FIRST DRIVE: 2018 Ford Ranger Raptor video review – will this be the new pick-up king on Malaysian roads?

The first ever Ford Ranger Raptor is a culmination of work spanning no less than four years in the making, a vehicle that’s developed with one purpose in mind – to be the ultimate, all-terrain compact pick-up truck on offer. It’s the second high-performance pick-up truck after the F-150 Raptor in the Ford Performance stable, populated by the likes of the GT, Focus RS and Shelby GT350.

It’s a Raptor through and through, from the way it drives, right up to the way it looks. We’ve gone through the vehicle in detail (along with a massive picture gallery), so be sure to check it out, here. In terms of performance, the Ranger Raptor is fitted with a new EcoBlue 2.0 litre bi-turbo four-cylinder diesel, making 213 PS and 500 Nm of torque. Power is put down to the ground via a new 10-speed automatic transmission with downshift rev matching.

Several notable features include the full Raptor exterior styling, Raptor leather-suede sports bucket seats with blue contrast stitching, Raptor steering wheel with red 12 o’ clock marker, steering-mounted magnesium paddle shifters, six drive modes including Baja mode, SYNC 3 infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay functionalities and a reverse camera.

Off-road numbers include an approach angle of 32.5 degrees, ramp over angle of 24 degrees and departure angle of 24 degrees. Its water wading depth is rated at 850 mm – all this is achieved by raising the car by 50 mm (ground clearance is 283 mm now), but its centre of gravity remains unchanged. A set of Fox Racing Shox dampers with internal bypass system adds credence to its performance, and the rear suspension is supplemented by a coilover with Watt’s linkage setup.

For safety, it gets ESC, trailer sway control, hill start assist, hill descent control, load adaptive control and active lane keeping assist. However, features such as Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB) and adaptive cruise control are absent, but the former will be offered at a later date.

So, would you be interested in getting the Ranger Raptor? Let us know below. For now, enjoy this video. :)

Gearbox problematic AF. The only time to recommend a ford is when yr sworn enemy wants to go hiking in the jungle. The gearbox will fail and he will be eaten alive.

    • The 10 speed is not problematic at all. The 10 speed is a joint project with GM and Ford. It holds up fine behind even the 650 bhp ZL1 Camaro and will also go behind the 2020 700+bhp Shelby gt500 Mustang. It is also used in much larger trucks and SUV’s in America without any problems.

Too bad no place to use Baja mood here. But I do prefer the F150 Raptor instead.

I think 10 speed gearbox will be ok on this truck and upcoming ranger update, the only downside are the engine..213ps on small engine do sound amazing but in long run the failure rate will be higher.

Not many idiots will buy it for 200k. Especially the safety features are missing while available in XLT and wildtrak

If these safety features are available. I would consider otherwise

      Hi Sergeant,

No, there’s still no rear air vents here, and the front bumper is made from high quality composite. Not metal. Hope that helps!

Thailand selling price at 1.8mBaht which for today’s rate conversation about RM220,000 but it is due to rear coil spring setup truck at Thailand is subjected to higher vehicle tax bracket. If we look at difference of 3.2 ranger wildtrak 3.2 AUD65000 with ranger raptor AUD75000 at Australia where have the same tax bracket for both is about 15% more expensive. Since malaysia’s 3.2 wildtrak is selling at RM140,000 OTR with 6% GST the ranger raptor should be price around RM160,000 or maybe with slightly more after SST and premium markup by SIME DARBY, should be around RM170,000-RM180,000. If Ford Malaysia Manage to come up with a price tag close to Thailand price, it will be a ripped off. Since all the while our pick up price is cheaper than Thailand even despite the higher tax bracket for rear coil spring setup on ranger raptor.
