Peugeot HR1 – a new concept for the SUV category

Just as the SR1 was Peugeot’s concept that showcased the design of its future sedan or coupe models, the HR1 is the SUV/Crossover equivalent. Based on various body designs, the HR1 is created to appeal to young city dwellers, individuals and couples.

The HR1 is motivated by Peugeot’s Hybrid4 technology, which sees the use of a turbocharged three cylinder 110hp 1.2 litre engine that drives the front wheels, along with a 37hp electric motor, driving the rear. This gives a combined power out put of 147hp and a respectable 2.9/100km fuel consumption figure.

You can also expect to see the French company downsizing their engines to this three-cylinder engine in the future, in line with their environmental strategy. This model in particular gives a CO2 figure of just 80g/km.

Power is transferred to its four wheels via an electronically controlled 6-speed manual gearbox that has a full automatic or sequential option.

Design wise you can see a lot of the SR1 in the concept, especially in the headlights and single floating front grille. The HR1 gets full LED rear lights as does most new Peugeot models today. What will stand out is its electric scissor doors, which is said to come in useful in tight parking spaces, while roof design seems to have been inspired by the RCZ Coupe, with its double bubble shape.

Inside, apart from the slightly higher driving position, the interior gets Heads-up display and an intuitive “man-machine interface” in the form of a movement recognition system, that controls audio, satellite navigation and air conditioning systems.

Peugeot go on to say that in terms of space, the car has been designed primarily for young city dwellers without children. Thus you can keep all sorts in the back, which has a load space of 734 litre, apart from children.

Enjoy more of the concept after the jump.

Peugeot 207 teaser reveals first details of Malaysian specs

Nasim has put up some initial details on the upcoming Peugeot 207 Sedan on their website. The following are the initial list of specifications that we know for now:

  • 16 valve DOHC engine – no mention of engine displacement though. I’m assuming it’s going to be a normally aspirated 1.6L motor, but highly unlikely to be a Prince.
  • Adaptive automatic transmission with Tiptronic and Sports mode – this is most probably a new and improved version of their 4-speed automatic.
  • Sensor activated headlamps and wipers – this is probably best in class for a B-segment sedan of under RM100k.
  • Leather-wrapped steering wheel
  • ABS brakes with EBD and EBA
  • ISOFIX point for child seat
  • CD player with MP3/WMA/USB/Bluetooth support
  • 6 speaker sound system
  • Dual SRS airbags for the front occupants
  • 15 inch allo wheels with 10 spoke Interlagos design
  • 420 litre boot space
  • Engine immobiliser
  • 3 year or 100,000km warranty

How much would you pay for a CKD Peugeot 207 Sedan with a normally aspirated 1.6 litre engine and these specs?

Peugeot 207 Sedan to be launched in November 2010

According to a report by Bernama, Nasim COO Mr Samson Anand George revealed to a group of media visiting Naza’s Gurun assembly plant up north that the Peugeot 207 Sedan that we’ve spied prowling the streets of the Klang Valley while sporting minimal disguise will be launched November this year.

“I can assure you that the pricing will be very competitive. We aim to sell 5k to 6k units of the Peugeot 207 Sedan a year, with 30% of total sales being exports to neighboring countries like Thailand, Indonesia, Singapore and Brunei,” said Mr Samson Anand George.

The 207 Sedan will be the little brother of the 408 Sedan, due in 2012

Nasim is currently working on three additional 3S centers at a total cost of RM15 million. The 207 Sedan will be the latest model to join the current stable of CKD and CBU models such as the 407, the 308 and the 3008.

From what we understand there are also plans to bring in the Peugeot 5008 7-seater MPV sometime next year, in addition to two other ‘lifestyle-oriented’ cars, which I am taking a wild guess to be the drop top Peugeot 308CC and the sexy Peugeot RCZ. They are also on track to launching a locally assembled ‘Peugeot T73′ C-segment sedan in 2012, which should very likely be the Peugeot 408.

340hp Peugeot Concept EX1 to make debut in Paris

Peugeot has unveiled a new concept car called the EX1, which will have a full reveal at the Paris Motor Show later this month. They probably wouldn’t admit it, but it looks like inspiration for this concept was drawn from the recent Batman films. Instead, the French automaker have stuck to the story that they were creating an “extreme dream car” with “exciting possibilities for electric power”.

Demonstrating this, the EX1 uses two electric motors connected mounted on each axle that collectively generate 340HP and 240Nm of constant torque. This makes it an all wheel drive vehicle. Peugeot went on to say that the EX1 is “capable of lightning acceleration” which “exceeds 1G of gravitational force.”

The electric four-wheeled tric uses the company’s new design language first seen on the SR1 concept car and the new 508. Optimal weight distribution was key as the size of the passenger compartment was reduced.

The concept which measures 1.77m wide and 0.90m high also employs a monocouque body structure manufactured from a carbon/honeycomb composite, for rigidity. The front uses a drop link double wishbone suspension while the rear comprises of a single swinging arm linked to centrally-mounted shock absorber.

Peugeot 3008 HYbrid4 makes it to production for Paris!

You’ve probably though that with all the hype diesel engines are getting, wouldn’t a diesel hybrid be the ultimate fuel-efficient vehicle? Peugeot seemed to have thought the exact same thing. First in concept form as the Prologue HYmotion4, and now finally in production.

The 3008 Hybrid4 has a combined power output of 200hp and an amazing 500Nm of torque. Power sources are a 163hp, 2.0 litre HDi FAP diesel engine powering the front wheels, while a 37hp electric motor drives the rear axle. This makes it a four wheel drive vehicle. Performance is decen, with a 0-100 figure in 8.8 seconds and a top speed of 209km/h.

Adding to its fuel efficiency technology is the second generation Stop and Start system connected to the electronically controlled manual six-speed sequential gearbox. A 7 inch LCD screen displays the operating status of the hybrid powertrain in real time.

Along with that, an energy recovery system harnesses the kinetic energy that is created through slowing down and sends it to the Ni-MH (Nickel Metal Hydride) battery. This is stored under the boot floor next to the electric motor. Conversion to a diesel-electric hybrid has added almost 120kg to the 3008.

Getting the best from the crossover will be the use of 4 driving modes. The ZEV (Zero Emission Vehicle) mode runs on pure electricity, suitable for things like getting out of a car park, while the 4WD mode uses both engines to operate together as far as possible. The Auto mode is optimized to make the best switch between the diesel and electric engine to maximize economy. Sport mode on the other hand, gives you all 200 horses from both engines with quicker gear changes at higher speeds.

The exterior will feature LED daytime running light bars, a SUV-like large front grille, chrome accents, and 17 inch Oltis alloy wheels along with the black and chrome protective trims on the lower sections. This is also the first 3008 to receive the company’s new badge.

The interior is pretty much standard 3008 fare with a few differences such as the Hybrid4 emblem on the gear lever and the the 7 inch colour display.

The company’s Multiflex interior provides room for the batteries and also offers a load capacity of 420 litres with 66 litres under the boot floor. This can be extended to 1501 litres with the second row seats folded up.

Thanks to the hybrid powertrain, the Peugeot 3008 Hybrid4 only sips 3.8 litres of fuel for every 100km traveled, and has a CO2 emission figure of just 99g/km. Peugeot plan to stick this powertrain in other models and the closest would be the 508 models out next year. European sales of the car will start in the second quarter of next year.

Look after the jump for high resolution pictures of the 3008 Hybrid4.

Peugeot 207 Sedan (Project T33) spotted in Rawang!

Two units of Naza’s T33 Project have been spotted on the road by our own Danny Tan in Rawang! These two red cars are the latest locally assembled Peugeot cars soon to be offered in Malaysia, perhaps by the end of the year?

These shots are actually quite revealing. There are some minor tape on the car but the headlamps and tail lamps are quite clearly visible. Of course we can’t say for 100% sure if any of what we see here will make it to the final product or not.

The T33 Project is basically the Peugeot 207 Sedan, which will be built in Gurun for the local market as well as the ASEAN region. There has already been news in the Indonesian media that they will also be getting the 207 Sedan, imported from Malaysia in early 2011, so export plans are firmly in place. 18,000 of 207 Sedans are planned to be rolled out of Naza’s Gurun plant annually.

It will be offered with a 1.6 litre engine, which is a welcome upgrade from the 1.4 litre found in the Naza 206.

Look after the jump for the rest of the snapshots.

Peugeot Automotive Design Network – The Lion’s Den

Back in April, we were privileged to be part of the international press launch of the Peugeot RCZ, which is not only great to look at, but very nice to drive as well (click here to read the report). The event took us to the Basque country in northern Spain, but local Peugeot distributor Nasim Sdn Bhd made extra effort to organise a visit to PSA Peugeot Citroën’s Automotive Design Network (ADN) located in Velizy, a small suburb just outside Paris.

ADN was opened back in 2004 at a cost of 130 million euros to PSA Peugeot Citroën, and while both French brands share this facility, their respective design studios are separate, an arrangement described as “a solution that promotes healthy competition”. Housing about 900 employees from more than 20 countries, this 70,000 square metre 3-storey building acts as a “genetic nursery” for Peugeot. I suppose you could say that the new Peugeot design language found on the 508 was born here.

ADN is entirely dedicated to automobile design, including conducting, applying and enhancing the engineering and design studies that precede and support the creation process. It is equipped with resources for R&D, creation (styling studios), as well as for producing prototypes (milling machines, paint and assembly workshops). Models from 1:1 scale units, see through models to fully working concept cars are made here.

Security was very tight (two huge guys who look like club bouncers accompanied us the whole time) and our cameras weren’t allowed in so unfortunately we can’t show you what we saw. Passing through a labyrinth of corridors and stairs, we arrived at the Virtual Reality Center, where we were allowed to experiment with 3D simulation tools such as the Holobench, Scale 1 screen and the Cave system. It was like being in the Motion Master but with the ability to touch and effect the elements.

We were also brought to a huge dome-roofed arena with the Peugeot 408 parked in the middle. Here, the car’s chief designer Ivo Groen walked us through the 308-based sedan’s design, aided by remote controlled lighting from direct, overhead daylight to artificial light. Apparently, the unit we saw and sat in was the first full working model that was shown to Peugeot bosses.

The lively Groen, who owns an Alfa Romeo GTV6 and a 1971 Lamborghini Espada among other cars, explained that the choice of a more subtle face over the “wide mouthed” look familiar to us was intentional, as the sedan is meant to be less aggressive and controversial. The strips of chrome around the car are to evoke elegance. In the metal, the 408′s proportions are tidy for a “converted” sedan, and the very simple rear end reminded me of the 406.

Earlier this month, Peugeot and Naza penned a deal for the latter to assemble a three-box C-segment car, which most likely is the 408, although the “408″ name is for the Chinese market and isn’t confirmed for ours. Assembly of this model, codenamed T73, will begin in the second quarter of 2011.

Peugeot 508 info released – hybrid model has 200hp, AWD

After the image leak of its new 508 sedan that we carried earlier, Peugeot has officially released pictures and some details on its D-segment contender. It will get a debut at the Paris Motor Show in October and will go on sale in Europe at the beginning of 2011. Next year will also see production start in China to serve what is now the world’s biggest auto market.

The 508 will be available in two body styles – saloon and wagon/estate. Based on PSA’s Platform 3, the 508, which will replace the 407 and 607, will be 4.79m long whereas the wagon is longer at 4.81m. The 407 is 4.69m long, so there’s a substantial increase in footprint here. Cabin and boot volume is up on the 407, although it’s not revealed by how much. For comparison, the big sized Honda Accord we have here is 4.95m long.

We see the 508′s cabin for the first time here, and Peugeot says that it combines hi-tech with high quality materials. The French brand aimed for “indisputable perceived quality” for the interior, both visually and to the touch.

The 508 range will include a hybrid with HYbrid4 technology. It’s capable of 200 hp and has an all-wheel drive setup. On electric-petrol mode, the 508 hybrid produces 99 g/km of CO2, which is unheard of in a big car like this. Standard engines are all “well positioned in their categories in terms of performance and driveability, fuel consumption and CO2 emissions”. The 508 will feature Peugeot’s e-HDi stop and start system, the first of a new generation of stop start systems which offers improved driveability and 15% better economy.

Pictures are after the jump.
