Lexus IS250 launched in Malaysia today

Lexus IS250

2009 UPDATE: 2009 Lexus IS 250 facelift launched in Malaysia, now available in 2 variants!

UMW Toyota’s luxury division Lexus Malaysia will be launching it’s fourth model today, the Lexus IS250. The IS250 will go against the BMW 325i and the Mercedes Benz C230 (or whatever it’s equivalent is in Malaysia for the W204), and is expected to account for a third of Lexus Malaysia’s projected sales of 300 units in 2008.

In overseas markets, the Lexus IS250 uses the 4GR-FSE, something that some of you might already be familiar with as it is the same engine in the 2.5 litre version of Naza’s Toyota Mark X. The 2.5 litre V6 engine makes 205 horsepower at 6,400rpm and up to 265Nm of torque at 4,800rpm, rather impressive torque figures for a 2.5 litre engine as usually you only get 100Nm of torque per litre of displacement for a normally aspirated engine. This might not be the exact state of tune that we’ll get in our Malaysian market, so more details will be posted here once Lexus Malaysia’s website is updated.

Expected price is about RM300k, which puts it somewhere at a premium over the normal 325i, but slightly cheaper than the 325i M Sport. Exact price to be posted here later.

UPDATE: Here’s the official deal on the car: RM313,166.20 on the road inclusive of insurance gets you a Lexus IS250 with a 2.5 litre V6 4GR-FSE engine complete with D4 direct injection producing 205 horsepower at 6,400 rpm and 252Nm of torque at 4,800 rpm. This is mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission with sequential shifting and steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters. Equipment includes HID headlamps, vehicle stability control, adaptive front-lighting, rain-sensing wipers, anti-glare rear view and wing mirrors, and of course the Lexus trademark here in Malaysia – an awesome Mark Levinson sound system with 14 speakers.

More photos and four videos of the Lexus IS250 after the jump.

Subaru’s 2.0L turbodiesel boxer – 110kW/147hp

Subaru’s new turbodiesel boxer was displayed at the 2007 Frankfurt International Motor Show, so let’s have a look at some specifications. The new engine is the world’s first horizontally-opposed diesel, or boxer engine as it’s more commonly referred to.

We finally have some stats on the engine although it’s still very vague at the moment. The engine is 2.0 litre in size and puts out 147 horsepower – quoted as 110kW, incidentally the same amount as it’s 2.0 litre normally aspirated petrol sibling – and 350Nm of torque. CO2 emissions level is rated at 150g/km.

Subaru’s Executive Vice President Mat Nagato says the new turbodiesel engine will make it’s production car debut in the beginning of 2008. Let’s hope more stats on the engine will be revealed at the 2007 Tokyo Motor Show. We still don’t have any idea of how the torque curve of the engine looks like.

Anything you can do I can do better F1 Ad

hamilton_alonso_left.jpgThis amusing advertisement has Fernando Alonso and Lewis Hamilton in a little spot of rivalry, both being two of the youngest people in F1 at 26 and 22 respectively. Both drive for the Vodafone McLaren Mercedes F1 team. Of course, at the end they meet big brother. The song playing in the background is “I can do anything you can do better”, originally performed by Annie Oakley and Frank Butler. Hat tip thanks to Damien O.Y. Watch the video after the jump.

BMW Williams F1 car vs BMW M5

No prizes for guessing which car wins this race, but still it’s a fun watch. Tiff Needel drives the F1 car while Vicki drives the BMW M5. It’s amazing to see how easily the F1 car overtakes the BMW M5 when they are going side by side, plus watch out for them to announce the big difference in average speed around the track!

BMW X5 Lemans Video

BMW X5 Lemans

Have you heard of the BMW X5 Lemans? It was a first generation E53 BMW X5, but it had something very special under it’s hood -a 700 horsepower 6.0 litre V12 engine from the BMW V12 LMR that won the legendary 24-hour Le Mans in 1999. For endurance purposes, the engine was detuned to 580 horsepower, but all 700 is unleashed in the X5 Lemans application.

The BMW X5 Lemans did 0 to 100km/h in 4.7 seconds, and had a top speed of 311km/h. A massive 720Nm of torque at 5,000rpm is sent trashing through the 20 inch wheels with 275/40 profile tyres at the front and 315/35 profile tyres at the rear. The weight balance is very slightly front-biased at ratio of 51 to 49.

2007 Kia Optima 2.0 soon?

Kia Optima

The Hyundai Sonata and the Kia Optima used to be mechanical brothers, and both variants were available here in Malaysia, with the latter offered by Naza Kia Sdn Bhd. The Hyundai Sonata has since been updated with an all-new model here in Malaysia first as a CBU and subsequently as a locally assembled CKD unit.

As for the Kia offering, the old Optima is still on sale, but looking at Naza Kia’s continuous efforts with the Kia brand here in Malaysia (the most recent being the introduction of a locally assembled Kia Sportage), we are poised to see the new Kia Optima here very soon as a locally assembled model.

The new Kia Optima differs slightly from it’s Hyundai Sonata brother in the area of front suspension setup, where the Sonata uses a multilink setup while Kia uses a MacPherson strut setup at the front.

Engine options consist of a 145 PS inline-4, a 161 PS 2.4 litre inline-4 and a 185 PS 2.7 litre V6 mated to a 4-speed or 5-speed automatic transmission, with a 5-speed manual also available for those who prefer clutch action.

Kia has been emphasizing on the crash test results of the new Optima, which earned a 5-star rating in the NHTSA crash tests and a 4-star rating in the EuroNCAP crash test.

According to a dealer tip, unlike the Sonata which offers 2.0 and 2.4 litre variants, the Kia Optima will most likely be offered as a 2.0 litre inline-4 only, but will have two different trim levels – a standard one called EX with dual airbags, ABS, fabric seats, CD/MP3/USB audio and a higher spec model called EX “Special Package” with more goodies like a 6.1 Infinity sound system (4 speakers, 2 tweeters, 1 subwoofer) with a 420 watt external amplifier and a 6-CD in-dash changer, ESP stability control, 215/50R17 Michelin Pilot Premacy-wrapped 17″ wheels, powered driver’s seat, and suede/leather upholstery.

Both models will be available with a 4-speed auto gearbox, as the 5-speed units are only available for the 2.7 litre engine. Expect a classy black interior with real aluminium trim, similiar to the locally assembled Kia Sportage.

Have a look at more pics and videos after the jump.
