Perodua Alza to get updates before being replaced

Perodua Alza to get updates before being replaced

With the introduction of the new Perodua Myvi in November, the Alza is now the oldest model in the national carmaker’s stable – having first debuted late in 2009, it predates the previous-generation Myvi. The seven-seater MPV was facelifted once in 2014, but news of a replacement or even another update of the current model has been pretty much non-existent since then.

Now, finally, there’s some word on an upcoming refresh. Responding to a question by the media during a press conference after Perodua’s first half performance announcement, Perodua Sales managing director Datuk Zahari Husin said that while he cannot disclose details about a replacement, the current Alza will receive improvements beforehand.

“We know our Alza is the oldest [in the lineup], but demand is still very good, still according to our plan. When we are going to replace Alza, at this moment we want to keep it as a secret, but definitely some improvements are on the way. When we are going to introduce the improved Alza, you will know soon. We need to continue to create excitement for the Alza, there will be some cosmetic [updates],” he said.

No other details have been revealed, but we expect the Alza to get a new 1.5 litre Dual VVT-i engine from the Myvi – in the hatchback, it makes 102 hp and 136 Nm of torque – as well as convenience features such as keyless entry and push-button start. These updates would be similar to those given last year to the entry-level Axia, which also received a new engine.

Don’t hold your breath for any new safety features like stability control, however, as Perodua has already confirmed that the Alza was not designed for the inclusion of the electronic safety net.

Today Perodua announced sales figures. Figures are superb. Nearly 5x the sales of Proton.

Perodua projected to sell 220,000 cars this year. Proton is still talking about 50,000.

        How sad.

with Perodua proven to be able to design and engineer its own body like Bezza and Myvi Icon, it is unlikely the Alza replacement would be a carbon coby of other Daihatsu or toyota existing or new model.

Generally speaking, the MPV market in ASEAN is the least competitive of them all.

Just look at the popular MPVs in ASEAN; Innova, Avanza, BR-V/ Mobilio, Alza, Exora, Ertiga etc.. Almost all of them are ageing designs, or mechanically outdated. The Toyota Sienta is the sole notable exception, being a former JDM exclusive model. Most of these MPVs aren’t big on safety either, despite being family oriented.

Do you know why the ASEAN MPV segment is not so competitive ? It’s because of the primary type of people who buy these MPVs. They just want a spacious, cheap, reliable and hassle-free vehicle to transport their 4 or 5 children. They don’t care about things like independent rear suspension, soft-touch plastics or refinement. Most of them still don’t even know what ISOFIX is. Rear seat belts ? Why bother ?

Even the ASEAN pickup truck segment is more competitive than the MPV segment.

agree. but this kind mpv (small) cater for small emerging family. that’s why the size is small and cheap (the cost). torsion beam suspension? outdated argument actually..bcause it’s all about tuning. exora is one of the best handling mpv using tb suspension. cheap..sturdy..gives better interior space (especially for the rear seat). why should they care about independent suspension?

Those old cars stopped on the roadside with bonnet up sometimes due to unfortunate incident or parts issue that require the cars to be stopped immediately (even me also face it once, lucky the temperature gauge is there that sense something is not right when it was rising abnormally towards red zone), but not those cars that have it’s front bonnet smoked out and caught fire due to unnoticeable overheating (because of the manufacturer that we love to worship cleverly cut corner and remove the important temperature gauge).

Because the law only applies on model launched AFTER the enforcement date. Since Alza was launched back in 2009, of course it’s not bounded by this law. Going by your logic, Perdoua will not able to sell any of their Axia.

Btw sir… i already checked the facts.
The winner projected to sell 200k++ cars this year (with only launch 1 new model last year since 2014), and the loser despite launching 4 new models in 2016 only target to sell 50k cars… to put it into perspectives, P2 already deliver 100k ++ cars in the first half this year, twice as much as what P1 targeted to sell for the whole year…

ya. P2 is always like this. Tooling cost amortized long time ago but price remains almost the same during first time launching. Probably the price remains due to having to pay loyalty to Daihatsu for infinity and beyondddd.

Hope P2 will consider to expedite their Alza replacement with safety features of at least on par with Bezza.

This last kopek facelift to Alza means P2 isn’t ready to launch the SUV for at least another 6- 9 months, maybe a year.

IF, a big IF, Proton is able to accelerate the RHD conversion of SX11, there maybe a possibility that both P1 & P2 will launch the B Segment SUV about the same time. Now, THAT would bring us into interesting times. This huge untapped market of affordable B Segment SUV is up for grabs.

Pricing will surely play the biggest part. Ultimately it is the consumers that will win as both will try to grab the same (untapped) market share. Let’s see how their respective marketing & promotion will play out.
