Volvo S80 2.5T facelift – extra 31 bhp, 40 Nm and safety kit

Volvo has unveiled the facelifted S80 this morning. No more CBU 3.2 model for Malaysia, but the locally assembled 2.5T variant lives on and has a lot more to offer than before, both under the hood and in equipment count, especially on the safety front.

The same turbocharged 2.5-litre five-cylinder engine is used, but with an extra 31 bhp and 40 Nm to make 231 bhp and 340 Nm available from 1,700 to 4,800 rpm. The substantial jump in figures is due to higher boost pressure, from the previous 0.5 bar to 0.8 bar. The added grunt results in improved performance; the 0-100 km/h sprint is completed in 7.5 seconds (previously 8.0 sec), leading Volvo to call its flagship “the fastest car in its class” (Volvo considers the E250 CGI and 523i as classmates).

Fuel consumption has improved as well, from 9.8 km/l to 10.4 km/l. Drive is channeled to the 17-inch front wheels via a six-speed automatic ‘box. Volvo also says that the “improved chassis” now offers “firmer handling”.

Unlike many CKD cars, this S80 is fully loaded with equipment, many of which weren’t available in the pre-facelift 2.5T. My favourite safety toy BLIS (Blind Spot Info System) is here, joined by Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), which is similar to Mercedes’ Distronic.

Also here is Collision Warning and Auto Brake, which alerts the driver with audible and visual signals should he/she approach another vehicle’s rear end without braking (distracted by a hot pedestrian perhaps?). In such situations, the brakes are pre-charged and if the driver still does not react, the S80 automatically deploys 50% of brake capacity to reduce collision impact.

Next up is Driver Alert Control and Lane Departure Warning. LDW, as its name suggests, keeps you within the lines, while DAC monitors driver consistency, waking up sleepy or dozing drivers with a coffee sign on the meter. Just like in the W212 E-Class, but DAC goes further by having a mobile phone style signal bar for your concentration levels that’s always on display. Rounding it all up is active bending lights.

I have a thing for modern Volvo cabins and really like S80′s warm and cocooning living quarters. There are small changes here, namely ambient lighting from the doors, “silk metal trim” and a new four-spoke steering wheel with a full circle of tasteful dark wood (not just the top and bottom parts). For the exterior, blink and you’ll miss the changes.

A larger iron mark on the grille, eyeliner, a chrome strip along the bottom of the doors and below the rear lights are the subtle tweaks. Two new colours are available – Ice White and Ember Black – the latter has embedded “gold flakes” for an orangey hue in certain light conditions.

So how much? The price is up by RM10,000 to RM295,000 OTR without insurance, a tiny increase considering the extras you get over the pre-facelift car. Live pictures from this morning’s event is after the jump.

Volvo introduces new five-pot diesel, upgrades T6 engine

Volvo has a new 2.0-litre five cylinder diesel powerplant for model year 2011. The 2.0D unit is new for the XC60 and XC70 and replaces the longstanding four-cylinder 134 bhp unit in the C30, S40, V50, C70, V70 and S80. In essence, the new diesel is based on the familiar 2.4-litre D5, but with reduced displacement from a shorter stroke for better fuel consumption. There are also piezo-electric fuel injectors for more efficient combustion. Available in various states of tune, the 2.0D can be had with a six-speed auto or manual.

As part of Volvo’s new engine nomenclature, all new engines will be badged based on power output. For example, the 148 bhp/350 Nm 2.0D in the C30, S40, V50 and C70 is named D3 while an uprated 175 bhp/400 Nm version of the same engine is labeled D4. In bigger cars like the S80, V70, XC70 and XC60 the 2.0D makes 161 bhp/400 Nm and is badged D3. The same format applies to the petrols, but with T instead of D.

Speaking of petrols, The T6 six-cylinder engine now offers 19 bhp and 40 Nm extra to make 304 bhp/440 Nm thanks to “reduction in internal friction”. Emissions have also been reduced.

Facelifted Volvo C30 makes its way into Malaysia

Volvo Car Malaysia has just launched the refreshed C30 for the local market. There are two models to choose from including the C30 2.0 and the top-of-the-line C30 T5 R-Design. The most noticeable difference is the restyled dynamic-looking front end that is also evident on other new Volvo’s such as the S60.

At the rear Volvo has replaced the black plastic panels with body colour in either the same or in contrasting colour. There are also two new wheel designs while the T5 R-Design variant gets dual chrome exhaust tailpipes. Volvo has also added a new Orange Flame Metallic body colour.

Improvements in the interior is mostly made up by a new ultra-thin centre stack that is finished in a new Oyster Burst Deco inspired by the surface texture of the classic Swedish Hagstrom guitar. There is also a new accessory styling kit that comprises of a fog lamp decor, a front skit-plate, side scuff plates with engraved C30 logo as well as a rear skid plate with an aluminum look.

The base 2.0 model is able to crank out 145hp and 185Nm of torque while the T5 R-Design features a 5-cylinder 2.5 litre engine that makes 230hp and a heathy 320Nm of torque. The former comes fitted with a 6-speed Powershift dual clutch transmission while the latter uses a 5-speed Geartronic.

True to Volvo’s nature the C30 also comes with a list of safety features. There is the Blind Spot Information system that alerts the driver if there is a vehicle in the Volvo’s blind spot, Dynamics Stablity Traction Control which is pretty much an electronic stability program, Active Dual-Xenon Bending lights that change the direction of the lights depending on steering angle and Adaptive Brake Lights which will flash all three brake lights (up to five flashes per second) if it detects a “panic braking” situation.

Pricing wise the C30 2.0 can be yours for RM215,000 (OTR without insurance) while the more powerful C30 T5 R-Design carries an RM259,000 (OTR without insurance) price tag.

Volvo XC90 D5 comes with extra trim for a limited time

Volvo is currently having a promotion for the diesel-powered Volvo XC90 D5 where for a limited time while stocks last, it’ll come standard with about RM40,000 worth of aesthetic accessories like 19 inch diamond-cut alloy wheels, a brushed metal design front bumper, XC Design running boards, a sports tail pipe and bright chrome trim around the windows.

Without the accessory package, standard wheels are 17 inchers. The D5 engine is mated to a 6-speed automatic transimssion to put the engine’s 185 hosepower and 400Nm of torque down to the wheels. Fuel consumption for the diesel is just 8.5 litres per 100km on the combined cycle.

The XC90 D5 goes for RM355K OTR without insurance, the same price as the 2.5T model but the 2.5T will not come with the accessories. It looks like pretty good value for a 7 seater with air conditioning and airbags for all three rows, especially when it has way smaller competitors at the RM300k mark, and its own stablemate the XC60 is going for between RM330k to RM360k.

Volvo V60 wagon caught in action without disguise!

With the launch of the new Volvo S60, a wagon version of the Swedish mid-sized exec was bound to happen, and here is it caught in action without much disguise except for blacked out emblems. This “V60″ looks very nice, and differs from previous Volvo estates in that it has a sharp rising shoulder line, which translates to a narrow glasshouse. In fact, the angle of the shoulder line looks even more acute than the S60 saloon’s; not sure then if this car will have an airy cabin.

The wagon’s front end is lifted directly from the saloon, which has a jutted out nose flanked by scuplted “boomerang” style shapes below the headlamps. The rear design meanwhile, looks like a flatter version of the XC60′s and comes with the SUV’s distinctive taillamp cluster with a curved LED bar inside.

Engine options should mirror the saloon’s, which includes a twin-scroll turbo 3.0-litre inline-six with 300 bhp and 440 Nm for the T6 and the new properly downsized 2.0-litre GDTi engine, which is good for 203 bhp and 300 Nm of torque from 1,750 to 4,000 rpm.

Head on to Inside Line to view the spyshots.

Wooden gear lever for Heico’s Volvo C70

Thonet, a furniture brand, showed off its first automotive part at the Geneva show: a gear shift lever. Done in cooperation with famous Volvo tuner Heico Sportiv and the Swedish carmaker itself, the launch took place in the exclusive ‘Volvo S60 Lounge’ which was completely fitted out by Thonet.

Jointly developed by Thonet and Heico, the gear lever represents a combination of tradition and modernity, harking back to Thonet’s longstanding tradition of wood manufacturing. The curved shape of the lever “conveys lightness and reflects the design language of the floating centre console”. Crafted from the fine oak, beech or walnut wood and hand made in an elaborate multi-stage process, it’s seen here in the refreshed Volvo C70, with interior fittings by Heico.

The Volvo C70 is a four-seat coupe convertible that sells from RM345,381 (for the 2.4i, T5 goes for RM400K) in Malaysia. It’s a full four seater with a three-piece steel roof that folds in 30 seconds, pretty long for today’s standards. Given a facelift late last year, the C70 now comes with Volvo’s new front end look, as seen on the XC60 and new S60, and a fresh design for the rear light cluster.

Volvo V50 2.0 Powershift Test Drive Report

Estates, or station wagons as they’re more commonly known here, appeal to a very small segment of buyers in Malaysia. Most associate them with hearses, but there are fans. I for one, love the idea of wagons even though I’m not married with kids or involved in business that requires lugging around goods; favourites include the B5 Audi RS4 Avant and Alfa 156 Sportwagon, cars which shapes I admire more than their saloon sisters.

Not many choices in this market if you’re after one, so the locally assembled Volvo V50 stands out as a sporty and classy European estate that’s relatively affordable. New for 2010 is a 2.0-litre engine and Powershift double-clutch gearbox replacing the old 2.4-litre five-pot. No change in price, but your RM185,950 will buy you more equipment than before. We see if it’s a compelling package.

Geely secures financing for Volvo purchase, scouting for Chinese production base

Chinese automaker Geely has managed to find USD 2.1 billion worth of financing and will seal an agreement with Ford for the acquisition of Volvo Car Corporation by the end of this month, according to reports. The capital was raised from unidentified financial institutions and local governments.

An AFP report said that Geely does not plan to move Volvo production of to China. Trade unions in Sweden are fearing job cuts at Volvo Cars, which has 16,000 staff on its payroll in the high cost Scandinavian country and 8,000 more across the globe.

At the same time, news sources from Hong Kong (where Geely is listed) say that the Hangzhou based company is selecting locations in China for Volvo production, with Beijing and Tianjin vying for the project. The reports add that Geely will set up a plant in China with a production capacity of about 300,000 vehicles annually, nearly doubling Volvo’s global output. This move is aimed to steer Volvo into profitability before 2011 through China’s lower manufacturing and labour costs. If this plan works, the fears of the well paid fatihfuls back in Gothenburg is very likely to turn into reality.

New Volvo S60 revealed ahead of Geneva

Used to seeing concepts watered down for production, we’re happy to see Volvo sticking to their guns for the new S60. The production version of Volvo’s mid-sized exec, revealed here ahead of its Geneva debut, looks remarkably similar to the S60 Concept the Swedish brand wheeled out at the 2009 Detroit show.

Among the distinctive cues carried over is the XC60 style front end, the wavy signature line on its profile and those inverted L-shaped taillamps, but the basic shape is recognisable as an S60. Volvo says that “the sculpted hood and the short overhangs front and rear also emphasize the sports-car feel.” We’re not sure about the “sports-car feel” but this S60 does have presence. It has grown is size too; longer, wider and with a longer wheelbase, but is less than 45kg heavier than the current car.

Engine choices include a twin-scroll turbo 3.0-litre inline-six with 300 bhp and 440 Nm. Paired to a new six-speed auto (faster shifts) and Haldex AWD, this S60 T6 does 0-60 mph (96 km/h) in 6.5 seconds. Of course following the common trend of ‘engine downsizing’, there will be a new 2.0-litre GDTi engine, which is good for 203 bhp and 300 Nm of torque from 1,750 to 4,000 rpm.

Three suspension setups will be available: Base, Dynamic and Four-C Adaptive. The optional Dynamic uses stiffer springs and bushings, retuned dampers and thicker piston rods, while Four-C adaptive damping aims to provide the best of all worlds.

On the safety front, Advanced Stability Control employs a new roll angle sensor to identify any skidding tendency at a very early stage. Also debuting is Pedestrian Detection with Full Auto Brake, which can detect pedestrians who walk into the road in front of the S60, warn the driver, before automatically apply full braking power if he/she does not respond in time. This system works at speeds up to 35 km/h. This is a development of City Safety, which works the same way, but for vehicles.
