All-new 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander SUV gets highest Top Safety Pick+ safety rating from IIHS in the US

Mitsubishi has announced that the petrol version of its all-new 2022 Outlander has earned the highest safety rating – Top Safety Pick+ – from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) in the US.

The TSP+ award applies to US specification vehicles built after June 2021, after which the company made an adjustment to headlight aiming. The all-new Outlander was recognised for its high level of collision safety performance and preventive safety performance in the IIHS crashworthiness evaluations, front crash prevention tests and headlight evaluation.

Introduced in North America in April, just two months after its debut, the fourth-generation Outlander offers a full range of advanced driver assistance systems. MI-PILOT Assist integrates Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) and Lane Keep Assist (LKA), and supports driving operation by maintaining following distance and keeping the vehicle near the centre of the lane.

Vehicles equipped with the navigation link system use the curve information on the map to automatically adjust the vehicle speed and reduce the burden on the driver.

Depending on trim level, the new Outlander offers other preventive safety technologies such as Forward Collision Mitigation (FCM), Predictive Forward Collision Warning (PFCW), Active Blind Spot Assist (ABSA), Lane Departure Warning (LDW) and Lane Departure Prevention (LDP). As for passive safety, MMC touts its RISE body construction and 11 airbags.

Unveiled in February, the three-row SUV is all new from the ground up, sharing its mechanicals with the latest fourth-gen Nissan X-Trail, its Alliance sibling. Although Mitsubishi uses Mivec branding, the Outlander is powered by the same PR25DD 2.5 litre direct-injected, naturally-aspirated engine found in the X-Trail, rated at 181 hp/245 Nm and mated to a CVT. Buyers can choose from 2WD or AWC.

One of the more interesting-looking midsize SUVs around, the new Outlander is priced from US$25,795 (RM106,971) for the base ES to US$34,645 (RM143,664) for the top SEL Touring Package in the US. What do you think of the new Outlander and its bold design?
