W205 Mercedes-Benz C-Class facelift now in Malaysia – C200 Avantgarde, C300 AMG Line, from RM260k

Mercedes-Benz Malaysia (MBM) has officially introduced the W205 Mercedes-Benz C-Class facelift in the country. Spied here recently, the refreshed compact executive sedan – which made its debut in Geneva earlier this year – arrives here in two variant forms, the C 200 Avantgarde and the C 300 AMG Line, both locally-assembled from the get-go. The facelifted Mercedes-AMG C 43 4Matic was also launched at the same time today.

The exterior revisions are subtle – at the front, changes include new bumper designs available for different equipment lines, and the C 200 gets a twin-louvre grille while the AMG Line trim adds on a diamond pin grille on the C 300. Elsewhere, the headlamps now get new internals, and Multibeam LED with 84 diodes and Ultra Range high-beam find their way on to higher-spec’d models.

As for the rear, the rear LED tail lamps retain their shape but get new C-shaped light guides, and the bumper now has a new lower section, with the geometry, trim and exhaust finishers varying dependent on the equipment level. Completing the exterior update are new wheel designs.

Though the layout remains familiar ground, the interior also gets freshened up, the obvious changes being a new steering wheel, a 12.3-inch, 1,920 x 720 pixel-resolution fully digital instrument display which offers three displays styles (Classic, Sport and Progressive) to choose from. The central display also gets a larger 10.25-inch size screen, which the local cars are equipped with.

A new M264 engine makes its way on to the car, and both displacement capacities available for the unit find their way here. The C 200 gets the 1.5 litre twin-scroll turbo unit, which offers 181 hp (184 PS) at 5,800 to 6,100 rpm and 280 Nm of torque at 3,000 to 4,000 rpm.

The 1.5 litre unit features an EQ Boost 48-volt electrical system incorporating a belt-driven starter/alternator, which is able to support the engine with 13 hp (10 kW) and 160 Nm of boost when needed, and performance figures for the variant include a 0-100 km/h time of 7.7 seconds and a 239 km/h top speed.

The C 300 comes with the M264 in its 2.0 litre form, the twin-scroll turbocharged mill offering a slight increase in power output compared to before, with a peak 255 hp (258 PS) available at the same rpm as that on the 1.5 litre engine, making for a 14 hp increase from the 241 hp (245 PS) available from the previous M274 mill.

Maximum torque remains unchanged at 370 Nm, but is now available from 1,800 rpm compared to the 1,300 rpm it was previously, with peak remaining at 4,000 rpm. As expected, the variant is faster, making the run from standstill to 100 km/h in 5.9 seconds and maxing out at 250 km/h.

Both C 200 and C 300 variants are equipped with a 9G-Tronic nine-speed transmission, which is new to the C 300 in its facelifted form, the pre-facelift never featuring it. Also new to the C 300 in its facelifted form is the inclusion of the automaker’s Airmatic suspension.

Equipment-wise, the C 200 comes dressed with an Avantgarde exterior, with the central trim element of the front bumper finished in high-sheen chrome and the air inlets mesh in grained black, and the car rides on 18-inch multi-spoke alloy wheels and 225/45 front and 245/40 rear profile tyres.

Standard equipment on the variant – which in Avantgarde guise features Artico leather upholstery (in a choice of black or grey) and new open-pore grey oak wood trim – includes LED High Performance headlamps, an Agility Control suspension, Keyless Go, an Audio 20 GPS infotainment system as well as smartphone integration with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support.

New items also make their way on to the driver-assistance components list. Aside from active parking assist, reverse camera and Speedtronic cruise control, the C 200 Avantgarde adds on Blind Spot Assist, which operates from around 10 km/h up to 200 km/h.

As for the C 300, the variant features an AMG Line exterior and interior, complete with black open pore ash wood trim. Three interior colours (black, brown and red) are available for the car, which rides on 19-inch five twin-spoke AMG wheels and 225/40 front and 255/35 profile tyres.

The higher specification model adds on Multibeam LED with Ultra Range headlamps, a Burmester sound system to the Audio 20 GPS system and an AMG sports steering wheel in nappa leather.

There’s also an electronic panoramic sunroof, a surround view camera as well as Active Lane Keeping Assist, which warns the driver via pulsed vibrations at the steering wheel when the vehicle is unintentionally drifting out of its lane at speeds between 60 and 200 km/h, and can pull the vehicle back into lane by applying the brakes on one side.

Other safety kit includes seven airbags, active brake assist and autonomous emergency braking as standard on both models.

The Mercedes-Benz C 200 Avantgarde is priced at RM259,888, while the C 300 AMG Line goes for RM304,888, both on-the-road without insurance. That’s a slight increase of RM4k over the corresponding pre-facelift examples (the C 200 AMG Line and C 350 e AMG Line plug-in hybrid) at the point prior to the removal of GST.

As usual, MBM has financing options available for the facelifted C-Class – its Flex-C financing offers a variety of packages, and starts from RM2,688 (based on a three-year tenure and downpayment of 22% for the C 200 Avantgarde). Until December 31, all Flex-C financing contracts will include a complimentary first year tyre and rim insurance package.

Price is not too bad for the C300 considering the kit count. Air suspension, active lane keep assist, Burmester, autonomous braking. All these make the BMW 330e look rather kosong spec. But the 330e is an entire Rm46k cheaper, and probably drives better too, though ride probably can’t match (in theory) the bagged C300. But Rm46k is still not an insignificant figure. With the F30 getting a bit long in the tooth, and people anxiously waiting for the G20 and Volvo S60, which are both probably still a year away from Malaysia, Mercedes might just sell a load of the C Class with little competition (A4 looks like the old car, the IS is way overpriced, the XE is too cramped inside and has too many cheap plastics).

Probably an indication that New Gov will be phasing out the hybrid/EV CKD incentives for the benefit of P3.

Cheaper rosdtax for the C200 owners but meh, the new G20 will slaughter this FL soon enough. The interior immediately looks old especially when the new A is here.

      Soon? How soon?

Mercedes played their card well. They are introducing “new cars” earlier than their competitor.

By the time G20 make its way here, MBM would have sold shitloads of C-Class.

Right now, people in this market segment already convinced that MB is better in terms of reliability compared to Audi and BMW. Check the sales record since last year January till now, BMW can’t beat MB sales record even when BMW is offering free service and warranty for 5 years compared to Mercedes; 4 years warranty NO FREE SERVICE. Owh have I mentioned that MB Cars are far more expensive than BMW.

In business, the best product isn’t necessarily the best selling product.

But the best known product & the highly available product stand a bigger chance to be the best selling product.

The F30 is still a good car. Handles well, and rides better than the non-bagged C Class. Its just that BMW Malaysia has limited the choice to only 2 cars. Not even M3 is available. With such limited choice, what does a prospective buyer get? Well, the C Class is the clear winner. The A4 is a nice car, but it looks too much like the old car. Some people might think you’re driving the old A4. The rest are just too left field, like the Kia Stinger, Lexus IS, Jag XE, Infiniti whatever, etc. If only BMW Malaysia still sold the 330i and gave it foldable rear seats, the C Class would get more competition here.

Nothing against the G20. I can say it’s the better car compared to the C-Class. Better driving dynamics, great transmission mapping compared to crappy merc’s 9gtronic and sportier looks.

But people who’s willing to spend 250k – 300k are not the ones who judge these cars for the above mentioned quality. Most of them make this purchase because of the better offers in terms of price per kit, availability, and trust issue. You see more MB cars on the road. Ask any MB owners if they willing to switch to BMW in the near future, you’ll get your answer right away.

Like I said, the best marketed product (the highly known product) will have a higher chance to be the best seller.

I am drving Merc currently, tak boleh sabar nak tukar pada G20, it looks sportier, and for the first time I feel the BMW interior has changed and freshened up, Merc to me a good car, but maintenance is expensive bro, and the C class interior now looks dated and the rear seats are shorter than BMW and not that comfortable

  • Those LED reflectors on C200 look horrid. Maybe it looks better in the flesh or at night. Wonder if it has the same functionality at Audi’s matrix headlamps on the A4

A4 seems better equipped, more power than c200, adjustable dampers etc. But the 330e has even more power and better handling.. damn, headache

Active lane keep assist here isn’t truly active, it only brakes one side in an attempt to prevent the car from crossing lines.

Driving Assistance Package Plus (optional in developed countries where customers get to choose what options they want) incorporates Distronic radar cruise control with stop and go and Drive Pilot, which itself includes truly-active lane assist (with steering intervention to steer you back into lane). DAP+ also includes active blind spot assist, which not only warns you but also steers you away from objects in the blind spot. The package also throws in AEB with cross-traffic support and rear-end collision mitigation plus pedestrian detection, all of which are absent in Malaysia.

Come on. Even the new Camry 2.5 (any Toyota with the Safety sense package) and Proton X70 (in its highest spec) and Honda models with the Honda Sensing suite has most of these stuff (most crucially, radar cruise control which allows the car to maintain a set distance between you and the vehicle in front, as well as automatically stopping and going, along with lane assist with active steering intervention). Meanwhile, Volvo has all these stuff as standard (except the XC60 T5). It’s disgraceful for MB that even an E-class doesn’t have all these.

When will we be given the privilege to choose whatever options we want, just like in other countries?

I am reading this on Jul 2019 and agree with you. As for XC60, I believe the ACC and LKAS are available for T5. As current owner of W203, I dont think I will continue with Mercedes. Here I come Volvo! Even X-Trail and Mazda 3 now have the features.
