We trust that you enjoyed our Indonesia International Motor Show 2012 coverage. It was a fruitful outing, and we got more than what we bargained for, especially with the surprise world debut of the facelifted Honda CR-Z in Jakarta. Also, Daihatsu brought along new metal and Subaru showed its Malaysian-made XV for the first time.

But for many, the IIMS post that set your pulse racing was Anthony’s lady gallery from yesterday night, a sumptuous 90-pic collection of IIMS showgirls. He’s very good at it, and had the ladies covered, but it was only right that I help with such a heavy burden :)

We’ve saved the best of the Indonesian International Motor Show 2012 for last, as usual, but the great news is that this post isn’t going to be the only one of its kind. Danny was also there at the JI Expo in Jakarta, and he’s got his own cache of photos to share, which he’ll proceed to do so sometime later today or tomorrow (update: he has, and it’s here).

The IIMS can’t be called a huge show, but it’s undoubtedly growing, as is its significance. Honda, which was expected to debut the facelifted CR-Z in Paris, pulled a massive surprise and gave the car its world premiere in Jakarta, and in doing so gave us the means to break the news globally, the very first English-language automotive publication to do so.

It also gave us the honour of being able to share our CR-Z photos and information with many significant publications worldwide. As far as scoops go, this one must surely rank as one of our best.

There was also the debut of the Toyota/Daihatsu twins, the Agya and Ayla, which should shape up as important players in the bustling city car segment in the country. Daihatsu also premiered the UFC Concept, as well as showcased the likes of the Sirion Sport and D-X and D-R concepts. Meanwhile, Subaru unveiled the Malaysian-assembled CKD Subaru XV 2.0i at the event, which runs until this Sunday, September 30.

But enough of that. We all know why you’re here on this particular post, and so we present to you part one of the girls of the IIMS 2012, the photos of which you’ll find after the jump. Like you need to be told, really.

Finally, we get to a Suzuki Ertiga trio of show vehicles that explore different possibilities with the MPV. The Japanese automaker has begun selling the seven-seater in Indonesia following its market debut in India earlier this year.

In the Indonesian market, the Ertiga is available in three trim levels, all working around a K14B 1.4 litre offering 95 PS at 6,000 rpm and 130 Nm of torque at 4,000 rpm, mated to a five-speed manual gearbox.

No mechanical changes for the three concepts, which are called the Luxury, Sporty and Crossover, so it’s all down to exterior bits to offer a different take on things. Each version features a distinct grille, as well as different front and rear bumper work.

Different wheel designs help the alteration further, and both the Crossover and Sport feature daytime running lights, though the array is more subdued on the Sport. No word on whether these will eventually become variants down the line, but it does showcase the dress-up potential.

A couple of quick news items to round off IIMS 2012. The first is about another Daihatsu vehicle, and this one is called the Luxio Quartett. The concept is based on the established Luxio MPV, which began selling in Indonesia three years ago, but where the production version seats seven, the Quartett offers space for exactly what its name implies.

Essentially, the second and third row seats in the 4.16 metre-long vehicle have been replaced with a couple of lounge chair-style leather seats, replete with a large centre console. There’s plenty of legroom for the two rear occupants, naturally. Exterior additions to the one-off Luxio include a bodykit, daytime running lights and upsized alloy wheels.

More news from the ongoing IIMS in Jakarta. This is Chevrolet’s new Spin MPV, which is one of the GM displays at the show.

The company didn’t reveal much about the vehicle, save that the compact 1.2 metric-tonne MPV will be sold in Indonesia in its seven-seater form from mid-2013. Production will begin at its 11-hectare Bekasi manufacturing facility in West Java from the middle of next year, and the company is targeting to sell 40,000 units in Indonesia annually.

Aimed at taking the fight to the likes of the Toyota Avanza and Xenia, the 4.36 metre-long Spin has a 2,620 mm-long wheelbase, and when it debuts, will be equipped with a six-speed auto transmission, a first in class.

In Brazil, where it is being sold, the Spin is available as a five- and seven-seater, in LT and LTZ trim level guise respectively. In that market, it wears a 1.8 litre Econo.Flex gasoline/ethanol mill, mated to a five-speed manual transmission.

Motor Image, the Subaru distributor for 10 countries in Asia, has for the first time unveiled the Malaysian-assembled Subaru XV. The car made its debut on the press day of the ongoing Indonesia International Motor Show (IIMS) 2012, and it’s a good preview of what Malaysia will get soon. The first batch of production XVs will roll out in December, and we’re looking at a January 2013 local launch.

Here’s the background. We broke the news back in July 2011 that Motor Image will assemble the Subaru XV at Tan Chong Motor Assemblies’ Segambut plant in KL, and besides local sales, will export the crossover to Indonesia and Thailand. The target is 5,000 to 6,000 units per year, shared between the three markets. Singapore isn’t in the picture because in that open market, it makes no sense (and cents) to bring in an ASEAN product over a Japanese-made XV.

The Malaysian-assembled XV is a significant product for both Fuji Heavy Industries (the maker of Subaru) and Tan Chong International (TCI, parent company of Motor Image), as Segambut is currently the only factory outside of Japan and USA producing Subarus. The CKD Subaru XV shown at IIMS, as well as the unit we (very) briefly sampled in Jakarta, are engineering trial units. Such units are used for evaluation by FHI and we’re told that the Japanese are pleased with the product and have approved it for production. So, the car you see in our pics is exactly what we’re going to get.

If you remember, we showed you the CBU Japan version of the XV at last year’s Bangkok show, mentioning that there will be some spec changes for ASEAN to lower the sticker price. Our speculation that the CKD XV will omit the sunroof, keyless entry/push start, colour LCD and HIDs has turned out to be true, although the Malaysian-made car is not sparsely equipped by any means.

The fancy full-colour screen has been replaced by a single-strip display, while our XV makes do manual-leveling halogen lamps. No factory audio, but a 2-DIN colour touch screen ICE system will be linked to the factory steering controls. It may not necessarily be the exact same Kenwood unit shown here, though.

The leather-wrapped wheel (tilt and telescopic) also comes with cruise control buttons and paddle shifters. The dashboard is moulded from soft plastics that one can bury fingernails in, as per the CBU car. The door caps are less yielding, but pass the knuckle rap test. Three airbags will be standard – driver, front passenger and driver’s knee. ISOFIX, ABS, EBD, Brake Assist and Vehicle Dynamics Control (VDC) are standard.

The raised crossover, which has a high ground clearance of 220 mm, is powered by Subaru’s latest “FB” boxer engine. This naturally aspirated DOHC 16-valve flat-four makes 150 PS and 196 Nm of torque at 4,200 rpm. Paired to Subaru’s Lineartronic CVT gearbox with manual selection, this drivetrain is shared with the rest of the current-gen Impreza family, launched last year in Japan. It’s not a Subaru without Boxer and Symmetrical AWD, so the latter feeds drive permanently to all four wheels.

The XV’s suspension consists of front McPherson struts and rear double-wishbones. The brakes are discs all round, but ventilated at the front. Those distinctive alloys, as seen on the CBU car, are 17-inch items, wrapped with 225/55 rubber.

Nothing new to report in terms of driving experience, since we only tried it on a slalom course lasting few minutes. Response and pick-up off the line is far from blazing (getting that blue turbo monster with gold wheels out of your mind is a must) but decent. At low speeds, the XV didn’t roll as much as I would have expected, considering its height. The driving position is nice – the seat goes low enough and the wheel adjusts for reach.

“With increased affordability while maintaining the quality and standards that’s comparable to the Japan imported version, we expect the XV to put Subaru on everyone’s shopping list when they are lookng for a SUV. I’m very confident that many people will like it, give us a chance,” urged Motor Image boss Glenn Tan.

“The unveiling of the Subaru XV is an important milestone in enhancing our growth in the ASEAN region. The partnership with FHI has provided us with the ability to rapidly scale up on Motor Image’s presence in the region through making investments in our network and building long term relationships based on the superior quality of the Subaru brand and a consistently high level of service to customers,” he added.

Speaking of service, Motor Image plans to have 23 sales and distribution outlets in Malaysia by the end of 2013, up from the current 11. “We intend to go all out to build the brand. Over the next six months very exciting things will be happening and we’ll make sure you’ll really hear us,” Tan added.

The CKD XV’s price benchmark is the market leading Honda CR-V, so expect a figure of around RM150k on the sticker. Full gallery after the jump.

Yes, back to a more familiar sight – also spotted at the Daihatsu stand at IIMS was a bright yellow Sirion Sport concept, all decked out to captivate the young (and young at heart). The Sirion, as everyone already knows, is the Perodua Myvi for the Indonesian market, and the car was launched to much fanfare at last year’s edition of the show.

This year, things are undoubtedly quieter for the car, but PT Astra Daihatsu has decided to inject some life into the hatch and come up with a treatment that should get the bells ringing for modders. A prominent front bumper lip kicks things off, and side panel stickers unabashedly tell you what version it is. New alloys, replete with yellow edge lining, help things along.

Inside, the yellow theme continues, with splashes of the shade to be found on the door cards, seats, and even the steering wheel – which is a three-spoke sports type unit – gets a yellow accent line. The dash centre console features a bright silver finish, and sports pedals are to be seen, as are a couple of large tweeter units on the dashboard.

Surely befitting of an Extreme tag, PT Astra says that the Sirion Sport can be viewed as a spirited young best friend for youths, being active, dynamic, flexible and tough. I suppose it can.

Some other Daihatsu news from IIMS. Not new, and certainly not a debut, but worth a mention all the same. The automaker certainly pulled out all the stops for the 2012 Indonesian International Motor Show, not just showcasing its new Ayla 1.0 litre eco-car and the UFC Concept, but also brought out a couple of other concepts first seen in Tokyo last year.

The D-X – or D-Cross – and D-R Concepts were part of the display inventory, and though not centre stage items, received their fair share of attention. Both roadster studies are powered by a 660 cc two-cylinder turbocharged engine, and offer different takes on the open-top approach.

The rugged D-X may be the flashier and eye-catching of the two, but there’s a quiet elegance about the D-R, which features two interchangeable body “styles,” either stylish or more dynamic, through the use of removable resin-based exterior panels. There are no plans to get either into production, but isn’t it time for a new Copen, which is now history?

This funky-looking people mover is called the Daihatsu Ultra Functional Compact (UFC) Concept, and it’s another debutant at the ongoing IIMS in Jakarta.

It’s a six-seater study that Astra Daihatsu Motor says it has taken the lead in developing, using Daihatsu’s expertise in compact cars. But while designed along the lines of a compact, the B-pillarless vehicle features a large interior and a versatile seating arrangement.

In this case, both the second row and third row seats are fully electrically-powered and adjustable, in the sense that the second row units can slide forward to the point that they can be “stacked” directly behind the front row seats, and the slightly-raised third row seatbacks can fold down, offering a high degree of functionality and cavernous cargo space, if so desired.

Elswhere, rear sliding doors offer ease of ingress and egress. Aside from all this, there’s no mention of any specific details, like what powertrain the UFC has, nor are any figures touted. Reports hint that the exterior lines of the study might be how the next-generation Xenia people mover – currently in the market – or the Avanza will shape up, and that a production version should be a seven-seater. Maybe we’ll see it come to fruition next IIMS.

The Daihatsu Ayla’s twin, the Toyota Agya, also made its debut at IIMS earlier today. Like the Ayla, the same three-cylinder 1KR-FE 1.0 litre mill – despite the fancier engine code used by Daihatsu for its unit – powers the car, and output figures are identical.

The Agya is available in three variant forms, the medium Grade E, high Grade G and the TRD S. Exterior-wise, the Grade G features a chrome grille and door handles, side protective moulding as well as a sporty rear spoiler to help differentiate it from the E.

As for the TRD S version, it gets dressed up with an aerokit (front and rear splitters, side skirts) and TRD S stickers and emblem. Like the Ayla, six exterior colour choices abound.

Inside, both the TRD S and Grade G models get the works – a 2-DIN head unit with USB and aux input, with plenty of chrome finish trim to be found. In the kit list are electric power steering, a multi-function display and dual airbags.

The Agya features a front disc/rear drum brake system, and the TRD S and G wear 14-inch alloys with 175/65 rubbers, while the E is shod with 13-inch steel wheels and 155/80 profile tyres.

Other numbers are a 180 mm ground clearance (presumably the same for the Ayla) and a 33 litre capacity fuel tank. And like the Ayla, transmission choices are a five-speed manual or four-speed auto.

The start of the Indonesia international Motor Show saw the arrival of the Daihatsu Ayla hatchback, as well as that of its Toyota sibling, the Agya. The two debutants are set to go head to head against the Mitsubishi Mirage, which also made its Indonesian debut at the show.

We’ll start with the Ayla – the five-door hatch, the company says, has been designed to meet the needs of car users in the country, working on the basis of being fuel efficient, spacious and affordable. If the shape looks a bit familiar, that’s because you’ve seen a mix of its lines on the Daihatsu A-Concept seen in last year’s IIMS as well as the e:S Mira. The Ayla is based on the e:S Mira.

There weren’t any specifications mentioned in the overall show brochure beyond stating that the little car – which measures in at 3,580 mm long, 1,600 mm wide and 1,510 mm tall – punches above its weight, offering a comfortable and spacious cabin, a minimum turning radius for easy maneouvreability in narrow streets and a high ground clearance “best suited to the way in Indonesia.”

Nothing a bit of digging around couldn’t solve. The Ayla is powered by a 997cc three-cylinder mill, the D26F-1KR-DE. The 69 kg aluminium-block unit, which is 10 kg lighter than the 1.0 litre cast-iron block equivalent, offers 65 hp at 6,000 rpm and a rather low-ish 87 Nm of twist at 3,600 rpm. As for drivetrain choices, it’s a five-speed manual and a four-speed auto for this little five-seater.

Three variants of the Ayla will go on sale in the Indonesian market, the entry-level Type D, medium specification Type M and range-topping Type X.

When they mean entry-level, they do mean entry-level – the Type D comes without air-conditioning and an audio system, to give you an idea of how affordable means omitting some of the mod-cons. It does mean however that the Ayla can be had for as low as Rp 75 million (RM24,100). Local content is claimed to be 84% for the car (and likewise, the Agya). As for colours, there are six choices on call for the car, three metallic and three solid.

The arrival of the little car does throw some conjecture about, especially with regards to Malaysia’s position as the perceived passenger car center for ASEAN.

For the longest time, Toyota/Daihatsu Indonesia (or Astra Toyota/Daihatsu, if you will) didn’t really sell passenger-style cars, working the beat with more “commercial-based” offerings like the Avanza and Innova. Daihatsu didn’t bother building the Sirion in Indonesia, instead importing Myvis from here and slapping on Daihatsu badging on them.

But the change is coming, and how – we first saw signs of this with the A-Concept, and now production of Toyota/Daihatsu passenger cars is concentrated in Thailand and Indonesia. The Japanese automaker has signalled its intent for Indonesia, stating that it aims to launch more than four models in the next four years as well as produce 300,000 units a year here.

Which leads to the question – has Perodua failed to grab an opportunity to be the small passenger green car hub for Toyota/Daihatsu in the region? The Ayla and Agya show that this might very well be the case, and we might also well be looking at the new Viva-replacement.

Greetings from Jakarta, where we are reporting live from the Indonesia International Motor Show at the JI Expo. There have been a number of debuts, but none as big as this – Honda has given the facelifted CR-Z its world premiere at the show. The hybrid was expected to debut in Paris next week.

External revisions to the car include a newly-designed front grille and front bumper, as well as reworked fog lamps. Elsewhere, there are also new HID head lights, rear LED combination lamps, door mirrors, rear diffuser and a new 17-inch alloy wheel.

Interior changes are made up of a new two-tone black and red fabric for the seats, while the instrument panel tachometer now illuminates in three different backlight colours (blue, red and green), depending on the mode chosen (Normal, Sport and ECON). Aside from this, there is the inclusion of a new Plus Sport System, where the engine and motor offers a more performance-oriented response, switchable through a S+ button. The car was locked, so unfortunately there are no shots of the interior to be had.

The Indonesian press release lists the power output of the 1.5 litre i-VTEC engine on the updated car as 120 PS at 6,600 rpm for the six-speed manual and 118 PS for the CVT, and adds that the 100-volt IMA motor offers 20 PS.

However, in hybrid systems, total system output doesn’t exactly work by adding combustion and electric motor numbers, which in this case would be 140 PS and 138 PS respectively. The CR-Z facelift’s new total output number is now 135 PS at 6,600 rpm and 172 Nm from 1,000 rpm to 3,000 rpm for the CVT, while the six-speed manual model does 136 PS at 6,600 rpm and 190 Nm between 1,000 rpm to 2,000 rpm. Comparatively, the current car has 124 PS and 174 Nm.

Safety kit includes ABS, EBD and brake assist, VSA, active headrests, dual front airbags as well as side airbags with OPDS (occupant postion detection sensor) and side curtain airbags.

Two new colours debut alongside the car, Premium Northern Lights Violet (the tone as seen on the teaser image recently) and Premium Energetic Yellow Pearl, which is the colour of the debutant. It will also be available in White Pearl, Crystal Black and Milano Red.

In Indonesia, the new CR-Z is slated to make its market debut in February next year.
