Malaysia vehicle sales data for February 2019 by brand

As has been traditionally the case, February has never been an outstanding month for vehicle sales, and so it was again this year. The short working month and the Chinese New Year holiday period made for a slow month, with just 39,838 vehicles delivered, an 18% reduction (or 8,612 units) from January.

Here’s a quick breakdown on how most brands performed last month. Most brands saw lower numbers last month, including eight of the top 10. Market leader Perodua (-14.3%) as well as second-placed Honda (-20.2%) and third-placed Proton (-23.0%) all saw a drop in volume, as did the likes of Nissan (-44.8%) and Mazda (-56.6%).

Other companies that saw a drop in numbers were Mitsubishi (-42.0%), Volkswagen (-53.1%), Hyundai (-61.5%) and Renault (-69.8%). Among the few brands that had cause to cheer in February were Toyota (+49.7%) and BMW (+5.6%).

The latter was the only one having a strong showing in the premium segment – the soft month for Mercedes-Benz (-44.5%) sees it just ahead by a whisker in YTD volume terms, but there’s still a long way to go, of course. Elsewhere, it was also a softer month for Volvo (-11.9%).

Looks like Ah Bengs have more following since Honda is out-selling Toyotas 2 to 1. UMW not doing a good job. In other countries Toyotas outsell Hondas.

Proton’s 6 months hype already over. Usually any new car launch, by 6 months, the car will sizzle down. No more hot.

From now on, Proton sales will be very biasa only for X70

Last year Proton sold less than 60,000 cars. It was losing money.

This year, Proton must sell how many cars to make money?? I think at least 120,000 – 150,000??

1 sale of X70 equals to Porfit gained by selling 8 Saga.

It does not matter to Proton, as long as X70 is selling well.

    • You can see how bias it is. It is carrying more report about Geely & Lynx, cars that has no present in the country then cars sold here. For eg, Toyota Yaris pricing has come out but you don’t see any post about it here.

      Hik,hik,hik…
Take a deep breath…have a drink of cold water.
I know its hard to accept that people are buying China cars more than the ‘usual’ cars.

I understand its hard to accept at first. Dont worry, the cycle will be like this : Bashing – state of denial – syok sendiri – roll over and die.
Unless therr is a ‘realise and change’ in the cycle.

At least last year, whatever profit Proton made went to Proton itself. This year, whatever Proton X70 sales made, all profits go back to China completely because car is CBU China made

      • I don’t mind sending money back to China because we know they will use it to develop Proton further. They will also make Proton R&D as the hub for vehicle research here.

We gave money back to Japan for 30 years and what did we get? Still the same lousy cars that Japan don’t use. I went to Japan and I never seen a single Rush anywhere that I traveled. Why is Japan treating us like second class human beings?

Early days yet to see any trend, what with some new launches coming.

The only sure bet is P2 will continue to be volume leader due to the cheap/affordable pricing.
