Volkswagen Golf Variant RaVe 270

Volkswagen Golf Variant RaVe 270

This latest concept Volkswagen is high powered both in the trunk and under the hood. The Volkswagen Golf Variant RaVe 270 makes use of the Golf Variant station wagon’s extra boot space by fitting in a 1,400 Watt high end sound system.

The sound system is based around the new Volkswagen RNS 510 radio-navigation system. This is hooked up to three amps, chanelling sound to 13 speakers, a 880 watt subwoofer and two more 250 watt subwoofers. In the rear is two 12 inch monitors, in case music is not enough and you must have music videos too.

Under the hood is a tuned up version of the Golf GTI’s 2.0 liter TFSI engine putting out 270 PS, and this is mated to a twin clutch DSG gearbox sending power to all four wheels via the 4MOTION all-wheel drive system from the Golf R32.

Why Proton-Volkswagen was a no-go

I’m sure many of you who have been following the whole Proton-Volkwagen strategic tie-up soap opera are wondering, “What’s with the rather unexpected end result?”.

After all, it was only slightly more than a week ago that two financial papers reported of an imminent positive end result within a matter of weeks. All of a sudden, this bombshell, and naturally people are starting to believe the whole show was in fact an act, or a game even, to manipulate Proton share prices for the benefit of those with insider information.

In reality, things were actually looking positive - although nothing was confirmed - until last Friday or so. Sources reveal a meeting was held - one of the few final ones before the whole deal was to have been given the solid green light — so all parties involved could look at the big picture.

But sometime before this meeting, Proton’s management had a meeting with the government to appeal against this strategic alliance plan. Proton presented a road map of current achievements and future goals.

Somehow they managed to convince the government not to go ahead with the agreement, and to give them a second chance to turn around Proton, which they believed was already on the verge of a turn-around because of recent achievements such as the Proton Persona and export deals with China and Iran. The China deal was especially sweet: 30,000 completely built up Proton GEN2s in a rebadging deal with 80,000 to be assembled there by 2012 - a deal worth RM4 billion.

Convincing the government was not that difficult a thing to do considering they were not completely happy with the terms that Volkswagen had put down on the table in the first place. The people on the street — including you and me — will never know what exactly was in these terms and conditions - all we know are little bits and pieces regarding the formation of a new company that is majority held and controlled by Volkswagen and have core Proton businesses injected into it.

The terms and conditions apparently were completely skewed towards Volkswagen’s benefit and we really cannot blame them as Proton in its current state really doesn’t have much to offer other than a plant in which to build Volkswagen cars in and a few car platforms. Its dealer network is not one of the best around — too many dealers and the salesmen do not actually know how to sell cars. It would also be interesting to find out why some engineering consultancy jobs are given to LG CNS instead of Lotus Engineering. [Source]

So it was decided that Proton could still hold on and fight for the moment and any strategic tie-up should only happen when Proton is in a stronger position to negotiate. In its current weak position, anything that happens with a foreign partner would be more of a foreign takeover rather than a mutually beneficial strategic tie-up. Proton has presented a roadmap to the government on how it plans to achieve that stronger position, and they have been given strict performance targets according to the road map. If Proton succeeds, good - if not, the whole soap opera will likely start again. This is a second chance of sorts given to Proton by its majority stakeholder as per request from Proton’s management themselves.

We should give them the benefit of the doubt for the moment, considering we can now see a genuine desire to improve and positive results have come out of this desire. Proton has to improve the competitiveness of Proton cars in the international market - it cannot sell cars based on pure cheaper pricing without any other advantages forever. The Koreans are also starting to raise their prices, and Hyundai has even started to move upmarket with the RWD V8 Hyundai Genesis. This requires Proton cars to be up to date with the rest of the world in terms of technology and quality.

We are still making what are considered to be barebones plain vanilla cars. Building modern cars requires R&D. R&D requires money. Money requires more profit per car, and that is achieved with better economies of scale which reduces cost of making the car. Economies of scale requires more sales, which is one of the reasons why a tie-up with a foreign partner was seen as necessary — for reasons like sharing of key parts which improves economies of scale.

For now the decision has been made, and those who are crying over their shattered dreams of cheap Proton-badged Golfs to drive cannot really do anything about it. The next thing to look forward to from Proton is the new BLM in 2008 which is the long awaited new Proton Saga, an improved Campro engine with variable intake and CPS cam profiling, and a people carrier model expected in 2009.

Volkswagen Golf R32 launched in Malaysia

Golf R32

Volkswagen Malaysia has started selling the top of the range Volkswagen Golf R32 in Malaysia, featuring a 3.2 liter V6 engine and 4MOTION all-wheel drive, with a price tag of RM302,618.50 on the road without insurance.

It does the 0-100km/h sprint in 6.2 seconds - 0.7 seconds faster than the Golf GTI , thanks to it’s 250 PS at 6,300rpm and 320Nm of torque that kicks in from 2,800rpm, a relatively low engine speed for a normally aspirated engine. Power is sent to all four wheels via 4MOTION all-wheel drive and a 6-speed DSG gearbox.

Other than the 4MOTION system, the car also has ESP stability control, Traction Control, ABS, and an Electronic Differential Lock to keep things into check. Passive safety is provided by 6 SRS airbags. The car rides on 18 inch wheels of the Omanyt design.

On the interior you have nice sports bucket seats, rain sensor wiper control, dual-zone climate control, and a 10-speaker Volkswagen Sound RCD 500 system with an 8-channel 250W analog amplifier.

Proton-Volkswagen talks are OFF!

[ UPDATE: The talks between Proton and Volkswagen have been called off, but why? Click here for the inside scoop. ]

The verdict is out - Proton and Volkswagen are not tying up together in a partnership that involves stake transfer.

Second Finance Minister Tan Sri Nor Mohamed Yakcop says the earlier plan for Proton to have a foreign strategic partner was no longer applicable as circumstances have changed.

Proton has shown clear improvement in the recent months, including significantly improved sales figures and a popular new model. It will also be launching the new BLM soon, the long awaited People’s Car replacement for the ageing Proton Saga, which despite its age has also become a sales success in recent months thanks to the new Merdeka promotion pricing. The new Saga will come in 2008. There is also an MPV in the works for a 2009 launch.

Consumer confidence in Proton have also been slowly restored, though Proton has a long way to go in that area. Other improvements that the government noted include improving overseas ventures - Proton has had dealings with Iran and China recently. It exported 5,000 Wajas to Iran with plans for GEN2 assembly there, and negotiated a rebadging deal with China’s Jinhua Youngman for them to sell GEN2 cars there under the Europestar badge.

Tan Sri Nor Mohamed Yakcop says Volkswagen did not walk away from the negotiation, and there was no breakdown in talks. Volkswagen was disappointed in the government (Khazanah)’s decision to pull out of the talks, but respected its decision.

The government does not rule out the possibility of future strategic alliances with foreign partners, but only at a more appropriate time and when Proton is in a stronger negotiating position. And from what the public can see at least, Proton looks like it is on its way to that position.

Volkswagen Golf R32 in Malaysian showrooms soon?

r32_jpj_1.jpg

There are alot of Volkswagen Golf GTIs on the roads these days, probably Volkswagen Malaysia’s best selling car. It’s at that magical under RM200K mark too, although just barely at RM198,888.

While the 2.0 liter TFSI engine is sweet, and 200 PS combined with that excellent chassis is more than enough for most people, there will be those who desire more.

Enter the Volkswagen Golf R32, set to give the BMW 130i M Sport a run for its money. This is the car that Jeremy Clarkson picked in a shootout between the two, and it could be in Volkswagen Malaysia showrooms pretty soon thanks to this sighting at JPJ Putrajaya (photos thanks to jD), which is usually where alot of new CBU cars will be parked at for type approval and other procedures before they enter the market.

A launch sometime soon in time for the Christmas season perhaps?

Proton-VW deal could be signed in 2 weeks?

Proton LogoThis is some rather exciting news - business daily The Malaysian Reserve has a report quoting unnamed sources that Proton and Volkswagen will be signing a Memorandum of Understanding regarding a tie up involving stake holding within the next two weeks. The MoU is regarding the establishment of a new company which will own certain core Proton businesses.

Volkswagen will hold 20% of the stakeholding in this new company, but it is unknown who will hold the remaining 80%. The unnamed source also said Volkswagen would have management control of the new company, and the first project is likely to be a Perdana replacement model similiar to the Volkswagen Passat.

Proton managing director Datuk Syed Zainal denied knowing of any new developments regarding the Proton-VW deal when queried by The Malaysian Reserve.

You can pick up The Malaysian Reserve at most news stands and it goes for RM1.50. I was in Mid Valley making photocopies of some documents when I spotted the Proton headline on the front page of the paper in the news stand.

I rushed to d’lish to blog this, so this post is powered by d’lish’s tasty scones, hot tea and free internet. ;)

Volkswagen space up! Concept

Right on the back of Volkswagen’s two-door city specialist concept launched at Frankfurt, the up!, comes the space up! Concept, which as the name suggests, offers more space. The latest member of VW’s New Small Family range is strangely called the “largest small VW”, if that makes any sense, and at 3.68 metres length and 1.63 meters wide, it’s a small matter of 23cm longer than the up!

This results in a wheelbase of 2.56m, nearly 10cm longer than their current supermini, the Fox, despite being over 12cm shorter in overall length.

The entire concept is to create as much interior room as possible without taking up that much space on the road, hence offering the space of a considerably larger vehicle. The clever space concept of the space up! is mostly thanks to its rear-engine layout just like on the Beetle and the Bulli (Microbus) of the past.

Thanks to its elongated wheelbase, the space up! offers four doors, although there are in fact six doors (twice as many as the three-door hatchback up!) in this van concept car as the boot is accessed via a pair of fridge doors. Behind this door are 220 to 1,005 liters of cargo space given the multi-configurable four seat positions.

Design details include a front end featuring headlamps that take an inward diagonal line, the horizontally integrated air inlets (minimized aperture optimizes aerodynamics), the VW logo arranged on the front hood (as the only exterior detail kept in chrome) and the smooth-surfaced bumper with a lower segment.

From the side, the long extended window section flows from a clearly distinctive, powerful C-pillar to an A-pillar positioned far forward in a van-like manner. The space between the A and C pillars is spanned by the line of butterfly doors with opposing hinges. These suicide doors, in the style of the legendary Samba bus, extend across nearly the entire space between the wheel housings – i.e. the entire sill length – all four seating positions are exceptionally convenient to access.

The rear doors seem to fill up practically the entire car area above the bumper. The doors are asymmetrically split 1/3 to 2/3 and when fully opened, offer a cargo width of just over a metre.

While it certainly looks futuristic, its not really that over the top and you can imagine it going into production sometime in the future.

Volkswagen to reduce prices in US market

Volkswagen LogoVolkswagen will be reducing its prices in the US market in efforts to catch up with its Japanese rival Toyota. It will also be removing costly frills that many Americans don’t want in efforts to further make the cars more competitively priced.

“We have definitely added too many technical items that American customers don’t want to pay for. Wing mirrors that fold inward for instance, to account for narrow streets and tiny parking spaces. Who needs that in the U.S.? The streets there are so wide,” said Volkswagen CEO Martin Winterkorn.

Comparing Volkswagen and Toyota prices, Volkswagen’s Jetta currently has a US$1,800 premium over the Toyota Corolla, which retails at US$15,200. The Passat starts at US$23,900 while the Camry’s price is US$20,000 for a base model.

Proton-Volkswagen deal waiting for management control agreement

Proton LogoThe Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi says the government has not decided yet whether to allow management control of Proton by Volkswagen AG. He cited Volkswagen’s insistence on wanting to be very certain of everything - you could call it cautiousness - as one of the reasons why the deal is taking some time to be finalised.

“We want as soon as possible but we cant force them to hurry up,” added Abdullah. Apparently Volkswagen is just waiting for a nod from the government in regards to the management control.

Volkswagen NSF expected to miss price target

Volkswagen up Concept
Volkswagen up! Concept - a preview of the New Small Family (NSF) car?

While Tata seems to be right on track with their expected 1 lakh (US$2500) pricing of their 1 lakh car, Volkswagen’s NSF (New Small Family) project has exceeded the originally intended 8,000 Euro (RM38,000) price and is now expected to cost about 8,950 Euro (RM42,800).

Volkswagen intends to sell 462,000 units of the NSF annually, with 100,000 badged as Volkswagens in Europe and another 200,000 badged as Seats or Skodas, with the remaining 162,000 units to be sold in emerging markets.
