New Suzuki Jimny revealed – a cool, baby G-Wagen

New Suzuki Jimny revealed – a cool, baby G-Wagen

Fancy the new Mercedes-Benz G-Class? You’re not alone, but the price and positioning of the G-Wagen might be a bit prohibitive for most. Here’s something that’s just as retro, and just as rugged – the new Suzuki Jimny. Here are official photos from a microsite, which fully reveal the small 4×4 that will hit showrooms next month.

The Jimny is not a small SUV like the ones your neighbours have (for Suzuki, that’s the Vitara), but a true off-roader famed for its ability to go further down the trail than its size suggests. The third-generation Jimny first surfaced in 1998, which means that it has been around for 20 years. This new one doesn’t reference the outgoing car in design though, going further back into the catalogue to look truly retro. And cool.

There aren’t a lot of official details to go with the pics, but the Jimny will continue with a ladder frame, three-link rigid axle suspension and part time four-wheel drive, with low-range transfer gear for off-road excursions. The boxy body can be had as it is (above pic), or with wide over-fenders (top pic) – the former might be to keep dimensions within kei car boundaries.

Word is that the new Jimny will be powered by Suzuki’s 1.0 litre Boosterjet three-cylinder turbo engine, with the option of a 1.2 litre NA unit. A five-speed manual will be offered alongside a torque converter auto option, but both will get an old-school manual low-range gear selector, which can be seen in one of the interior images.

I’ve been wanting a modern Suzuki for sometime now, and this new Jimny continues the brand’s current trend of cool designs, even while keeping it true to the model’s ethos. What do you think?

Suzuki don’t want Proton culture. All sleep, don’t come to work, tuang, lazy, looking for aweks during office hours etc

Suzuki follow Japanese culture. Work hard and highly focused in their work……oh wai!!!

malaysia is better than indonesia because 40% of the population is non-earthprince. similarly , singapore is better than malaysia because, well look at their population ethnicity.

The 660cc model reflects the true spirit of a jimny – fun and light instead of the 1.0l or 1.2l has the bulky wheel arches and bumper. It feels like Jeep in some angles.

What a great move in the design. I love the JDM 660cc jimny model, the bumper less bulky. It definitely shows the kei car side of jimny, small and happy. Hopefully the new jimny is available in Malaysia. The perfect car to have!

This Suzuki Jimny is light weight and always handles like a “SAMPAN”.
May encounter car sickness and body balancing problem after a short ride in it .

Not suitable for travelling on ordinary roads daily except suitable for use in orchards and plantations only.

I prefer this model to be fitted with 1.3 litre engine preferably with turbo if possible. The 1.0 litre is too small although the power may be sufficient enough.

If Suzuki were to bring it in here, they should bring in with the wheel arch, looks better with it.

I owned the original Suzuki Jimny 1.0 version and used it extensively for my off roading learning experience.
    My take on this:
    1. It must have sufficient torque when you are fully loaded to tackle deep muds and steep uphill sections.
    2. It must be stable, since it has high CG and short wheelbase. Else it could easily over turn on uneven terrains or hill slopes.
    3. Must have sufficient interior space for passengers and all camping gears – such as tents, cooler box, folding tables/chairs, stove, recovery equipment, food, etc.
    4. The fuel tank capacity must be big enough for extended range. The last thing you want is to be out of fuel while deep in the Malaysian jungle. Else you need to bring a Jerry can and a place to hang it on to the vehicle.
    5. Sufficient power sockets/USB outlets to charge your gadgets and other portable equipment – such as portable electric pump, lights, walkie talkie, etc.
    6. OE accessories for various active lifestyle activities, such as camping, biking, hiking, fishing, kayaking, etc.
    7. Sufficient spare parts at reasonable price. Not everything must come from Japan, because it will be expensive. My previous Perodua Nautica Air Filter cost me RM140.00/unit because it uses the original Daihatsu part and has to be imported form Japan.
    8. Attractive selling price to attract FCB and young executives with active lifestyle. Good Luck!
