Geely under watch for Malaysian Proton workforce

The Malaysian government will be closely monitoring Proton stakeholder Geely in order to ensure that Malaysians will continue to be prioritised in the company’s workforce, said human resources minister M. Kula Segaran in a New Straits Times report.

“With regards to Proton, we will carry out comprehensive investigations if they do not abide by the law,” said the minister, adding that foreign companies are bound by Malaysian laws on the matter of employing foreign workers. Employers are barred from firing local workers in order to hire foreigners, in line with Section 60M of the Employment Act 1955, Kula Segaran said.

This was in response to a question by Kapar member of Parliament Abdullah Sani Abdul Hamid, who asked what measures would be taken if foreign management of local companies refuse to hire Malaysians. The minister admitted that there is a shortage of labour inspectors for checking on businesses, and the ministry has applied to the Ministry of Finance to increase the number of its inspectors, he said.

DRB-Hicom and Geely signed a partnership in July 2017 for the latter to acquire a 49.9% equity stake in Proton, which included the agreement for Proton to be the manufacturing hub for Geely’s right-hand-drive (RHD) models. The first product from Proton to come of this partnership is the forthcoming Proton SUV, which is slated for launch this October. The 2018 Geely Boyue forms the basis for this model.

According to Ahmad Maslan, Proton sales expected to climb to 500,000 units per year. So none of the 9600 staff should be retrenched.

The truth of the matter, Proton needs to cut their workers by half. This should have been done 20 years ago.

So, Proton was running at a loss at RM4 million a day and the whole of Malaysia had to pay for this overbloated workforce.

Every year billions of bailout money was given. Money that could have gone for the rebuilding of free Government schools and free Government hospitals

Mind you , it is no point keeping useless and Tidak apa attitude workers that are eating into the quality , unproductivity and increase cost of manufacturing.

Nobody owed a living to Tidak apa attitude workers that take no responsibility and accountability in works .

Better to sack this type of workers now if you happen to be in P1 factories. Really sickening to see this type of attitude still persist especially LEPAK in the canteen with mobile phones and missing from their stations at times.

  • The government is doing a good job in warning Geely about this. Looking at the Proton sales of less than 28000 for first half this year, I think they may struggle to reach 70000 this year even with the tax holiday. Boyue’s launch may be in Sept/Oct but sales may only show in Dec or next Jan as Malaysian’s tend to not register cars at the end of the year to avoid the “year end value depreciation”.
Even the government may struggle to intervene if Proton sales are as bad as last year or worse. Geely can then justify any reduction in workforce.

Some people never learn from others’ mistakes.

Dear PH government, if you want Proton to improve, then DO NOT interfere with Proton’s business, like the previous government did. Business is business, politics is politics.

If Geely wants to hire more talented, hard-working foreigners for Proton’s turnaround plan, then let them do as they see fit. Geely is not your typical China car company. They know exactly what they’re doing.

Give Geely a chance, give them a blank check. If they mess up, then sure, the government can ‘punish’ them later. If they succeed, then great, because Proton is ‘saved’.

    Win-win, right ?

So please, I say again, DO NOT interfere with Proton-Geely’s turnaround plan.

While its good for the Govt of Malaysia to supervise Geely in their efforts to turnaround Proton and protect our local workers.

However, our govt also needs to supervise our local vendors and workers to deliver world class standards and quality. I

f not Proton and our workers wont be able to compete at the top end of global automotive industry. There is no two way about it. Proton, our local vendors and staffs need to exhibit these through world class products and services.

The alternative is that Proton and our automotive industry will be doomed. We have on our behind VietNam (VinFast Auto), Indonesia, India (Tata Auto) etc coming in to fight for the right to exist in this business and industry space.

Japanese auto workers always make sure the last screw must be tightened before leaving for each breaks . Our workers may not tighten the last screw before and after each breaks when the assembly lines stop and restart again.

That is why a lot of new proton cars got the type of loose screw or rattling sounds always.

What type of workforce is this in keeping them.? No pride and quality concern in their work tasks and we want to keep them???
