2019 Mazda 3 arrives at Malaysian showroom – 1.5L Sedan, 2.0L Hatchback High Plus; price from RM140k

2019 Mazda 3 arrives at Malaysian showroom – 1.5L Sedan, 2.0L Hatchback High Plus; price from RM140k

The all-new Mazda 3 has yet to be officially launched in Malaysia, but the fourth-generation model is already on display at the Bermaz showroom in Glenmarie. As we’ve previously reported, the C-segment car comes fully imported (CBU) from Japan, and will be offered in three variants.

The base variant is available as a hatchback or sedan, and the latter is what’s being shown here. Under the bonnet, there’s a SkyActiv-G 1.5 litre naturally-aspirated four-cylinder petrol engine that develops 118 hp at 6,000 rpm and 153 Nm of torque at 4,000 rpm, with power going to the front wheels via a SkyActiv-Drive six-speed automatic transmission. Pricing for this variant starts from RM139,770 on-the-road without insurance.

Equipment-wise, the base variant comes with automatic LED projector headlamps with bulb-type daytime running lights, LED taillights, 16-inch alloy wheels, single-zone manual air-conditioning, a seven-inch TFT-LCD digital instrument cluster display, an 8.8-inch central display linked to a Mazda Connect infotainment system with eight speakers, fabric upholstery, windscreen-projected head-up display, a soft-touch dash and door cards, plus manually operated front seats.

As for driving-related features, passive cruise control is also included, along with an automatic brake hold function tied to the electronic parking brake. There’s also a Sport mode switch that increases the throttle response while adjusting the shift points of the transmission.

Unfortunately, the middle 2.0 High variant – available only as a sedan – was not seen on location, but we know it retails from RM150,059. As the variant name suggests, this one gets a 2.0 litre version of the SkyActiv-G, which serves up 162 hp at 6,000 rpm and 213 Nm of torque at 4,000 rpm, also with an auto gearbox. The 2.0 High improves upon the base variant by adding on keyless entry, leather upholstery, a sunroof, frameless rearview mirror and dual-zone climate control. Unlike the base variant, there’s rear air-con vents present here as well.

We also got to see the range-topping 2.0 High Plus, which is priced from RM160,059, in hatchback guise, but the variant is also available as a sedan. This particular unit is finished in Polymetal Grey, which is a colour that is unique to the hatchback, and rides on larger 18-inch wheels compared to the 16-inch units on the base and 2.0 High.

The kit list for the 2.0 High Plus further adds to what the 2.0 High already comes with by including LED projector headlamps with a ring-shaped LED DRL signature (also on the taillights) for greater visual presence. Other improvements include a 10-way powered driver seat with two-setting memory function.

1.5L base variant (left), 2.0L High Plus (right)

You’ll also get four front parking sensors, along with a full complement of Mazda i-Activsense safety and driver assistance systems. These include Adaptive Front-lighting System (AFS), High Beam Control (HBC), Blind Spot Monitoring (BSM), Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA), Lane Departure Warning System (LDWS), Lane Keep Assist System (LAS), Driver Attention Alert (DAA), Smart Brake Support (SBS) and Mazda Radar Cruise Control (MRCC), the last item being the first time Bermaz has offered the driver assistance feature on a Mazda model.

In terms of safety kit, all variants come with traction control, an anti-lock braking system (ABS), electronic brake-force distribution (EBA), emergency brake assist (EBA), hill launch assist (HLA), Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) and seven airbags (front, side, curtain and a new addition being for the driver’s knee).

We’ll have complete specifications of every Mazda 3 variant when the model is launched on July 17, which is just a few days away. For now, do check out our gallery, deep dive and first impressions posts of the new Mazda 3, and tell us what you think of the equipment that comes with the variants on display?

This is a crazy price for a small C segment car. Few years ago, can buy Honda Accord and Toyota Camry at this price.

Few more years ahead, Mazda will even overtake Mercedes and BMW prices in Malaysia

Wow the base spec really kosong spec. No keyless entry, manual seats and the AC is also manual and this goes for….140k? Better off with a CX5 TBH. The High Plus spec is the one to go for but better wait for it’s price to drop by 30k when CKD kicks in. Maybe that time we could have the electric front passenger seat packaged into it.

C segment with D segment price but with B segment specs especially the 1.5 (1.5NA, Manual aircond, manual&fabric seat, no keyless, bulb DRL, torsion beam suspension). is much more value to add 10k for the much powerful 2.0 engine, keyless, leather, dual zone, rear aircond etc ..

Not sure why is everyone blaming bermaz for jacking up the price. It is a CBU, no longer a CKD. Unless they decide to produce Mazda 3 in Malaysia, the price will stay. Been to the showroom, the car interior is very classy with leatherette everywhere. Soft leatherette. I don’t race my car and mostly city use, hence I think it is very suitable for me. The interior is more premium than honda accord. The only thing that it is losing out from B segment is the engine and multi link torso beam.

Like or Dislike: Thumb up 7 Thumb down 11
    • Dude, you do know Bermaz still decide the profit margins right? The interior is still typically Mazda-crampy. No need to mention Accord because even the City feels as big as the 3 inside.

Yes crampy. But I’m only fetching myself. Hence it was of no concern to me. Like I said if you need to fetch 4 ppl all the time, then you may give more weightage to spaciousness. As to profit margin, i would say the reason for the increase in price is mainly due to the import tax. I’m not saying they did not increase their profit margin. If it was not important tax, they probably will price at 110-130k. If that is the case, will you still blame the price for being too high? I think everyone will be less upset, hence the main reason is still the decision to make it CBU rather than CKD that upset most people.

I think this article is doing injustice to Mazda.

Mazda has been moving into another strategic direction for the last couple of years. It has been moving towards luxury (think audi, merc). This has been mentioned by many auto reviewers worldwide.

Paultan did a bad job of not explaining this despite being shown Mazda’s future roadmap.

A full and detailed article is needed.

Then Mazda has a branding problem. Even Toyota with their high end cars (think Crown) still has trouble breaking past that cheap image barrier and resort to creating Lexus subbrand but essentially using the same cars in order to break into the luxury car segment.

I don’t know which retired designer from the 80’s that they managed to convince to design the interior. The aircon vents are hideous and old fashioned

  • Is Bermaz planning to CKD the CX 30 instead?
cuz the production line is left empty

Like or Dislike: Thumb up 1 Thumb down 0
    • Apparently that is the plan. But they will start with CKD CX-8 first, in addition to the CX-5.
The mass sedan market is gradually replaced by either SUVs or the luxury small sedan. Gradually you ll see cars like Accord no longer be CKD… Camry and Mazda6 are examples…

  • Hurry hurry go grab the current version 2.0 model with cheaper pricing compare to upcoming Mazda3 with Mazda2 1.5L engine before it sold out!

I’m driving current 3rd gen Mazda 3 with 2.0L, from new(2016) car till now I feel the car start going under power(I’m stick to ron97 all the way), I can’t imagine the upcoming Mazda 3 will feel how?

Do you guys really think that the prices are all set by Bermaz, Honda, Toyota…etc? Most of them have NO CHOICE if they even want market share in Malaysia.

One thing Najib did right was slowly reducing car prices.

But now, basically you have Geely/Proton coming in to kill every single carmaker segment that is not local.

X70 is just the beginning, soon the X50, then the X30. Then all those car makers will give Malaysia the middle finger and pull out.

In the end of the day, for all those talking about value this or value that, just buy Proton. Cause that will be the most “value” and the only brand left in Malaysia. That and Perodua. lols!

Calm down. This is CBU. Previous gen CBU launched around Rm140k as well. Yes the spec is a big letdown as you’re only getting the base tin kosong 1.5 with the same amount.

    Just wait for the CKD.

ec, there would have been prominent announcements and a big hoo-ha if the govt increase the tax for car. In the absence of this we can assume that the car tax has not changed so the Mazda 3’s high prices are due to Bermaz’s corporate greed.
