The BMW 5 Series Touring had been spotted previously in facelift or lifecycle impulse (LCI) guise, and now the estate version of the car has been sighted once again, this time revealing parts of its interior, including the dashboard.
In here, the overall dashboard architecture appears largely as it was before in the G30/G31 5 Series, albeit updated with Live Cockpit driver instrumentation of the latest design such as in the G20 3 Series and the G29 BMW Z4, along with the expected software updates. The centre console on this updated 5 Series appears unchanged from the existing version, doing without the gearlever design employed in the 3 Series and the Z4.
The steering wheel installed here appears to be from the Luxury line trim level, which means we can still expect to see an M Sport rendition of the G30/G31 5 Series update. As with the previous G31 5 Series Touring development car sighting, the forthcoming LCI update will apply changes to the front and rear bumpers, tailgate, tail lights and headlights, the latter seen on this unit to be using the revised DRL shapes as seen on the F90 M5 LCI development car as well.
The facelift is also expected to bring updates to the 5 Series powertrain line-up, including the 3.0 litre inline-six petrol-electric plug-in hybrid to be badged 545e, which will take the place of the existing 530e. This updated powertrain setup already features in the G11/G12 745e, though this should be mildly detuned for the equivalent 5 Series, alongside petrol and diesel engines in both four- and six-cylinder guises.
Similarly, transmission can also be expected to feature the ZF eight-speed automatic with a selection of rear- or all-wheel drive, depending on variant. Elsewhere, the G31 5 Series Touring bodyshell can be expected to remain unchanged, and thus feature similar exterior dimensions and the 1,700-litre luggage capacity with its rear seats folded down.
Still concealed on the test mules at this stage is the revised grille – will it grow any larger for the facelift? Time will tell. With the facelifted G30 5 Series sedan previously tipped for debut either late next year or early in 2021, the G31 5 Series Touring should be queued shortly behind that, which could mean an official appearance in 2021.
