Porsche 911 GT3 R replaces the GT3 Cup S

The Porsche 911 GT3 Cup S has been replaced by this new model – the Porsche 911 GT3 R, adding yet another variant to the neverending list of different 911 GT3 models. No matter what kind of 911-beating laptimes Nissan posts with its GT-R, the choice of plenty of small racing teams most of the time is the 911 GT3.

The GT3 R’s 6 cylinder boxer engine has a displacement of 4.0 liters, up from the 3.8 liters you get with the road cars or the Cup model. This same engine size is also found in the 2009 GT3 RSR. The 0.2 liters of extra displacement has been achieved by increasing the cylinder stroke to 80.4mm instead of 76.4mm.

The engine is mated to a 6-speed sequential dog-teeth gearbox. Dog-boxes use gears that are straight-cut instead of the helical-cut gears that we have in our normal road car manual transmissions. Because of the different way the gears engage, a dog-teeth gearbox is much more noisy (that whirring sound that we get when we travel in reverse gear – they have it all the time!), and they also don’t have synchro rings so you basically just slam it with greater force into engagement instead of having to clutch at changes. A dog box has less transmission losses compared to a helical gearbox and is more durable.

Porsche’s focus with this new model is better drivability and easier handling. The GT3 and its race-going variants have always been hardcore cars but this car has ABS, traction control and a throttle blip function built into its e-gas throttle body. These features make it more suitable for an ambitious amateur racer (with deep pockets – the car is 279,000 Euros) to drive the car.

Porsche adds Spyder variant to Boxster range

The Boxster Spyder is Porsche’s lightest car, at just 1,275kg. That’s probably just around 75kg heavier than my BMW E30 3-Series.

It is a tribute to the Spyder nameplate that’s been used on various cars in Porsche history such as the 550 Spyder and the RS Spyder. It will be the third variant in the Boxster range, joining the existing Boxster and Boxster S models.

The Porsche Boxster Spyder has two bulges on the single piece rear lid, something that the regular Boxster does not have. The bulges make it look rather Carrera GT-ish. It’s got the same engine as the Boxster S, a 3.4 liter boxer yet is lighter than the Boxster.

Power is up 10 horses from the Boxster S engine at 320hp, and when mated to the PDK double clutch transmission and equipped with the Sports Chrono Package, 0 to 100km/h takes 4.8 seconds.

What I’m curious about though is what makes the Boxster Spyder lighter than the Boxster and the Boxster S. They probably removed the folding mechanism for the soft top roof, which means it’s manual now. Porsche’s press kit does not mention what else is gone.

Volkswagen to take 49.9% stake in Porsche

Volkswagen has announced that it will take a 49.9% stake in sports car maker Porsche in a first step towards merging with the company. Volkswagen’s initial plan was to acquire 42% of Porsche and with the increase in stake, Volkswagen’s position in the equation will be stronger sooner than expected. The German auto giant also assured that the merger between both companies is still scheduled to take place in 2011.

Currently both companies are working together in certain areas such as manufacturing the Porsche Cayenne and the Volkswagen Touareg in the same plant as well as the utilization of Volkswagen’s 3.6 liter V6 by Porsche. The above mentioned 49.9% stake will cost $5.8 billion and the company also assured that it is committed in “preserving the independence and the interests of Porsche” – which is a good move.

Porsche will join other brands like Bugatti, Audi, Lamborghini as well as Bentley to become the company’s 10th brand. Volkswagen also announced that it plans to increase its preferred share capital by the first half of 2010 in order to refinance the participation and maintain Volkswagen’s good credit rating.

Cabrio version of the Panamera being developed?

Porsche insiders have revealed that a convertible version of the Panamera is coming up, and it will have its two rear doors dropped to increase chassis rigidity, making up for the lack of a roof. Porsche also wants to minimize the weight of the extra chassis reinforcements needed, which would swell up if it also had to make up for the fact that it had four doors.

Official statements from the company have been vague so far although they definitely point in a positive direction. “We have a broad range of 14 derivatives of the 911 that are very successful. So it stands to reason we should diversify the lineup for the Panamera as well,” said Porsche development chief Wolfgang Duerheimer. According to the insiders, the premium of having a convertible roof should add about 11,000 Euros to the roofed version’s price.

Porsche Panamera range launched in Malaysia

The Porsche Panamera is now available from Auto Eurokars with a 2+2 year extended warranty. You can get either a Panamera S with a 6-speed manual, or the Panamera 4S and Panamera Turbo with 7-speed twin clutch PDK gearboxes.

Porsche Panamera S – RM998,000.00
Porsche Panamera 4S – RM1,118,000.00
Porsche Panamera Turbo – RM1,398,000.00

All the cars use a 4,806cc V8 engine but naturally the difference is that the Turbo has twin turbochargers. In normally aspirated form, the engine makes 400 PS at 6,500rpm and 500Nm of torque between 3,500rpm to 5,000rpm. When twin-blown, this goes up to 500 PS at 6,000rpm and 700Nm of torque between 2,250-4,500rpm.

Other than the differentiation in terms of 4WD and the turbo for the Turbo, the 4S and the Turbo also comes with auto start-stop, which the S does without. The 4S and Turbo also has a larger fuel tank of 100 liters compared to the S’s 80 liters.

Other than that, most other specs are the same except the Turbo gets a better 14 speaker BOSE sound system compared to the “standard” 10 speaker system. Porsche 911 Sport Classic with ‘ducktail’ spoiler

Porsche will be selling a special 250 unit limited edition Porsche 911 Sport Classic. The 911 Sport Classic was developed by Porsche Exclusive, a department within Porsche that develops customised versions of Porsche cars.

The 911 Sport Classic is based on the Carrera S, but has a 44mm wider rear body. Power comes from a 3.8 liter DFI engine with a new intake that increases power by 23hp from the regular Carrera S – this means it now produces 408 horses.

There is a rear spoiler in a fixed position made to look like the “ducktail” from the 1973 Carrera RS 2.7. This is probably where the word “Classic” comes into play. The exterior paintjob is only available in Sport Classic Grey while the interior is done up in Espresso Nature natural leather.

The 911 Sport Classic will go on sale January next year at a base price of 169,300 Euros. That’s quite a premium over a regular Carrera S which goes for 78,000 Euros.

Porsche 911 GT3 Cup: 450HP of pure track madness

Porsche has recently revealed the 911 GT3 Cup, which is essentially a track-ready Porsche based on the 911 GT3 RS. Powered by the same 450HP 3.8 liter 6-cylinder motivator used in the GT3 RS, the Cup version is treated to a wider body (by 44 mm) and flared wheel arches at the rear, wider wheel arches at the front as well as a fully controlled catalytic converter. It also comes with an all-new exhaust system and better stopping power thanks to Porsche’s Ceramic Composite Brakes system, which is actually 20 kilograms lighter than the composite cast brake discs featured on the Carrera Cup cars.

The 1,200 kg sports car also features improved downforce with a lower front spoiler lip and wider rear wing that is mounted higher as well. Sitting on light-alloy wheels, measuring 9.5 J x 18 and wrapped with 4/64-18 Michelin racing tires (rear wheels are wider by an inch), the GT3 Cup also comes with additional Unibal joints that are featured on the track control arms, adjustable sword-shaped anti-roll bars front and rear (adjustable to seven different positions on both sides), repositioned controls for the Info Display, height adjustment for the steering wheel and an additional vent in the upper part of the front lid to help provide the driver with an even better supply of fresh air.

Potential buyers can expected deliveries by October and you would have to part with 149,850 Euros. The Porsche 911 GT3 is exclusively available in Carrera White and is expected to compete in the Porsche Mobil1 Supercup, Porsche Carrera Cup and the GT3 Cup Challenge.

Porsche’s fiercer GT3: The 911 GT3 RS

The Porsche 911 GT3 RS, a more hardcore version of the 911 GT3 was recently revealed by the Stuttgart-based auto maker. It is motivated by the same 3.8 liter 6-cylinder engine, but instead of producing 435HP in the GT3, it pumps out a total of 450HP. Mated to a 6 speed sequential gearbox (with a short transmission ratio compared to the standard GT3), the GT3 RS features higher downforce compared to the standard GT3 (with an extra-large carbon-fiber rear wing), a lighter lithium-ion battery (by 10 kg, available as an option) and a lightweight titanium sports exhaust system.

Futhermore, it comes standard with dynamic engine mounts that change in their stiffness and damping effect as well as PASM suspension with wider tracks on both axles. Being slightly wider than the standard GT3, thanks to additional wheel arch covers, it is offered with 245/35 ZR 19 sports tires up front and 325/30 ZR 19 tires at the back. It also sits closer to the ground compared to the milder GT3. It goes on sale in Germany from January next year, with a 122,400 Euros price tag.

There’s a whole load of new videos on the new Porsche 911 Turbo released by the German sportscar company in conjunction with the new facelifted type 997 turbocharged sports car that was just unveiled a few days ago. If you check out the “Personality” video, Porsche even describes what exactly has changed with the car’s aesthetics. At first glance the two cars look the same and the changes are in the fine details. The videos are pretty long so take your time to enjoy them!

997 Porsche 911 Turbo gets mid-life facelift

Porsche’s mid-life facelift for the 997 Porsche 911 Turbo Coupe and Cabriolet will be exhibited to the public for the first time at the Frankfurt show this September. The 911’s rear-mounted boxer-6 engine is now 3.8 liters instead of the pre-facelift’s 3.6 liters in size. The engine also now adds direct injection and continues to use the variable geometry turbochargers found on the 3.6 liter unit. The engine now makes 500 horses, up from 480 on the previous edition of the 997.

Porsche seems to also have come to their senses with the way they implement their manual paddle shift system. Before this, the shifters were buttons on the steering wheel and both the left and right side set of buttons could do both upshifting and downshifting. I found it quite unnatural, but apparently that was the way Porsche did things when I asked why they had that weird setup.

Well, with this new “997.5″, a proper set paddle shifters can be fitted – a simple setup of a right paddle for upshifts and a left paddle for downshifts. This is for the 7-speed PDK twin clutch transmission.

There is also something called Porsche Torque Vectoring (PTV) which works together with the rest of the drive systems to route traction to the wheel with the most grip without losing some power via selective braking.

The new 911 Turbo will go for upwards of £101,823 (RM587.5k) for the Coupé and £109,048 (RM629k) for the Cabriolet. Of course, in Malaysia they go for much higher – RM1,373,000 for the 911 Turbo and RM1,409,000 for the 911 Turbo Cabriolet. The GT2 tops the pricelist at RM1,720,000.

Rumour: Daimler to buy stake in Porsche?

With the industry being the way it is now, there have been plenty of talks about this or that brands being sold here and there, and of mergers, alliances, and share swaps.

The latest are rumours that Daimler, who have also been said to possibly do a stake swap with BMW, is in deep talks since the end of May 2009 to take up a stake in Porsche. This was according to a German business magazine called “manager magazin“.

Despite achieving things like owning a large amount of Volkswagen Group shares, Porsche is currently in debt (likely thanks to the Volkswagen stake buys) and has asked for German state aid while in talks to sell a stake to Qatar via the Qatar Investment Authority. Its debt tripled to 9 billion Euros after it raised its Volkswagen stake to 50.8% earli this year.

A Daimler AG spokesperson dismissed the report as speculation, while spokespersons from Porsche and Volkswagen said they were not aware if there were such talks.

Status Design bodykit for the Porsche Cayenne

We’ve seen some pretty aggressive Porsche Cayenne bodykits around and people are actually buying them and slapping them onto their cars, even here in Malaysia. But really, this is possibly the most outrageous bodykit of all. Just look at that Enzo-like nose cone! This kit was developed by Status Design, a company based in Moscow, Russia. If you ever want your Cayenne to look like some kind of bizarre Enzo-Peugeot hybrid, this is your solution. Right now it’s all just on paper as a preview, but the company aims to put the kit into production.

Here’s some promo footage that Porsche shot of their latest car, the 4-door Porsche Panamera grand tourer. The 2010 model year car was first unveiled at Auto Shanghai 2009 just last month in production form.

At launch time, only V8 models will be available. Both front mounted engines will be similiar to the V8 motors in the Porsche Cayenne SUV, one normally aspirated and one turbocharged. Like the baseline Cayenne, a baseline 3.6 liter V6 model will come later, including a hybrid model.

Porsche Panamera Coupe: a 928 successor?

The only front engine Porsches sold right now are the Cayenne and the new Panamera, which are SUV and 4-door models respectively.

Looking at how other luxury marques are having success selling front engine sports coupe models such as Aston Martins and the Ferrari 599 GTB Fionaro, Porsche is rumoured to be bringing back the 928.

Front engine cars like this offer the possibility of a larger boot space to enhance the vehicle’s tourer functions – the 599 has 320 liters while the Aston Martin V12 Vantage has 300 liters. In comparison, the 911 Turbo only has 105 liters of luggage space.

A modern day 928 would essentially be a two-door short wheelbase coupe version of the Porsche Panamera. It could be called the Panamera Coupe or get a new name.

2010 Porsche Panamera 4-door GT officially revealed at Auto Shanghai 2009!

The new Porsche Panamera has finally made its world public debut at the 2009 Auto Shanghai show in China. The fact that its debut location was picked in China shows us how China and other Asian markets are fast coming up the radar of European marques such as Porsche. In fact, Porsche sales in Asia grew 140% during the last fiscal year.

At launch time only the V8 and turbocharged V8 models will be made available but Porsche has revealed that a more economical 3.6 liter V6 and a hybrid model will be coming later. The Panamera measures 4970mm in length and 1420mm in height and offers 4 seats with a center console stretching all the way from the dash to the rear separating the left and right occupants.

The Panamera will also offer a start-stop system with the automatic transmission (this is usually paired only with a manual in the past), an air suspension with additional air volume available on demand in each spring, and an adjustable extendable rear spoiler in the Panamera Turbo.

Gemballa paddle shift steering for Porsche PDK

I never did understand why Porsche used that weird rocker switch thing for the steering-mounted gear shifters.

Thankfully there are many who share my views, including Porsche tuner Gemballa, who have just released this Gemballa F1 steering wheel for the Porsche PDK dual clutch transmission. It offers some proper paddle shifts with left for downshift and right for upshift.

Nice and ergonomic, just like how everyone else does it! The steering wheel rim is also pretty darn thick for a firmer grip and includes the standard airbag.

Porsche reveals five key innovations for its Panamera

With the launch of the Porsche Panamera expected to take place at the Shangai Motor Show next month, the Stuttgart-based sports car maker has revealed five key innovations that will debut with the 4 door Panamera. A number of these innovations are things which we are already familiar with, but these features, for the first time will be implemented in the Panamera’s market segment.

First up on the list in the automatic start/stop system in conjunction with an automatic transmission. The start/stop system is coupled with Porsche’s PDK transmission that helps the Panamera to deliver 100 kilometers with 10.8 liters of fuel based on the new European driving cycle. To help improve fuel efficiency, the Panamera also comes with tires that feature minimum roll resistance.

Next up is the adaptive air suspension with additional air volume on demand. Basically, the driver can add more volume into the system on demand, that will then change the characteristics of the Gran Turismo. This system is standard for the Panamera Turbo, and optional for Panamera S and Panamera 4S.

Then, there is also an active aerodynamics system with a 4-way adjustable rear spoiler that moves up when required on the Panamera Turbo. Via its efficient management of control angles and surface geometry geared to driving conditions, the rear spoiler optimizes the Panamera’s aerodynamics, which can then help improve down force at high speeds.

The Panamera is also the first car in its segment that comes with a complete cover on the under-floor that extends to the drivetrain tunnel and rear-end silencers. This feature helps reduce both air resistance and lift forces on the axles, which in practice means lower fuel consumption and higher driving dynamics.

Lastly, the Panamera also features a lightweight construction technology typical of a sports car, that uses advanced production methods and materials. Such materials include all kinds of steel grades, light alloys such as aluminium and magnesium, as well as plastics.

The lightweight doors also feature a load-bearing structure made of laser-treated pressure-cast aluminium, an aluminium outer skin and door window frames made of thin-walled pressure-cast magnesium. This enables the Panamera S, which also features adjustable rear seats to feature an overall weight that is rated at 1,770 kilograms. Continue reading to view an image gallery.

Porsche 997 V-RT Edition Turbo

Vorsteiner V-RT (Vorsteiner Race Technologies) has revealed a new styling package for the 997 Porsche 911 Carrera. The styling package consists of an aerodynamic body kit as well as a new set of wheels.

The aerodynamic body kit, which is mostly made of carbon fiber features larger front air intakes, a new rear bumper with twin-finned carbon fiber rear diffuser for the quad exhaust and larger side vents to improve airflow, a carbon fiber wing that help improves downforce and a carbon composite engine lid with extra air scoops to channel more air into this 997. Just like the GT2 version, Vorsteiner had to let the front fog lamps lose, to make way for a removable carbon fiber front spoiler.

The new 20-inch V306 wheels feature a twin, 7 spoke design with a centre mesh. These wheels are wrapped with Michelin Pilot Sport PS2 sports tires. Please continue reading to view an image gallery.

UK: Porsche Panamera S to start from £77,269

Porsche has released confirmed pricing for the Porsche Panamera grand tourer in the UK. The Panamera will start from £72,266 (RM 397,160) for the Panamera S, going up to £77,269 for the Panamera 4S and £95,298 for the top of the range Panamera Turbo.

The baseline Panamera S comes with a 6-speed manual and rear wheel drive as standard, and can be upgraded to a 7-speed PDK dual clutch gearbox for £2,289. The 4S and Turbo has an active all-wheel drive system with Porsche Traction Management (PTM) and features the PDK gearbox as standard.

The all-wheel drive does help with traction especially to get all the power down properly from a standing start, since 0 to 100km/h in the 4S takes only 5 seconds compared to 5.4 seconds on the S model, both with the PDK gearbox.

The Panamera is exclusively V8 at the moment with both normally aspirated versions and a top of the line turbo version, but who is to say a Panamera S Hybrid with the same hyrbid powertrain of a 3.0 supercharged V6 TSI mated to an electric motor from the Cayenne S Hybrid won’t appear later?

Geneva 2009: Sportec SP 550mc with CNG

Sportec has revealed the SP 550mc which is based on the Porsche 911 Turbo at the Geneva Motor Show. Although the tuner has yet to reveal further details regarding the emissions output of this new project, but we do know that it is an eco-friendly sports car which features a CNG, or compressed natural gas conversion kit which simply means that this new iteration of the 911 Turbo can be fueled with either petrol or CNG.

Performance figures starts off with it being able to sprint from naught to 100 km/h in just 3.7 seconds, all the way to the 331 km/h top speed mark thanks to its 3.6 liter biturbo power plant mounted at the back which is able to produce 550HP and 705Nm of torque. Other upgrades include a special filter that works with the turbochargers that optimizes flow rate which ensures adequate air supply for the engine, a sports exhaust with high capacity catalytic converters and Michelin Pilot Sport PS2 tires that offer by up to 19% less rolling resistance.

Sportec has also improved the 911 Turbo’s aerodynamic efficiency by installing unobtrusive side skirts, a new front spoiler, a three part apron as well as a large rear wing spoiler. Continue reading to view two more images of the Sportec SP 550mc.

Geneva 2009: Porsche unleashes the GT3

Stuttgart-based sports car maker Porsche has revealed the new 911 GT3 at the Geneva Motor Show in Switzerland. Given an updated look by improving, among others, the front end and rear design, the rear wing and adding the distinctive LED tail lights, the 911 GT3 is now more powerful with its 3.8 liter naturally-aspirated flat-six engine which is good for 435HP and 429Nm of torque.

The improvement accounts for a 20HP bump in performance which enables the car to do 312 km/h. Other features of the GT3 include Porsche’s Active Stability Management (PASM) system as well as Porsche’s Stability Management (PSM) system and ceramic composite brakes, just to name a few.

The Porsche 911 GT3 goes on sale later this year with a prices starting from 98,100 Euros. Depending on what you opt for, it can go as high as 116,947 Euros. Click here to learn more about the 911 GT3 as well as to view an image gallery.

858HP Sportec-tuned Porsche 911 to be unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show

Automotive tuner; Sportec has revealed that it will showcase an ultra-exclusive, up-rated Porsche 911 in Geneva, Switzerland. Based on the “997” 911 Turbo, the Sportec SPR1 M features a wheel spinning 858HP and a chassis twisting 880Nm of torque thanks to a T80 M (based on the 3.6 liter turbo power plant) engine package.

To take things to a another level, Sportec has completely rebuilt the entire car from the ground up and has used a good deal of carbon fiber to keep things light as feather. With the light weight structure, coupled with an 858HP power plant, this is one seriously fast coupe.

The most interesting thing about the SPR1 M is that only 10 units will ever be produced, which makes me wonder about the price tag, over a factory 911 Turbo. The tuner has yet to release any other performance figures, but the previous SPR1 model managed to hit 100 km/h in 3 seconds and continued till the needle hit 300 km/h, which can be achieved in 18.9 seconds from zero. So expect a slightly lower sprint time and a higher top speed mark.

Sportec will also showcase a number of other vehicles including; an Audi RS 6-based Sportec RS700 as well as the SP750 which is based on the “997” Porsche GT2.

Porsche Cayenne S Hybrid with supercharged V6!

The Porsche Cayenne Hybrid concept from 2007 is now back as the Porsche Cayenne S Hybrid! The S moniker indicates the gaso-electric Cayenne will not just be for celebrities who’ve outgrown their Priuses, it’ll also be fast! S could also mean Supercharged, as the engine under the hood is the same 3.0 TFSI V6 from the Touareg V6 TSI Hybrid Prototype, so you can’t really call it a Cayenne Turbo Hybrid, and Cayenne Super Hybrid just sounds silly.

In fact if you sit down and compare specifications the Cayenne S Hybrid looks like a reskinned Touareg V6 TSI Hybrid Prototype, since the Cayenne and Touareg share a similiar chassis. It’s got the same 333 PS and 440Nm 3.0 supercharged V6, same 52 horsepower electric motor, and the same 8-speed automatic transmission! The hybrid SUV can reach top speed in 6th gear, and uses the 7th and 8th ratios to lower engine revs for better fuel economy, since there is already so much grunt.

Like its Touareg equivalent, the Cayenne S Hybrid has an electric only mode with a maximum range of about 2km. This is used primarily for coasting along the highways on the 8th gear of the transmission (max speed of 140km/h) as the pressure on the accelerator pedal will restart the combustion engine within 300ms, and Porsche says the restart process together with reengaging the clutches is so smooth that the occupants won’t notice it.

Porsche says a similiar system will find its way into the Porsche Panamera so expect the currently V8-only Porsche Panamera 4-door to also offer a V6 Hybrid version called the Porsche Panamera S Hybrid.

Here’s a nice 2 minute and 41 second video that Porsche made in conjunction with the launch of the new facelifted Porsche Boxster and Porsche Boxster S with the PDK twin clutch transmission. It starts off going back in time to one of the first Porsches without a roof with some motorsports involvement, and then later you get the see the hot red facelifted Porsche Boxster S negotiating some mountain roads. It’s a pretty good production actually, so check out the video after the jump.

New facelifted Porsche 911 GT3 initial details

The 911 GT3 has been updated and is set to make a public debut at the Geneva show in March, so Porsche has released an initial set of images for those of us hungry to check out the changes made to Porsche’s latest “track car for the road”.

The GT3 is the most powerful normally aspirated Type 997 Porsche 911, as the Turbo and the GT2 are turbocharged. The engine has been upsized to 3.8 liters and peak power is now 435hp, up 20 horses from the pre-facelift model. Porsche VarioCam is now active on both the intake and exhaust valves, as the predecessor only had it on the intake valves. 0 to 100km/h takes 4.1 seconds, if you shift the manual gearbox perfectly.

The new facelifted Type 997 Porsche 911 GT3 now has a sports-oriented variant of the Porsche Stability Management system which offers the driver the choice to deactivate Stability Control and Traction Control in separate steps. If turned off, they won’t kick in even at the most dire of circumstances, only when the driver pushes the necessary buttons to let them kick in again.

The car’s aerodynamics have been improved, and Porsche claims overall air pressure pushing down on the car is more than twice greater than the former model. Both front and rear downforce has been improved. Springs and anti-rollbars are now stiffer, and the wheels are lighter, and all of this improves handling.

Along with the improved VarioCam, the keyword for the updates to the new GT3 seem to be “variable”. The 911 GT3 now has the option of Porsche Active Drivetrain Mount (PADM) engine mountings. The PADM recognises when the driver is driving sportily and automatically makes the engine mounts harder and resistant. During normal day to day driving they remain “elastic”, which improves comfort. The front axle can be raised via the active suspension at the touch of a button. It goes up by 30mm to help the car navigate bumpy surfaces and steep gradients.

The 911 GT3 will go on sale in the UK and Ireland for £81,914 and buyers will also receive a complimentary course at the Porsche Driving Experience Centre in Silverstone. For those that cannot enjoy such a privilege at the moment, look after the jump to enjoy some photos and a video.

New optional dual-mode sports exhaust system for the Posche 911 Carrera and Targa 4

More and more car manufacturers especially those at the higher end of the price range are entering the aftermarket modification domain, traditionally serviced by the likes of Hamann and etc. Porsche is now selling an optional sports exhaust system for the Porsche 911 Carrera and Targa 4 that goes on sale from February 2009 onwards.

The exhaust system has a quad tailpipe layout and each main silencer has a flap that is activated by the engine’s ECU. A driver can press a “sound mode” button on the center console to vary the sound of the exhaust and switch over to a more sporty sound which is activated by the flap.

The 911’s sporty exhaust system retails for 1,610 Euros including taxes in Europe, or US$ 2,500 in the US. While it will only be available from the factory with new purchases in February, an aftermarkat fitment option will be available from April 2009 onwards.

Porsche 911 GT3 RSR updated for 2009

The Porsche 911 GT3 RSR has been updated for 2009. From the outside, you’ll notice the larger air outlets on nose, which feed air into the radiators. On the rear you have a rear wing with a wider adjustment range. The brakes and wiring harness have also been “weight-optimised” (lightened) to improve handling.

The engine bay has gone through some big changes. For one, the 3.8 liter boxer-6 engine is now 4.0 liters, thanks to an increased stroke of 80.4mm compared to 76.4mm in the previous car. Peak engine power is now actually lower, putting out 450hp at 7,800rpm compared to the old car’s 465hp at 8,000rpm. The rev limiter is fixed at 9,000rpm although the engine has a maximum speed of 9,400rpm. Peak torque remains the same, with 430 Newton meters achieved at 7,250rpm. Porsche says the engine now makes more power at low revs, so for each RPM range the new GT3 RSR actually puts out more power despite the peak numbers getting a slight drop.

The interior has a new multi-function display located above the dashboard which can indicate optimum shift timing. The car is quite programmable, for example even the blinking frequency of the lights in the front apron can be infinitely adjustable to help pit crew recognise their car when it rolls in during a night race. For easier pit crew work, the new RSR also features an air-jack system. The oil filler has been moved to the rear lid, which provides for easier access.

2010 Porsche Panamera will make public debut in April at Auto Shanghai 2009

Porsche has released 4 more hi-res images of the Porsche Panamera, together with an official announcement of the car’s debut at the Auto Shanghai 2009 show in China from the 20th of April 2009 to the 28th of April 2009. The 4-door GT will make its showroom debut after that in summer 2009.

Although the China display will only feature the normally aspirated V8 and twin turbocharged V8 models, there will also be an entry level V6 engine producing at least 300 horsepower, and the entire engine range features direct fuel injection. The twin turbocharged Panamera Turbo will come exclusively with Porsche Traction Management with active all-wheel drive, but while the V6 and V8 units come standard with rear wheel drive, PTM is an option.

Another option is the adaptive air suspension system that is an upgrade from the regular steel suspension specified on the Panamera. This air suspension can also adjust ride height on the fly, and lowers the car to the maximum setting in Sport Plus Mode. This provides a lower center of gravity. Also an option is PDCC or Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control, which from its description in the press release sounds like an active anti-roll bar which auto-adjusts to fight body roll in corners but releases itself for better straight line bumpy road smoothness.

A 6-speed manual or a 7-speed PDK twin clutch transmission is available, but Porsche did not reveal in this latest press release which transmissions are standard and optional on which models. So we’ll have to wait until the China show for the full details on this new 4-door GT.
