GALLERY: Toyota Avanza 1.5X goes for the SUV look

Last month, UMW Toyota Motor (UMWT) announced the Toyota Avanza 1.5X, a new range-topping variant of the seven-seater MPV. Going for RM82,700 on-the-road without insurance, the Avanza X wears tougher styling for a pseudo SUV look. That’s the trick used by Honda for the BR-V, although that one was designed from the ground-up to look “rugged”.

The Avanza 1.5X’s defining cosmetic add-on is the black cladding on the entire lower portion of the car – front, back and sides including the wheel arches. There are silver sections in the front and rear lower bumper to simulate skid plates. The matte black cladding is mixed with some gloss black bits higher up, and there are LED daytime running lights below the fog lamps.

All the above lower body add-ons are matched with blacked-out D pillars for the “floating roof” effect. There are also ‘X’ badges on the front wings and the rear gets extra red reflectors next to the vertical tail lights.

Optional kit shown here include two-tone multi-spoke 16-inch alloy wheels and a “roof ornament”, which we presume to mean that the roof rails are merely decorative. As usual for UMWT models, customers can upgrade the head unit to DVD-AVX or DVD-AVN systems, both with touchscreens.

This is the Toyota model that will ride and handle like a SAMPAN

Make me car sick and vomiting whenever I ride in an Avanza .

I really hate this Toyota Avanza

Ugly , unsafe , typically a dinosaur SAMPAN.

Did regret A LOT buying the previous AVANZA.

I personally think it’s like a bicycle trying to be a bike, a superbike in this case.. If, only if Toyota think by putting heavy make up to this car can boost their sales, they should think twice..

To be honest, I have never seen one of this Avanza X on the road. In fact, it’s getting difficult to see Avanzas with newer plate numbers these days. The ‘new’ Rush? That one is rarer than a unicorn!

  • The Honda BRV is super ugly and it looks like Toyota is trying to beat the BRV with this hideous Avanza 1.5X

  • To be honest, one does not become a SUV by adding plastic claddings and rugged sport rims to a 7 seater van. The Avanza has been in the market for far too long and due for an entirely new design. It dont think it will appeal to the youngsters, not to mention the older generation crowd. Too SUV wanna-be but failed miserably due to add-on parts that look like something you can get from an accessory shop. Sorry, but this is one model I will not consider if I am looking for a SUV or crossover. Thats just my personal opinion.

Umw knows avanza is not selling hot anymore. Avanza sells by the lot in Indonesia, hence they bring this on as asean-CBU to enjoy afta rate. This is better than the 90s when Toyota only has 2 car models on display. The corolla and Camry. Now they have Vios, avanza, rush, Innova In the line up.

This should be they marketing strategy to clear an old stock avanza while they’re planning to bring the new rush 2018 to replace avanza since the new rush is use the same engine and Platform from this dinosaur.
