The folks at BMW like to call the X5 The Boss. The moniker is apt – the original E53 X5 was massive both in size and impact when it surfaced before the turn of the millennium. But is the X5 still as large today? Staring at the latest G05 on Wednesday, it doesn’t seem so. Cars have definitely grown over the years and perhaps we’ve become desensitised.
That’s in Malaysia. Imagine the X5 in America, where everything is super sized, from burgers to trucks. Seeing Munich’s big guy next to full-size American SUVs (Chevy Suburban, Cadillac Escalade, Lincoln Navigator etc) will make you ask what took BMW so long to come up with the X7.
The G07 X7 is based on a modified X5 platform and aims to offer 7 Series luxury in a big SUV body. BMW is targeting cars like the Mercedes-Benz GLS, Lexus LX and Range Rover, among others. North America and China are expected to be the biggest markets for the X7.
At 5,151 mm long, 2,000 mm wide and 1,805 mm tall, the X7 is 229 mm longer and 60 mm taller than the latest X5. The three-row SUV’s 3,105 mm wheelbase is 130 mm longer than the G05’s.
The X7 is a full seven-seater with adult seating in all rows, but for the first time in a BMW SUV, a six-seat option comprising two middle row individual seats is available. Malaysia is however expected to get the regular three-seat bench in the middle row, in xDrive40i form.
The base petrol option is powered by a 3.0 litre turbocharged inline-six with 340 hp and 450 Nm of torque from 1,500 to 5,200 rpm. Paired to an eight-speed automatic transmission and the firm’s rear-biased xDrive all-wheel drive system, the X7 xDrive40i is good for 0-100 km/h in 6.1 seconds and a top speed of 245 km/h. Not bad for an over 2.3-tonne giant with every conceivable feature in the carmaker’s arsenal.
The 7 Series of SUVs is available in M Sport trim or the Design Pure Excellence package you see here – I can’t believe I’m saying this, but the latter’s chrome around the body and shiny multi-spoke wheels seem right. Likewise, BMW’s current penchant for large nostrils might stand out a bit too much on other cars, but the proportions are appropriate here, IMHO.
In the video above, BMW X7 project manager Joerg Wunder takes us through the main selling points of the G07, as well as the final details. The New Boss is coming to Malaysia soon.

Even X5 now already lompat RM388k to RM640k.
All over the world, car prices are going down. But in Malaysia, car prices are going higher and higher.
When BMW Malaysia didn’t announce the price of BMW X7, you are assuming giving even higher price. Always come here to tell lies in every paultan article. I told you please dont ever give fake news again. We already fed up with your comments and everyone have no peace because of you. Thats shows that you only know how to protect your carmakers like Hyundai, Japanese Carmakers and Perodua with better comments and don’t care other carmakers in which you bash other carmakers. You are actually hurting other people’s feeling including me
Nissan X=Trail is a better car than this BMW X5. It also has 7 seater.
Though anti-ph but I’m compelled to correct your statement. The rm388k is the price for X5 xDrive40e which is a phev comes with tax incentive for ckd version. Meanwhile the rm640k price tag is for the new X5 xDrive40i M sport CBU which always as usual much more expensive than ckd version plus it doesn’t entitled for tax relief. As such it’s not an apple to apple kind of comparison so need to wait a couple more years for a phev ckd version coming onshore for cheaper X5.
Bro, it won’t take longer years to arrive CKD X5. Since new CBU X5 will be launching in August in Malaysia, it will take either several months or 1 year or 1.5 years to launch new CKD BMW X5
Sack all of the designers. Too lazy to think different front design, x3 5, 7 all same ones
BMW X7 is too big for our roads and car park bays because our DBKL too inefficient and got no proper town planning
