VIDEO: Lexus CT 200h “Dark Ride” viral ad campaign

Lexus is pulling out all the stops to promote its new hybrid hatchback – the CT 200h. Making the car look like a star is vital in creating appeal, and with the Dark Ride viral ad campaign, Lexus follows the footsteps of Audi and famously BMW with its “The Hire” series of short films featuring celebs like Madonna and Clive Owen. No human stars for Lexus though; the car is the only star.

“With ‘Dark Ride’ we are creating a unique virtual test drive opportunity so consumers can experience this hybrid, that is like no other, months before it is available at dealerships in early 2011. In it, consumers play a co-starring role as the fun-to-drive Lexus CT 200h is put through its paces. By guiding the driver and the CT through a series of adventures, customers will be exposed to ‘The Darker Side of Green,’ which is completely different than the way hybrids are usually portrayed,” explains Lexus marketing VP Dave Nordstrom.

Based on the LF-Ch concept, the much toned down CT 200h is a Golf sized five-door hatch powered by a 1.8-litre VVT-i petrol engine with an electric motor.

VIDEO: What is MIROS and the MyVAP crash test rating?

When we first heard of MIROS, many of us questioned the rationale of the government’s move in setting up yet another crash test rating here in Malaysia. MIROS operates the MyVAP rating system and the first two cars which received MyVAP ratings are the Exora and the Alza, which both scored 4 stars on MIROS. But what exactly is MIROS? Did you know that MyVAP crash test ratings for now are not based on MIROS crash tests but instead rely on MIROS evaluating the crash test data supplied by the car manufacturer? Last night on Driven we had a full feature on MIROS – watch it in the video above. Head on to Driven’s website to watch the full episode as well as previous episodes.

Audi’s “The Next Big Thing” Audi A1 mini-series

Looking at pretty photos of a car is really nice but seriously nothing beats watching a car in full motion action. BMW’s The Hire short clips was the talk of the town during its time and people still refer to them every now and then these days and I won’t deny that the Madonna short movie played a part in making me fall for the E39.

Now Audi is following the same footsteps with a 6 part mini-series featuring Justin Timberlake, Dania Ramirez and the Audi A1. The mini-series is called The Next Big Thing and is directed by Swedish filmmaker Henrik Sundgren.

You will be able to find the first episode above, and the rest will be released every Tuesday every week for the next 5 weeks. We’ll be featuring each episode on this blog.

Connect your Blackberry to BMW iDrive – coming soon!

I knew this was definitely coming sooner or later – you will soon be able to read your Blackberry push emails on your BMW’s iDrive. This has nothing to do with Blackberry maker RIM buying the QNX operating system that iDrive is based on. Instead, iDrive is accessing the emails on the Blackberry using the Bluetooth Message Access Profile feature.

You can watch a quick video walkthrough of the system in the video above. iDrive can even read out the text of your email so you can still “listen” to your email while you are driving. So it looks like the next time Auto Bavaria has Celcom Blackberry promotions (they’ve had it before with the Blackberry Storm), it might just be pre-setup to work with your BMW’s iDrive!

Ken Block’s specialised Gymkhana Ford Fiesta

Click for enlarged image

Internet phenomenon Ken Block’s new Ford Fiesta (his second after his Fiesta rally car) is no regular Fiesta. The Fiesta will be used in the filming of Gymkhana THREE, Ken Block’s latest video. It can get to 100km/h in just 2 seconds, which is some seriously insane acceleration.

This is thanks to a purpose-built Olsbergs engine capable of up to 850 brake horsepower, but is restricted to 650 horsepower in order to give Block the torque band he needs to control the car, which by the way peaks at 4,000rpm with a grand total of 895Nm. This engine is mated to an Olsbergs MSE Maktrak (magnesium) six-speed paddle-shift sequential transmission.

All of these mods are in order to turn the Fiesta into a specialist ‘Gymkhana’ car, where you have to maneuver around a series of cones, slaloms, 180-degree, 360-degree, figure-8 turns and other obstacles all while utilizing extreme acceleration, braking and sliding.

“Aside from gobs of usable power, the real trick in setting up the Gymkhana Ford Fiesta was building a car for tarmac that handles as if it’s on gravel. While most tarmac race cars are designed to grip, we need a car that will still react quickly, but handle loose, while still providing complete control; this is a very delicate balance,” said Block.

Look after the jump for a short preview video of Gymkhana THREE.

Ford SYNC AppLink – in-car voice control for phone apps?

Ford’s SYNC is getting a new feature to debut on the 2011 Fiesta and its called the SYNC AppLink. It basically allows you to use the Fiesta’s voice control feature to control apps on your smart phone. But no, iPhones are not supported, probably because SYNC is built on Microsoft software. But AppLink will definitely talk to your Blackberry and your Android phone as those are the two app platforms it supports.

And of course not all apps are supported – the apps have to talk to the Sync app installed onto the phone and at launch time, three apps will support this – Pandora internet radio, Stitcher internet radio and OpenBeak, a Twitter client formerly known as TwitterBerry.

“The growth in smartphone mobile apps has been explosive, and Ford has worked hard to respond at the speed of the consumer electronics market. SYNC is the only connectivity system available that can extend that functionality into the car. AppLink will allow drivers to control some of the most popular apps through SYNC’s voice commands and steering wheel buttons, helping drivers keep their hands on the wheel and eyes on the road,” says Ford Connected Services director Doug VanDagens.

Look after the jump for demos of SYNC AppLink working.
