Naza 206 Bestari In-depth Review

206_bestari_1.jpg

[ LATEST UPDATE: Naza has updated the Naza 206 Bestari for the 2008 model year. Click the link for more information! ]

I remember falling in love with the Peugeot 206 a few years ago when I was in college. There was this blue one parked in the college parking lot belonging to some lucky girl with generous parents, and every time I walked up to the college entrance I would take the opportunity to admire it. It’s a sporty little hatchback, and the addition of the air vents on the hoods did wonders to add to it’s sporty look. Although Peugeot has released the 207 recently, the 206 still remains in it’s portfolio, serving a different market segment. Now Malaysians have the opportunity to experience the Peugeot 206 in CKD form, with the launch of Naza’s latest car, the Naza 206 Bestari, previously known by it’s codename the Naza NX-02.

Naza NX-02 open for booking

photoshopped_naza_bestari.jpg

Pictured above is my extremely newbie attempt at photoshopping how the Naza NX-02 could look like. Forgive my noob-ness. At least I tried! :P Advertisements for the new Naza NX-02 have appeared in the newspapers, meaning the car should be launched really soon.

naza_206_advertisement_smal.jpgThe advertisement (click the image on the left for a bigger version of the advertisement clip) says the car is open for booking now, and the price is given as RM6X,XXX, which should put it in the RM60,000 to RM70,000 range, just as mentioned before. Other specifications mentioned are 1.4 liter MPFI engines, 4-speed Automatic with Porsche Tiptronic System, a well-tuned agile chassis, 5-door versality (hatchback), central digital display, dual airbags, anti-lock braking system, and a 3 year / 100,000 km warranty. The advertisement states that ABS is standard on AT models, which seems to indicate that a manual transmission model will be available. It also means anti-lock brakes will not be available on all models, but dual airbags will likely be standard following the trend set by the Naza Sutera.

Since we don’t have the official specs of the Naza NX-02 yet, I’ll just list the specifications of the Peugeot 206 1.4 Tiptronic that it is based on here. The 1.4 liter engine is a 1,360cc 8-valve single-cam engine that makes 74 horsepower at 5,500rpm and 120Nm of torque at a low 2,800rpm. This should make the new Naza hatchback really nice to drive around the city, as the engine will not be out of breath at lower RPMs. An 8-valve configuration promotes better airflow velocity at low RPMs, hence the excellent low-end torque. Other examples of modern engines using 8-valve configurations are like Honda’s 1.5 liter i-DSI engine which uses 8-valves. Top speed is rated at 161km/h and 0-100km/h acceleration is rated at 15.2 seconds.

206_dash_small.jpgThis is the original Peugeot 206 dashboard, so I expect the Naza NX-02 version will look like this with slight variations. They did mention a central digital display as one of the features, so I expect it is that small LCD at the top of the center dashboard area. Or they could also mean they’ve moved the dashboard meters to that area, like the Naza Sutera’s and are displaying data like speed and RPM in digital form like Honda S2000, though this is more of wishful hoping from a gadget-cum-car enthusiast than reality, likely not to happen.

Naza Sutera Sports Concept

sutera_sport.jpg

Naza’s R&D Team has developed this special Sports Concept version of the Naza Sutera. From what I can see from this photo sent in by reader Xefron, it’s clad in some nice black paint as well as a sporty bodykit which includes a rear roof spoiler.

I personally do not like hatchbacks roofs that curve down the way the Naza Sutera’s does (I prefer an angle closer to 90 degrees but the Sutera’s curve is more of 60 degrees?), but the addition of the roof spoiler has improved the rear’s look. The Sports Concept also uses sports rims that look like Ray’s Wheels Volk Racing TE37 wheels at first glance to me. This 6-spoke wheel design has been very popular with car enthusiasts lately. It is said that if the public gives good response to this sporty concept, it will be produced by Naza as an additional model to the current two model lineup.

The car also has a horizontal red and white stripe which reminds me alot of Proton’s Race Rally Research stripe and Nissan’s Nismo stripe.

Naza Sutera (Naza NX-01) to be launched tomorrow

nx01_01.jpg

Naza will be launching it’s new Naza Sutera (Naza NX-01) tomorrow in Bertam, Penang. The Naza Sutera will be Naza’s first foray into the national mini car market, currently dominated by the Proton Savvy and the Perodua Myvi. Naza also sells the Kia Picanto but that’s not really the same price range and it is considered an import car.

NAZA NX-01 Spyshots

small_nx01.jpgThese are spyshots of a new car being tested on Malaysian roads. It is a small mini-MPV type of vehicle which belongs in the Hyundai/Inokom Atos and Perodua Kenari class of cars. It’s heavily plastered, but the overall shape and certain design features leads me to believe that it is the Naza NX-01, which is supposed to be launched on the 22nd of April 2006. That’s 10 days from now. Check out the spyshots after the jump.

Naza to launch NX-01 and NX-02 within two months

Naza Automotive Manaufacturing Sdn Bhd will be rolling out two new non-KIA models in the next two months. Codenames, NX-01 and NX-02, they will be built at Naza’s plants in Gurun and Pekan respectively.

small_lobo.jpgNaza hinted at some details of the two models. The NX-01 will be a small 1.1 liter car in the Perodua Myvi range. It will be priced between RM30,000 to RM40,000. Naza says the model was originally designed by Pinanfarina but Naza’s own team had made some changes to the design to suit local market tastes and to have an identity of it’s own. These little hints seem to point to the Hafei Lobo 1.1, a Chinese car designed by Pininfarina. Check out this link for more details on the car. Launch date is scheduled to be on the 22nd of April 2006. Update: See Naza NX-01 Spyshots!

small_206.jpgThe other car, codenamed NX-02, would be launched in May. It will be priced between RM65,000 and RM75,000. Not much details on this have been revealed by Naza, but it would most probably be the Naza-badged Peugeot 206 which was announced September 2005. The Peugeot 206 has since been phased out by the hot new Peugeot 207, but it still looks good.

The model introduced would likely be the 1.4 liter SOHC 8 valve model.

Naza wants to manufacture more Peugeots

Naza Group managing director Tan Sri SM Nasimuddin SM Amin plans on turning it’s new Penang plant into an exclusive production facility dedicated entirely to the Peugeot marque.

Naza is currently bidding for the rights to manufacture other Peugeot cars. It already has the rights to manufacture a Malaysian version of the Peugeot 206 for the regional market.

The construction of the Bertam, Penang plant is expected to start next month and to be fully completed by early 2007. It will have the capacity to produce 100,000 cars annually. The plant cost RM1 billion and was 60% funded by the company’s own generated funds and the remainder via borrowings.

Nasimuddin said the local Peugeot 206 is to be called the Naza 206 and will have 40% local content. He is tight-lipped on the expected selling price of the car.
