FIRST LOOK: 2017 Ford Ranger 2.2 FX4 video review

The Ford Ranger FX4 was launched in April this year to serve as the pick-up truck’s flagship 2.2 litre model, just as the Wildtrak is to the 3.2 litre line-up. The new variant offers plenty of Wildtrak-like equipment (but not quite the full package), commanding a price of RM121,888 – that’s a near-RM7k premium over the 2.2 XLT, but well under the full-fat Wildtrak’s eye-watering RM140k price tag.

On the outside, it gets a piano black grille with matching side mirrors and door handles, along with unique 18-inch wheels in grey and a sticker job on the front bonnet, along the sides and the tailgate. The FX4 also features a blacked-out sports bar and roof rails, while a flat and wide side steps are added on too. Inside, it gets black leather upholstery and more black trim pieces.

Under the hood, a 2.2 litre four-cylinder turbodiesel serves up 158 hp and 385 Nm of torque, paired with a six-speed automatic transmission and a driver-selectable all-wheel drive system. The Ranger 2.2 FX4 can be ordered in Meteor Grey or Aluminium Metallic, and comes with a three-year/100,000 km warranty.

Watch our video review above to find out how it fares on Malaysian roads, and how it compares to the rest of the pick-up truck class. For detailed specifications and equipment list, refer to CarBase.my – the full Ford Ranger range received another round of price increase in March 2017.

Ford Ranger is ultimate UMW Hilux destroyer. Amazing the Ranger gave VSC long ago (like 5 yrs ago) but Hilux still refused to give VSC unless highest end model. This is why Hilux sales went down the drain.

When is greedy gomen owned UMW going to give VSC in the lower end models of Hilux? Gomen already said having VSC in all cars can reduce accidents by 45%.

But yet gomen owned UMW refuses to give VSC in lower end models.

Toyota still sells more Hilux than Ford selling Ranger each month. Still the best.

Correct me if I am wrong, is Ford Ranger the only pickup with 3 years warranty while others (Toyota, Mitsubishi, Isuzu) are offering 5 years warranty?

When they first introduced the wildtrak in Malaysia, there were 2 engine sizes ie 2.2 & 3.2. Why don’t they just bring in the 2.2 wildtrak as the road tax is very much less.
Or can they bring in the FX4 again but with better safety features?
