Malaysia-China Amazing Trip: Proton X70 owners drive 2,909 km in five days, convoy en route to Hangzhou

Sometimes, the spirit of adventure can truly embolden. Take for example this group of Proton X70 owners who embarked on a once-in-a-lifetime trip to China – by land. That’s right, a total of nine units of the SUV are en route to Hangzhou, China, where they will visit the headquarters of the Zhejiang Geely Holding Group before making the round trip back.

The ambitious road trip, called Malaysia-China Amazing Trip, will take approximately 33 days and pass through 13 cities across four countries (Malaysia, Thailand, Laos and China). The convoy, which also consists of several other vehicles, is organised by the Borneo Automobile Leisure Touring Team and the Kunming Scenery-Customer International Travel. For those planning a similar road trip, here’s what you can expect.

On the departing day, the convoy drove 540 km north to the city of Hatyai, Thailand. The travel time is 12 hours, though this included a scheduled lunch break and quick vehicle inspection in Juru. The convoy then crossed the border at Padang Besar and into Thailand.

The second day was a much longer drive – 740 km to be exact, from Hatyai to Hua Hin. On day three, the group drove 619 km from Hua Hin to Tak, where they crossed the Thai border into Myanmar.

The fourth day saw the convoy drive from Tak to Chiang Khong, covering a total distance of 580 km over 10 hours. Here, they made a stop at the famous tourist destination known as Magic Hill on Highway 105, before ending up at a hotel facing the Mekong River and Laos. The following morning, they drove 430 km from Chiang Khong to Mengla, a county in the Yunnan province of China.

All said and done, that’s just five days worth of driving. A simple math puts the total driving distance at 2,909 km, which is close to a quarter (3,250 km) of the 13,000-km journey. The convoy departed on February 26 and is expected to reach Hangzhou soon. We will be joining them (by flight, thankfully) to celebrate their journey, so if you have any questions for them, comment below!

    • Would love to ask those amazing roadtrippers. Compared to our Lebuhraya Utara Selatan R&R pit stops with hot steaming nasi lemak, fresh tropical fruits in asam boi, ice cream and donuts store, orang asli wild honey etc.

Howz the rest areas like in Indochine?

Lucky China has given us such a reliable car. For 30 years Proton could not give us good and high safety spec. we needed a foreign Government and foreign car company to give this to the rakyat of Malaysia

    • And what fuel did they use in Thailand and Laos as Proton had said its X70 cannot use Gasohol… Benzine 95 is very hard to find esp in Thailand. Few and far in between stations are selling benzine.

  • What questions would we ask. How about Proton X70 Pan Borneo roadtrip next?

Mixed feeling of trepidation, then exuberance, euphoria and tears of joy. Malaysia had been reborn. Proton had been reborn. Amazing bright new dawn

    • If use Aruz, the occupants would have sore backs and most likely throw up at every stop due to the bumpy ride. The road conditions aren’t exactly good especially the Thai-Laos-China stretch.

More importantly, will Aruz last the journey to Thai-Laos border? I have very little faith in it.

It’s a round trip journey, so yes they are driving back. Reaching to Geely HQ is just half the journey.

How many times of refuelling? How many litres were used? How far was the journey? What is the average speed?

Any problem using petrol in those other countries? What were the RON rating used? Feel the same with Malaysian petrol or not?

Any problem with the X70 along the journey?

Is it advisable to do such trip to other Malaysians?

  • Congratulations to the convoy in making this historic journey.

I have done the drive like many others too to the Laos / China border. I am curious when the article mentioned the car crossed into Myanmar supposingly via Mae Sot and then crossed into Laos via Chiang Kong which is located west of Mae Sot. Probably the car did not cross into Myanmar.

And a reply to Yeah, I have driven twice to Boten / Mengla border once with another Perodua Alza from Vientaine/Nong Khai to Boten through Kasi new road and back into Thailand via Chiang Kong/Huayxay with 4 occupants all good and the car survive 7000km return with the lowest temperature recorded at 3Dec Celcius between Kasi and Luang Prabang.

try the borneo roads next time, no need to go international. see how proton cars can stand against the brutal borneo roads from sematan/lundu (sarawak) to tawau (sabah). ask dr li chunrong to tag along. enjoy the ride.
