Here are full galleries of the 2021 Hyundai Kona 1.6 Turbo and N Line, which were launched in Malaysia near the end of July this year. Hyundai-Sime Darby Motors (HSDM) is asking RM146,888 for the 1.6 Turbo, while the sportier N Line goes for RM156,888; these are on-the-road prices without insurance and factors in the ongoing sales tax exemption (50% as these are CBU imports).
Under the bonnet, the turbocharged variants feature Hyundai’s Smartstream G1.6 T-GDi turbocharged engine that outputs 198 PS and 265 Nm of torque. The mill is paired with a Smartsteam 7DCT seven-speed dual-clutch transmission that sends drive to the front wheels, allowing for a 0-100 km/h time of 7.7 seconds.
The Kona is also offered with a naturally-aspirated Smartstream G2.0 MPI engine on the lower 2.0 and 2.0 Active variants, which provides 149 PS and 180 Nm, mated to an Intelligent Variable Transmission (iVT) – effectively a CVT driven by a chain instead of a belt.
In terms of styling, the 1.6 Turbo is closer to the 2.0 Active by wearing SUV-style black plastic body cladding that is connected from the bumpers to the wheel arches, although the former does get an additional roof rack and two-tone body colour.
Elsewhere, it’s the same cues that came with the Kona facelift, including new lighting units, an omission of the letterbox vent, along with reworked face that now features a slimmer and wider grille with the Hyundai logo sitting on the bodywork.
The N Line gets its own distinctive look more similar to the original Kona by having the logo in the grille and bringing back the vent above it, the latter split into three. There’s also an N-style aerodynamic lip with low-lying corner fins, a rear diffuser with twin tailpipes, while the black cladding is body coloured instead. As for the interior, there’s now an electronic parking brake, a taller transmission tunnel and new air vents.
Standard kit on the 1.6 Turbo includes 18-inch alloy wheels, full-LED headlamps, LED taillights, fog lamps, a 10.25-inch Supervision digital cluster, an eight-inch touchscreen head unit with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay support, six speakers, leather seats, single-zone automatic AC, a powered driver’s seat, keyless entry and start, wireless charging, paddle shifters, engine idling stop and go system and a tyre pressure monitoring system
The N Line builds upon this with N Line-specific wheels (same size), leather and suede bucket seats, an additional powered front passenger seat, ventilated and heated front seats as well as black roof lining instead of grey.
Both turbo variants come with Hyundai’s Smartsense suite of active safety and driving assistance systems. The package includes Blind-Spot Collision Avoidance Assist (BCA) with Rear Cross-Traffic Collision-Avoidance Assist (RCCA), Lane Keeping Assist (LKA), Lane Following Assist (LFA), and Smart Cruise Control (SCC) with Stop and Go function that maintains the SCC function even when the vehicle comes to a complete stop.
Other features are Forward Collision Avoidance Assist (FCA), Driver Attention Warning (DAW) with Leading Vehicle Departure Alert (LVDA), Rear Occupant Alert (ROA), Safe Exit Warning (SEW) and High Beam Assist (HBA). These systems are also found on the 2.0 Actve, with the exception of SCC.
