Peugeot roars – top-selling European brand locally in Q1

Peugeot has achieved a defining moment in its local history by claiming the top spot in first quarter sales among the European makes in the country. In the period ending March 31, Nasim sold 1,538 Pugs, which made for a whopping 167% jump from the 576 units sold in the same timeframe last year.

Those Q1 numbers were enough to give ze French lion a leading market share of 26% among the European brands in the market, according to the latest figures released by the Malaysian Automotive Association (MAA).

It’s a milestone for the marque in Malaysia, said SM Nasarudin SM Nasimuddin, Nasim’s CEO, who added that the volume recorded by the company in Q1 keeps it well in line with it achieving its annual sales target of 7,000 units. The company is set to launch two more models this year, which will obviously help push things along nicely.

Specifics then. The most popular Pug in the first three months of the year was the 308, with 588 units sold (compared to 458 in the same period in 2010). amounting to 38% of total sales. Meanwhile, the 207 sedan sold 537 units, accounting for 35% of sales, with another 15% provided by the 3008, with 237 units.

The company is optimistic about the future, says its chief operating officer Datuk Samson Anand George, who adds that the remainder of 2011 will see further expansion of the brand’s presence – Nasim is set to introduce five new sales and service outlets to bring its network size to 23 nationwide.

Peugeot SXC Concept: New look applied on a crossover

It’s an indication of China’s prominence that so many carmakers are lining up to set up world debuts in Shanghai. Peugeot is one of them, and the French marque that’s targeting 200,000 sales this year plans to launch at least one new model per year in the world’s largest auto market. At this year’s Auto Shanghai, they will launch the 508 saloon for China and also show off this sleek looking crossover concept called SXC.

Done by Peugeot Style Studios of the China Tech Center in Shanghai, the SXC (which stands for Shanghai Cross Concept) takes Peugeot’s new look first seen on the SR1 and applies it to a crossover body. According to the design team, SXC adopts certain characteristics from the world of the SUV (such as strength, high driving position, protection), without caricaturing them. It’s modern, elegant and refined and “close to the upmarket world of the saloons”.

At 4.87 m long and 2.035 m wide, the SXC is quite a large vehicle, mirroring the size of an Infiniti FX. Main styling points to look out for are the “floating grille”, “feline headlamps”, boomerang rear lamps, reverse-hinged doors, two-part panoramic roof and the use of brushed aluminium on the exterior.

Power is courtesy of Peugeot’s HYbrid4 technology. which sees a 218 hp 1.6-litre THP engine driving the front wheels and a 70 kW (95 hp) electric motor driving the rears. Combined fuel consumption is rated at 5.8 L/100 km and CO2 emissions is at 143 g/km. The drivetrain has a “zero emissions” mode powered solely by the electric motor at low speeds.

Peugeot 3008 HYbrid4 may come to Malaysia this year – 408 sedan set for market launch in April 2012

Here’s some welcome news for diesel hybrid fans – Nasim is exploring the possibility of bringing in the Peugeot 3008 HYbrid4 to Malaysia this year. The car was launched at the Paris Motor Show last October.

Automobiles Peugeot is currently conducting extensive tests in France on the 3008 HYbrid4 with Euro 2M specification diesel that’s available in Malaysia, according to Nasim’s CEO SM Nasarudin SM Nasimuddin.

“So far the tests have yielded positive results, but there are still more tests to be done. Once we can conclude that the 3008 HYbrid4 will have no problems running on Euro 2M specification diesel, we will look into launching it in Malaysia,” he said.

The 3008 HYbrid4 features a 2.0 litre diesel engine producing 163 hp and an electric motor that offers 37 hp for a combined total output of 200 hp, with a maximum torque of 500 Nm (300 Nm from the diesel block and 200 Nm from the rear electric motor).

Minister of International Trade and Industry Datuk Mustapa Mohamed tested the 3008 HYbrid4 during his visit to PSA Peugeot-Citroen’s headquarters in Paris last week. Mustapa, who was leading a Malaysian trade and investment mission in Paris, also met Philippe Varin, chairman of the managing board of PSA Peugeot Citroen, who briefed the former on the carmaker’s plans for the Asean region by using Malaysia as a production hub.

In related news, the Peugeot 408 C-segment sedan is set to be launched in Malaysia in April next year; codenenamed T73, the car is based on the 308 hatchback and the “408″ name isn’t confirmed for our market.

Production is slated to begin at the end of 2011 in Gurun at Naza’s manufacturing plant, with a target of 60,000 units to be built over the next five years, for both domestic and Asean markets.

Nasim starts initiative to get closer to Peugeot owners

Local Pug boys Nasim have begun a new after-sales initiative aimed at providing its customers with in-depth understanding of their vehicles as well as the essential maintenance tips for their Peugeots.

Kicking of this initiative was the Discover Peugeot 3008 seminar, which was held last weekend at the Grand Dorsett Hotel in Subang Jaya for 50 owners of the Peugeot 3008. The two-hour long seminar included an in-depth presentation on the various features of the 3008 as well as practical sessions on 14-point checks and basic maintenance tips.

“This is a new initiative that’s being undertaken by Nasim to further grow the Peugeot brand. In the coming months, we will have seminars on the other models in our line-up such as the 207, 308 and the 5008. It’s essential that our customers get the very best out of their vehicles. At the same time, this is an opportunity for us to get to know our customers better,” Nasim’s COO Datuk Samson Anand George said.

Nasim had sent out invitations for the free seminar to all 3008 owners in the country and the first 50 to RSVP were given seats for the seminar; they were also invited to bring along a guest.

During the presentation segment of the seminar, owners were given an in-depth explanation to the various safety technologies featured in the 3008 such as ABS, ESP, deadlocking, airbag deployment, dynamic roll control as well as the various impact zones in the SUV that are designed to minimise injury to the driver and passengers.

In the practical session, the owners were shown the proper methods in changing a tyre, jump-starting a flat battery, deadlocking, reprogramming their keys, checking engine oil, power steering fluid and coolant levels as well as releasing the electronic parking brake on a flat battery.

Since its launch in June 2010, Nasim has sold some 500 units of the 3008, while 250 units are on the way to be delivered to new customers.

Buy a Peugeot 308, 207 or 407, and get rewarded

If you’ve been thinking of bagging a Pug, it sounds like a good time to do so. The boys at Nasim have come up with some neat offers and rewards on the Peugeot 207 sedan, 308 Turbo and the 407. From now to the end of April, the three lions – which are infinitely more entertaining performers than their human counterparts – come bundled with some neat deals.

For the 207, purchase one from March 1 to April 30 and you’ll receive a three-year or 60,000 km free-servicing package (whichever comes first). This servicing package for the 207 sedan is applicable during scheduled servicing intervals (at every 10,000 km) and consists of free parts – set to be replaced at the intervals – and labour.

Customers who purchase the 308 Turbo from now to March 25 will get something different, in this case four tickets worth nearly RM800 to the Disney on Ice Worlds of Fantasy show on April 2 (at either 4.30 pm or 8.30 pm) at Stadium Putra, Bukit Jalil, while stocks last, naturally.

Meanwhile, customers opting for the 407 can either opt for instalment payments of RM1,260 per month or a low interest rate of 1.33%. Terms and conditions naturally apply for the offer, which runs till April 30.

Nasim to up exports of 207 to Thailand, Indonesia is next

Nasim Sdn Bhd, the official Peugeot distributor in Malaysia, will be increasing exports of its 207 to Thailand. Nasim began exporting the 207 to Thailand in November last year with an initial batch of 44 units, and this latest order is understood to be much bigger than the previous shipment. The next destination for the B-segment sedan is Indonesia in March.

SM Nasarudin SM Nasimuddin, CEO of Nasim announced this during the visit of Marc Barety, France’s Ambassador to Malaysia, to the Naza Automotive Manufacturing plant in Gurun, Kedah. Barety was accompanied by members of the French Embassy and the Malaysian French Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

“Besides Thailand and Indonesia, we will soon begin exporting the 207 to other markets in the region such as Brunei and Sri Lanka as well as right-hand drive markets in Africa. This in turn will further establish Malaysia as Peugeot’s hub for the region,” said SM Nasarudin. He also revealed that Nasim sold a total of 306 units of the 207 sedan locally in January.

Naza’s Gurun plant is preparing to roll out a C-segment sedan codenamed T73. The plan is to make 60,000 units of the T73 over a five-year period from 2012 to 2016, with some 60% set aside for export to right hand drive markets.

Peugeot 308 updated with new grille and LED DRL

Peugeot has given the C-segment Peugeot 308 a makeover featuring a significantly revamped front end that showcases a new ‘floating’ style for the front grille as well as boomerang-shaped LED daytime running lights to complement the foglamps.

This new look will premiere in the metal at the Geneva Motor Show and will go on sale from April 2011 internationally – who knows, Nasim may already be preparing for this facelift’s Malaysian introduction.

Something new for the 308 is the addition of an auto start-stop system for the 1.6 litre HDi Euro 5 turobodiesel engine. This promises a 15% reduction in diesel consumption for urban traffic, 40% faster restarting in 400 milliseconds, as well as engine shut off capability from 20km/h for the manual gearbox. This means that the turbodiesel engine can shut off when you are coasting to a stop when your speed reduces to 20km/h, instead of waiting for a complete stop. The alternator-start is designed for up to 600,000 restarts in its lifespan.

The diesel isn’t available in Malaysia though, and while we are waiting for Euro 4 which still looks like it’s sometime away, this Pug uses Euro 5 diesels.

2011 Peugeot 908 racecar – now with 3.7L V8 diesel

Peugeot Sport have revealed their new 2011 Le Mans contender – the new Peugeot 908 HDi FAP which now comes with a turbocharged 3.7 litre V8 diesel engine as opposed to the previous generation racecar’s 5.5 litre V12 diesel. The car was known as the 90X during development and Peugeot decided to continue with the 908 name to continue building on the previous generation racecar’s wave of success.

Even though the new engine has 4 less cylinders in its V-banks, power output is still considerable – 550 horses, even though significantly less than the V12′s output of over 730 horses. The V angle of the new engine is also 90 degrees while the V12 was a 100 degree engine.

Peugeot has decided to stick with pure diesel combustion engine power with the new engine as opposed to any hybrid/KERS trickery. This will make it the 5th consecutive years Peugeot has competed in endurance racing with a FAP filter equipped diesel engine.

Look after the jump for a full gallery of the new 908 racer.
