Aprilia RS125 Challenge Cup and Junior Riders Cup

Aprilia Junior GP

The Aprilia RS125 Challenge Cup is a one-make motorcycle race series using race-prepared Aprilia RS125 two-stroke motorcycles. One can participate by purchasing a rental package which consists of an Aprilia RS125, a set of Pirelli SuperCorsa tires (one set per round), pit support, fuel, lubricants and fluids as well as entry fees for all five rounds. It all costs RM25,000. There is also a RM5,000 crash and damage deposit. All of this can be paid via an affordable payment plan. Riders will have to supply their own racing equipment of course, such as helmet, back protector, gloves and transport, etc. An ownership package is also available where you can instead own the racebike.

The race is divided into two categories, a Junior Riders Cup for 13 to 17 year olds and Open Class for enthusiasts aged above 18. The series will be part of the Malaysian Super Series Championship and the first round will be held on the weekend of the 11th and 12th of April 2009. at the SIC, with a total of 5 rounds, including a support race at the Malaysian Motorcycle GP in October 2009.

Aprilia Junior GP

Each round consists of 2 practice sessions, a qualifying session, and two races with a total of 12 laps. At the end of the season, two qualifying riders will be selected for a full sponsorship to participate at the “Red Bull Rookies 2009 Final Rider Selection” in Spain.

“The absence of a Regional rider development programme drives us to create this series. We need a platform for young riders within the Asia Pacific region to develop their passion, racing skills and career. We have presented this series to the various ASNs’ in the region and are tirelessly promoting for international entries to create the right environment where talent from across the region can directly compete with each other, compared and further developed,” said Moto Millia Managing Director, Razak Al Malique.

Aprilia Junior GP

He added, “Out of a maximum grid of 25 riders we have reserved 15 slots for international participants. If we succeed in getting competitors from countries such as Australia, Indonesia, Thailand, Japan, China and so on, this will be a series where top racing teams will scout for talent. The entry cost has been kept at a bare minimum and it is unlikely that we will breakeven but for us successful implementation of the series is much more critical than gearing for commercial returns.”

Moto Millia also has a Junior GP Racing Dream program using the Aprilia RS50, which is an effort to find a MotoGP rider for Malaysia. A few riders have been selected and trained over the past 2 years and from what I hear they really are quite talented. I think this is a good effort by Moto Millia, but as you can see from the figures above, going further in the motorsports world really burns alot of money (RM25,000 for a rental package is no joke) and impossible to afford for many people without some form of sponsorship. It’s no wonder there are Mat Rempits out there as it’s very expensive to go legal with racing.

AP system may be extended until 2020

MITIMinister of International Trade and Industry Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin reports that his ministry has received requests from AP holders for the AP system to be extended until 2020. The AP system was originally scheduled to end by December 31st 2010, which is the end of next year. But what’s even worse news is that according to StarBiz’s unnamed sources, the government has already tentatively approved for the AP system to be extended until 2010. That’s more than a decade of hand-outs to go. Is this the eagerly-awaited NAP review they’ve been talking about?

Tan Sri Muhyiddin said the government would try to “lead errant AP holders back on track”, and convert them into viable businesses instead of just very rich paper traders. He also said he found out that permits were sold to “parties who shouldn’t be owning them”.

Some AP holders have successfully built proper businesses from the money they earned through APs, though many will argue that it is still an unfair system in whole because only a selected few are handed out this chance to earn enough capital from the APs to grow their businesses. Naza is one prominent example. They’ve even recently gone into the F&B industry and that is working out quite well for them. Just look at the queues outside Bubba Gump in Mutiara Damansara.

2009 Lexus IS 250 facelift launched in Malaysia, now available in 2 variants!

Lexus IS250 Facelift

After slightly more than a year of being the niche choice of C-segment luxury sedans buyers who want to buy into the whole Lexus experience at the cheapest price point possible, the Lexus IS 250 now receives a facelift, and now comes in 2 variants – standard and luxury.

Under the hood is a 2.5 litre V6 engine featuring D4 direct injection that puts out 205hp at 6,400rpm and 252Nm of torque at 4,800rpm, giving the car a 0 to 100km/h acceleration time of 8.4 seconds and a top speed of 225km/h. The engine also has Dual VVT-i variable valve timing on both the intake and exhaust camshafts. This engine is mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission with enhanced lock-up clutch control in 5th and 6th gears for better fuel economy. The transmission also has an AT fluid warmer for better cold start performance.

Lexus IS250

The external changes are very subtle. The front grille receives a minor update with a restyling of the vertical bars as well as a different number of bars. The front lip of the bumper is also now integrated for a smoother experience. The front bumper has been extended by 10mm which gives the profile a sleeper look. Side mirrors now feature turn indicators, which were previously on the front fenders on the pre-facelift car. On the rear, the bumper now has a blacked out area to emulate the look of a diffuser. The brake lamp cluster has also had minor changes made to them.

Differences between the Lexus IS 250 and the Lexus IS 250 Luxury differ mainly in the equipment you get. The IS 250 Luxury has the option for a tilted moonroof. The IS 250 has a leather interior trim while the IS 250 Luxury gets 3 choices wood as well colour coded to the exterior colour, including Birdseye Maple which comes in either light brown or gray.

Other features that are only available on the IS 250 Luxury are electrically adjustable steering column, an electro-chromatic rearview mirror, a rain sensor for the wipers, illuminated scuff plates on the door sills, a rear window sunshade, semi-aniline leather, ventilated front seats, and a memory function for the front seat position. The 14-speaker Mark Levinson system with a 6-CD in-dash changer that is MP3/WMA capable is also only available on the IS 250 Luxury while the standard IS 250 gets a 13-speaker Lexus Premium system.

Lexus IS250

However I think the differentiation between the two models went abit too far as for such an expensive sedan, it’s sad to see the standard IS 250 getting regular headlamps while Xenon HID is only reserved for the IS 250 Luxury. The HID headlamps come with Adaptive Front Lighting, which adjusts the headlamp angle according to the roads for better illumination on winding roads.

Safety features include 4-wheel ABS, Brake Assist, EBD, airbags all-round including knee airbags and a multi-stage airbag for the driver, and VDIM which integrates brake, throttle, steering and transmission control into the stability control system.

The standard Lexus IS 250 goes for RM270,000 while the more premium Lexus IS 250 Luxury retails at RM305,000. Look after the jump for more images of the car.

Cheaper RON95 fuel to be introduced mid-2009

Fuel Wallet GaugeIt’s right in the middle of the month now, and some of you might be wondering what happened to any fuel price revisions that typically happens at the starting of a month, and whether there will be any revisions in the middle of this month.

Well, don’t keep your hopes up high as Datuk Shahrir Samad says average crude prices have remained at a similiar level this month compared to the previous, so no fuel price revision is expected. However he does have some new updates for us regarding fuel prices.

By middle of this year, RON95 will be introduced to provide cheaper fuel so that people who have cars that aren’t so demanding on the octane levels can use it. But RON97′s price will be increased via a fuel tax, which will be used to subsidise the new RON95 fuel. RON95 will replace RON92 and is expected to be priced at the same level as RON92 is currently. He expects RON92 fuel to be an average of 10 to 11 sen cheaper than RON97.

His ministry will also reveal a chart on how retail fuel prices in Malaysia are calculated next week, which should put an end to endless questions by consumers on how the prices are calculated and how much the government is making from us via fuel taxes, if they are earning any at all of course. All of this will be answered next week, if things go as planned. Fuel prices in Malaysia are dependent on Singapore’s Mean of Platts Singapore (MOPS), a regional fuel price monitor. Australia also uses MOPS to calculate their fuel prices.

Jan 1 2009: 242 summonses issued for rear seatbelt rule offenders

Rear seatbelt

Has anyone been stopped or noticeably been checked out by the cops yet for rear seat belt usage (or more appropriately, lack of)? I haven’t but on the first day of the new year alone, a total of 242 summonses were issued related to the new rear seatbelt ruling. Out of this amount, the most summons were issued southern-most in Johor (95 summonses) while on the other end of the Peninsular we have Penang, racking up only 6 summonses. The totals for Kedah is 12, Negri Sembilan 11, Perlis 12, Pahang 2, and Malacca 11, while the remainder summonses and states were not reported in the dailies.

Have you started buckling up at the back, or are you still going on with old ways hoping that the cops don’t spot you? I personally have not seen any specific road blocks just to check whether rear passengers are buckled up, not even an increased amount of cops on the lookout for offenders, but this is probably because the federal police in KL did not plan any special ops specifically targeting rear seatbelt rule offenders, instead just instructing cops to watch out for them during regular daily routines.

Seatbelt fine of RM300 from 1st January 2009

Rear seatbelt

From the new year onwards, all passengers in a car whether sitting in the front or back have to buckle up or face a RM300 fine. This only applies if the passenger is over 17 years old, but if you are younger, the driver of the car is the one who will be punished as according to Road Transport Director-General Datuk Solah Mat Hassan, it is the responsibility of the driver to ensure the safety of the minors that they are driving.

This new seatbelt ruling includes the rear seatbelts, but excludes the following:

  • Cars registered before 1st of January 1995
  • Cars registered after the 1st of January 1995 but not equipped with rear seatbelt anchorage points
  • Commercial vehicles such as taxis and rental cars
  • Vehicles with more than 9 seats including the driver’s
  • Transport vehicles with capacity above 3.5 tonnes

Wait, that’s not all. The RM300 fine will be in effect only within a “grace period” of between the 1st of January 2009 to the end of June 2009. From the 1st of July 2009 onwards, this fine will be upped to RM2,000 and you could even go to jail for up to 1 year. Yes, it may seem harsh… but if you buckle up, you won’t have to worry. It’s for your own safety anyway.
