2018 Mercedes-Maybach S-Class officially revealed

Ahead of the upcoming Geneva Motor Show, Mercedes-Maybach has unveiled the updated S-Class, which comes in three variants – S 560, S 560 4Matic and S 650. As a reminder, the Maybach S-Class features a wheelbase of 3,365 mm – 200 mm more than the long-wheelbase S-Class it is based on.

The increased length benefits rear passengers, who also have access to two individual Executive seats. According to the carmaker, the Maybach S-Class has notched up over 25,000 units sold since it was introduced, and more than one in 10 S-Class models was a Maybach, with primary markets being China, Russia and the US.

In its latest guise, the Maybach S-Class adopts a new grille design that is said to be “inspired by a pinstriped suit” as well as the Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6 concepts. The front fascia also gets a different bumper with a good number of trim elements that are model-specific.

Also unique to the Maybach S-Class is a two-tone exterior paint finish, with up to nine colour combinations available upon request. Those who opt for dark colours can also specify a double clear coat for an even more lustrous look, courtesy of specially trained varnishers at Maybach Manufaktur.

Other aspects of the exterior include a new luxury 20-inch multi-spoke wheel, along with three exclusive 20-inch options. The headlights and taillights follow those on the latest S-Class.

Moving inside, there are two new colour combinations being offered – armagnac brown/black and savanna beige/black. The black Maybach Exclusive nappa leather upholstery can now be paired with copper-, gold- or platinum-coloured contrast topstitching. Also available are trim inserts in designo flowing lines Magnolia.

For the S 560 and S 560 4Matic, a 4.0 litre turbocharged V8 provides 469 hp and 700 Nm of torque. Aside from the presence of the 4Matic all-wheel drive system, both will do the zero to 100 km/h sprint in 4.9 seconds. However, the S 560 is more economical at 8.8 l/100 km (versus 9.3 l/100 km) and emits less CO2 (198 g/km versus 209 g/km) than the S 560 4Matic.

At the top of the range is the S 650, which gets a 6.0 litre turbocharged V12 engine with 630 hp and 1,000 Nm of torque. In this guise, the century sprint is done 0.2 seconds quicker, but fuel economy and CO2 emissions are higher (12.7 l/100 km and 298 g/km) following the combined cycle.

    What’s the difference between a regular S-class & a Maybach ??
The regular Rich man comes to BOD meeting with a S-class while the Chairman/President comes with a Maybach.

Price is not the problem when over 25,000 units sold since it was introduced. It seems the people in China, US & Russia want something more exotic instead of conventional premium.

In short, it’s a way of saying my Maybech is different/better than your S-class.

That was the problem with this.

In this rarefied level, this just doesn’t come across as bespoke enough.

But then again, who am I to say.
