Borgward BX5 now on sale in Malaysia – 1.4T 2WD and 2.0T AWD powertrains; 5 variants; price from RM119k

It appears the Borgward BX5 has gone on sale in Malaysia, as the compact SUV was recently spotted at Juro Auto City in Penang along with an official price list. Sold as a locally-assembled (CKD) model, buyers get to choose from two powertrain options and five variants split between them, with prices starting from RM118,950 on-the-road without insurance.

The five-seater, which measures in at 4,490 mm long, 1,877 mm wide and 1,675 mm tall, with a 2,685 mm-long wheelbase, was first previewed locally in late April along with the BX7, a left-hand drive example being the display vehicle.

The turbocharged engine line-up starts with a 1.4 litre four-cylinder that serves up 150 PS at 5,500 rpm and 250 Nm from 1,750-4,000 rpm, and is joined by a 2.0 litre four-pot that makes 224 PS at 5,500 rpm and 300 Nm from 1,500-4,500 rpm.

Both engines come with a six-speed automatic transmission as standard, but all-wheel drive is only available with the larger-capacity engine – the 1.4 litre powerplant is front-wheel drive only.

Two variants – 1.4T and 1.4T (TS) – are associated with the 1.4 litre engine, priced at RM118,950 and RM130,950 respectively. In terms of equipment, both come with automatic halogen headlamps with LED DRLs, LED taillights, keyless entry, an eight-inch touchscreen infotainment system, single-zone air-conditioning, a 4.2-inch instrument cluster display, built-in toll reader and cruise control.

It’s only aesthetics where they differ, as the 1.4T (TS) adds on something called the TS Line package, along with a diamond front grille, red door sills, a centre console cover and fancier floor mats. There’s also exterior door visors and security window tint included with the 1.4T (TS).

Meanwhile, the BX5 with the 2.0 litre engine comes in 2.0T, 2.0T (TS) and 2.0T (CRS) guises, with the first two roughly mimicking the 1.4T and 1.4T (TS) in terms of equipment. Improvements here include front parking sensors, a powered tailgate that can be remotely operated (including for the windows), power-folding side mirrors with puddle lamps and dual-zone air-conditioning with rear vents. The 2.0T goes for RM138,950, while the 2.0T (TS) retails at RM150,950.

As for the 2.0T (CRS), it gets uprated floor mats that aren’t standard on the 2.0T (TS), but loses out on the TS Line package. Other standard items with the range-topping variant (priced at RM156,950) include glass coating and matte colour wrapping. On the topic of wheels, the brochure states 19-inch wheels for the all the 1.4T (TS) and 2.0 (TS) except the 2.0T (CRS), which appears to get larger 20-inch units. However, it’s not mentioned what the 1.4T and 2.0T variants get, although they likely come with 17- and 18-inch wheels as seen on these cars.

All variants come with six airbags (front, side and curtain), vehicle stability control, ABS, EBD, brake assist, an electronic parking brake (with auto hold), tyre pressure monitoring system, hill start assist and an electronic differential system – hill descent control is only for 2.0 litre variants.

Based on the material provided, buyers will also benefit from Borgward Privileges, which include an eight-year/unlimited mileage warranty, five years free service (including labour and parts), a Borgward RedBlack Card for two years of free petrol, roadside assistance (with free towing) and RedBlack Premier (cashback for five years).

Good we bring in more China cars. Since our Proton failed, at least let people who succeed in making cars come to Malaysia and sell their cars here

So Expensive for a China car. But I don’t blame them. They see proton pricing at RM123k, so, they also hantam over the RM100k mark

In actual fact, in their own country, such cars are half the price. Geely Boyue is only RM60k

      • Expensive or not is not big problem. What matters is the car quality and kit that comes with it. For Proton X70, the asking price of RM99k~123k it gets so much worth in the car.

This Borgward? Not so much. Price is between X70 and CRV yet specs is not even close. X70 still has the best value for SUVs at the moment.

The Aruz, an ancient small ‘SUV’ with museum-spec platform and powertrain already selling for 80k. Remember, the BX5 is bigger and better than the Aruz in every way except that Perodua is qualified for national carmaker tax cut.

Wow 8 years warranty is certainly the way forward but for the price they are asking…it won’t work. Who wants 20 inch rims on a low to mid range SUV? The CX5 had 19 inches and already people are saying the world is ending. Further more at 150k you can have a Xtrail with driver assists.

You are right about the 20 inch. They should offer the downgrade to 17 / 16 if possible. Buyers with budget for for 150k might not realized the cost of those tires.

      Specs to specs comparison

Mazda 2,0 GLS engine churns out 162 HP at 6,000 RPM and 210 NM of torque at 4,000 RPM

Borgward BX5 2.0T engine churns out 224 PS at 5,500 rpm and 300 Nm of torque from 1,500-4,500 rpm.

      O-100 km/h test CX5 2.0 GLS is 10.4 seconds and top speed is 182 km/h whereas

Borgward BX5 2.0T 0-100km/h test is about 9 seconds and top speed is 190 km/h.

      Price point for
      Mazda CX5 GLS 2.0 RM 149K
      Borgward BX5 2.0T RM 139K

      No of gear ratio
      CX5 2.0 GLS — 6 speeds
      BX5 2.0T — 7 speeds

So looks like Skyactive Technology of CX5 actually is called OLD ACTIVE TECHNOLOGY

      Reliablity
Mazda CX5 — How sure it is bulletproof reliability? suspension bushes wear out very fast …

      In terms of Sales
CX5 not selling in large volume in USA compare to VW Tiguan , T & H yet.

Based upon above findings , CX5 2.0 GLS did not turn out to be good buy either.

CX5 with 2.5T engine does not handle as well like the 2.0 version — source car guide reviews

CX5 had got the smallest boot capacity ( 442 Liter with seat up compare to CRV 522L ,Tiguan 615L , Outlander 477L , Tucson 488L, BORGWARD BX5 500L

When it comes to SUV , Boot Space is very critical as a determining factor of purchase which not every buyer will consider buying a CX5 ( lack of boots space) to meet their expectations

Even if this car does contain a little bit of German flavour, the Chinese made X70 is a much better car. This is not even considering of the price advantage, CBU vs CKD.

Boyue came out without any Swedish flavour and is proven to be a better car than this.

I was initially interested with the Borgward but was however disappointed as I try to locate the so call ‘showroom’ at glenmarie jalan u1/46 but it was just a close building with no indication that a Borgward dealer is there. I noticed a Foton service center opposite but was only having the Foton van piled up infront. Very disappointing. I think I’d settled for a SUV with a reknown brand and proper showroom and service center. No point of giving many years of warranty but difficult to locate the showroom or service center. – DISAPPOINTED.
