  • The British Dream Car

    dreamcar.jpg

New Car Net did an interesting experiment – they conducted a survey on their website, allowing the public to vote for what they wanted in a car. Different elements were available – overall car silhouette, wheel design, front end, back end, engine, seats, doors – and guess what the UK buyer’s dream car is?

A four-door coupe with the front end of a Porsche Boxster, the roofline of the Jaguar XK, stretched to allow it to be a 5-seater, and has a medium sized engine, no big supercar engine, but no Tamiya motor either. Not suprisingly, diesel power had the edge of petrol as the fuel of choice.

Know what. Looks pretty much like a Porsche Panamera to me, or at least what I imagine the car would look like. This means the Panamera would like be another runaway success similiar to the Cayenne.

  • Porsche Panamera spotted testing!

    panamerablue.jpg

This weird blue car which looks like a stretched 997 Porsche 911 with four doors is a test mule for Porsche’s new Grand Tourer car, the Porsche Panamera, set to be launched in a few years time perhaps as a 2009 model.

The front engined rear wheel drive car will be built exclusively by Porsche in it’s Leipzig plant in Germany, with no current platform sharing plans with it’s Volkswagen and Audi friends. Engines will come from Porsche’s plant in Stuttgart, while bodies and paint will be finished at Volkswagen AG’s Hanover plant.

The 2009 Porsche Panamera will go against more established Grand Tourers like the Bentley Continental GT, the BMW M6, the Ferrari 612 Scaglietti and the upcoming Aston Martin Rapide.

  • 2007 Porsche 911 Turbo (997)

    997t_title.jpg

This is coming a little late, considering the new 997 Porsche 911 Turbo was launched a month ago in Malaysia on the 21st of July 2006, but then again I don’t think many of you are in a rush to go out and buy this fine piece of engineering in the form of a supercar, are you? Even if you wanted to. Sniff. Anyway. Let’s have a look at what new technological goodies are packed into the new 997 2007 Porsche 911 Turbo.

  • How does Variable Turbine Geometry work?

vtg_1.jpgVariable Turbine Geometry technology is the next generation in turbocharger technology where the turbo uses variable vanes to control exhaust flow against the turbine blades. See, the problem with the turbocharger that we’ve all come to know and love is that big turbos do not work well at slow engine speeds, while small turbos are fast to spool but run out of steam pretty quick. So how do VTG turbos solve this problem?

  • VISUALIS Gold Porsche Boxster

    goldboxster.jpg

VISUALIS commissioned goldsmith and artist Bernd Hoeger to create this special Porsche Boxster. What makes it special is it’s completely coated with gold. VISUALIS will be making nine other gold-gilded Porsches, making the gold collection a total of ten.

These 9 gold-gilded Porsches will be picked by interested buyers. Basically you pick a Porsche model like the 911 or even the Cayenne, they dip it into gold (an understatement of the complications of the process, really) and sell it to you. Porsche warranty is not affected by this process. Anyone interested?

  • Porsche patents dual-clutch gearbox design

    porsche_911_turbo_back.jpg

Porsche has filed patents indicate the company is developing a new seven-speed DSG gearbox for use in it’s sports cars range. The Volkswagen Group’s Direct Shift Gearbox or DSG is a manual gearbox with dual computer controlled clutches. And it shifts fast, real fast. This could either be a Porsche design or an adaptation of Volkswagen’s BorgWarner DSG, considering Porsche’s close connection with the Volkswagen Group. Also, it’s not known yet whether Porsche will be calling their system DSG or something else. Audi uses Volkswagen’s DSG but calls it S-Tronic. The DSG is also expected to end up in Lamborghinis soon.

Porsche currently has manual and Tiptronic automatic transmissions for it’s cars. The original plan was to introduce the new DSG in time for the latest 2007 Porsche 911 Turbo (model 997) launch but it didn’t happen. BTW, stay tuned for an article on the new 997 Porsche 911 Turbo which was launched in Malaysia by Auto Eurokars last Friday.

  • 2009 Porsche GT1 – a Bugatti Veyron killer

    porsche_carrera_gt.jpg

The Bugatti Veyron is the current benchmark of exotic raw supercar performance, surpassing the 1000hp mark and has been the talk of town long before it was actually launched. That might end soon. Porsche is planning a Bugatti Veyron killer called the Porsche GT1. The announcement of the new GT1 comes shortly after Porsche announced the end of production for the Porsche Carrera GT. The Carrera GT (shown above) was only in production for 3 years and there are only 1,111 in the world, with more than half of it in North America.

The new Porsche GT1 will offer roughly 950 horsepower and will likely be based on the same chassis as the Porsche Carrera GT, except that it will have a solid roof coupe body instead of being a roadster. Despite having “only” 950 horses, the GT1 is expected to be lighter than the Veyron for better power to weight ratio. The Porsche Carrera GT weighs only 1380kg while the Veyron weighs 1887kg. The GT1 is expected to be around the same weight as the Carrera GT. Of course, it will likely have all wheel drive to put all those horses down to the ground so they can be usable for some good acceleration times. Top speed is expected to be 254mph (408 km/h), 2mph over the Veyron’s top speed of 252mph.

And of course, it’s not that hard to beat the Veyron’s looks. ;)
