PT TALKS: Kia Stinger in Malaysia – looks good, but…

A day that a lot of people never thought would come has arrived – the Kia Stinger has been launched in Malaysia. The rear-wheel drive halo model is now available here in two turbocharged forms: 2.0 T-GDI GT-Line for RM240k and the full-fat 3.3 V6 GT for RM310k.

Obviously this is uncharted territory for Kia. Never before has the Korean brand offered a model as ambitious, exciting and of course, as expensive as this. A budget brand, Kia no longer is. That, is certain.

The question is, is it ready to play with the big boys – is the Stinger a valid alternative to the established German upper class brigade it’s trying to gain entry to? Beyond that, would yours truly have considered the Stinger instead of the Mercedes-Benz C 300, and would Matt, as a long-time Kia owner, do the same? Find out in this episode of PT Talks.

Beyond that, we also touch on a sore subject: the lack of Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB) on the Stinger. Do give us your thoughts below, and thank you for watching.

How to spend RM310k for a Korean car? Koreans have become arrogant. Pricing their cars in the same territory as Mercedes and BMW.

Do you know you can buy a 2015 Mercedes S400L Hybrid with just 20,000 clocked on it and still remaining warranty by MBM for RM310k?

I rather buy a 2nd hand Mercedes S class anytime with that kind of money

Rm310k for a Kia? Even Japanese cars in Malaysia, nobody will dare cross the RM150k psychological point barrier.

Even Japanese brands admits RM150k is the psychological line for Japanese cars.

Now Korean car want to cross it and jump to RM310k?

We (at least for me) will just go for a class lower for the same amount of money. Everyone will say yes, Stinger is a good car or best car but in reality, how many of us willing to spend that amount of money for Kia? Die hard fans, do not attack me. I just voice out what majority of people will think in this case.

It all boils down to what you want. And everyone want different things. A driving enthusiast may consider the Stinger (its Nurburgring development was headed by the former boss of BMW M) more than by a badge snob. The guy who wants to have the badge, can just get a CLA and be happy with himself. Is it wrong? If he enjoys it, why not? Personally, I would like to get one. But I am a bit surprised by the lack of boot space. I can live with the badge, having to service the Stinger together with other lesser models, and lack of collision prevention. It surprises me cos when Alex on Autos reviewed the US spec Stinger, he mentioned the boot was quite big. But when it came here, that was no longer the case. Perhaps US Stingers don’t have spare tyre?

Look at the specs, technologies, And it is a luxury performance sedan. Brembo brake at all 4 corner (Stinger GT). Kia also benchmark an M6 during development. So you still expect it to be cheap? Good morning bud.

DO read review & details before write something lame. Or else u may buy brembo brake pad cover for your car.

Great car… really really expensive price tag for a normal Malaysian. more than half the price of a double storey house in some ulu place.Majority of Malaysians stay far away from central city and towns and opt to stay 30-60 km away from their workplace due to affordability. Better car and vehicle performance is imperative for us but not at these exhorbitants price.

Looks like its a no for most of us then…

Lexus has been improving a bit on exterior, and even a bit over-done now, but interior kind of sucky. Practical, but not stylish and lacks the wow factor.

Infiniti cars.. looks like bulbous blobs inside and out. Interior is freakin hideous.

Kia actually built their brand in western countries. They won most reliable car for a few years (US, UK), and their vehicles won best in segments for many automotive awards. Stinger actually won best design for Red Dot award recently. Just in Malaysia the brand needs more time to build, since they started quite poorly long ago

  • Optima GT 2.0 Turbo is below 170k with similiar HP n Torque performance vs the Stiger 2.0 priced at Mid200k.. thats a huge gap in terms of price although Stinger does look outstanding vs the Optima GT. KIA should have positioned the the Stinger 2.0 at below 200k, possibly a 15 to 20k gap higher than the Optima GT while the 3.3 model at mid200k to lure consumers. Take note that the current price is temp. tax free but with the forthcoming SST.. the gap will even be further apart for consumers even to consider this BEAST!

Well, the high price could be partially blamed on our insane import car excise duties… a check on the Stinger’s retail price in Australia, it’s about AUD 59,990 (about RM180k)… and they get offered up to 6 variants in total (3 variants for the 4-cylinder, and 3 variants for the V6)

It’s got very good specs and performance for it’s price range overseas (not here in Malaysia).. wish I had the money to afford one here (let me rephrase that: afford to pay the duties)

Only idiots buy KIA at 300k. Totally souless car. What they did is just plonk a big turbocharged engine into the car. Thats it. This car has no feel. The built quality is rubbish as well. Just watch the reviews on youtube.

Please please dont ever try to put German and Jap cars together in the same league as Korean cars.

Koreans cars are miles behind the Japs let alone the Germans in terms of refinement, technology and driving charecteristics.

Please KIA , take your junk back to Korea. Dont ever bring junk to Malaysia pls. Tq

Toyota Vios is also a Japanese junk too.

Why Malaysia buyers buy this junk even to the extend of owning those Takata air bags killers ? Most buyers who buy this junk Vios are not rich and their lives are also worthless too.

Saving at the expense of safety is the mentality of this low level Malaysian buyers.

Korean cars are stronger ,beautiful and safer than most Japanese cars and even better than Japanese cars for some of their models.

Statistics showd for every korean junk car sold there will TEN Japanese j
JUNK cars sold too. Not to mention some VW models are German JUNK cars too.

I think you missed a lot of reviews. Most (almost all) praised the drivability of this Stinger. Its tuned by ex BMW M boss anyway.

  • 2.0 model is a lot of car for the money
u’d get looks, practicality , good RWD fun and driving experience

3.3 model , is abit of a stretch if you r touching 300k price point , cuz if performance is what u aim for , few others would offer more at that price point….
say….. WRX STI comes to mind…

I’m in a generation that look more into price perspecification than a brand so yes if this car has better spec than anything in the same price leagues, I will get this car instead.

KIA’s hired Audi’s EX head designer.
KIA’s hired BMW Msports EX head engineer.

Many of you are so uneducated when you say it is no where near the performance of a Continental.

KIA has exceeded in terms of technology.. it was necessary to be dumbdown the specs just to protect Continentals.
