Alpine A110 goes on display at Singapore Motor Show

It’s not often you get up close with the new Alpine A110, but that is exactly what is being displayed at the 2019 Singapore Motor Show. The two-door coupe, which was first previewed by the Alpine Vision concept, rivals the Porsche Cayman and draws upon the heritage of the similarly named classic.

With a rear mid-engine, rear-wheel drive layout, a 1.8 litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine powers the A110, producing 252 PS and 320 Nm of torque, paired with a Getrag seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.

In terms of performance, a bone standard A110 weighing 1,080 kg will offer a power-to-weight ratio of 233 PS per tonne, a 0-100 km/h time of just 4.5 seconds, and an electronically-limited top speed of 250 km/h.

Drivers will also get to choose from several driving modes – Road, Sport and Track – changing the settings for the powertrain, steering, suspension, ESC intervention and even what is being displayed on the digital instrument cluster.

The styling is very much inspired by its much, much older descendant, with throwback headlamps that mimic the rally spotlights of the original. Even the car’s body is shaped to remind us of the WRC racer, although the rear end is modernised with modern-looking taillights.

On the inside, attention has been paid to keep the weight down and to ensure the driving experience is prioritised. For instance, the bucket seats are manually adjusted, as is the Alcantara-lined steerign wheel. You still get luxuries such as an infotainment system and air-conditioning, as well as some buttons that appear to be from the Renault parts bin.

The A110 will be sold by Singapore Alpine dealer, Wearnes Automotive, and is expected to be priced at SGD285,000 when it goes on sale.

Wow SGD285k is small change to most Singaporeans, considering even a normal ranking Government servant in Singapore earns SGD8000 a month.

Lucky Singaporeans. Cars are so cheap. Toyota CHR is SGD65k plus COE SGD35k. Only SGD100k for brand new Toyota CHR

Design is so dull. Front like 90s FTO, rear like cheapened Maserati; already look outdated without leaving the showroom. Its a loss-making brand from the start.

This model’s predecessor is not a “much, much older descendant”. When unsure how’s word is to be used, choose something simpler. It’ll make reading the article a less painful affair.

  • According to driving reviews, it nails it as a satisfyingly quick and enjoyably agile ride. Looks nice enough. Should add choice and competition to the world of MX5, Z4 etc.

You have to be a fool to buy this, almost as foolish as buying a Maserati
