Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG available in Malaysia for RM1,999,999!

The SLS AMG is the AMG division’s first exclusive to AMG only car and it’s now here in Malaysia, priced at RM1,999,999 OTR without insurance! Of course, if you want a gold one you’ll have to pay more. In Europe, the car is sold at 149,000 Euros but you’ll actually have to pay an additional 19% VAT tax which brings the price up to 177,310 Euros. That’s about RM 892k. Add our Malaysian taxes and you’ll end up with way over double the amount, but I guess it’s all for a good cause.

For that 2 million buckaroos with a ringgit change you get a 6.2 litre V8 producing 571 PS at 6,800rpm and 792Nm of torque at 4,750rpm. The motor is a M156 massaged to be extra special installed in the SLS, rechristened the M159. It gets a new intake system, revised valves and cams, and a dry sump instead of a wet sump. On the inside, there’s plenty of real metal and dead cow, Mercedes-Benz Malaysia assures.

The car you see above is the first right hand drive SLS AMG in the world and it’ll be on display rotation at various locations and showrooms in Malaysia. Look after the jump for photos and a video from the preview this morning.

B-Class AMG not exactly a B-Class AMG?

F800 Concept

Apparently the B-Class AMG we talked about right below this story isn’t exactly going to be a B-Class AMG, according to a new story by Auto Express. What AMG will actually be doing is developing a compact “CLS lite” about 4,500mm long based on the next generation B-Class chassis. That’s just slightly shorter than an E90 BMW 3-Series.

The car is known internally in AMG as the C117 EVO and is expected to be priced around £30,000, much cheaper than the £50,000 C63 AMG. Although the earlier Automotive News report says the car is likely to have a high performance four cylinder engine, Auto Express reports that the car will be a “32″ AMG car, powered by a 3.2 litre Comprex pressure wave supercharged V6.

Is there market for a Mercedes-Benz B-Class AMG?

Mercedes-Benz has some seriously big plans for its next generation Mercedes-Benz B-Class. The tallish “mini MPV” front wheel drive B-Class is set to get a high performance AMG version with a tuned up four cylinder engine! There are of course many other pocket rockets in its segment such as the 135i, the Audi S3 and the Volkswagen Golf R, but the B-Class is the only ‘tall’ competitor.

Perhaps what AMG will do is slice its new 5.5 litre V8 bi-turbo in half and perhaps destroke it to get a nice turbocharged 2.8 litre engine. Right now the most powerful petrol-powered current generation Mercedes-Benz B-Class is the B200 Turbo, which makes 193 horsepower and 280Nm of torque which is just about near Golf GTI standards. Or a Brabus version will bump power up to 223 horses and 310Nm. A Brabus tuned up B200 CDI diesel will do 190 horses and 350Nm of torque.

Is there a market for a really fast B-Class? Is there is, you can be sure we’ll see a Volkswagen Golf Plus GTI accompanying the Golf GTI in the next generation! Whatever it is, the car is supposed to be released after the next generation B-Class’s debut in 2011.

VÄTH V58 – Crazy output for Merc’s baby roadster

Have you heard of VÄTH before? I haven’t, but you’ll definately hear its latest creation when it zooms by. As if the Mercedes-Benz SLK55 AMG’s 355 bhp and 510 Nm isn’t enough for such a small roadster, the Hösbach based tuner has enlarged the capacity of the V8 to 5.8-litres (hence the V58 name) and plonked in a supercharger! The end result is an insane 565 bhp and 770 Nm of torque.

Upgrades include sports pistons, sports distribution shafts, exhaust manifolds, high-grade steel catalysts, sports exhaust silencers, polished cylinder heads, a sports air filter and a long-stroke crankshaft. Together with ECU tuning, the V58′s new top speed is 310 km/h. At 30,785 euros, it’s not cheap though. A locking differential a “home-produced and patented” fuel cooler is optional.

This SLK sits on a user adjustable sports suspension which lowers the car from 20 mm to 65 mm, while the brake upgrade kit brings six-piston calipers with 378 mm discs. 19-inch wheels with 235/35 front tyres and 275/30 rears complete the package.

The exterior mods don’t look too over the top, although the removal of the big three pointed star leaves an empty round hole, and the LED strips sit uncomfortably near to the foglamps, looking very much like an afterthought. The V58′s lower body gets carbon add ons including a rear diffuser. Unsurprisingly, more carbon appears in the cabin.

Kleemann boost kits for Mercedes-Benz now available from German Motors

Kleemann Engine

Kleemann tune-up kits are now officially available in Malaysia through its official appointed dealer German Motors Sdn Bhd. The name German Motors may be familiar to you. Their outfit is based in Section 13 PJ and they are an independent service center for Mercedes-Benz, Smart, BMW, VW, Volvo and Audi cars in Malaysia, but naturally Mercedes-Benz cars are their speciality considering Managing Director Fritz Imbacher was previously with Hap Seng Star and was responsible for the setting up of their Bandar Kinrara service center.

German Motors can perform the installation of all products available from Kleemann Denmark, as long as it suits your car. Tune-ups that only involve ECU upgrades can usually be done on the same day. Since November 2009, German Motors has performed Kleemann upgrades on 14 cars so far, with 3 customers doing a complete upgrade including exhaust headers and performance camshafts.

Here are some example prices available:

  • 215hp, 310Nm 200K1 kit for E200K (W211): RM 8500
  • KD box for any CDI diesel (not only Mercedes): RM4,400
  • ECU upgrade for M272 V6 (W204, W211): RM5,450

There are also ECU upgrades for smart cars according to Mr Fritz but the price and technical information has yet to be released by Kleemann. Also, at this moment there aren’t any tune-up kits for the new turbocharged CGI engines found in the W212 E200CGI/E250CGI. According to the Kleemann website, the 200K1 kit for the M271 Kompressor engine is not just a simple ECU upgrade. Components in the kit include a ‘K-Box’, an air filter, pulleys/belts and a fuel regulator.

Look after the jump for a map to German Motors.

MB C230 makes way for C250 CGI in Malaysia

The W204 Mercedes-Benz C230 with the 2.5 litre V6 engine has been replaced by a new more torquey C250 CGI model here in Malaysia. The new C250 CGI like its larger E250 CGI sibling is powered by a higher output version of the 1.8 litre turbocharged direct injection engine. The new C250 CGI goes for RM287,888 in Malaysia.

The new C250 CGI produces 204 horsepower at a lower 5,500rpm point as compared to the V6 model, and more torque – 310Nm between 2,000rpm to 4,300rpm. However, the 7-speed 7G-Tronic has been replaced by a 5-speed automatic, as these 4-pot turbo engines are only available with the 5-speeder while the 7-speeder is mated to the V6 and etc engines. Fuel consumption is much better at between 7.2 to 7.9 litres per 100km.

One thing to note though – these inline-4 CGI engines in Malaysia are a little different compared to the models you get overseas. The inline-4 engine – referred to as the M271 DEH or M271 Evolution – originally had a ‘lean burn mode’ for its direct injection system.

This is a special economy mode where the air-fuel mixture is able to be tuned for more air and less fuel, thus saving fuel and producing good amounts of power at the same time. In lean burn mode, the Piezo injectors inject fuel multiple times in one cycle.

Mercedes-Benz says that our fuel quality is not suitable for lean burn mode thus the lean burn function of the ECU has been deactivated. Our M271 engines will do direct injection but only in homogeneous mode, which uses a ratio of 14.7:1. Being a turbocharged engine, there will probably be thoughts of flashing the ECU with a performance version of the software to gain more power. These aftermarket software MIGHT (I’m not sure) re-enable lean burn and reduce the reliability of your engine. Be sure to check.

For now, the C200K continues to run the supercharged Kompressor version of the M271, but Mercedes-Benz Malaysia says a C200 CGI is coming very soon.

AMG’s new M157 5.5 liter twin turbo V8!

It looks like Mercedes-Benz will be phasing out normal aspiration from its AMG cars, with the exception of the SLS AMG for now. The M156 is the V8 engine in the confusing “63 AMG” range of cars. Now I say confusing because the engine isn’t really a 6.3 litre, but a 6.2 litre since it displaces 6,208cc. It makes over 500 horsepower in various stages of tune, with the highest being 563 horses in the SLS AMG where it has been massaged and known as the M159 instead.

Replacing the M156 will be a new M157 – a 5.5 litre (5,461cc) V8 engine with twin turbochargers and direct injection, producing between 544hp up to 571hp. In 544hp tune, the engine makes a massive 800Nm between 2,000rpm to 4,500rpm (1.0 bar boost), while the 571hp version produces 900Nm (1.3 bar boost) between 2,500rpm and 3,750rpm. The engine is a bore-biased engine, with its pistons measuring 98.0mm x 90.5mm.

This engine will be showcased in Geneva installed in an S-Class mated to an AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed automatic transmission. That S-Class will be called the S 63 AMG. It will go from 0 to 100km/h in 4.5 seconds with the 544hp tune, while with 571hp tune (which AMG calls the AMG Performance Package), 0.1 seconds is shaved off that number. The AMG Performance Package will also increase the top speed limiter from 250km/h to 300km/h. I thought AMG was the performance thing for Mercedes-Benz cars but now it seems that the performance version has a performance version!

For the first time, an AMG engine will feature direct injection with spray-guided combustion and piezo-electric injectors. Other notable specifications also include a full aluminium crankcase with cast-in Silitec cylinder liners, a Bosch MED 17.7.3 ECU, four-valve technology with electromagnetically adjustable camshafts, an air/water intercooler in between the V-bank, generator management and a start/stop function as standard.

So now the ’63 AMG’ cars are turbocharged. The other AMG engine in the ’65 AMG’ cars is already twin-turbocharged. That monster is a 3 valve per cylinder twin spark 6 litre V12, making 604 hp at 4800-5100 rpm and a massive 1,000 N·m of torque at 2000-4000 rpm! 12 cylinders and twin spark means that engine has 24 spark plugs – a huge bill when a spark plug change is due, but probably no sweat to an owner of such a car.

Facelifted Mercedes-Benz S-Class finally arrives!

It was back in April 2009 when Mercedes-Benz announced the facelifted W221 S-Class and it’s now finally here in Malaysia in less than a year. Three variants of Mercedes-Benz’s updated limo are available – the S300L, the S350L and the S500L – all in long wheelbase form and locally assembled at a plant in Pekan, Pahang.

No big changes to the world’s most successful limo, but the visual updates are significant enough to be spotted, especially at night. This is because the facelifted S-Class gets plenty of LED lights, two strips up front (one replaces the fog lamps, another is in the headlight cluster that also doubles up as indicators) and a double square arrangement for the taillights, which vaguely resembles the figure 8. The radiator grille is slightly more angular now, so are the front and rear bumpers, leading Mercedes-Benz Malaysia to call the design “edgier”. Chrome strips at the front lower lip and just above the rear number plate are subtle and tasteful.

Inside, the clamshell between the front seats that houses the phone buttons now opens to the left, allowing easier operation for the driver (it was quite illogical previously), while the steering airbag module is now smaller and covered in Nappa leather. More wood is used than before and like the exterior, chrome strips are added in places like below the arm rests. Cars that come with entertainment systems get larger rear LCD screens (8″, previously 7″) with better contrast ratio. Switchable ambient lighting comes in three hues: Solar (yellowish), Neutral (white) and Polar (bluish).

The latest S-Class comes with some new technology. Distronic Plus (Merc’s clever proximity cruise control), which works in conjunction with Pre Safe Brake, are now joined by Adaptive Highbeam Assist (auto dips the high beam in the presence of oncoming cars), Night View Assist Plus (infrared camera now with improved pedestrian detection), Attention Assist (drowsiness detection system) and Blind Spot Assist. The latter works much like Volvo’s BLIS, but the warning light is built in the mirror itself, not inside the cabin.

The gadget that will wow occupants most is Splitview, which allows the dashboard LCD screen to show different content to the driver and front passenger. For instance, the front passenger can watch a DVD while the driver uses the screen for navigation – simultaneously on the same screen. Not all of these kit are standard across the range though, especially if you order the “entry-level” S300L.

The 3.0-litre V6 (231 bhp/300 Nm), 3.5-litre V6 (272 bhp/350 Nm) and 5,461cc V8 (388 bhp/530 Nm) all maintain their outputs but are claimed to have 7% better fuel consumption. The standard transmission is Mercedes’ 7G-Tronic auto ‘box. Prices range from RM649,888 for the S300L and RM835,888 for the S350L, to exactly RM1 million for the S500L. Impressively, Mercedes-Benz Malaysia already has 60 orders in hand as of this morning.

Mercedes-Benz F800 Style concept previews new design language and green technology

We searched long and hard for a statement that could sum up the Mercedes-Benz F800 Style concept in the extremely lengthy press release before chancing upon this: “The F800 Style is both a technology platform and a showcar”. Stuttgart calls the F800 Style, which will make its world premiere in Geneva, a “research vehicle” that previews not only the design path Mercedes is heading in, but eco-friendly tech for the future.

Let’s start with the styling bit. The F800 Style wears the wide grille, big logo face of the SLS AMG, in turn inspired by the classic “Gullwing”, which is the look we can expect from future Mercs (the mysterious unnamed sculpture they showed at the Detroit show had the same nose). Design boss Gorden Wagener has confirmed this with Autocar UK, adding that the first production car to sport the new look will be the next CLS, set for launch later this year. Besides the front design, the rear horizontal light bar also pays homage to the 300SL. Wagener adds that although Mercedes uses past designs as inspiration, they will never do “retro”, “trendy” or “sacrifice design for aerodynamics”. We can also look forward to all future Mercs having LED daytime running lights, although they aren’t meant to look aggressive.

The “technology platform” bit is held up by two advanced propulsion proposals – plug-in hybrid and fuel cell. The former combines a 300 bhp V6 petrol engine with a hybrid module rated at 109 bhp. The lithium-ion batteries with a storage capacity of over 10 kWh can be recharged either at a charging station or a household power socket, and can solely power the car for up to 30 km. Claimed fuel consumption is 34.5 km/l coupled to CO2 emissions of only 68 g/km. Performance isn’t sacrificed for this – 0-96 km/h is done in 4.7 seconds while top speed is 250 km/h. In electric mode, maximum velocity is 120 km/h. This system will be launched together with the next-gen S-Class.

Next up is fuel cell tech. The fuel cell generates current by chemically reacting hydrogen with oxygen, producing water vapor as the only emission. The components of the fuel cell drive are not new; Mercedes already has them installed in the limited edition B-Class F-CELL. However, unlike the front-wheel drive B-Class, the rear driven F800 has the fuel cell located in the front, while the compact electric motor (136 bhp, 290 Nm) is installed near the rear axle. Mercedes intends to show the flexibility of its F-CELL system, which can be used for different drive configurations.

On the safety front, Distronic Plus Traffic Jam Assistant makes its debut. A development of the existing Distronic Plus, this new system allows the F800 to automatically follow the vehicle in front of it into curves. It’s capable of recognising the difference between driving along curved roads and turning, which means it does not “blindly” follow the vehicle up in front – for example, when it changes lanes in order to exit the highway. The result is that at speeds of up to about 40 km/h, Traffic Jam Assistant can steer the car by itself. If that’s too scary a prospect, drivers can override the system at any time.

Also new is PRE-SAFE 360°, which anticipates another vehicle potentially crashing into it from behind. It reacts by engaging the brakes around 600 milliseconds before a rear-end collision occurs. Mercedes says that the key advantage of this is that braking one vehicle helps prevent secondary accidents such as those that occur when the car is pushed uncontrolled into an intersection or a pedestrian crossing, for instance.

Carlsson C25 ‘Super GT’ set for Geneva debut

Carlsson calls this a ‘self-developed’ automobile, but one look and you’ll know it still has a lot of Mercedes-Benz underpinnings. It’s probably a rebodied SL, which Carlsson calls the new Carlsson C25, which will debut at Geneva 2010 this March.

The 6.0 litre twin-turbocharged V12 under the hood of the C25 makes 753 horsepower and an insane 1,150Nm of torque, which will take it from 0 to 100km/h in 3.7 seconds. And 1,150Nm is just the limited figure (likely to preserve the mechanical sanity of drivetrain components) – fully unlocked it has a 1,320Nm peak at 3,750rpm.

Seriously, even in normally aspirated form a 6.0 litre engine would be putting out something close to 600Nm which is already going to give you a huge kick in the butt when you put the pedal to the metal. It’s one of my dreams (and probably any motorheads dreams) to experience acceleration from torque in excess of 1,000Nm one day!

The C25 was designed as a ‘Super GT’. It will go into production, but only 25 units will be made. There’s actually something very interesting about how these 25 units will be distributed. Each owner is promised that he’ll be the only C25 owner in his country! Once you buy a C25 in the USA, no one else can order a C25 and register it in that country. This means it will be offered in a maximum of 25 countries.

Not sure what’s preventing some rich guy from ordering one in some weird country somewhere and importing it to his original country though. Anyone wanna bet if there’ll be one in Malaysia?
