IIMS: Daihatsu A-Concept – by Indonesia, for the world

IIMS: Daihatsu A-Concept – by Indonesia, for the world

Daihatsu has unveiled its latest concept car at the 2011 Indonesian International Motor Show – the Daihatsu A-Concept, which includes the involvement of Indonesians with the support of Daihatsu Japan.

After learning the name of the concept car from the scale model we photographed and featured earlier today, we had initially thought that the letter A in the name meant an A-segment vehicle. While this could still be (or not be) the fact, the official explanation for the letter A is that it represents the first letter in the alphabet and thus signifies the start of a new life for Indonesian society.

IIMS: Daihatsu A-Concept – by Indonesia, for the world

According to PT Astra Daihatsu Motor president Sudirman MR, there are currently a group of personnel from his company transferred to Japan for the purpose of knowledge transfer, covering various fields from car design down to production.

And there’s also the fact that Sudirman MR has been recently appointed to the board of directors of Daihatsu Motor Company, firmly cementing Indonesia’s importance in Daihatsu’s plans for the future. Indonesia is being used as the launch (and possibly production) hub for this car, much like India was the center for the concept and production of the Suzuki A-Star/Alto.

IIMS: Daihatsu A-Concept – by Indonesia, for the world

This car may very well be a preview for the upcoming affordable and economical car capable of 30km/l that Daihatsu plans to launch. Or it may be not, but from the way the car was presented, this is something that Daihatsu really wants to put into production.

We are guessing that Daihatsu Japan will be introducing the next generation Mira this September, since it has already been five years since the current generation was launched (end 2006). Daihatsu is likely to style the new JDM Mira according to quirky Japanese tastes, but perhaps the design of this A-Concept will be used to create an ASEAN/world version of the car, just like how there is a separate JDM Passo/Boon design for Japan and a Myvi/Sirion design for Malaysia and Indonesia.

Look after the jump for a full photo gallery of the A-Concept.

  • We, Malaysia lost everything now. Under IMV, Indonesia take Innova mpv and Avanza mpv; while Thailand handle both SUV and SUT.

Now Thai added passenger car and small car under their portfolio while Indonesia added Daihatsu small car, and the Philippines, producing Ford.

If you think Indonesia not promising investment venue and economic future, think again!

Najib cabinet should do something concrete not merely lipstick service to drive Malaysia back to right track of economy.

1Malaysia tak boleh lihat sahaja tanpa melakukan apa-apa yang konrit bagi kemajuan ekonomi.

and sometimes it’s not because of gov. companies are doing business, and they choose thai and indo over malaysia because the market size is bigger (malaysia is almost saturated), more supply of cheap labour (salary for honda workers in thai is cheaper than china), and cheap land for them to build their factories. if they’re looking for stable economy and rich countries, they would choose singapore, but is that a wise decision? if they produce cars in large number (hundreds of thousands yearly), they would try to keep the production cost down, and Malaysia is not a low-cost country.
i would prefer we develop own tech, become more like japanese and koreans and proudly say ‘malaysian brand, produced in malaysia and exported globally’ rather than thai.. made in thai but there’s no sense of belonging to the cars, because they only build the cars, but all owned by japanese.

you can drive a potong car, because of reality(money), but you should not always twist and turn the words and make protectionism sounds like a proper thing to do.

anyway, proton and perodua is now slowly gearing to a more open market.

an inspira for rm88k, can you believe it? how much is the perdana last time? did perdana discount?

so, i can see proton and perodua is preparing themselves. time for myvi to drop price.

      • Are suggesting that Japanese or even Korean wages CHEAPER than Malaysia? You know that Malaysia gave free tax holiday up to 12 years to hi-tech material LAMP Lynas?

The conclusion: If you still buying whatever good news over our economy from TV3 and the likes, sooner rather than later we’ll losing to our neighbors, bro.

Our archaic auto and industrial policy must go. In a country when democratic demonstration was deemed illegal despite against basic human right and deportation of prominent attorney from one of top OECD nation and the whim and fancy of the authority of immigration (the same agency was too lenient when it comes to de-illegal of illegal immigrants up to no respect from illegal immigrants to use proper way to enter Malaysia since easier to use illegal path almost guaranteed “pemutihan”).

This country must made a favorite sensible destination of beneficial industry unlike controversial Lynas. When world opted for lesser dependence on nuke energy we’re opposite. Corruption is better than yesterday? Free mainstream media?

This also will affect our chance to be industries favorite choice.

karl, i do not want to touch other topic rather than auto related stuffs.
tax rebate or tax free period has been given to numerous companies setting up in Malaysia, especially from which we may gain technology know-how. remember MSC initiative in late 1990’s? many multinational companies with MSC status get tax free for few years. now, the same incentives were given to bio-tech, and renewable energy sectors such as solar panel R&D in penang.
now, why would gov give tax free for car companies to build assembly plants here if there’s no R&D? oh yeah.. we’ll get more companies like Perodua and Naza which could only redesign bumpers and new logo. isn’t that great?

Like or Dislike: Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0
      • Developing own tech is good but not in the current trend anymore. Smaller companies (in this case proton) will have to rely on technology sharing. If Proton does share your mindset of stubbornly producing own tech, this company is sure doomed (joy of others of couse).

I dun really need to proudly say “Malaysian Brand, Produced in Malaysia, Exported Globally”. What Malaysian needs are safer and worthy/value cars for the people and not simply some ignorant Pride, one of the deadly seven sins.

Luckily for Proton, the recent news of CVT and ABS makes me feel better about them.

We used to have biggest auto market than Indonesia and Thailand since the 90s till recently. But more than 50% of car sold is belong to our national car, so the market wise isn’t big for foreign car maker anymore. In this past 20years, foreign automaker had built their plant in our neighbour country.

Mainly because their auto policy didnt state after you totally built/manufacture a car in a country you still need to pay hillalous duty and tax. What for you spend billion to invest a country that doesn’t allow to sold the local-make product in the country with lower price but still same price as CKD(assembly) vehicle?

Why shall we proud of our national car? Out of average yearly production of 300,000+ unit, more than 90% are sold in our own Malaysian market. Even exported to global market it’s only a few unit like Chery or Chana vehicle on our road. Would we give a damn to this 2 brand?

“i would prefer we develop own tech, become more like japanese and koreans and proudly say ‘malaysian brand, produced in malaysia and exported globally”

Dream on dude, until as what Idris Jala said, our nation will become bankrupt in 2019 if one of the causes of bankruptcy is NAP policy that protect the cronies and those well-connected with corridor of power at Putrajaya.

Our own tech, at best shown by Proton is crap Cam-tak-Pro under-power engine. Why do a U-turn by rebadge Lancer as Inspira? Why we need to proudly say “malaysian brand”? Jap, Euro or US never said it is their national brand, but clobal iconic trademark like VW, Airbus, Facebook, Toyota, Google, Honda, Coca-cola, etc, you name it they got it. Do Jimmy Choo or Zang Toi brand is considered as Malaysia brand despite the creator is from Malaysia? I think you are the balls-licker of cronies! Why we need to “national” status for-this-and-that of our products, if good, then go for international status like Selangor Pewter, Lat Cartoon, etc without the need of protection from gov.

NAP causing bankruptcy? Proton was established to reduce import and our dependency to foreign products. Thailand used to banned import cars in 1980s to reduce their trade deficit. carmakers have to build factories in thai to sell their car there. u only see low price of cars made in thai, but price of imported cars in thai is higher than malaysia.
we used to be biggest exporter of raw materials such as tin and rubber, but later we import processed metal and tyres at higher cost. because of local auto industries, we have all factories producing many parts locally and has reduced imports. how much is locally produced parts? and how much is imported ones? proton and perodua has helped to stabilize our economy.
from your example, america didn’t take ownership of GM and Chrysler? so, why would they protect GM by injecting trillions of dollars into the car industry during recession? let’s see if Japan hit by recession, would they help their auto industries too…? it’s different in the UK where their auto companies only producing cars in thousands of units in a year. they wouldn’t care less about jaguar, lotus, caterham or any other exotic brands because if they collapse, the impact on their economy is very little. they’re just some nice brands to have, but u could still live without it.
for facebook, google, or coca-cola.. if these companies collapse, maybe they wont affect so much on the country economy as a whole like auto industries do.

how i wish that every other companies that setup factories in malaysia wouldnt have to pay those unnecessary taxes… the american govt helped to save GM and Chrysler by injecting trillions but dont control taxes on other makes just to protect their own brand…p1 & p2 are just a bunch of pampered babies…

nahh.. this will go round & round again. how many babies out there are not pampered? that’s human nature, always protecting their own.
and you say honda, toyota, hyundai are not protected? GM, Chrysler and Ford were kicked out from Japan after Japanese decided they want to build their own cars. in Korea, foreign brand are not allowed, unless you have JV with local companies, hence we see Renault-Samsung, and Kia doing assembly for GM. are they not pampered babies once?
