Ever since Proton reintroduced the Saga back in 2008, its entry-level model has been produced strictly in four-door sedan form only. And rightly so, given that the body style remains popular in this market, and sales of other variants may not justify the extra development costs. But what if our minds were allowed to wonder a little bit – what if the national carmaker continued to build the Aeroback?
Well, Theophilus Chin has let his imagination run wild and has put pen to paper (or at least, the Pen tool in Photoshop), giving rise to the renders you see here. At first, this might just seem like the facelifted Saga that has been truncated at the rear, but there are a number of distinct design changes as well.
Firstly, the roofline has been smoothened and lengthened, resulting in taller rear windows and the addition of a black C-pillar appliqué not unlike the Wira Aeroback. The window frames are also fully blacked out for a more streamlined appearance.
Moving to the rear of the car, the tail lights have also been redesigned – they are now joined in the middle and feature a continuous light guide that stretches across the entire width of the car, a nice touch. The Proton script has been moved upwards as a result, and the gloss black lip spoiler completes the look. Theo has also cheekily added a black extension to the side sills.
It’s good to dream, but the chances of this car actually entering production is practically non-existent. Under Geely, Proton is rebuilding itself with an eye on cost effectiveness, and an Aeroback variant would likely be too similar to the sedan to generate any meaningful sales volume. But what do you think? Sound off in the comments after the jump.

No need China Geely ,with Theo
Proton Saga Aeroback, the real Game changer.
Until today, Perodua Bezza is still the real game changer and it have been proven by sales data. Proton is just wasting their budget to keep game over Saga alive
Poor guy. At least you tried. How pathetic somebody can still be…. :) You speak of game over and your shitty company until today still cannot stop Saga sales from increasing.
Enough with these freaking ‘rendered’ thing.. No use,no purpose.. waste of time. It’s not gonna happen! Enough of Theo’hippo’philus’s imaginary world!
wha’st up with the poor continuity?
The rear doors are completeley different in the two renders.
well,i just see one is the left side door, and other is right side door, you are pretty well blinded by the success of this car rite/?
This game over sedan should have been discontinued years ago. Now the FL will fail as Perodua will launch their game changing Axia FL soom
The biggest failure is you copy and paste the same comments. Trolling fail!
Is making a beautiful car taking a lot of cost? Does it mean cheap car has to be ugly?
For those who cannot afford to buy BMW X6.
Cheap like ugly Axia, Bezza, Alza, Aruz and Myvi.
To answer AZAMIRUDDIN’s question; yes, making a “beautiful” car can sometimes be expensive. Take the doors for example. Let’s compare Mazda 2 to the new Saga.
Take note of the wheel arch on both. A portion of the Mazda’s flat wheel arch goes beyond the door gap and onto the rear door, whereas for the Saga it is separated from the door completely. Mazda’s approach allows them to size the flat wheel arch section as they please, for styling and structural purposes. However, they need a more precise die pattern for the door, because it has to be aligned with the arch on the rear fender. If they have to align it a lot, the door gap might not be uniform between both sides. Also the die for the rear door cannot be allowed to wear out and cause a disparity between the rear fender and door. So things can get quite expensive.
On the Saga the flat wheel arch is completely isolated on the rear fender. Any minor die wear won’t cause any noticeable disparity, and they only need to worry about making the door gap uniform on both sides.
That’s just for the doors.
well said.. all those things will related to the development cost, they need to set some limitation in order to control the price..ie complex design require complex mold thus higher the mold fabrication price.
Which is why quality comes at a cost no matter what. Yet most Malaysians are oblivious to that fact and expect Proton to make Mazda2 at Saga prices.
Saga GT? Wait what happened to the SAGA Wagon/Estate that made rounds few years back? Call it the Saga Campung
i’ll definitely love this model, but i also strongly agree with the first sentence in the last paragraph. people nowadays seek for safety and space in vehicles, so the comeback of Aeroback seems pretty unwanted.
An aeroback of the SAGA would not be wise as the market segment for hatchbacks in Malaysia is poor. However, if Proton should decide to realign their low cost entry models, it would be better to retain the SAGA sedan, Persona Sedan, followed by their next generation CBU’s.
IMHO, low cost entry models like the SAGA should be the bread and butter of PROTON, whilst SUV’s should be the high profit-low volume models. Perodua has effectively cornered the low budget, high volume market so it only makes sense to reposition PROTON. Cheap SUV’s are the way for now.
There is a limit to selling cheap, and the way Perodua does it is not the way to go. Going cheap doesn’t mean one should compromise in safety or preventing from giving customers value for money. To be honest I would not consider Aruz as a SUV. The proportions are all wrong, and more towards a raised MPV. Now if you want to talk about cheap and well featured SUV, wait for X50 to arrive.
6000 units booking 2019 new FL Saga.
Just 20 days already got 6000 bookings?! Wow! Must be a new record for quickest shoot up. Well done Proton! Now I worried if both your factories can cope with the demands. C’mon guys start the hiring process immediately, even sucking in idle Perodua workers if you have to. :-)
Aeroback wun work well with Saga short wheelbase. Need to be at least Gen2 level in sleekness or rear headroom wud suffer. Since Saga3 butt is shorter than Saga1/Wira, it dun look all that much different. If want sleek 4door coupe, better revive Gen2, cuz even Egypt continues to buy them by the hundreds. Now a Saga3 coupe with that headline wud be something.
hoping for a SAGA Compact crossover SUV
The car is too short to be an Aeroback…..
The ground clearance looks a bit too high – like an SUV.
Is it intentional due to the constant flash-floods in Klang Valley?
To all car media test drivers, please tell proton stop making Aeroback.Proton, your staff is your asset, spend more to them for them create value to the company and they will do their best toward company. Hear what customer complaint and hear what your staff that has in their mind to make improvement for the company. Focus more on quality issue ,reliability and customer service all over Malaysia for the existing model…sekian.
Proton Knight revived?
Good rendering image.. the rear door and tail light design is good. I think the word proton should be remove. Just use a simple proton emblem.
Stop dreaming… Proton & belting berpisah tiada. Selagi proton guna belting, selagi itulah aku tak akan membelinya. Wakenup from sleep la proton. Selain proton aku tak tahu brand apa lagi guna belting. Hai la proton, 80-an punya teknologi.
Apa tu belting?
Typical narrow minds. You are pedantic about something you change every 90k kms instead of things that you can appreciate every day like the Saga’s better safety, NVH and ride handling than contemporaries like the Bezza.
still waiting for Saga Wagon
render pun nak jadi bahan blog ke?
Then you better skip next time other car magazines show renders of upcoming Ferrari, Lambo or any supercar.
The design looks somewhat weird.. Looks some bit of discontinuity here and there.
Good render though…
Someone forgot to put a rear-wiper over there.. Still got time to install it back.
make it look like BMW X6 tail design will be nice. with higher profile, will look more grand. ^_^
The back looking really awesome. Like expensive type car would have. But the front.. Ermmmmm nope. Too weird when combine it.
Just make a small, hardy, cheap wagon already.
