What is an anti-lag or misfiring system?

I’m sure some of you have heard of anti-lag systems or sometimes known as misfiring systems, thanks to anime like Initial D. You might have noticed that most of the cars have flames coming out of their exhaust when they shift gears. If you’ve watched Top Gear’s review on the Prodrive P2, you will see that the P2 has it too. That’s a misfiring system in action. Let’s just call it anti-lag from now on. So what does anti-lag do?

Proton Satria Neo Handling Demonstration

Proton Satria Neo

These videos demonstrating the handling capabilities of the Proton Satria Neo are thanks to “Wajakuat” who originally hosted them on Youtube. I’ve put them on my server for faster loading speeds. There are three videos, one with the Proton Satria Neo 1.6, one with the Proton Satria Neo 1.3, and the last one is a Proton Waja with a turbocharged Lancer Evolution engine complete with a 4WD drivetrain.

Smart ForTwo Crash Test

450_smartfortwo.jpg

Ever wonder how the Smart ForTwo would fare in a car accident? Sure the car looks small and fragile, but apparently it has good passenger protection because of it’s Safety Cell unibody. An independant German team did an experiment, orchestrating a simple head-on collision between a Smart ForTwo and a Mercedes Benz S-Class to see what would happen. What I really want to see though is a collision between a Smart ForTwo and an SUV. Video after the jump.

Top Gear Prodrive P2

Top Gear tries out the Prodrive P2, Prodrive’s first entirely self-developed car using a Subaru Impreza turbocharged flat-four engine. The Prodrive P2 went from concept to a full working model in only 9 months. It’s a 2 seater, and features all wheel drive. The boxer engine gives it good power figures of 349PS and 575Nm of torque for a 1100kg car. And something I didn’t know, the Prodrive P2 was actually based on the Subaru R1 chassis. Check the video out after the jump!

Do you remember the Toyota Aygo football match? Top Gear actually took a few Toyota Aygos and used them in a field to play football with a huge blown up football. This is something else altogether - we see Top Gear pitch the Japanese against the Germans in this car football match between the Toyota Aygo and the Volkswagen Fox. In the spirit of the world cup, video is after the jump!

BMW Extreme Testing Technology

small_bmw_logo.jpgThis is amazing. This is a video of BMW’s extreme testing innovations. For a producer of cars so packed with technology, it’s only normal for their testing procedures to be highly advanced too. They actually have a Nurburgring track test simulator, which allows a BMW being tested to experience the trials of the Nurburgring track without actually having to be there. There’s also a room where ultraviolet light is used to test the car’s hardiness against the harsh sun. This ultraviolet light is so intense that it could give you a sunburn in 3 minutes.

One of the most important things is testing, testing, testing, to produce quality in the hands of our customers. The quality really depends on the R&D process. It starts at the R&D process. You cannot produce quality at the end of the production line.” - Anton Ruf, BMW Head of Technical Integration.

If you have a BMW, it will really make you appreciate the work and effort that went into the vehicle that justifies it’s premium price tag. A highly recommended watch.
