• Peugeot 3008 launched in Malaysia – RM143,888!

READ: Peugeot 3008 Test Drive Review

The Peugeot 3008 crossover, or SUV, as Peugeot prefers to call it in Malaysia, was launched hours ago in Kuala Lumpur. With big ads all over the papers today, all that was left a secret was the price, and it has been revealed that the 3008 will cost RM143,888 on the road inclusive of insurance. Pearl white is a RM1,500 cost option. That’s lower than the previously indicated RM150K ballpark price and undercuts the Honda CR-V by about RM6,000.

That sum will buy you a long list of equipment. The 3008 is five-star Euro NCAP rated and it comes with six airbags, ESP, ABS, EBD and Brake Assist. The two star features that will wow showroom visitors are the huge panoramic glass roof and Head Up Display (HUD). There’s also Dynamic Roll Control which helps combat body roll.

Drivetrain wise, the 3008 is powered by the THP 156 engine from the Prince family of direct injection four-cylinder engines. The twin-scroll turbocharged unit pushes out 156 bhp and 240 Nm and is paired to a new six-speed automatic gearbox with Tiptronic. Power goes solely to the front wheels. Other goodies include leather, 17-inch alloys and an electronic handbrake.

We’ve already driven the 3008, and if you missed our test drive report, click here to read it and view the gallery.

  • PSA Peugeot Citroen may rebadge new Mitsubishi 1.0L to 1.3L compact car

    Mitsubishi Outlander

Apparently Mitsubishi and PSA Peugeot Citroen are working again on another project together, this time to produce compact cars with engines of between 1.0 litre to 1.3 litre capacity. An agreement is said to be announced by the end of this year.

Apparently Mitsubishi will start making this new compact car in Thailand by the end of Q1 2012, likely under Thailand’s eco car incentive program. Production will then expand to China, India and Brazil, which are widely hailed as new fast growing emerging markets that will save the bottom line for many fat auto manufacturers while they continue to trim their operations. The European markets are where PSA will come in – they will likely be sold as Peugeots and Citroens there.

    Peugeot 4007
    Peugeot’s rebadged Mitsubishi Outlander

Are we looking at a new Colt which will then be rebadged under the Peugeot and Citroen brands? The Japanese and French companies already have existing partnerships based on the Mitsubishi Outlander SUV and the Mitsubishi i MiEV electric car, both of which are rebadged and restyled into Peugeot and Citroen counterparts for the European market.

PSA’s relationship with Mitsubishi falls under the supervision of newel appointed Head of Asian Operations Gregoire Olivier. A big part of Olivier’s job will be to help the company shift the focus of its business away from Europe. He will also take care of the South East Asian market. PSA Peugeot Citroen is generally said to be over-reliant on the European market, where it sells about two thirds of its cars. Europe is already pretty much mature, however most of PSA’s products are tailored for the European market, where sales volumes aren’t expected to increase anytime soon.

    Citroen’s rebadged Mitsubishi Outlander

PSA Peugeot Citroen has to develop strong products for emerging markets in order to increase its volume and using Mitsubishi’s “Asianised” products are a good stop gap measure to get a good emerging market vehicle to sell quick without incurring high development costs of developing these products by itself. An example of a Peugeot product that it developed for the Asian market recently is the Peugeot 408, which is a lengthened sedan version of the 308 that was unveiled in China recently.

Other than the car deals with Mitsubishi, PSA also cooperates with BMW and Ford for its petrol and diesel engines respectively, and with Fiat SpA for commercial vans and Toyota for the French versions of the Toyota Aygo. Rebadging to save development costs is happening all over the world and we shouldn’t take Proton rebadging a Mitsubishi product for a Waja replacement too negatively as it will help free up development funds for other segments with higher volumes.

  • Peugeot 3008 Test Drive Review – French crossover SUV

Local Peugeot distributor Nasim Sdn Bhd is among the busiest car companies in 2010, with a few new models up their sleeves. An MPV is on its way; the RCZ should make it here by the end of this year and a “207 Sedan” codenamed T33 is scheduled for a Q3 debut. But for now, the 3008 is the latest lion badged car to hit our market, a mid-sized crossover/SUV type of vehicle pitched against the popular Honda CR-V (Peugeot prefers the SUV term for our market, as it’s more widely used).

To be launched this coming Monday (June 7), the 3008 should be able to make some CR-V prospects think twice before committing, as it gives the Honda a proper trashing on paper, both in terms of technical spec and equipment count. The actual price will be revealed at the launch, but we understand that it’s around RM150K, right smack in CR-V territory.

UPDATE: The 3008 is now officially priced at RM143,888 OTR with insurance, with an extra RM1,500 premium if you pick the Pearl White body paint.

We’ve already driven it, and our impressions are after the jump.

  • Peugeot RCZ finishes best in class at 24 Hours of Nurburgring endurance race

Peugeot’s duo of diesel RCZs which it entered in the ADAC 24 hour endurance race at the Nurburgring mid last month managed to score an impressive first and third in class standing. The two cars raced under the D1T category for diesel cars between 1.7 litre to 2.0 litre of engine capacity. The first in class car finished over 3 minutes ahead of the second best in class car. Each car is backed by four drivers and one was run by a French team and the other by a German crew.

Peugeot’s 2.0 litre HDi engine remained large unchanged with the 2,000 bar Multec common rail diesel fuel injection system and production charge air cooling systems both supplied by Delphi remaining standard. The only change was an increase in the boost pressure of the turbocharger, boosting torque from 340Nm to 400Nm and horsepower from 161hp up to a very nice 201 horsepower. The servo-solenoid injectors were also modified to have its nozzle definition better suit the increased air swirl created by the higher boost pressure.

  • Peugeot RCZ Test Drive Report from Spain

Local brand handlers Nasim has done a brilliant job at providing us with very well specced and very well priced Peugeots that don’t require car buyers to fork out extra for a European alternative, something Malaysians have been forced to accept for so long.

The 206 Bestari started the ball rolling by providing something classy in the budget segment, but it was the introduction of the 308 that propelled Peugeot into the minds and shortlists of carbuyers, and into Japanese territory.

But I am going to be honest and say that the 308 doesn’t at all move me, someone who leans more on the Continental side of the argument when it comes down to Europe vs Japan. While the 308′s sheer value can’t be ignored, it doesn’t offer much to the keen driver – while the engines are good – strong, smooth, and quite fast in the Turbo’s case – every other driving aspect isn’t. Even the 175 bhp 3-door GT doesn’t really cut it as a hot hatch.

Shoulder to shoulder in the real world (against fellow European C-segment hatchbacks, not Civics and Corollas) the Pug is no where near a Golf Mk6 in overall ability and is unenjoyable to drive next to the Focus. The deal breaker for me is that awful “Porsche” auto ‘box, not so much for its lack of ratios (only four) but for the slack and being so clueless.

Casting a wider net, there’s still nothing in Peugeot’s current range that’s desirable to this writer – could the RCZ change this skeptic?

We were privileged to sample Peugeot’s latest pride and joy at the RCZ’s international launch in northern Spain last month, and here’s the report.

  • Peugeot introduces 308 GTi with 200 THP engine

Peugeot has released information on the range topping 308 GTi, which sits above the GT in the 308 range. To earn that status, it naturally comes with more power and torque than the 175 bhp/240 Nm GT, which is sold here in Malaysia at RM160K. The GTi gets the 200 THP engine that also goes into the RCZ 2+2 Coupe. It’s a 1.6-engine with twin-scroll turbo and direct injection that makes 200 bhp and 275 Nm of torque from 1,700 to 4,500 rpm.

Like the GT, the GTi comes with a six-speed manual ‘box, enabling it to do the benchmark 0-100 km/h sprint in 7.7 seconds, which is fast, but not as fast as the similarly badged VW Golf. What’s really impressive is the fuel consumption, which is rated at 14.5 km/l in the combined cycle. The 200 THP engine is built with Sound System technology, which delivers different harmonics according to vehicle acceleration. This is from a vibrating membrane controlled and amplified by an acoustic duct – quiet when it’s supposed to be, louder when you’re pressing on.

Chassis wise, the GTi’s front suspension gets joints with larger diameter bearings derived from platform 3 (C/D segment) and specific damper settings with particular attention paid to the uprated front units (22 mm damper rods compared to 20 mm). The GTi rides on 18-inch alloys (same design as GT) with 225/40 tyres.

Only available as a five-door, the super subtle GTi is differentiated from lower powered siblings by a black carbon-style insert under the front bumper, a lower front panel derived from the 308 CC, a rear diffuser bumper with twin pipes (GT strangely had no visible tail pipes) and a slightly louder rear spoiler. And of course, GTi badging.

Inside, sporty features include an aluminium foot rest and gear knob, leather steering wheel with slightly flattened lower edge and piano black fascia. All these are present in the RCZ, as is a more modern and integrated layout for the stereo system.

  • Nasim forecasts higher sales, Peugeot 3008 launch next month, revised spec 308 VTi coming soon!

Nasim Sdn Bhd, the official distributor of Peugeot in Malaysia, has revised upwards its 2010 sales forecast by nearly 30% to 3,800 units from 2,930 units in line with increasing demand and improving market conditions. To compare, the company sold 3,766 units in 2009, but a big chunk of that was contributed by the now discontinued 206 Bestari.

For the first quarter of 2010, Nasim’s sales (excluding 206 Bestari) has nearly tripled to 715 units from 262 units recorded in the same period last year. The strong showing has been largely driven by the 308 Turbo. The bulk of 2010 sales expected to be registered in the second half of the year, when Nasim launches three new models and two facelifted variants.

For now, the new arrival is the 3008 crossover, which will be launched in early June. Not much of a surprise since it already has been spotted cruising in Putrajaya. Nasim has begun taking pre-launch bookings for the SUV.

“We will have the distinction of being the first country in ASEAN to launch the 3008 and we are very excited over its prospects. We believe it will be just as successful here as it has been in European markets,” said SM Nasarudin SM Nasimuddin, CEO of Nasim.

The other new vehicles to be launched this year include the 5008 MPV and a B-segment sedan codenamed T33, which will be assembled in Gurun, Kedah for both the domestic and regional markets. This is essentially a sedan version of the 206 with an updated outlook (to match the rest of the range) and perhaps a new cabin. Nasim is also working hard to bring in Peugeot’s latest pride – the RCZ 2+2 coupe.

One of the abovementioned facelift models is the 308 VTi, which will be introduced very soon as pre-order books are already open. New features include new alloy wheels, automatic foldable door-mirrors, roof spoiler, leather-wrapped steering wheel, multi-function display, a new front grille as well as auto air-conditioning.

  • Peugeot scores satisfying one-two finish in topsy turvy Le Mans rehearsal, Audi finished third at Spa

The 1,000 km endurance race at Spa-Francorchamps over the weekend is the most important warm up for teams preparing for Le Mans (12-13 June), with front runners Audi and Peugeot both calling the event a “full dress rehearsal”. If so, the Germans might not want to follow the script for the main showdown, as their French rivals stormed to a one-two finish at Spa.

The trio of Sébastien Bourdais, Pedro Lamy and Simon Pagenaud topped the podium ahead of teammates Franck Montagny and Stéphane Sarrazin in the sister 908 HDi FAP. Audi’s Dindo Capello, Tom Kristensen and Allan McNish was third. The No.1 Peugeot of Anthony Davidson, Marc Gene, Alex Wurz came home fourth, ahead of Timo Bernhard, Romain Dumas and Mike Rockenfeller in their Audi R15 Plus. The Spa victory capped a great run up for Team Peugeot, as it was their fourth straight one-two finish.

The weekend got off to a great start for Peugeot with Bourdais putting the No.3 908 on pole. But on race day, first corner drama saw teammate Lamy drop down to ninth. The race was then interrupted by a number of safety car interventions, and the ensuing chaos saw Audi take the lead. When the race resumed, Peugeot upped its pace and chased down the lead Audi, only for the race to be interrupted again when an electricity power-cut affected the region and forced organisers to suspend the race.

With power restored, the race got underway again and the Peugeot drivers resumed their chase. Sébastien Bourdais, then had a good fight with Capello before taking the lead on Lap 71. The ex-F1 driver then handed over to Simon Pagenaud who defended his advantage despite a rain shower an hour before the finish. He took the risk of staying out on medium-compound tyres while the Audis opted for intermediates. The gamble paid off, and the No3 car went on to win by more than a minute. Peugeot has now gone unbeaten at Spa since 2007.

Sarrazin also stayed out on slicks in the No.2 Peugeot, although he did eventually switch to softer tyres, passing the Audi just two laps from the end. The No.1 could have made it a clean sweep for Peugeot but for an off track excursion by Marc Gené 30 minutes from the end of the race.

  • Creative Facebook campaign for the Peugeot RCZ – “come and advertise yourself to me!”

Here’s a cool marketing approach by Peugeot UK for the RCZ 2+2 Coupe, which will be launched in Britain this month. Titled “It Chooses You”, the online campaign gives people an opportunity to win the car. Nothing unusual there. But instead of advertising to you, people have to advertise themsleves to the RCZ, for it to pick him/her as an owner. This line says it all: “The RCZ is this year’s ultra desirable sports coupe. As such, it doesn’t need to advertise to you – you advertise to it.” Don’t you just love the attitude? ;)

The competition on Facebook will contain ads that look like typical classified car ads but feature real people advertising themselves to the RCZ. Alongside the RCZ’s FB page, there’s a micro-site (www.itchoosesyou.co.uk) where entrants can get their creative juices flowing and create ads with the help of Facebook Connect. The RCZ will choose its partner on 11th June, and 150 pairs of tickets to the Goodwood Moving Motor Show will also be up for grabs. Entrants may even find fame as the best entries will be featured in an online ad campaign for Peugeot UK.

While we seldom get such interactive car campaigns here in Malaysia, we are getting the RCZ, which should arrive in Malaysia later this year. We’ve driven it already, so watch out for the review that’s coming your way soon!
