by Daimler, Nissan and Renault arrive in the market in 2013.

Nissan Townpod EV – Leaf technology in new segments

Nissan has revealed the Townpod EV at the Paris Motorshow, which looks very much like an electric Cube. The Townpod is said to cater to all manner of situations, be it the nuclear family off for a long weekend or the weekly visit to the supermarket.

Utilizing the same technology found in the Nissan Leaf, the car’s charging point is found on its nose. The showcar in Paris is covered in Stratosphere White paint, with electric blue hints visible behind the door handles, number plates, spokes of the alloy wheels and within the headlamp pods. The van will feature suicide doors as well.

Inside functions such as climate control and media playback are accessed with two centrally digital screens. The top screen provides information such as car speed, battery status, remaining range and navigation system, while the bottom touch screen provides controls for nav systems, audio system and allows users to perform system checks.

Other interesting features include a thing called the “Puck”, which is a rubber ball, with a wide groove cut into it. It is said to be able to accommodate drink holders and mobile phones. Easing loading issues, the Van’s boot features an interesting design, with doors hinged to either side of the back. The addition of a hatch-like sun roof, directly above the cargo area, allows Nissan Townpod to carry taller objects.

Tan Chong buys majority stake in Nissan Vietnam

Selling Nissan cars is a profitable business for the Tan Chong Group, and the company has made a move that will see it expand greatly in fast growing Indochina, which has a combined population of 107 million and GDP of US$109 billion (2009 figures).

ETCM (V) Pte Ltd, a wholly owned subsidiary of Tan Chong Motor Holdings Bhd, has entered into a capital assignment agreement to acquire 74% charter capital contribution in Nissan Vietnam Co Ltd. For that, ETCM will pay Denmark-based Kjaer Group A/S US$7.4 million cash.

With that, the terms of a joint venture agreement entered by Nissan and Kjaer in October 2008 will be amended, and ETCM will replace Kjaer as the largest share capital holder in Nissan Vietnam. The remaining 26% is held by Nissan. ETCM will manage Nissan Vietnam with the Japanese carmaker in a JV agreement.

“The proposed joint venture is a testimony of business co-operation between Tan Chong Motor Group and Nissan Motor to further expand the Nissan franchise in a key Asean emerging market,” the company said in a statement.
