Here’s one final post from the Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show (GIIAS) 2016 show. For some, it’s the one you’ve been waiting for. But first, let me explain why we (photographer Sherman Sim, motorcycle man Mohan K Ramanujam and myself) were at ASEAN’s largest motor show.
Although it’s growing strongly, Indonesia is not a rising star of the ASEAN auto market – it is the largest car market in our region. Last year, auto sales breached the one million mark, and auto association Gaikindo expects total industry volume to increase by 5% this year, to 1.05 million units. This is against a backdrop of a sluggish global economy, which has impacted export-oriented ASEAN countries such as ours. Read more on the Indonesian auto industry here.
Like the market, the show is becoming more important each year. The 2016 edition, which is ongoing for the public, is hosting a world debut for the Mitsubishi XM Concept that previews an upcoming SUV-flavoured contender to the Toyota Avanza and Honda Mobilio in the Low MPV segement.
But without a doubt, the MPVs of the moment are the Toyota Calya and Daihatsu Sigra twins, making their show debut at GIIAS. The seven-seater Low Cost Green Car (LCGC) duo, made by PT Astra Daihatsu locally, slots in beneath the Avanza/Xenia with prices starting from just RM32k.
Honda rolled out a couple of special editions of popular models such as the HR-V Mugen and Jazz RS CVT Special Edition, but the star of the stand was the Civic Hatchback Prototype, which has made it to production largely unaltered. Coming to ASEAN perhaps?
Coming to Malaysia in the near future is the Kia Grand Sedona a.k.a. Grand Carnival, which was launched at GIIAS with a 3.3 litre petrol V6 engine. Another Korean model that made its local debut is the Hyundai i20, although that B-segment five-door hatch rival to the Jazz won’t be coming to Malaysia.
We also showed you pics of the souped-up Toyota Avanza Veloz Tigre, carbon-rich and V8-powered Lexus RC F, the cute JDM Daihatsu Cast Activa kei-car and a striking Mercedes-AMG A45 in Elbaite Green. Not breaking news, but all are interesting sights that complete a motor show.
There were some interesting two-wheelers in BSD City too, led by the CBR250RR, Honda’s very fresh replacement for the CBR250R in the quarter-litre sports category. Mohan also laid his eyes on a couple of new Ducatis making their local debuts, the Royal Enfield Himalayan, the Suzuki Satria F150 “Belang” replacement and a range of Russian sidecars from Ural.
