It appears that a Malaysian market debut for the Hyundai Staria could be coming soon, with the sighting of this silver example within the Sime Darby Motors City automotive hub in Ara Damansara, Selangor. Here, this can be identifed as the Premium version from its black grille and higher-specification headlamps.
The MPV offering from the Korean brand has been launched in neighbouring Thailand, where it has gone on sale with the sole powertrain option of the 177 PS/431 Nm 2.2 litre turbodiesel. Elsewhere, there is also a 3.5 litre petrol V6 engine producing 272 PS and 331 Nm of torque, and both are paired to an eight-speed automatic.
Seating in the Staria can be configured to accommodate from two persons up to 11, while the Premium version in particular gets a richer equipment list; seven-seater Premium models are outfitted with individual Premium Relaxation Seats that have a one-touch relaxation mode, where each of these seats can be reclined electrically and extend an ottoman for a spacious, plush seating.
This still offers sufficient room for an adult to be seated in the third row, says Hyundai, while nine-seater models swap the business-class-like seats for more compact items that can rotate 180 degrees to face the third row, for a more conference-like layout.
Promising greter comfort over its predecessor the Starex, the new Hyundai Staria is now built on a front wheel drive platform with the use of multi-link rear suspension, which should offer much improved ride comfort over its solid axle-equipped predecessor. Revisions to the dampers as well as brakes further augment the ability of the Staria’s chassis.
Safety kit for the Staria can include up to six airbags, while all occupants get three-point seat belts and headrests. On the active safety front, autonomous emergency braking (AEB) and blind spot monitoring with steering intervention is included.
It is still early days in terms of pricing, as a sighting does not necessarily mean it will be made available for our market; we know that Hyundai distributor Hyundai-Sime Darby Motor (HSDM) has a Genesis G80 in its active fleet. Like the Staria seen here, that G80 also wears an “80” number plate, and is likely pressed into duty for a company executive.
Should it go on sale, we can look to the Land of Smiles for comparative figures. In non-Premium, 11-seater guise, the Staria starts from 1,729,000 baht (RM222,100) for the base variant, which represented a considerable increase from the Starex/H-1 that started from 1,329,000 baht (RM170,800).
For comparison, the Grand Starex in Malaysia starts from RM165,888 for the Executive Plus, or RM2,000 more than its launch price listed last May. The higher-specification Executive Prime remains at RM173,888. For the MPV users – will the Hyundai Staria make it to your shopping list?
