Perodua D38L SUV set to debut this year – report

Rumours of a new Perodua SUV have been around for some time now, and a report by Kenanga Research may have confirmed that such a model exists. The unnamed SUV (codename D38L) is said to make its launch debut this year as part of efforts to ensure Perodua meets its sales target of 209,000 units for 2018.

The company had already stated it is seriously considering the introduction of a compact SUV in the past in light of current market trends, but has remain tight-lipped on the details. It has been suggested that the Daihatsu DN Trec Concept, a preview for a B-segment SUV, could be the model Perodua has in mind to re-enter the SUV market.

A budget rival to B-segment SUVs such as the Honda HR-V, Mazda CX-3 and Toyota C-HR will certainly be something that might pique the interest of car buyers. In an earlier report, Perodua president and CEO Datuk Aminar Rashid Salleh said the psychological price point for Perodua cars is RM60,000.

“We believe that at this point in time, that seems to be that psychological line. But having said that, cost is something beyond our control; materials and the rest. If it has to come to that, we have to make certain decisions. We have to make certain adjustments,” he said.

Previous Perodua SUV models include the Kembara as well as the Nautica, both of which are based on different generations of the Daihatsu Terios.

This car will wipe out Proton flat. At the end of the day, Perodua will use Japanese quality engine. The engine that is sold in over 200 countries worldwide.

Proton will be suing China engine. Only could be sold in China and 1 or 2 countries globally. Cannot be sold in first world countries like USA, Europe, Japan, Australia and New Zealand.

So which engine would you choose? One sold in 200 countries globally or one only sold in China mainly??

Currently Myvi & Jazz differs around RM20K, if Perodua wanna rebadge 7-seater Terios maybe it’ll be RM20K cheaper also than Honda BRV so the price around RM60-65K.

The 5-seater SUV probably derived from Myvi with taller height as per above SUV concept and the price starts above Myvi but below 7-seater SUV price (RM55K-60K).

In that way, surely Proton Boyue gonna be another huge sales failure disaster unable to penetrate the budget SUV both in size segment & pricing. Bwa Ha Ha Ha Ha Wooo Hoooo!!!

Perodua quality is trusted and I own one as well. All I can say, Toyota sales is moving down. In order for them to gained back profits. Toyota focus into Perodua since its their same blood brother. I believe SUV segment intro by Perodua and injected with latest technology from P.Myvi. It will be very welcome by most buyer. All we can do is wait and hope the design wise and spec is well equip. Good job Perodua!

The last 10 yrs, every new launching of Perodua has been a runaway success. The sales of the new myvi alone, can over take the entire sales volumn of Protong. Why?Thro sheer hardwork, innovation, good tie up with Daihatsu/Toyota….unlike Protong who is confined to a wheelchair, sickly n always asking for bailouts.

  • Now I can see why Toyota wants to kill Perodua. If this prices under RM100k with equal or above features from new Myvi, buh-bye C-HR. Not that it was gonna do much against heavyweight HR-V, what idiot in UMW thought the very late entry plus such a ridiculous price (it’s in the C-Segment SUV market) would make for a good sale?! Probably the Proton guys who priced their previous year Accord facelift near the current model’s price. Maybe they’re banking on novelty, maybe people are sick of the HR-V? But Malaysians have show time again, that it’s all PRICE, PRICE, PRICE. Everything else is secondary.

For safety reason yes i agree with you it’s not the safeties, but in that time almost all model from other brand also have the minimal safety for their car

For the new SUV i hope P2 will improve the spec and their safety.

looks like another winner.. although there is something that i will never understand with regards to proton and perodua. When proton builds their own car.. they get crap for it.. when proton rebadges a proven car from another manufacturer, they also get crap for it and many even question why they didnt develop their own. But when perodua launches a car, none of which is developed by them and are all technically rebadged cars or have undergone skin changes.. there is absolutely no issue with that. By this logic, it seems that malaysian consumers have no problems at all with rebadging cars, unless its done by proton. but why is that?

Because Perodua never blame rakyat whenever sales is low and always listen to rakyat needs for affordable quality fuel efficient cars.

In return, rakyat will always support Perodua forever.

This kind of mutual trust can never be stopped by anyone, not even Geely ready to burn billions for Proton yearly.
