Detroit 2011: Potholes, nightclubs and the Hyundai Curb

Along with the new Veloster coupe, Hyundai showed off a concept car at the 2011 Detroit show. It’s a compact crossover concept called Curb, as we already know from the pre-show teasers.

The Curb concept is an Urban Activity Vehicle penned by Hyundai California Design Center. Sounds strange, but “potholes” and “nightclubs” were part of this car’s big idea. Apparently, Hyundai designers wanted to create a vehicle loaded with tech that was “at home in an urban environment with potholes and densely packed nightclubs on the streets”. Do you have a movie set in your mind now?

Anyway, because of the potholes, a rugged car was needed to protect Hyundai’s Blue Link connectivity features against impact and shock. This “technology rugged” design direction formed the Curb.

Don’t understand? Neither do we, that’s why we’re not auto designers! “City driving was going to be its forte, not crossing the Rubicon trail, but we wanted it to have urban armor for daily driving on city streets. It needed to empower its passengers in this setting,” said designer Jason Brown.

The wrapraround glasshouse takes after the visor of a sport bike helmet, and the profile is dominated by a boomerang trajectory line. The thin, sleek headlamps and taillamps dive into the vehicle, creating the illusion that they are connected into the engine compartment or interior, Hyundai adds. The ‘technology rugged’ look is completed by 22-inch five spoke wheels and Michelin rubber with saffron colored tread pattern.

Inside, a large acrylic screen with multiple zones allows information to be passed between passengers. The steering wheel itself is an opaque surface with a monitor showing through. There are also monitors in the back of the headrests and Heads Up Display (HUD). Music is selected via a 3D carousel of album cover art.

Wild, yes. But we can imagine a Nissan Juke competitor out of this, minus the sci-fi dashboard of course. Gallery after the jump.

Detroit 2011: Hyundai Veloster gets 3 doors, 2 clutches

At NAIAS 2011, Hyundai wheeled out its unique Veloster coupe that brings with it many firsts for the marque. The affordable coupe has three doors and comes with Hyundai’s first dual-clutch transmission, for instance.

Like the VW Scirocco and Renault Megane Coupe, the Veloster is a two-door hatchback/coupe type of car with a rear hatch. But the much touted “third door” isn’t the rear hatch, but a conventionally hinged door on the passenger side, which Hyundai says provide safe and ready access to the rear seats.

Unlike in the Mazda RX-8, the Veloster’s rear door is only on the passenger side, and can open independently without first opening the front door. The handle is hidden Alfa 147-style.

In terms of size, the Veloster is 4,218 mm long and 1,790 mm wide, which is 138 mm longer and 50 mm wider than the Honda CR-Z. It has quite a long wheelbase of 2,649 mm. Hyundai says that the Veloster has more cabin volume than the CR-Z, Scion tC and Mini Clubman. Weight is 1,172 kg.

Apparently, the cabin is sport bike inspired. The center stack is supposed to resemble the fuel tank, the air vents are tailpipes, while the floor console mirrors the seats of a bike. I can’t really see that link, but it’s a funky dashboard nevertheless. All the lines seem to point to the push button starter, which isn’t hidden in some dark corner, but proudly placed in the centre stack – Ultraman style.

Powering the Veloster is a 1.6 Gamma engine with direct injection, the smallest Hyundai engine to use GDI. Equipped with Dual-CVVT, it produces a strong 138 hp at 6,300 rpm and 167 Nm at 4,850 rpm. That’s 86.3 horsepower per litre, which Hyundai says is best in class. Another figure they’re proud of is 40 mpg, or 14.2 km/l economy on the highway.

The Gamma’s drivetrain accomplices are six-speed transmissions, manual or dual-clutch. The all new DCT is developed by Hyundai and gains 5-6% improvement in fuel efficiency as well as 3-7% improvement in acceleration compared to a torque converter auto. The Veloster has an Active Eco mode which modifies engine and transmission control for “more than a seven percent improvement in real-world fuel economy”.

Suspension wise, it’s a McPherson strut front suspension and a light-weight V-torsion beam for the rear, the latter with an integrated 23 mm stabilizer bar to allow bracing of the arms for greater stiffness. Steering is EPS, and turning circle is best in class. The standard tyres are 215/45 R17s, but 18-inch alloys (with painted inserts) are available with 215/40 performance rubber.

Hyundai HCD-12 Curb Concept to debut alongside Veloster

We already know that Hyundai will be showing off its Veloster at next week’s North American International Auto Show in Detroit, as they’ve released teasers of that hatchback/coupe. It won’t be alone though; the fast rising Korean carmaker will also show this off – the HCD-12 Curb concept.

This teaser shot (we’ve brightened the dark bits for a better view) shows a compact crossover, a Nissan Juke rival that sits below the Tucson perhaps? It features a slim, aircraft cockpit style glasshouse and blackened A-pillars. There’s also a prominent character line that flows down from the rear lights to form a figure 7. Swelled wheelarches house big wheels with claw-like star spokes. Doesn’t look too outlandish for Hyundai, which has a range of bold new models.

The cabin however, is pure show car. Image is after the jump.

Hyundai Veloster Coupe – opening doors to a new take

It does get convoluted with doors, sometimes, what with two-, three-, four- and five-doors to contend with, mentally speaking. You can imagine a coupe or hatch for the first two designations, a sedan for the third and a hatch for the last.

Now, if you were told that the Hyundai Veloster Coupe, which is set for its world premiere next week in Detroit, has three doors, or four if you will (see, it gets confusing), what would you imagine?

Not quite what you would, really, because the Veloster isn’t exactly quite shaped up like the 2007 HND-3 Concept, even if it does retain the name, which is an amalgamation of velocity and roadster.

This one features two doors on the passenger side and a single, larger door on the driver’s side. A bit like the Clubman, but this one is a full-sized offering, which translates to far easier ingress/egress for the rear occupants even with right-hand drive compared to the Mini. A large tail gate makes it four doors, if you want to be sticky about designation.

No details have been announced, aside from the teaser photo released by Hyundai, though reports are that the car will come wearing a 1.6 litre direct-injection four-cylinder pot and a dual-clutch tranny. More to come next week when the Veloster arrives.

ix-Metro concept car joins Hyundai’s 1 Utama roadshow

Hyundai-Sime Darby Motors, importer and distributor of Hyundai vehicles in Malaysia, took the effort to bring in a concept car for the recent KLIMS 2010 motor show, shown alongside the facelifted Santa Fe SUV with a new heart and the new Avante. But if you weren’t in PWTC last month, there another chance to view the ix-Metro concept before it goes home to Korea.

HSDM will be having a roadshow at the new wing (High Street) of 1 Utama shopping centre in Petaling Jaya from tomorrow till this Sunday (5-9 Jan 2011), and the ix-Metro will be displayed there. The concept will be present throughout, but there will be special demonstrations on Friday, Saturday and Sunday at 12.30 pm, 2.30 pm, 4.00 pm, 5.30 pm, 7.30 pm and 8.30 pm.

Besides this effort to “bring the motor show to the public” as HSDM calls it, visitors can also learn about, touch, feel and sit inside the current range of Hyundais including the new Santa Fe, Sonata YF and Tucson.

Hyundai completes development of its ix35 hydrogen FCEV

hyundai ix35 fcev

Hyundai has completed the development of its third-generation ix35 Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle (FCEV), and the vehicle will begin in-service testing next year in limited numbers, working towards a market debut in 2015.

The FCEV version of the ix35 (known as the Tucson here) is equipped with a 100 kW fuel cell system and two hydrogen storage tanks rated at 700bar, and offers a range of 650 km on a single charge, as well as a maximum speed of 160 kph.

Both the fuel cell stack and drive system’s output rating of the ix35 are identical to the previous generation Tucson FCEV, but the ix35 features a 21 kW battery for its energy storage system compared to the earlier 100 kW super capacity unit in the second-gen Tucson FCEV, which also had half the hydrogen capacity at 350bar.

The company says that the overall volume of the fuel cell system has been downsized by 20% compared to the previous system, via modularisation of bulky parts in the fuel cell system, including the fuel cell stack, balance of plant (BOP), inverter and the high voltage junction box.

Most impressively, the ix35′s working range is a 76% improvement over the previous offering, which had a 370 km range on one charge. In other numerical terms, the ix35 FCEV has a petrol equivalent fuel efficiency of 31 km per litre, a 15% improvement over the old one’s 27 km/l.

Auto Guangzhou: Hyundai Verna hatch is for China only

The new Hyundai Verna (Accent to us) made its world debut at the Beijing show back in April, and now it’s Guangzhou’s turn to host the premiere of the hatchback version of the Verna. Hyundai says that this five-door hatch is exclusively for the Chinese market, although we don’t see why shouldn’t they sell it elsewhere too.

To go on sale in January, this Beijing built Verna is powered by 1.4 and 1.6-litre Gamma CVVT engines. The 1.4 delivers 108 PS and 135 Nm while the bigger unit produces 124 PS and 155 Nm. Chinese customers get to choose from a five-speed manual or four-speed auto. There’s a “fuel economy package” for the base engine that extends fuel economy to 16.1 km/l. This package includes a tweaked CVVT system, smart alternator/air con compressor plus motor-driven power steering.

Looking a lot like a smaller and sportier i30, the Verna hatch is shorter than the sedan by 255 mm at 4,085 mm. The wheelbase of 2,570 mm is of course unchanged, and is shorter than the C-segment i30 by 80 mm. As a recap, click here for a gallery of the sedan – notice that the hatch’s grille does without the chrome strip on the top and has a single bar, not two. The dashboard is unchanged.

Hyundai’s new i40 (VF) wagon to debut in Geneva

hyundai i40 a

Hyundai’s new VF wagon, which will make its world premiere Geneva next March, is to be called the i40 in Europe. The Elantra-based estate will be followed by a sedan variant later in the year. The company says that the vehicle is aimed at further shifting consumers perception of Hyundai to a more aspirational position.

Designed at Hyundai’s European R&D facilities in Rüsselsheim, Germany, the new i40 is the company’s first D-segment model to be specifically developed for the European market, progressing the ‘fluidic sculpture’ design language by connecting the front, side and rear profiles of the rakish lines to present a bold, dynamic shape.

hyundai i40 b

The estate will also become Hyundai’s most innovative model on sale on the continent, and will include the latest environmental technologies developed under the company’s Blue Drive eco-programme, as well as a powertrain line-up which boasts best-in-class performance and fuel economy and very low CO2 emissions. No other details have been announced, but that should all change as it gets closer to the vehicle’s debut in Geneva.

Hyundai-Kia to use dual-clutch gearbox, CVT from 2011

The dual-clutch gearbox, popularised by Volkswagen and adopted by the likes of Ford, Volvo, BMW and Porsche today, will find its way into Hyundai-Kia vehicles from next year. First out with be a six-speed unit, followed by a seven speeder, supplied by Germany’s LUK and branded as Parallel Shift Gearbox (PSG).

Like VW’s DSG, PSG has two computer operated clutches, one handling even gears and the other odd gears. Compared to a torque converter automatic, shift speed and efficiency are improved, but it’s the latter Hyundai is chasing after. “To improve our fuel economy, we are aggressively trying to apply various technologies,” Dr Woong-chul Yang, president of Hyundai-Kia’s R&D division said.

The “various tech” mentioned includes the continuously variable transmissions (CVT), which will be introduced in smaller models to boost mileage. In the US, Hyundai has announced plans to lift its corporate average fuel economy rating to 50 mpg (17.7 km/l) by 2025. Four upcoming models including the new Elantra (Avante for us) will get at least 40 mpg or 14.2 km/l on the highway. Transmissions are key, but other measures include direct-injection engines, turbochargers and hybrid tech.

Reports from Australia say that the recipients of the PSG will include the ix35 and i45, which we know as the Tucson and Sonata respectively.
