Nissan returns to the Le Mans game, as engine provider

Nissan has announced that it has entered into an exclusive two-year official partnership with Signature Racing to provide the latter its Nismo-tuned VK45V8 engines for Signature’s racecar competing in the LMP2 class of the new Intercontinental Le Mans Cup (ILMC).

It heralds the brand’s return to racing under the Le Mans banner, brought about by Nissan’s desire to promote its engines to a much larger global audience.

The team, which will be known as Signatech Nissan, is aiming high for the inaugural season, looking to both finish at Le Mans 24 Hours and secure a podium place at the end of the year-long global championships.

Although the official race car livery and full driver line-up for the new season will be announced over the coming weeks, F3 star Franck Mailleux has been confirmed for the ILMC and the Le Mans 24 Hours. The ILMC season gets underway on March 19 at Sebring in the US.

Nissan ESFLOW – sports car body for LEAF EV technology

This is the Nissan ESFLOW concept car, which marries sports car looks and performance with zero emissions EV technology from the Nissan LEAF, the reigning European Car of the Year. Fear that we’ll all be driving golf karts in the future? Nissan says that the ESFLOW “shows that driving can still be as much fun tomorrow as it is today”.

This Geneva bound two-seater concept has a shape that isn’t too far away from a 370Z, is rear wheel drive and does 0-100 km/h in less than five seconds. There are two electric motors placed above the axis of the rear wheels in a mid-ship position, one powering each rear wheel. Torque to each wheel is controlled for optimum handling and efficiency.

Range is over 240 km on one charge and power comes from the same laminated lithium-ion battery packs used in the LEAF, but are located along the axis of the front and rear wheels in the ESFLOW. This centralises the mass of the car, and thus its rotation point, which is close to the driver’s hips.

The swoopy composite body covers an aluminium chassis with its own roll cage. Roll bars are incorporated in to the structure behind the seats to take the entire load of the car in the event of a roll over, so there are no thick A-pillars here. Nissan says the unobstructed view is akin to a fighter pilot’s.

The colour scheme chosen for the ESFLOW is inspired by glaciers, “highly reflective solidified liquid with blue tints in its shadows”. There’s more blue in the headlights, Nissan emblem and wheel inserts.

Renault-Nissan Alliance flying, with record sales in 2010

It’s all green and go for the 12-year-old Renault-Nissan Alliance, which reported a record year in global sales, with 7,276,398 units achieved in 2010, a 19.6% increase over 2009 in a market that expanded by 11.8%.

Renault and Nissan sold 2,625,796 and 4,080,588 vehicles respectively, making for a 14% jump for Renault and 21.5% for Nissan. Lada sales accounted for 570,014 units, a 37.6% increase compared to 2009. Dacia and Renault Samsung Motors also posted percentage increases, by 12% and 19% respectively.

In Europe, the Renault group volume increased by 7.4% with 1,642,000 units sold in a market that contracted by 3.7%, and moved up one place in the rankings to become number two in passenger car (PC) sales.

Outside Europe, South Korea was notable – with 155,697 units sold, this represented an increase of 16.5% in passenger car sales, adding up to 11.9% of the market share in the country, which is Renault’s fourth largest market globally.

Meanwhile, for Nissan, China became the company’s largest market worldwide, with 1,023,638 units sold, a 35.5% increase on 2009. Sales were led by the midsize sedan Sylphy, with 142,367 units sold and the flagship car model Teana, with sales of 140,842 units.

In the US, Nissan and Infiniti sales totalled 908,570 units, an 18% increase over the previous year, while in Japan, government subsidies and launches of five new models such as the March, Juke and Serena contributed to the 7.7% increase in sales, with 645,320 units delivered.

In Europe, total sales increased by 13% to 555,924 units, with the main market being the UK, with 96,419 units sold, followed by Russia with 84,288 units.

Mazda to build Premacy variant for Nissan in Japan

Mazda and Nissan have announced an agreement to expand the scope of Mazda’s original equipment manufacturing (OEM) supply to Nissan – as part of this new accord, Mazda will begin supplying its Premacy MPV to Nissan from May this year.

Mazda will supply a clearly differentiated version of the Premacy – which is of course known as the Mazda5 outside Japan – to Nissan for sale in Japan. It’s certainly not new territory for Nissan; the company’s OEM business involves cross-platform sharing with a large number of automakers across the globe.

The two companies have already been collaborating under an existing mutual OEM agreement – Mazda provides the Bongo Van/Truck to Nissan, which is sold as the Nissan Vanette, while Nissan supplies the AD/AD Expert to Mazda, which Mazda sells as the Familia Van.

Proton Perdana replacement is the Nissan Fuga – only for top level government use, no private sales planned

The identity of the model that will form the basis of the Proton Perdana replacement has been talked about not only at the mamak, but in the motoring circle as well. We’ve heard of this before, but the news is now out. Berita Harian Online reports that the Nissan Fuga will be the Perdana replacement model.

The Fuga is a large rear-wheel drive sports sedan that is sold as an Infiniti M outside of Japan. It sits on the Skyline platform and BH’s report says that the car will be brought in CBU with 2.5-litre engines. The current gen Fuga 250GT is the 2.5L V6 unit from the VQ HR series with 225 PS and 258 Nm.

However, before you think of another “Inspira style” deal, the report’s source reveals that the first shipment of 150 units will be brought in as official cars for top ranking government officials. We presume that this will phase out the stretched Perdanas that ministers currently use. The Fuga will be used exclusively by the government, although the source added that if Proton gets encouraging market feedback, it will consider sales to the public.

There’s no mention whether the Fuga in question is the muscular bodied latest version that debut in late 2009 or the previous gen car, which still looks handsome today. Also not revealed is Proton’s name for the car and the level of differentiation, which we guess won’t be much other than some badge swapping. And if the Fuga is for high level officials, what will be the replacement for the standard wheelbase Perdana currently in service?

This move marks Proton’s first collaboration with Nissan. Will there be more on the way? The report’s source says that it is possible that some Nissan models will be made at Proton’s Tanjung Malim plant as there’s excess capacity there. This statement however ignores the fact that long time Nissan brand guardian Tan Chong has its own facility in nearby Serendah, which rolls out cars like the Teana, Sylphy and Grand Livina.

The Fuga has plenty of presence in the flesh, and Infinitis have received lots of praise for how they drive in the West – it’s a pity that none of us will experience this, unless you’re a senior government chauffeur! What do you think of this move and the choice of car?

LIVE from Guangzhou: Nissan Sunny details and images!

Greetings from Guangzhou, China! We’re reporting live from Auto Guangzhou 2010 at the gigantic complex that also hosts the world famous Canton Fair. No carmaker can afford to miss out on a Chinese motor show today, even if it’s not Shanghai (GZ is China’s third largest city, KL feels tiny in comparison), so there are still some world debuts to shout about. Mainly from homegrown brands, but Nissan also showed its new Sunny for the first time, and that’s what we’re focusing on here.

“Sunny” is a name that’s right up there in recognition, probably only beaten by “Saga” and “Wira” in Malaysia, and Nissan has chosen this cheerful name for its Vios/City challenger. The Latio, Nissan’s previous attempt, didn’t do too well as an experiment in straddling both B and C segments, and that’s most probably due to its space efficient but unflattering looks. Same recipe here, but some lessons have been learned.

For a small family car, space will always have priority over “sporty looks”, and that’s reflected in the Sunny’s shape. This “baby Teana” looks much sleeker and palatable than the Latio though, and it still provides the latter’s generous cabin room. The footprint is about the same – the 1,695 mm width is unchanged while the 4,426 mm length is up by just 11 mm.

Wheelbase remains at 2,600 mm, which is 50 mm longer than the Vios and 100 mm less than the C-segment Sylphy’s. The Latio is the Peter Crouch in its class; Sunny is less lanky by 21 mm, but still dwarfs over the Vios.

Underneath it all is Nissan’s V platform, as used on the March/Micra. Front struts and a rear torsion beam is expected and the showcar wears high profile 185/65 R15 Bridgestones, the exact same size on the Latio. There’s a full sized spare tyre under the boot floor. Brakes are all discs, with the fronts ventilated. Steering is EPS.

The Sunny is powered by the HR15DE 1.5-litre engine. This modern unit is tuned for economy (up to 5.8L/100 km) and drivability rather than outright power and it makes 112 PS at 5,600 rpm and 139 Nm of torque at 4,000 rpm. Doesn’t look spectacular on brochures like the Honda City, but that car’s headline 120 PS and 145 Nm is achieved at at a dizzying 6,600 rpm and 4,800 rpm respectively. Transmission options are a five-speed manual and Nissan’s Xtronic CVT.

The Sunny’s March roots is evident in the cabin, which has the supermini’s curvy design and round elements. The dashboard is similar and the March’s unique donut style climate control is carried over, although the Sunny’s centre stack houses square instead of round air con vents.

Also not present here is the March’s integrated stereo, replaced by Nissan’s usual 2-DIN unit as found in the Grand Livina and Latio. The Sunny’s instruments are in a traditional twin dial layout. The steering wheel and gear knob design is familiar too.

The Sunny was mobbed by the crowd, but I did manage to sit in for awhile. Like the Latio (and unlike its rivals), there’s an obvious focus on comfort in the Sunny. That long wheelbase frees up plenty of legroom and the seats are very nicely shaped and sculptured for a budget car.

There’s even a fold down rear armrest with twin cupholders and rear air vents with independent 2-speed control, something even the Teana doesn’t have!

The show car had leather seats that are thickly padded and very cushy (both front and rear), and unlike the Latio, the front seat adjusters return to their normal positions on the outside of the seat. All door handles are in chrome for the “classy” look and there’s a sunroof to cater to the Chinese market.

Speaking of that, there are three trim levels in China – XE, XL and XV – and all except for the base trim gets keyless entry with Start/Stop button and a sunroof as standard. Dual airbags, ABS, EBD and Brake Assist are present across the board.

Sounds like a model that will do well in Malaysia if Tan Chong decides to bring it in or assemble it. Full gallery after the jump!

New Nissan Sunny makes debut at Guangzhou auto show – global offering is set to enter 170 markets worldwide

Nissan Sunny 1

Here’s a name that should sound very familiar, except that it’s on a completely new face. Nissan has unveiled an all-new global sedan called the Sunny at the 8th China (Guangzhou) International Automobile Exhibition.

The Sunny name isn’t new to China – it was first introduced in 2003 on the first locally-built model from the new Dongfeng Nissan partnership, and the first Sunny quickly helped establish the Nissan brand in the passenger vehicle market there.

Nissan Sunny 2

This one is set to take things further afield – Nissan says the car will be a projected class leader in fuel economy, and is expected to appeal to young families in their 30s looking for a medium-sized sedan that combines a dynamic upscale design with the space, quality and features associated with the model and the brand.

It’s powered by the ubiquitous HR15DE 1.5 litre block, with dual injectors per cylinder and a partnering new-generation Xtronic CVT transmission being new to China. Other specs include front MacPherson struts and a torsion beam for the rear suspension.

Nissan Sunny 3

The car will be produced at the Dongfeng Nissan Huadu Plant in Guangzhou for the Chinese market, and the new Sunny will go on sale first in China in January 2011 before progressively making its way into 170 countries worldwide under different vehicle brand names.

Nissan and Mitsubishi expand scope of cooperation – next gen Triton and Navara are set to be twins!

Mitsubishi and Nissan will expand their current scope of cooperation, and the joint projects “will further strengthen mutual competitiveness”, both carmakers have agreed. The projects will range from JDM mini cars to Thai made pick-up trucks.

Nissan and Mitsubishi already have several OEM agreements for the domestic market, mainly for K-cars (MMC for Nissan) and commercial vehicles (Nissan for MMC), and this relationship will continue and grow. Nissan will provide a light van/wagon to Mitsubishi for the Japanese market, while Mitsubishi is to provide an SUV to Nissan for sale in the Middle East. There’s no mention which models these are. Both parties are also in talks for Nissan to provide Mitsubishi with “upper-end segment models” for the domestic market.

As for the new developments, a 50:50 joint venture company will be set up for product planning and engineering of mini cars for the Japanese market, reads the official statement, although Bloomberg reports that the fruits of this JV will be sold worldwide. The current arrangement is mainly of Nissan selling rebadged Mitsubishi K-cars.

The other big news is more relevant to us in ASEAN. Both parties are looking at moving production of the current generation Nissan Navara to Mitsubishi Motors’ plant in Laem Chabang Industrial Estate in Chonburi Thailand, which churns out the Triton. This move will of course benefit both parties in terms of cost.

In the longer term, the two companies are looking at manufacturing and engineering collaboration of a new generation one-tonne pickup truck. If this takes off, the next generation Triton and Navara could be non-identical twins underpinned by the same platform and rolling out from the same factory, like how Ford and Mazda do it in Thailand. The Mother Trucker’s drivetrain paired with the Triton’s style and cabin doesn’t sound too bad, does it?

Nissan GT-R sets new 0-100 kph benchmark – 3.046 secs

nissan gtr

A MY2011 Nissan GT-R has set a new acceleration benchmark for the vehicle, with a standard production DBA-R35 taking just 3.046 seconds to get to 100 kph from a standing start on the main straight at the Sendai Highland raceway in Japan.

The event, held last month, was witnessed by a group of Japanese journalists and recorded by a V-Box measuring device, and Nissan engineers said the time would have been even faster had the road temperature been higher than the 13 degrees Celsius on the test day in Japan. Nissan chief vehicle engineer Kazutoshi Mizuno, the R35′s Godfather, told journalists that with warmer track temperatures “the GT-R will reach the world of two seconds!”

Now, a search for the fastest production cars on the planet might have you thinking the same GT-R clocked that run in 2.9 secs, but that time is actually the 0-60 mph measurement, which is just a range shorter than the 0-100 kph (effectively, 0-62 mph) one being bandied about by Nissan.

Whatever the case may be, both times place the current R35 as the 13th fastest production car, and though the new sprint time was achieved with the car in R-Mode, journalists at the Highland Raceway test were still able to achieve 3.1 seconds for the 0-100 kph dash in the car’s less aggressive A-Mode. Which still puts it right alongside the Koenigsegg CCXR and Ferrari 430 Scuderia, number 14 and 15 on the list …

Fancy the Nissan 370Z, but want a clear view of the sky and feel the air blowing though your hair at the same time? Well, guess that’s where the Nissan 370Z Roadster comes in. The soft-top two-seater, which made its official debut at KLIMS, is just the item for those unihibited moments.

Like the Coupe version, the 1,565 kg convertible comes wearing a VQ37VHR 3.7 litre twin-cam V6, with Variable Valve and Lift Control, which produces 332 hp. The car at the show featured a 7-speed automatic with paddle shifters, but the brochure lists the 6-speed manual with SynchroRev Match mode option, so the CBA-Z34 can of course be ordered too.
