Kia K3 GT revealed in Korea, BMW Gran Turismo-style

Here’s a surprise from Kia. The carmaker has just revealed first images of the Kia K3 GT in South Korea, where it will be released next month. Design and performance are the unique selling points of the K3 GT, which is the sister car of the K3 sedan (a.k.a. Cerato and Forte) that was unveiled earlier this year.

The K3 GT appears to be Kia’s version of BMW’s line of Gran Turismos like the 6 Series GT. It appears larger and higher than the European-market Kia Ceed five-door C-segment hatchback, which also has a Sportswagon bodystyle. Kia says that the K3 GT will come in both four-door and five-door models – we’re looking at the latter here.

The front end of the GT is similar to the K3 sedan’s, but it gets red accents on the radiator grille, which also houses a GT emblem. At the side, the big hatch gets gloss black wing mirror caps, side skirts and 18-inch multi-spoke wheels, which have red rings on the centre caps. There are mentions of “coupe” when Kia describes the profile – you decide if that’s legit.

At the back, the K3 GT gets the busily designed rear bumper style of the K3 sedan, instead of the more subtle Ceed’s. The two side cutouts, which contain reverse and fog lamps, sandwich a diffuser with a pipe at each end. The horizontal rear lamps with slim LED signatures are unique, and aren’t carried over from the Ceed or Sportswagon. The spoiler that wraps around the rear glass is rather prominent.

The Kia K3 GT is powered by a 1.6 litre Turbo GDI engine with 204 PS and 265 Nm of torque, mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. That gives it a performance advantage over the sedan, which does not have a turbo option. That’s all the images and technical details we have for now. What do you think of the K3 GT?
