Toyota to go turbocharger and direct injection downsized engine route for next generation vehicles

While European automakers have gone the engine downsizing and forced induction route for an entire generation of cars now, Asian automakers such as Toyota, Honda and Mazda have not fully embraced the idea yet.

The only Asian carmaker that has announced a small displacement downsized engine that I can remember in the past year is Nissan with their MR16DDT 1.6 litre and H4Jt 1.4 litre inline-4 turbocharged engines, and i suspect even that is because of Renault influence. Honda dabbled with a turbocharged 2.3 litre i-VTEC turbo 4-potter for the US market but they’ve not announced a new internal combustion engine in a very long time, which is a little disappointing for a car company who used to be known for their engines. Their last major announcement was AVTEC and then nothing!

But with the latest round of Euro emission standards coming around we are starting to see this change as Toyota have just announced that it intends to increase the Toyota fleet’s fuel efficiency via turbochargers and direct fuel injection in smaller vehicles. According to Toyota executive vice president in charge of R&D Takeshi Uchiyamada, turbochargers and direct injection will soon be a regular feature in the entire Toyota line-up, including bread and butter models like the Corolla and the Camry.

The new 1.33 litre 1NR-FE featured in cars like the Euro market Auris, Yaris, iQ could be a prime candidate to receive this technology. It’s Toyota’s newest 4 cylinder engine family and features Dual VVT-i and auto start-stop technology. The high compression ratio of 11.5:1 would have to be brought down to something like 9.5:1 to 10.5:1 of course.

From the normally aspirated 101hp and 132Nm at a lowish 3,800rpm, we could see it brought up to something like 130hp-150hp and 180Nm-200Nm to replace the bigger engines in the Corolla.

‘New Toyota Rush’ specs, price released on UMWT website

There’s going to be a ‘new’ Toyota Rush coming our way soon, as previewed on UMW Toyota’s website, which has the car’s specs and expected pricing. Like the current car, there will be three variants available – 1.5G Manual, 1.5G Auto and the highest spec 1.5S, which can only be had as an auto.

The drivetrain will be unchanged. The Rush is powered by the 3SZ-VE 1.5-litre VVT-i engine with 109 PS and 141 Nm of torque made at 4,400 rpm. The auto ‘box it’s mated to is a gated four-speed unit and drive goes to the rear wheels – the Rush is a 2WD. Despite the SUV looks, this seven-seater’s underpinnings are adapted from the Avanza. The suspension consists of front struts and a rear lateral rod while brakes are front discs and rear drums. All variants ride on 215/65 R16 tyres.

Spec wise, the 1.5G (RM88,190 for manual, RM91,190 for auto, OTR with insurance) models makes do with just a driver’s airbag. For ABS, EBD and passenger’s airbag one needs to look at the RM96,990 1.5S model. The ‘S’ also comes with leather steering and gear knob, power retractable wing mirrors, rear spoiler with LED brake light, fog lamps and projector headlamps.

It looks like they’ve upgraded the stereo as it’s now a 2-DIN unit with MP3/USB/AUX functions (current car’s head unit still has a cassette player!) with steering wheel controls. The interior colour scheme will be changed to “dark” from the current brown/beige. These are standard across the range.

Exterior changes should be subtle and follow that of the 2009 model year JDM Toyota Rush. The prices are slightly increased from the January 2008 launch price of RM85,888, RM88,888 and RM94,888 for the three variants.

Honda Civic Hybrid and Toyota Prius battery replacement costs revealed!

The Star has a very interesting report which came out yesterday. It answers some of the questions that many motorists thinking of taking the leap to hybrid ownership will be asking, based on interviewing spokespersons from both Toyota and Honda, the only two companies which are selling hybrid cars in Malaysia that benefit from the new zero percent import and excise duty. Porsche also sells the Cayenne Hybrid here but because of its engine size, it doesn’t get any exemptions.

I would only take the battery prices information seriously as everything else are just claims that the cars have no issues.

  • The Toyota Prius battery costs RM11,500.
  • The Honda Civic Hybrid battery costs RM12,000 but there is a 15% discount for customers who buy from authorized dealers.
  • Prius warranty is 3 years or 100,000km which covers battery too.
  • Civic Hybrid warranty for battery is 3 years or 100,000km.
  • UMW Toyota claims there have not been a single battery replacement due to wear and tear in the US, where all generations of Prius have been on sale since 2000.
  • Priuses used as taxis in the US have clocked 400,000km without any hybrid component failure.
  • A Prius taxi that clocked 550,000km in Australia needed battery replacement due to a low voltage reading.

Second-generation Toyota RAV4 EV makes debut

toyota rav4 ev 1

Toyota has given its second-generation RAV4 EV its official debut at the LA show, and though the electric SUV’s market introduction isn’t due until 2012, the programme will certainly be busy up to then – a total of 35 vehicles will be built for demonstration and evaluation through 2011 ahead of the fully-engineered vehicle arriving in two years time.

When it does arrive, the RAV4 EV – which is jointly developed with Tesla Motors – will have a target range of 160 km in actual use, over a wide range of climates and conditions.

The RAV4 EV features several distinct exterior styling changes, and aside from new EV badging and a custom “mutually exclusive” exterior paint shade, distinct items include a new front bumper, grille, fog lamps and head lamps. Inside, there’s custom seat trim, multimedia dash displays, push-button shifter and dashboard meters in terms of new items.

The demonstration vehicle Toyota is currently testing is powered by a lithium metal oxide battery, with useable output rated in the mid-30 kWh range. Most noticeably, with the rear seats folded down, no cargo space was lost in the conversion to an electric powertrain.

Nonetheless, the battery size and final output ratings, as well as pricing and volume projections of the vehicle Toyota plans to bring to market eventually are not yet definite.

The demonstration mule weighs in approximately 220 pounds more than the current RAV4 V6, but Toyota says it will do the 0-100 kph sprint nearly as quickly as the latter. To negate this added weight, the SUV was given a significant retuning of major components and a prioritised focus on weight distribution – the suspension and steering have been modified significantly and major components have been relocated to better balance the increased mass of the battery pack.

The RAV4 EV’s introduction in 2012 will also see the arrival – in key global markets – of the Prius PHV (plug-in hybrid) and a small EV commuter vehicle.

Toyota Prius MPV interior photo teased on Facebook!

Toyota has released a new image of the upcoming Toyota Prius MPV, a longer and taller new addition to the Prius family, set to debut at the Detroit Auto Show in January 2011. We don’t know at the moment whether the new Prius family member will have 7-seats or whether it will merely be a “Prius Plus” for those who want larger interior and luggage space.

The latest bit of info is this new teaser image which shows us how the dashboard’s in-car entertainment and climate control area will look like. This shot is from a US market left hand drive car, since the full colour entertainment LCD panel is playing a American radio station. The gearknob and the power button looks similar to the one found in the Prius.

Second-generation Toyota RAV4 EV set for LA debut

rav4 ev 1

Toyota will be unveiling its second-generation RAV4 EV in concept form at the upcoming Los Angeles Auto Show, which begins on November 17. Ahead of it, the company has released a couple of images of the vehicle’s badging and instrument dial as a teaser.

It has certainly been a long while coming, the replacement for the original NiMH-equipped RAV4 EV – built on the first-generation XA10 RAV4 4-door platform – which the company leased in the US from 1997 to 2003.

The new RAV4 EV, sitting on a third-gen RAV4 XA30 platform, is the first development brought about by the collaboration between Toyota and Tesla Motors to develop battery-powered vehicles.

The SUV will feature a lithium-ion battery supplied by Tesla and is planned to have its market introduction in the US in 2012. No details have been released as yet, but the debut in LA should take care of that.

Despite woes, Toyota quadruples its profits to US$1.2 bil

toyota prius model

Despite all the negative publicity brought about by all those massive recalls involving more than 11 million vehicles globally, as well as the corresponding sales drop in the US, the Toyota juggernaut continues to go about its merry way, at least financially.

The company’s second quarter profit for the year has jumped more than four times year-on-year, with the Japanese automaker reporting a profit of 98.7 billion yen (or US $1.2 billion) for the July-September period, up from the 21.8 billion yen (US $268 million) profit last year.

Toyota raised its profit forecast from an earlier 340 billion yen (US S4.2 billion) to 350 billion yen (US $4.3 billion) for the year ending March 2011. It lowered its sales forecast in the US, but revised its yearly worldwide vehicle sales forecast to 7.41 million vehicles, up from 7.38 million earlier, with the company expecting positive sales in Europe, Asia and Japan to offset the lowered numbers coming from the US.

In Japan, it continues to do well, as exemplified by the likes of the Prius hybrid, which again was the country’s best-selling car in October, the 18th straight month it has held the No 1 slot, this despite tumbling sales brought about by the expiration of government subsidies for eco-friendly vehicles in early September. A total of 21,769 Priuses were sold last month, 19.1% less than Oct last year, though the number was still good enough to keep it heads above Honda’s Fit, which was second on the list with 14,034 units sold.

Toyota issues recalls on 136,000 Passo and iQ cars

toyota passo

Well, another recall to be had, this one from Toyota again. The Japanese automaker announced that it is recalling some 136,000 units of its Passo hatchback and iQ ultra-compact cars, with close to 65,000 vehicles in Japan and about nearly 71,000 cars in Europe being affected.

The recall is over a potential problem with a sensor on the power steering that may fail if the vehicle drives over humps, making the steering feel much heavier in use, though there are no reports of any accidents due to it. The affected vehicles were manufactured between October 2008 and October 2010, and the company says that the fix is a simple one involving an update to the software.

New Toyota Prius lowered price – RM139,900

The Toyota Prius will be priced at RM139,900 in the Peninsular Malaysia and RM141,500 in Sabah and Sarawak effective today. This is a drop of about RM35,000 in Peninsular Malaysia from the previous price of RM175,000.

That’s how much that remaining half-price excise duty means – RM35,000. Our prices are still higher than Langkawi’s prices as we still have 10% sales tax despite import duties and excise duties being 0% now. Just to recap – when the Budget 2011 was announced, the Malaysian government lowered the duties for hybrid vehicles below 2,000cc of displacement to 0% for both excise and import duty. Previously, the government gave 100% exemption of import duty but only 50% exemption for excise duty.

It looks like our estimation of the new Toyota Prius pricing after the complete removal of excise duties by the government was pretty much spot on after all. We estimated a price of around RM140,149.30 with a tax savings of about RM34,850.70. We calculated that based on the Langkawi price of RM127,408.45 and adding 10% sales tax. So we can assume that UMW Toyota is transferring 100% of the benefits of the tax break to the consumers.

New Toyota Prius

Next up would be the Honda Civic Hybrid – an announcement from Honda Malaysia should be coming soon before the end of the year. Our pricing estimation for the Honda Civic Hybrid was RM111,078, a drop of about RM18,902 from the current price of RM129,980.

At the new price of RM139,900, the Toyota Prius really starts becoming very tempting. The new price is also below RM150k so it becomes more favorable in terms of claiming capital allowances – that should start driving up sales for the Prius as a company car as well.

We tried the Prius (watch our real life road test review on Driven or our Japanese closed track test drive on this blog) and found that it could give significantly lower fuel consumption without the driver consciously trying hard to save fuel – that’s what a good hybrid should be doing, not forcing you to mind your throttle to the point that it becomes distracting and unenjoyable.

Toyota reports drop in global production, while rivals’ climb

For the first time in a year, Toyota has reported a drop in its global production for the month of September, with a 1.3% decrease to 672,604 vehicles, the result of slow sales in Europe and reduced output in the United States.

The company’s production volume in Europe dropped by 29.7%, with ebbing sales in the UK and Turkey responsible for the slump. As for the United States, volume was down by just over 4%, the result of a reduced output after the company shut down its joint venture plant, New United Motor Manufacturing Inc in California, in April. Nummi is where new occupants Tesla Motors will be building its electric vehicles from.

That, of course, contrasts with the output growth enjoyed by Honda and Nissan, which are benefitting from a strong demand in China. Honda’s global production went up by 9.2% to 328,368 vehicles in September, the 10th straight month it has risen year-on-year. It said production in Japan jumped 21.9%, helped by demand for its Fit hybrid, which the company launched early this month.

Meanwhile, for the 20th straight month, Nissan’s production climbed 27.2% globally to 395,658 vehicles year-on-year, with volumes increasing in China and the United States. Elewhere, both Mazda and Mitsubishi also reported improved output percentages, Mazda by 9.4% percent to 117,413 vehicles and Mitsubishi by an impressive 30.9% to 114,191 vehicles.
