Peugeot 207 launched – CKD, 1.6L, estimated RM72,888

UPDATE: The RM72,888 OTR with insurance price quoted here is an estimate pending approval. We will update you on the confirmed pricing when it’s out.

We’re reporting live from Putrajaya, where ex-PM Tun Dr Mahathir has just unwrapped the Peugeot 207 moments ago. Officially, they’re calling the car just 207 without the ‘Sedan’ in the name, although this isn’t the same car as the B-segment 207 supermini sold in Europe, but a booted version of the 206 with the marque’s family feline face. Assembled at Naza’s Gurun plant, the 207 is estimated to be priced at RM72,888 OTR including insurance.

Powered by a DOHC 16-valve 1.6-litre engine with 110 bhp and 147 Nm of torque produced from 4,000 rpm, the 207 uses a 4-speed automatic gearbox with Tiptronic. This isn’t the 1.6-litre Prince engine in found in the 308, but the figures are a big upgrade from the 206 Bestari’s 75 bhp/120 Nm. An approximate top speed of 180 km/h is possible, according to the official brochure. Claimed fuel consumption is 6.1 litres per 100 km.

Size wise, the 207 measures 4,235 mm long, 1,699 mm wide and 1,447 mm tall. To give you an idea on where these figures stand, a Toyota Vios is 65 mm longer than the Peugeot, equally as wide at 1.7 metres but sits 13 mm lower. The 207′s 2,443 mm wheelbase is unchanged from the 206 hatchback and is shorter than the Vios’. That big boot holds up to 420 litres of cargo and the rear seats split fold 60:40.

The suspension consists of MacPherson struts up front and a torsion beam at the rear, while the brakes are ventilated discs in front coupled with rear drums. ABS, EBD and Emergency Brake Assist are standard along with dual front airbags (passenger’s airbag can be deactivated). Those with young children will be happy to find two ISOFIX points in the rear seats. The wheels are 15-inch items wrapped with 185/60 Kumho tyres.

Equipment wise, this entry level Peugeot comes with things like automatic air con, auto headlights and wipers, MP3 stereo with Bluetooth, USB and AUX input, trip computer, leather steering and an “instrument panel made by luxury watchmaker Jaeger”. That’s quite a lot of kit for the price.

True to Peugeot’s promise of making Malaysia its regional right-hand drive manufacturing hub, the 207 will be exported to Thailand, Indonesia, Brunei and Sri Lanka. Domestically, Nasim aims to sell 5,000 to 6,000 units of the 207 next year.

We’ve driven the 207 already! Read the review and view the gallery here. Live gallery after the jump.

Peugeot 207 Sedan – our first impressions of the T33

pug 207 1

The RM75-85,000 car segment has certainly become that much more exciting in recent months. After years of what has really been a two-horse race, the slew of new contenders that have emerged or are coming about in this bustling segment is nothing short of excellent news to the consumer, who by the next few weeks or so will have a couple more choices to pick from.

That B-segment domain that has been owned by Toyota’s Vios and Honda’s City has since seen the inclusion of the larger C-segment Kia Forte into the mix, and then Mazda came along with its Mazda2 sometime back. This month or so is where it all gets truly interesting – first, there was the arrival of the Thai-made Ford Fiesta, and early next month will see two more joining the fray, one being another C-segment offering, the Inspira (granted, it, like the Forte, shouldn’t exactly be in the segment, but with pricing considerably dictating purchase decisions here, like it or not, the Proton is effectively lumped in, albeit primarily in manual form).

The other, which arrives a bit earlier sometime next week, is the Peugeot 207 Sedan. Codenamed the T33 Project, the vehicle is essentially an updated 206 Sedan based on the 206 chassis, built in Gurun for the local market as well as the Asean region. Ahead of its market launch, we were invited to have a quick preview session with the car earlier in the week.

Peugeot RCZ and 308CC spotted in JPJ Putrajaya!

It’s an onslaught of Pugs! These two new Peugeots were spotted by reader Akmal in Putrajaya – a sexy silver Peugeot RCZ and a white Peugeot 308CC. If they’re already hanging around JPJ Putrajaya presumably for type approval it’s likely that they’ll be launched sometime in the first half of next year.

Next up – we pretty much already know that the 5008 MPV will be here as well. I can think of two other models that have the potential for sales over here – the 408 which is basically a C-segment 308-based sedan and the 508, Peugeot’s version of the Citroen C5.

Considering the insanely expensive price of the Audi TT here in Malaysia, I am curious how much that RCZ will go for. We’ve already driven the Peugeot RCZ – read our test drive review.

VIDEO: Peugeot 207 Sedan “Extreme Test”

We found this cool video on Nasim’s peugeotmalaysia Youtube page featuring YS Khong and his son Ian “warming up” the Peugeot 207 before its Malaysian market introduction. The father and son duo show it’s perfectly possible for a front wheel drive sedan to slide around corners in the video! Enjoy the video embedded above! If you have the spare bandwidth, remember to select the 1080P resolution for the best full screen viewing.

Nasim donates RM200,000 to Hospis Malaysia

Nasim hospis

It’s nice to see car companies giving back something to the community. While you might say that RM200,000 isn’t that huge a sum in the grand scheme of things, it’s nothing to sneeze at, really, and every bit does count for those who need it.

That’s the sum local Peugeot boys Nasim raised recently for Hospis Malaysia following a corporate social responsibility (CSR) exercise that the company launched in July. The funds were raised from the sale of Peugeot cars and spare parts during the duration of the company’s Peugeot 200 Year Anniversary promotional campaign.

“As a responsible corporate citizen, we are proud to announce this donation to Hospis Malaysia. We hope this contribution will help the organisation continue its great work in caring for patients with terminal illnesses,” said SM Nasarudin SM Nasimuddin, CEO of Nasim and joint group executive chairman of the Naza Group of Companies.

He presented the donation to Hospis Malaysia last week following the launch of the new Nasim Puchong 2S centre. Hospis Malaysia, in case you don’t already know, is a charitable organisation that offers palliative care to patients suffering from life-limiting illnesses such as cancer and AIDS in the Klang Valley.

From a hospice with 44 patients under its care 18 years ago, Hospis Malaysia now receives a yearly referral of approximately 1,500 patients a year. It provides both home-care and day-care services to its patients.

“We are extremely grateful to Nasim for this generous donation, which will go a long way in helping us sustain our activities in providing care for the terminally ill. The services we provide are free of charge and we depend on donations from companies and private individuals to carry out our operations,” said Datuk Richard Robless, council member of Hospis Malaysia.

Nasim launches Peugeot 2S centre in Puchong

nasim service

Nasim today opened its latest Peugeot 2S (service and spare parts) centre in Puchong, the first of five outlets it plans to open over the next six months as part of a RM25 million network expansion exercise. The other four, all 3S centres, will be located in Kota Kinabalu, Kota Bahru, Melaka and Seremban. When these are finally launched, Nasim will have a total of 24 sales and 21 service outlets in the country.

The new Puchong 2S centre should be welcome news for Pug owners in the area as well as nearby locations – prior to its opening, the service centre nearest to them was the one in Glenmarie. Facilities offered in the outlet, apart from basic servicing needs, include wheel alignment and balancing, body and paint services including insurance claims, windscreen replacement and vehicle inspection service.

The centre currently has four service bays and a capability of handling up to 15 vehicles a day, and is equipped with two units of the Peugeot Planet System Diagnostics tool, which enables the service personnel at the centre to perform full static and dynamic diagnostics on the vehicle’s management system, as well as allow software updates on vehicles to be made.

Nasim’s chief operating officer Samson Anand George said the new outlets were necessary to accommodate an increase in sales for next year. “We are targeting to sell between 7,000 and 8,000 units next year, which will be double of what we have sold this year. The bulk of the sales will come from the new 207 sedan, which will be launched in November, as well as other popular models such as the 308 and the 3008,” he said.

BMW and PSA Peugeot Citroën to expand cooperation by jointly developing hybrid systems

BMW PSA logo

Having enjoyed a fruitful cooperation on engines thus far, BMW and PSA Peugeot Citroën is set to expand on the level of colloboration, with the joint development of hybrid components for front-wheel drive vehicles next on the cards.

The components will be used in front-wheel-drive vehicles with electrified drive trains. BMW and PSA state that joint development and component production, as well as shared purchasing, will allow not just standardisation of key elements for electric vehicles, but mean lower costs for both partners in the long run.

Earlier in the year, both companies agreed to develop the next generation of their jointly designed Prince four-cylinder petrol engine, which will meet EU 6 requirements.

Peugeot introduces THP 200 engine in 308 CC

308 cc

Peugeot has introduced a range topping variant to its 308 CC range, with the 1.6 litre THP 200 engine joining the fold. The 200 hp engine, already seen in the RCZ and 308 GTi, isn’t the only thing that’s new to the 308 CC THP 200, of course.

New to the car is a front suspension incorporating joints with larger diameter bearings derived from the company’s larger C/D-segment platform 3, as seen on the 308 GTi, as well as 18-inch Lincancabur alloy wheels clad with 225/40 R18 tyres as standard.

Bagging the THP 200 also gets you the attendant Sound System technology, where different engine harmonics are delivered according to vehicle acceleration, through the use of a vibrating membrane with an inbuilt time delay.

On sale from this month in France, the car will feature a unique Féline trim level, as befits its range-topping status, though an optional special Black/Vintage two-tone leather trim is also available.

Actually, this sort of jogs the memory a bit – the 308 CC is supposed to be one of the five models launched this year by Nasim locally. Now, when’s it arriving then?

Paris 2010: Peugeot HR1 Concept – Little urban crossover

If you have no idea what this is, don’t worry because its creators aren’t too sure either! Peugeot describes its HR1 Concept as a car that has genes from the city car, coupé and SUV. In combining all of the above, the HR1 “is creating its own identity and new and original benefits”.

It is compact at just 3.67m long, and has two electric “scissor” doors for easy access in tight areas such as in a small garage or parking in a narrow lane, for instance. The high riding HR1 has its wheels at the edges, good ground clearance and comes with SUV levels of visibility and manoeuvrability. In two-seat form, the HR1 has a massive load area of 734 litres, but put up the “stowaway seats” and it can carry up to four occupants plus 180 litres of cargo.

This urban concept sports Peugeot’s new design language seen on the SR1 and raised sections above the rear windscreen that recalls the double bubble roof design of the RCZ. Autocar UK says that the face you see here will be used for the next generation 208 supermini due in 2012.

The concept is powered by Peugeot’s HYbrid 4 system as per the 3008 you read about earlier (37 bhp/200 Nm electric motor driving the rear wheels), but here it’s paired to a new three-cylinder 1.2-litre THP petrol engine with 110 bhp and 195 Nm. Claimed fuel economy is 28.7 km/l.

Paris 2010: Peugeot 3008 HYbrid 4, world’s first diesel hybrid

The 2010 Paris Motor Show is still open for the public as we type, and this website will continue to “bring to you the show floor” by reporting on the many new cars and concepts that made their debut at the Paris Expo – while Lotus stole the show with their five car blast, there are plenty more to excite the car nut.

Touted as the world’s first production diesel full hybrid vehicle, the 3008 HYbrid 4 was one of the stars of the vast Peugeot stand. The logic is simple: modern diesels are more economical (by up to 30%, Peugeot says) and powerful than their petrol equivalents, so a diesel hybrid should outperform a petrol one. With an electric motor helping out, the HYbrid 4 offers performance of a much larger diesel car, but with low CO2 emissions, which is crucial in Europe.

Here, a 2.0-litre 163 bhp HDi oil burner (with Stop Start) works together with a 37 bhp electric motor – the former powers the front wheels while the latter powers the rears. Max combined torque is 500 Nm, 40% of that contributed by the electric motor.

There are no mechanical links between both powerplants – it’s all “by wire”. All the hybrid components including the Nickel Metal Hydride battery are located in the rear; Peugeot says there were no need for any redesign from the standard 3008, and weight distribution has improved with the added load in the rear.

No CVT here, as the 3008 HYbrid 4 uses an electronically-controlled 6-speed manual gearbox, which we presume works like an AMT. There are four drive modes: ZEV (Zero Emission Vehicle), Four-wheel drive, Auto and Sport. The headline figures are 26.3 km/l combined consumption and low CO2 emissions of 99 g/km.

The 3008 HYbrid 4 will go on sale early next year in Europe. Gallery after the jump.
