Ford’s turbocharged direct injection EcoBoost

EcoBoostThe brand name TwinForce has been dropped for a new name called EcoBoost, which encompasses a far wider range of engines than just the twin turbocharged V6 we knew as the TwinForce. (click image to enlarge)

The EcoBoost family includes inline-4 and V6 engines. It uses a combination of direct injection and turbocharging to improve fuel efficiency. Ford group vice president of Global Product Development says customers can expect to recoup their initial investment in a 4-cylinder EcoBoost engine through fuel savings in approximately 30 months. A diesel will take an average of seven and one-half years, while the cost of a hybrid will take nearly 12 years to recoup. This is based on costs in the US.

The first EcoBoost product will be introduced in the Lincoln MKS, and this will be the 3.5 litre twin turbocharged V6 unveiled earlier. The force inducted V6 produces the same amount of power as a V8 engine, but it has a much nicer torque curve – 461Nm of torque from 2,000rpm to 5,000rpm, compared to a normally aspirated 4.6 litre V8 that only makes between 366Nm to 420Nm over the same rev range.

Ford picked the EcoBoost brand over TwinForce because the primary use of the technology is for fuel economy and emissions. It was worried consumers would associate the brand TwinForce with power instead.

W204 C-Class scores 5 stars in Euro NCAP

W204 Crash Test

The new W204 Mercedes-Benz C-Class now has an Euro NCAP score – 5 stars, thanks to its 7 airbags, seatbelt tensioners, belt-force limiters, and NECK PRO head restraints – all fitted as standard items on the European spec C-Class.

Of course, the body structure also plays an important part in the survivability of the passengers – crumple zones and such. 70% of the Mercedes-Benz C-Class’s body panels are made from state-of-the-art, high-strength steel alloys that minimise weight and maximise safety. Quadruple-skinned B-pillars and the side members absorb the bulk of any side-impact forces and channel these forces into the body structure, are made partially from ultra-high-strength, hot-formed high-tech steel.

Renault Clio Sport Tourer

Renault Clio Sport Tourer

The Renault Clio Sport Tourer based on the Clio III is one of the most compact estate cars on the market. It has the same wheelbase as the hatchback at 2,575mm but has a 216mm longer rear overhang because of its estate rear.

The 439 litre boot can be extended to 1277mm when you fold the split fold rear seats down. The shape of the rear bumper and the low sill height of 581mm allows easy boot access with no protuberances. The boot has a removable floor flap, which when removed increases boot space by a further 72 litres.

Three petrol engines and three diesel engines are available. The baseline petrol units is a 75 horsepower 1.2 litre 16 valve. This is the manual model – when equipped with a robotized manual transmission (similiar to our Savvy AMT) the engine is tuned up to produce 80 horsepower. Next in line is a 100 horsepower 1.2 litre 16V turbocharged engine, with a peak torque of 145Nm at 3,000rpm. I wonder if somehow someone could stuff this engine into a Savvy. The top of the range gasoline in a 1.6 litre 16V with 110 horsepower and 151Nm of torque at 4,250rpm.

Oil burners are all 1.5 litre DCi engines in different stages of tune – 70 horsepower with 160Nm of torque, 85 horsepower with 200Nm of torque and 105 horsepower with 240Nm of torque.

Jaguar XF wins 2007 Autocar Design Award

Jaguar XF

The beautiful new Jaguar XF has snagged the Design Award at the 2007 Autocar Awards at The Royal Horticultural Halls in London on 11th November.

“This is the first time Jaguar has won this highly respected Autocar award for a production car and I’m absolutely thrilled it has been given to the new XF. It’s wonderful to receive recognition for our efforts within the industry and from our ultimate critics – the motoring media,” said Ian Callum, Jaguar’s design director.

“What most impressed Autocar’s judging panel is Jaguar’s success in producing a car that looks elegant, graceful and ‘Jaguar-like’. This is a car, we believe, of which Sir William Lyons, founder of Jaguar would thoroughly have approved,” said Chas Hallett, Editor of Autocar.

Good news for Malaysians is that the first units are expected to reach Malaysian shores in mid-2008.

Volkswagen Touareg V10 pulls a jumbo jet

Volkswagen Touareg TDI Towing 747-200

While we’re on the topic of turbodiesel Touaregs, remember that story about how a Volkswagen Touareg V10 TDI pulled a specially modified Boeing 747-200? Well, I found a video of the event as well as a decent reenactment.

The plane is not a real 747-200, but a specially modified version called the 747-XXX and it was built for use as a prop in the James Bond film Casino Royale. The plane has had its two outer engines replaced with outboard wing tanks, and its inner engines has been replaced with mocked-up dual pylon-mounted engine pods under each wing.

So while this plane isn’t really as heavy as a real 747-200 ready to fly, it’s still a decent feat. Watch the video after jump.

Chevrolet Captiva unveiled in Malaysia

Chevrolet Captiva

Hicom-Chevrolet Sdn Bhd unveiled the Chevrolet Captiva‘s Malaysian line-up yesterday, and although exact prices have not been determined yet, we now at least know a price range as well as spec levels of the different variants. It’s a sexy SUV with an appealing design that reminds me somewhat of a smaller Audi Q7.

The Chevrolet Captiva (essentially a Daewoo Winstorm) will come in four flavours on our local soil – a 2WD petrol, a 2WD diesel, a 4WD petrol and a 4WD diesel. The petrol option will be a 2.4 litre 4-cylinder iron block E-TEC II engine putting out a relatively low (for it’s displacement) 136 horsepower at 5,000rpm, and a decent 220Nm of torque at a surprisingly low 2,200rpm. This engine was definitely tuned to make all of its grunt at low RPMs, good for an SUV. The diesel option is a 2.0 litre turbocharged unit with Bosch direct injection making 150hp at 4,000rpm and 320Nm of torque at 2,000rpm.

Both engines are mated to a 5-speed automatic transmission with Tiptronic. For the 2WD models the power goes to the wheels via the front wheels, while in 4WD versions the system runs mostly with the front wheels, but sends torque to the rear wheels as needed up to a 50:50 split. The 7-seater Chevrolet Captiva uses a monocoque chassis (long wheelbase GM Theta platform) and rides on a MacPherson strut setup on the front and a multilink suspension at the rear, so comfort and handling should exceed competing SUVs that use a ladder frame chassis and rear coil spring setup.

It will be priced from RM138,000 for the cheapest 2WD petrol variant to RM155,000 for the most expensive 4WD diesel variant, which will include premium safety features such as ESP stability control, and Descent Control.

Two launches in one year by the new Hicom-Chevrolet joint venture – what’s next? Perhaps the Asian-market Chevrolet Colorado (a rebadged Isuzu D-MAX)?
